Opal “Lucille” Carvitto

Bothell
Lucille Carvitto, 86, a longtime Omak resident, passed away Sunday, Dec. 21, 2008 at the Evergreen Hospital in Kirkland, Wash. She had resided in Bothell, Wash. with her daughter, Janet Crawford, for the past five years.
Mom was born in Green Castle, MO on Aug. 4, 1922 to Arlie E. and Laura E. (McDole) Baker. She grew up on the family farm and graduated from Kirksville High School at the age of 16. On Aug. 5, 1939 she married Joe Carvitto, and they, along with daughter, Joyce, moved to Omak in July of 1942. Mom worked for Biles and Coleman Lumber Company, Lew Donaldson, Kincaid’s Bakery and in the apple industry. Mom helped raise her four children and a foster son and was very involved in all their activities. She loved to read, sew, cook and grow her beautiful flowers. In her early years she attended the Omak United Methodist Church. Later on, Mom enjoyed the services and her church family at the Omak Cornerstone Christian Fellowship in Omak.
Mom was given the name “Paco” by her grandson, Jeff, and was lovingly called by her grand- and great-grandchildren. She was a wonderful mom, grandma, sister and friend. She didn’t know a stranger and went out of her way to help others. Mom and Dad raised a large garden and took pride in sharing their abundance of fruits, veggies and flowers with everyone.
Mom is survived by her sister, Wineva Martin of Omak, Wash.; her children, Joyce and her husband, Jim Black of Tacoma; Judy and her husband, Bill Smith of Omak; Jim and his wife, Joanne Carvitto of Tacoma; Janet and her husband, Gary Crawford of Bothell; Kugie and his wife, Lillian Louis of Salem, Ore.; her 11 grandchildren, Jeff and his wife, Lynn Black; Judie and her husband, Dean Beliveau; Jill and her husband, Jim Smith-Scott; Lori and her husband, Blaine Covington; Scott Smith; Justin and his wife, Melissa Carvitto; Jacob and Jared Carvitto; Bret, Ty and Zack Crawford; as well as 10 great-grandchildren, J.T. Black, Ali and Katie Beliveau, Kraeton and Khloe Scott, Austin, Shawnee, Wyatt, Morgan and Charissa Covington.
She was preceded in death by our dad on Jan. 1, 1997; her parents and brother-in-law, Herman Martin.
Soar high, Mom! We love you and will always miss you! Our love, Janet, Judy, Jim and Joyce.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Children’s Hospital in Seattle, Cornerstone Christian Fellowship in Omak, or a charity of your choice.
Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, Dec. 31, 2008 at 10 a.m. at the Precht-Harrison-Nearents Chapel on Elmway.
Precht-Harrison-Nearents Chapel was entrusted with the arrangements.

John Carlson "Pappy" McKinney

John Carlson "Pappy" McKinney died peacefully at home on August 18, 2009.
He was born April 6, 1936 in Dermott, Ark. to Lily M. Carlson (McKinney) and Harry C. McKinney. He grew up a "Navy Brat" and traveled the world. His fondest childhood memories were living on the island of Truk in the South Pacific.
He joined the Marines for a few years when he was 17. He could make anyone laugh. He had a magnificent personality that just made people want to be near him. He was an artist and could make anything. He was an awesome person. Pappy was an avid motorcyclist, loving to ride his Harley on long runs with his brothers. He was a proud member of the Bandidos Motorcycle Club, the Eagles and the Moose Lodge.
He is survived by four daughters, Bobby Jo, Judy, Joleen and Eva; four sons, Jimmy, Cole, Clell and Tracy; 11 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; his caregiver, Colay; and all his Bandido Brothers.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Harry; and son, Ronny.
He will be greatly missed by all who knew him. A memorial to celebrate his life will be held at a later date.

Delores Daniels Burnett Allen Vasquez Lovato
1934-2009
Okanogan
Delores Lovato-Burnett, 75, a resident of Okanogan, Wash., passed away Thursday, August 20, 2009 at Valley Care Center. Delores was born on August 2, 1934 in Fairbank, Iowa to Philip and Mamie Daniels. Her family eventually moved to Okanogan where she attended Okanogan High School.
Delores loved her family, friends and her two special dogs, Charlee and Angel.
Delores is survived by her husband of the home, Neil Burnett of Okanogan; her children, Ron Burnett of Seattle, Wash., David Allen of San Jose, Calif., Susan Vasquez of San Jose, Calif., Jody Lynn Vasquez of Tracy, Calif.; her brother, David Daniels of Wilbur, Wash.; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents;, former husbands, Joe Vasquez and Tony Lovato; her infant babies, Roben Burnett and Veronica; and her first born, Pamela Jean Burnett Allwardt.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, August, 26 at the Wilbur City Cemetery.
Legacy Memorial Funeral Home has been entrusted with care.

