Virgie Hazel Bracy of Blaine passed away on Friday, May 11, 2007. She was 96 years old.
A funeral service is being held on Wednesday, May 16, at 1 p.m. at Sunrise Baptist Church, 2480 W. Badger Rd., Custer.
Arrangements are with Moles Family Funeral Home & Cremation - Lynden.

Jack C. Hawk

Jack C. Hawk, age 64, of Ferndale passed away on Tuesday, May 1, 2007 at home with his family surrounding him after a battle with cancer. Through it all he had an incredible peace that came from his deep faith in Jesus Christ.
Jack was born on July 15, 1942 in Omaha, Neb., to Roy and Virginia (Knudtson) Hawk. He graduated from the University of Nebraska (Jack was a true Nebraska football fan) and served four years in the U.S. Navy. During this time he met and married his wife on Oct. 20, 1967. They shared 39 years of marriage and had two children.

Marinus Oostra

Marinus Oostra, age 86, went to be with his Lord on Tuesday, May 1, 2007 at his home in Lynden.
He was born on April 5, 1921 to John and Kate (VanSurksum) Oostra in Doon, Iowa. He grew up there and was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1943. He transferred to the Army Air Corps where he served at a P-51 fighter base. Marinus was awarded the E.T.O. ribbon with six battle stars, a Presidential Unit Citation and good conduct medal.

Lloyd Alvin Bernardy

Lloyd Alvin Bernardy, a lifetime resident of Whatcom County, died peacefully at home on April 30, 2007 while surrounded by his family's love and support.
Lloyd was born in Bellingham on Jan. 14, 1927, the third child of Otto and Emma (Olson) Bernardy. Lloyd left home at age 15, worked in a garage in Bremerton, then joined the Merchant Marines in 1944, becoming a Junior Third Officer. He met his future wife (Elois Van Zwol) at Meridian Grade School; they married in 1947. Lloyd spent some years traveling from Eastern Washington to Alaska as a pipe fitter before going to work at Intalco. He retired as a maintenance foreman after 25 years.

Henry ‘Hank’ Eshuis

Lynden resident Henry ‘Hank’ Eshuis, age 77, was welcomed home by his Heavenly Father on Thursday, Dec. 13, 2007, following a courageous 20-year battle with ALS (Lou Gehrig’s Disease).
Born in Sioux Center, Iowa, on March 29, 1930, he moved with his family to Whatcom County in 1943. He married Betty Kortlever on his birthday in 1950.

Minta Emma (Williamson) Sundean

Minta Emma (Williamson) Sundean, age 96, of Lynden, died peacefully at the Christian Health Care Center on Sunday, Dec. 16, 2007, of congestive heart failure after a long, active and independent life. She will be greatly missed by her family and many friends.

Trenton Van Diest

Trenton Van Diest, age 78, of Bellingham, was taken to be with his Heavenly Father at his home on Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2007.
Born in Lynden on Nov. 2, 1929, he was a son of Rendit and Nellie (Kortlever) Van Diest. He attended Ebenezer Christian School and from 1951 to 1953 served in the U.S. Army. On May 4, 1956, he married Grace Van Der Stoep in Lynden and for more than 30 years worked at the Whatcom Farmers Co-Op Store in Bellingham.

Marjorie Clark

  Lynden resident Marjorie E. Clark, age 87, died at the Christian Health Care Center on Sunday, Dec. 16, 2007.
Marjorie was a daughter of Howard and Verna (Boggs) Worthen and was born in Lynden on Dec. 20, 1919. She worked as a barber at the U.S. Marine Corps Camp Pendleton for 36 years and married LtC. William ‘Bill’ Clark, USMC retired, on July 11, 1975. In 1980, they moved to Lynden from Oceanside, Calif. Marjorie enjoyed reading, playing card games, doing crossword puzzles and traveling to Hawaii.

