  Sumas resident Sanford F. Haviland Jr., age 78, died Friday, April 11, 2008, at Lynden’s Christian Health Care Center.
Memorial services may be scheduled at a later date.
Arrangements are entrusted to Gillies Funeral Home and Cremation Services of Lynden.

Grace Vander Kooi
Announced on April 16, 2008 - 8:51am.

  Grace Vander Kooi, age 92, died Tuesday, April 15, 2008, at Christian Health Care Center.
Memorial services are planned for Friday, April 18, at Gillies Funeral Home chapel. Please contact Gillies Funeral Home at 354-4428 for service time.

Malcolm “Duncan” MacLeod

Malcolm “Duncan” MacLeod, age 83, passed away on April 4, 2008, at the Christian Health Care Center in Lynden.
He was born on Dec. 24, 1924, on Lopez Island to Malcolm and Mary (Higgins) Mac-Leod. A World War II veteran, Duncan served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946. After being discharged from the army, he attended Edison Technical School in Seattle and later opened up his own radio, TV and appliance shop. Duncan married Beverly in 1951 and they moved to Bellingham in 1954. In Bellingham, he worked at Mulhern’s Appliance Store, then Columbia Valley Lumber Company. Over the 10 years he worked there, his family grew to include five children, with two more to come.

Burton LeRoy Horman

Burton LeRoy Horman, age 81, of Lynden, passed away at his home on March 30, 2008.
Burt was born on Feb. 8, 1927, in Bellingham to George and Ruby (Peters) Horman. He enlisted in the Army Air Corps in 1944, following in the footsteps of his beloved eldest brother John, who was killed in action in 1944. He graduated from Western Washington College in 1952.

Howard (Bud) Schenk

Howard (Bud) Schenk passed away on March 27, 2008, in Port Townsend after a long illness.
Born in Bellingham on May 4, 1923, to George and Ethelyn (Vander Yacht) Schenk, he was one of six children. Bud grew up in Lynden. At the age of 15 Bud went to work hauling milk for Elenbaas Dairy, then Darigold and later Milky Way. He was a member of the Teamsters Union. By the time he retired in 1985, Bud had progressed from hauling an average of 10,000 pounds of milk a day in cans on the back of a truck, to 240,000 pounds of milk a day utilizing a modern tanker truck and trailer. Bud never experienced an accident or received a traffic citation. He drove his route for 47 years, taking three years off to drive truck during World War II, where he served in Europe.

Alfred Allred

  Alfred Harold Allred passed away on March 29, 2008, in Ferndale.
Alfred was born on April 28, 1939, in Checotah, Okla., to Otto and Bessie. From 1949 to 1968 the family resided in Tehachapi, Calif., where he married Barbara Jean Huskey. He and his family moved to Ferndale, where he was employed by and retired from Intalco.

Corstian Klein

Corstian Klein, the son of Meindert “Mike” and Jacoba (deWaard) Klein, went to be with his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, on April 28, 2008, at the age of 82.
Born on Jan. 28, 1926, in Armour, S.D., he had very fond and vivid memories of his childhood growing up in South Dakota, which spanned the Great Depression and the “dust bowl.” His mother died when he was 9 years old. After the Depression, Corstian’s father moved the family to Everson.

Andy Koster

Andy Koster, beloved husband, father and grandfather, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ at the age of 61 on Tuesday, April 29, 2008, at his home in Green Valley, Ariz.
Andy is survived by his wife of 40 years, Joyce; daughter Heidi (Myke) Fay of Canyon Country, Calif.; son Marc (Jennifer) Koster of Simi Valley, Calif.; daughter Krista (Danny) Lee of Simi Valley, Calif.; five grandchildren: Morgan, Cory, Madison and Molli Fay and Jack Lee; his mother, Jennie Koster of Lynden; brother John (Marlaine) Koster; sister Vicki Chambers; aunts Grace Gelderloos and Clara Koster; father- and mother-in-law Carmi and Jeannine King; sisters-in-law Linda (Mike) Vail and Carmielle (Keith) Cox; and 10 nieces and nephews.

Catharina Nydam

Surrounded by her family, Catharina Nydam, age 86, of Lynden, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Thursday, May 1, 2008 at St. Joseph Hospital.
She was born on May 22, 1921, to Ulbe and Gerritje (Hiemstra) DeJong in Gaastmeer, Friesland, the Netherlands. Catharina grew up in Holland and was married to Frank Nydam on Aug. 2, 1941, in Ougdea, Friesland. In 1948, Catharina and Frank immigrated to Artesia, Calif., where they raised their family. They were members of Artesia Reformed Church and shared the church janitorial responsibilities of New Life Community Church.