Deanne Haworth Lindsey
Okanogan
Deanne Haworth Lindsey, 72, of Okanogan, Wash. passed away August 20, 2009. She was born in Searcy, Ark. in 1937.
Deanne was the Queen of Chelan in 1955. She raised seven children, had lots of grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. She was a caring and loved person.
Deanne loved listening to country music, dancing and playing bingo. She also loved playing poker with her sisters and family. Deanne also loved going with her husband, Gene Haworth, of "Rhythm Drifters" when he played music. She is going to be missed.
Survivors include her daughter, Julie Davis; six sons, Russ, Victor, Perry and Mark Wickenhagen, Gene and Rick Haworth; two sisters, Brenda Baker and Vesta Austin; her brother, Lynn Lindsey; numerous grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
At the families request, no services are planned at this time.
Precht-Harrison-Nearents Chapel and Okanogan County Crematory entrusted with arrangements.

Shirlee Adrienne Stone
Spokane
Shirlee Adrienne Stone was born on July 26, 1941 to Bud Spence and Sadie Moomaw in Tonasket, Wash. On January 26, 1962 Shirlee married LaVerne "Swede" Stone and remained married for 43 years. These years were filled with creating special memories, including traveling around the U.S. in a 1952 bus for family vacations. One of Shirlee's favorite destinations was Ilwaco, Wash. to salmon fish of the jetty and pier at the lighthouses. Besides being a wonderful wife and loving mother, Shirlee also had an important role of hairdresser/caretaker in the lives of many clients as she operated Shirlee's Beauty Shop for many years.
She was preceded in death by two sons, Richard and Dean. She has left behind a son, Kevin Stone and a daughter, Sadeen McAllister, as well as their spouses; four granddaughters; and one great-grandson. Shirlee will be greatly missed by her family as she was very devoted to them. A large circle of friends also encompassed Shirlee as she was always focused on making sure everyone was happy, usually using her excellent cooking/baking abilities as her tool of choice.
There are not enough words to express what a loving and giving person Shirlee was! The kind actions of her giving heart will forever resonate within those who knew her.

Bertha VanDerscheldon Cook Moore
March 11, 1912 - August 15, 2009
Bertha VanDerscheldon was born March 11, 1912, in a log cabin in Upper Pine Creek to pioneer parents, Joseph and Louise Karg VanDerscheldon, the sixth of eight children. She spent her childhood working on the farm and attended the "Beeman School" through the 8th grade. The bell that called Bertha to school, now hangs atop the Tonasket Elementary School.
In 1930 Bertha married Millard Vern Cook. They lived on the Cook Homestead in North Pine Creek, where they raised their five children. They made their living by milking cows, separating the cream to sell for their cash money, and fattening hogs on the skim milk. Selling a butchered hog, or veal, eggs, honey and farm produce was their livelihood. They filled the cellar with potatoes, carrots, cabbage, apples and jars and jars of canned fruits, vegetables, venison and chicken. Bertha was an excellent cook and kept her family well fed.
Bertha began working at the Tonasket School in about 1948. She rode the school bus to and from work. She worked in the kitchen where she became head cook and held that job for many years. In 1956 Bertha and Vern left the homestead and moved to "town".
Bertha had an inquisitive mind and a deep quest for learning. She was inventive, ingenious, intuitive and a very unique person. In addition to being a major source of information for the compilation of the book The Pine Creek Pilgrimage, Bertha also penned a book of poetry, two family history books (Cook and VanDerscheldon), and numerous poems that were printed in the Wenatchee World.
Bertha was widowed in 1977. In 1992, at the age of 80 she married Earl Moore of Omak, Wash. She was again widowed in 2002 and returned to Tonasket.
Bertha was preceded in death by her husbands, a grandson, a granddaughter, and two great-grandchildren.
Survivors are her children, Donna (and Will) Schreckengast of Okanogan, Louise Weller of Auburn, Esther Caton of Tonasket; Frank (and Dianne) Cook of Wenatchee; and Dr. R. Edward Cook of Vancouver. Bertha is also survived by a sister, Ella Halverson of Kelso, Wash.; fifteen grandchildren and many great grandchildren.
A memorial will be held August 29, 2009 at 1:30 p.m. at the Tonasket Senior Center. Memorials are suggested to the Tonasket Community Scholarship Fund, at U.S. Bank Tonasket, or the charity of one's choice.