F. Nathan Barron

Lynden resident F. Nathan Barron, age 23, was taken to be with his Heavenly Father at St. Joseph Hospital on his birthday, Monday, Dec. 3, following a sudden brain hemorrhage.
A son of James and Jacqueline (Atkinson) Barron Jr., Nate was born in North Vancouver, B.C., in 1984. In 1994, he moved with his family to Lynden and graduated from Lynden High School in 2002. Following high school, he worked for his father at Barron Painting of Lynden. He married Tana Nieuwsma in Lynden on Feb. 3, 2006, and for the past two years operated Barron-Thompson Painting.

Joyce G. deJong

Joyce G. deJong, age 81, of Lynden, went to be with her Heavenly Father on Monday, Dec. 10, at the Christian Health Care Center.
Joyce was a daughter of Gerben and Altje Westra and was born in Enschede, the Netherlands, on Feb. 11, 1926. She married James deJong on Feb. 18, 1948 and in 1955 they moved with their family to Oak Harbor. From Oak Harbor they moved to Mount Vernon and then to Lynden in 1979.

Henrietta Heida

Henrietta Heida passed away at the Christian Health Care Center in Lynden on Monday, Dec. 3, 2007, at the age of 94.
She was born on July 18, 1913, in Oosterzee, Netherlands, to Koop and Grietje (De Weerd) Bangma. She was the oldest of 11 children.

Evertt Van Loo

  Evertt Van Loo, 87, born on April 19, 1920, passed away on Dec. 5, 2007.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy (Haveman); children Duane (Valora), Jack (Jeanette), Roy (Nanci), Jane (Lenny) Mais; 10 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; brother John; and sisters Gerdena Douma and Catherine (Peter) Bovenkamp.
Memorials may be made to Wycliffe Summer Institute of Linguistics, 16131 N. Vernon Dr., Tucson, AZ 85739.

Dwight Herschel Wiley

Everson resident Dwight Herschel Wiley, age 87, died at his home Saturday, Dec. 1, 2007.
He was born in Nodaway County, Mo., on Dec. 26, 1919, to Dale and Ethel (McClurg) Wiley where he spent his childhood and graduated from College High School in Maryville, Mo. A Whatcom County resident for nearly 70 years, he moved with his family following high school to settle in the Deming area.

Carol Ann Smith

Lynden resident Carol Ann Smith, age 58, was taken home to her Heavenly Father in Rancho Mirage, Calif., on Sunday, Nov. 25. Her family feels peace in knowing that Carol’s physical limitations are no longer holding her back.
Born in Bellingham on Jan. 4, 1949, Carol was a daughter of Clarence and Roberta ‘Bert’ Gustafson. A lifetime Lynden resident, she graduated from Lynden High School in 1967 and married her high school sweetheart James Smith on Aug. 11 of that year. Following her mother’s retirement, she became owner and manager of Bert’s Beauty Nook in Lynden. A homemaker, Carol was a loving and dedicated wife, mother and grandmother. Her family was the center of her life, and she took such pride in carrying on family traditions. Carol was a member of the Lynden United Methodist Church where at one time was active in the youth club and Sunday school programs. Carol loved blessing her loved ones with her gift of cooking. As a gourmet cook, Carol was known for adding a spark to every meal. She was also known for her award-winning sweet pickles and found such joy in giving them away as gifts to her family and friends. Carol also loved gardening, horseback riding and boating with her family. Her most recent passion was her involvement in the Relay for Life event in Lynden. She organized a team and called it “Gussy’s Bunch.” She was so proud to walk as a cancer survivor.

Rose Trefethen

  Rose Alice Manna Trefethen went to be with her Lord and Savior at her Everson area home on Thursday, Feb. 14, 2008, at the age of 82.
She was born to Dominic and Antoinette Demelio Manna on Oct. 1, 1925, in Youngstown, Ohio.
She was the loving, devoted wife and best friend to her husband, Wayne W. Trefethen Sr., of Everson. They were married for a blessed 65 years.
Rose was also an incredible, wonderful mother of five children. They are daughter Irene Gatzke and son-in-law Andre Gatzke of Jacksonville, Fla.; daughter Romona Wilcox and deceased son-in-law David Wilcox of Port Angeles; daughter Ruthann (Ann) Bruce and son-in-law William Bruce of Woodinville; son Wayne W. Trefethen Jr. of Lynden; and son Joseph C. Trefethen of Maple Valley.