Robert J. Alexander
OMAK - Robert J. Alexander, 88, a 15-year resident of Omak, died Aug. 15.
He had done stucco work throughout the Okanogan Valley, worked for the Okanogan County road department and owned a ranch.
Survivors include two sons, Gary Alexander of Reno, Nev., and Robert Alexander of Omak; a brother, Eugene Alexander of Mansfield, and a sister, Jenieve Wheeler of Brewster.
A private family memorial was held.
Legacy Memorial Funeral Home, Omak, was in charge of arrangements.

Rosalie Ann Eddy
Anchorage, Alaska
Anchorage resident Rosalie Ann Maley Eddy, 70, died July 24, 2009, at her home.
Services were held at the Evergreen Memorial Chapel, 737 E. St., Anchorage, Alaska at 2 p.m. A second memorial service for Rosalie will be held at a later date in her hometown of Omak, Wash.
Rosalie was born in Okanogan, Wash., on Oct. 4, 1938. She was the daughter of Paul and Annie Lou Maley.
Rosalie grew up in Omak. She enjoyed horses and riding with the Boots and Saddle Club in her high school years. She graduated from Omak High School with the class of 1956, and attended and graduated from Central Washington College in Ellensburg. She took her fifth year at the University of Washington. She taught school in Bremerton, Wash., and Anchorage. She retired after owning the 515 Club.
Rosalie loved the outdoors and was an avid angler, spending her summers fishing on the Kenai River. She also put her sewing skills to use making beautiful wall hangings and selling them locally.
She is survived by her daughter, Dawn Eddy; her two grandchildren, Dylan and Heather; her mother, Annie Lou Maley; and her two brothers, Michael and John. She will be missed by many friends in both Anchorage and Omak.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Breast Cancer Association in her name.

Gillie A. Jacobs
Roslyn, Wash.
Gillie A. Jacobs, long-time resident of Roslyn, Wash., passed away at the age of 80 on July 26, 2009. Gil was born on June 21, 1929 to Gillie A. and Etta (Townsend) Jacobs in Omak, Wash.
He graduated from Okanogan High School in 1947 and excelled in all high sports, including football, basketball, baseball and track.
Gil retired as a locomotive engineer from the Milwaukee and Burlington Northern Railroads, where he was employed from 1948 to 1992. He always said, "working for the railroad was the best job a guy could ever have."
Gil's favorite pastimes were riding his Harley and telling jokes. He will be greatly missed by all those who knew him.
Gil is survived by his wife, Jovana (Golubic) Jacobs; daughter and son-in-law, Ronda and Steve Lovejoy; granddaughters, Windy Lovejoy and Miciah Jacobs; sisters, Mary Lees and Hazel Rios of Okanogan, Wash. and Dorothy Smith of Onamia, Minn.
At Gil's request, there were no services.

Estel Lenora McKay Taylor
Wenatchee
Estel Lenora McKay Taylor, age 88 of Wenatchee, Wash., beloved teacher, passed away peacefully at home, holding her husband's hand, on August 4, 2009. She was born on May 3, 1921, in Prairie Dog Township, Kans. Her parents were Vera and Clyde McKay. She attended the same one room schoolhouse that her father and his siblings attended.
Estel, the oldest of four children moved with her family to Okanogan, Wash., where she graduated from Okanogan High School in 1940. Estel attended Whitworth College from 1941 to 1942. She graduated from EWSC Cheney in 1944 with a provisional teaching degree. She taught second grade in Omak for two years, September 1944 through May 1946. Estel married James Donald Taylor in November of 1945 after he returned from the Pacific theater of World War II. From the fall of 1946 through the spring of 1949 Estel taught second grade in Pullman, Wash., while her husband finished his BS degree in horticulture.
Estel and Jim moved to the Wenatchee area in the fall of 1949 and she taught at the Monitor grade school. After having two children, she returned to teaching, first at Eastmont and then fifth grade at Washington Elementary School. She retired from teaching after thirty years.
Estel was a member of DAR, Topaz Club, Delta Kappa Gamma, and Washington State Retired Teachers. Estel was the first woman to join the Wenatchee District Kiwanis Clubs and was a member of the Wenatchee club with perfect attendance for 21 years. She received the George F. Hixson award for distinguished service.
Estel followed the Lord in believer's baptism at the age of fourteen in the North Fork of Prairie Dog Creek in Kansas. She loved the Lord and He used her to teach many hundreds of students. She will be greatly missed by everyone that knew her. She was a member of the Wenatchee Brethren Baptist Church.
Estel is survived by her husband of sixty-three years, Jim Taylor; one daughter, Camille Leidigh of Yaak, Mont.; one son, Ted of Wenatchee; two sisters, Billie Rappe of Lacey, Wash. and Nancy Lou Gilbaugh of East Wenatchee; five grandchildren, Aven Leidigh and Cedar Leidigh of Anchorage, Alaska, Azure Leidigh McCormick of Olympia, Wash., Cassia Leidigh of Greenville, S.C.; and Cherith Leidigh of Yaak, Mont.; and one great-grandson, Elliott.
Estel was preceded in death by her parents, Clyde and Vera McKay; and one brother, Connie McKay, who was killed in Korea.
The family would like to thank Dr. Eichler for his compassionate care and the Knights of Columbus.
Memorials are suggested to the Wenatchee Kiwanis Foundation and the Wenatchee Brethren Baptist Church.
Internment took place on Friday, August 7 at the Wenatchee Cemetary with Pastor Jon Brahn officiating. A public memorial service will be held on August 12 at 2 p.m. at the Wenatchee Brethren Baptist Church on the corner of Okanogan and Peachy Streets with Sam Detwiler.

Marlene "Lynn" Truitt
Spokane
Marlene "Lynn" Truitt, age 60, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 4, 2009 in Spokane, Wash. She was born on Nov. 1, 1949, in Omak, to her parents, Marlo and Arlene Truitt. She grew up here in Omak surrounded by her loving family and friends.
Lynn suffered from cerebral palsy and was wheelchair-bound for much of her youth. However, with her sharp mind, help from her mother, and a physical therapist, she was eventually able to walk.
Around the age of 20, she moved to Spokane to go to a specialized school. She enjoyed her family and was very thankful for the time she was able to spend with them. Lynn had one of the best days of her life in the last month when her sister took her on a shopping spree and bought her literally everything she wanted.
Marlene "Lynn" Truitt is survived by her companion of 40 years, Mark Overland of Spokane; her mother and step-father, Arlene and Jim Christie of Omak; and sister, Marla and Birens Pillow of Okanogan.
She was preceded in death by her father, Marlo Truitt.

Alexa Brown

CLYDE, Ohio - Alexa Katherine Brown, 11, Clyde, Ohio, died Aug. 6 of medulloblastoma cancer.
She was born Feb. 21, 1998, in Fremont, to Warren and Wendy (Sarvis) Brown. She was about to enter the sixth grade at Green Springs Elementary School.
Survivors include her parents, Warren and Wendy; two sisters, Abby and Amanda; a brother, Ethan; an aunt, Heidi Sarvis-Sapp (David) of Berlin Heights; four uncles, Randall Sarvis of Wilmington, Frank Brown (Kelly) of Marion, Ind., Raymond Brown (Cheryl) of Port Republic, N.J., and Robert Brown (Marta) of Tonasket; and cousins Stephanie, Michelle, Andrew, Emily, A.J., Ray and Samantha.
She was preceded in death by paternal grandparents, Frank and Sylvia Brown; and maternal grandparents, Wilbur and Thelma Sarvis.
A celebration of life will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, at the First United Methodist Church of Clyde, 510 Maple St.
Memorials are suggested to Clyde First United Methodist Church for distribution to CureSearch, Back To The Wild, Fremont Memorial Hospice, St. Paul United Church of Christ, Clyde First United Methodist Church and several small non-profit groups that send cards and small gifts to critically ill children.

Raymond Descoteaux

OMAK - Raymond Albert Descoteaux, 27, was killed in a vehicle accident Saturday, Aug. 8.
Mr. Descoteaux was born April 23, 1982, to Gail Jameson and Joe Descoteaux.
He was a drummer with Hu-Qua.
He enjoyed going to rodeos and was an iron worker who helped build the new Stampede Arena.
Survivors include his mother and father, grandmothers Faustina Clark and Elizabeth Descoteaux, and sisters, brothers, nephews, nieces, uncles, aunts, cousins and friends.
He was preceded in death by his grandfathers, Raymond Cecil Jameson and Albert Raymond Descoteaux, his great grandfathers and great grandmothers, his brother, Jeremey "Dokey" Ives, and sister, Rose Gallagher.
A rosary was Aug. 10 at the Omak Longhouse and services were Aug. 11 at longhouse, with burial in Ellisforde.