Lawrence Verbrugge

  Lawrence Servaas Verbrugge, of Lynden, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2008, at 83 years of age.
Lawrence was born May 2, 1924, in Downs, Kan., and married Ruth Kiel on October 12, 1951. After farming with his dad in Downs, the couple moved to Blaine in August 1955, where they purchased a dairy farm. For many years, Lawrence worked as a tractor mechanic, foreman and part owner of Cascade Equipment, then as a co-owner of Lynden Tractor, from which he retired.

Thomas Tabor Sr.
Announced on February 19, 2008 - 5:53pm.

  Thomas S. Tabor Sr. went to be with his Savior peacefully early Friday morning, Feb. 8, 2008, after a 14-month battle with cancer. Tom was 72.
Tom spent 32 years in insurance and business consulting. A great story teller, he was a man of deep faith and humility, who loved people and enjoyed all things outdoors, especially sailing. In retirement, his passion was for missions, chairing the missions committee at his church for the last five years.

William O'Neil

  William J. O’Neil was born Aug. 23, 1921, in Lynden, on the property that was homesteaded by his grandparents, Edward and Mary Jane O’Neil. He was a son of Everett Price and Etta O’Neil Price.
William is survived by his wife of 65 years, Luannis (Taylor) O’Neil; two daughters Meredith and husband William Shuler and Erin and husband Donald Moe; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; half-sister Geri Stowell; half-brothers Wesley and Gilbert Price; several cousins; and special friend Barney Goltz.

Robert Anderson

  Robert James Anderson, of Bellingham, passed away on Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2008. He was 88 years old.
Arrangements are pending with Moles Family Funeral Homes & Crematory, Lynden.

Lawrence Andrew Benner

Lawrence Andrew Benner, age 80, went home to be with the Lord on Friday, Feb. 8, 2008, in Lynden.
A son of Alton and Ruth (Thiel) Benner, he was born in San Francisco on May 6, 1927, and around the age of 12 moved with his family to Bellingham. A 1945 Nooksack Valley High School graduate, he enlisted and served his country that same year in the U.S. Navy, near the end of World War II.

Laura R. Stuurmans

Laura R. Stuurmans, age 87, of Lynden, was taken to be with her Heavenly Father at St. Joseph Hospital on Thursday, Feb. 7, 2008.
Born in Columbus, Mont., on April 5, 1920, she was a daughter of Otis and Sadie (Portinga) Hoekema. She grew up in Montana and graduated from Manhattan High School and then received her teaching certificate from Montana State Normal School in Dillon.

William “Bill” Nelson

William “Bill” Nelson passed away in Lynden on Thursday, Feb. 7, 2008.
He was 96 years old, born April 26, 1911, in Custer to John and Anna (Dryer) Nelson.
Bill is survived by his wife of 70 years, Sylvia; several nieces and nephews; and special friends, Ron and Donna Weid-kamp.

Lynda Kilborn

  Lynda Carol (Klahn) Kilborn, of Bellingham, passed away on Saturday, Feb. 9, 2008.
She was 63 years old, and will be greatly missed by her family. A private family gathering will be held at a future time.

  Rose E. Reed, of Lynden, passed away on Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2008, at age 79. A memorial service was held on Monday, Feb. 11, 2008.

Leo De Hoog

Leo De Hoog, age 59, of Everson, went home to his Heavenly Father on Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2008.
Born on April 24, 1948, in Artesia, Calif., to Gilles and Anna (VandenBerg) De Hoog, he moved to Washington with his family in 1954. Leo attended special education classes in both the Bellingham and Lynden Christian schools. He lived with his family until April 2006, then he moved to the Christian Health Care Center in Lynden where he was cared for with love and compassion.

Howard Strickland

Howard Strickland, a lifetime Ferndale resident, passed away on Saturday, March 1, 2008.
Howard was born on Nov. 29, 1935, to Ferndale dairy farmers Ira and Lottie Strickland. He married his high school sweetheart Kathleen Kleid in 1953. They purchased the dairy farm adjoining his parents’ farm on the Ritter Road, where they raised their family and lived until retirement.