Woodrow "Woody" Ball

Tucson, Ariz.
Woodrow "Woody" Ball passed away July 17, 2009 in Tucson Ariz. He was born in Newfoundland, Canada, raised a family in Tucson, and joined the Tonasket community when he married long-time Tonasket resident Ruth Corum Pruitt Ball in 1989. They divided their time between Tonasket and Tucson and traveled widely in the U.S. and Canada until her death in 2005. He took an active part in the Tonasket community, attending the Tonasket United Church of Christ, Kiwanis, contributed many hours to Habitat for Humanity projects, and his yellow Ford Model T Roadster appeared in many area parades. He had many friends in the Tonasket area who are saddened by his passing.
Woody Ball was interred in Tucson on August 3, 2009. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at the Rincon United Church of Christ in Tucson on September 18, 2009. His family suggests that memorial donations go to the North Okanogan Habitat for Humanity, P.O.Box 1679, Tonasket, WA 98855-1679.

Richard Moomaw

Omak
Richard James Moomaw, 79, Omak, died Aug. 9, 2009, at his home. He was born July 17, 1930, to Leo S. Moomaw and Mary (Picard) Moomaw near Monse, Wash.
He attended Chicken Creek and Omak schools until leaving to work on the family ranch and rodeo stock business.
He served in the Army in Korea from 1951 to 1953. He married Elaine Garvais, his loving wife of 54 years, on June 10, 1955. As they raised their four children in Omak, Rich worked in ranching, logging, and at Columbia Concrete and Pipe Co. Then he worked for the Washington State Department of Transportation where he retired in 1992 after 21 years.
Rich and Elaine were both musicians and played old-time country music in dance bands, and for enjoyment at their church during life's difficult times or celebrations. Rich served his church community as an acolyte for 16 years. We will miss Rich's guitar picking and remember the way kids just loved him. We did too.
He is survived by his wife, Elaine, at the home; sons, Alan Moomaw of Olympia, Jay (Kim) Moomaw of Omak, and Tom (Joyce) Moomaw of Asburn, Virg.; daughter, Julie Muraoka and husband, Ed Barlongo, of Kaneohe, Hawaii; stepmother, Marge (Bonwell) Moomaw of Omak; brothers, Wade (Aggie) Moomaw of Omak, Ted (Joanne) Moomaw of Blair, Texas; sisters, Edie (Vern) Stevens, Marie (Bob) Fry, and Peg (Bob) Nelson, all of Omak; grandchildren, Brian (April) Ray of East Moriches, New York, Labrie Gunn, Deneige Gunn, and Leo J. Moomaw all of Omak; Richard C. Moomaw of Olympia, and Jalen Muraoka of Kaneohe, Hawaii; and great-grandson, Tyler Ray of East Moriches, New York.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Sadie and Ida; and brothers, Ed and Duane.
A memorial service was held on Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2009 at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Mission Catholic Church officiated by Fr. Jake Morton. A dinner followed at the Colville Tribal Longhouse. A private family internment will be held at a later date.
Precht-Harrison-Nearents Chapel and the Okanogan County Crematory have been entrusted with the arrangements.

Patsy M. Alexander

GRAND COULEE - Patsy M. Alexander, 71, Grand Coulee, died Aug. 9 in Grand Coulee.
She had worked for Mountain Products for 10 years and at Wenatchee Tree Top for 15 years.
Survivors include her husband, Joseph Howell of Grand Coulee, and three daughters, Valerie Alexander of Tucson, Ariz., Niki Alexander of East Wenatchee and Meleney Alexander of Los Angeles. Calif.
Private family services are planned.
Arrangements were by Legacy Memorial Funeral Home, Omak.

Gillie A. Jacobs

ROSLYN - Gillie A. Jacobs, a longtime resident of Roslyn, died July 26. He was 80.
He was born June 21, 1929, to Gillie and Etta (Townsend) Jacobs in Omak.
He worked for the Milwaukee Railroad, starting in 1948 as an engineer, and for Burlington Northern. He retired in 1993.
He is survived by his wife, Jovana (Golubic) Jacobs; a daughter and son-in-law, Steve and Ronda Lovejoy, and two granddaughters, Windy Lovejoy and Miciah Jacobs.
He requested no services be held.