Helen Dykman

Lynden resident Helen Dykman, age 82, went to be with her Lord and Savior on Friday, May 2, 2008.
Born on May 5, 1925, in Chicago to John and Minnie (VanDerKamp) Batjes, she was married to Fred Dykman in Cicero, Ill., on May 28, 1947. They came to Lynden and together operated a dairy farm on the Guide Meridian Road. A lifetime member of the Christian Reformed Church, Helen belonged to the Third Christian Reformed Church in Lynden where she was actively involved with the Sharon Bible Study. Volunteering in service to others brought her much enjoyment, especially at The Hope Office and The Hope Chest in Lynden, as well as the Red Cross, Wycliffe Bible Translators and Ebenezer Christian School. Helen delighted in attending her grandchildren’s activities -- with a special interest in their sporting events.

Oreen E. Hillmer

Oreen E. Hillmer, of Bellingham, passed away on Friday, May 2, 2008. She was 94.
Oreen was born in Edmonton, Alberta, on July 20, 1913, to Mary (Dyer) and William Englehartson. Oreen graduated from Orcas Island High School and nursing school in Bellingham. She worked at St. Luke’s Hospital and St. Francis Nursing Home. Oreen married Walter Hillmer on Dec. 2, 1933, on Orcas Island, where they lived until 1946 when they moved to Bellingham.

Dick Ten Kley

  Dick Jacob Ten Kley passed away on Saturday, May 3, 2008.
Dick was born in Perkins, Iowa, on May 25, 1915, to Gerrit and Cora (VanHofwegen) Ten Kley. He was married to Wilhelmina (Minnie) Veenhof on Feb. 24, 1939. They lived in Minnesota and Michigan before moving to Washington state in 1946.
Dick is survived by his wife of 69 years; children Mary Ann (Lloyd) DeVries, Judy Howell, Ellen (Jerry) Matter, Gerald (Divina), Bonnie (Larry) Miller, Linda (Jack) Wiebusch and Don (Joan); 15 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; brothers Gerrit, Marvin and Clarence; and sister Carol VanMersbergen.

Herman Lows
Announced on May 7, 2008 - 3:35pm.

  Herman Lows of Tigard, Ore., died on Sunday, April 13, 2008. Cause of death was Parkinson’s Disease. He was a resident of the Portland area for 35 years and was 83.
Mr. Lows was born on Feb. 15, 1925, in Lynden. During World War II, he served in the Navy. In 1947, he married Marian Bierlink.
Survivors, in addition to his wife Marian, are daughters Kathleen Lows Comer and Margery Lows; sons Douglas and Michael; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Nella Snapper and Jeanne Ravenhorst.

Jack Dunn Sr.

  Jack Dunn Sr., of Bellingham, passed away on Wednesday, April 30, 2008. He was 79 years old.

  Norman Eugene Clem, of Yakima, passed away on Thursday, May 1, 2008, at the age of 64.

  Floyd Irving Forbes, of Lynden, passed away on Friday, May 2, 2008, at his home in Lynden.
Forbes was 77 years old.

Darrell Johnson
Announced on June 11, 2008 - 12:34am.

  Former Whatcom County resident Darrell Dean Johnson, passed away peacefully on May 29, 2008, after a courageous battle with cancer.
Darrell was born on March 7, 1934, in Bellingham to Carl E. and Thelma (VanEtten) Johnson. He attended the Meridian schools. In 1952, Darrell was drafted into the Army. He was stationed at Camp Roberts in California and Fort Richardson in Alaska, which he loved. After his discharge from the Army, he returned to Bellingham where he continued his dairy operation.

Pearly Omania Metz
Announced on June 11, 2008 - 12:33am.

  Pearly Omania Metz passed away on Friday, June 6, 2008, at the age of 36.
Visitation will be held at Westford Funeral Home on Wednesday, June 11, from 6 to 8 p.m. Funeral liturgy will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ferndale on Thursday, June 12, at 4 p.m., followed by a reception.
At her request, she will be laid to rest in Santander, Cebu Province, Philippines, at a Funeral Mass in the same church she was married in and in the same cemetery that their stillborn son, Javanie, is at rest, with her husband John and son James present.

Elaine Bogaard

  Elaine Ross Bogaard was born on March 14, 1917, and passed away on June 1, 2008.
Elaine was a daughter of Clark and Bertha Ross of Lynden. She graduated from Lynden Public School in 1935, as did her brothers Don and Phil. She married Arthur J. Bogaard, also of Lynden. They made their home in Seattle, where they raised two sons and a daughter. Arthur passed away in 1980.
She is survived by her brother Phil (Coralee); her sons Robert (Jan) and Greg (Beth); her daughter Margo (Michael); her grandchildren Amanda (Rob) and Ross; her great-grandchildren Jordan and Isis; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Donna Tremaine

  Donna Tremaine, age 86, died on Monday, June 9, 2008, at St. Joseph Hospital.

Dr. Justin Aalpoel

Dr. Justin Aalpoel, a retired thoracic surgeon, died on Sunday, May 25, 2008, at the age of 88.
Born in Wisconsin to Dutch immigrants and raised on a dairy farm in Lynden, he graduated from Hope College in Michigan and the University of Chicago School of Medicine. During the Korean War, he served as a captain with a Mobile Army Surgical Hospital (MASH), where he performed surgery, at times around the clock, and was awarded the Bronze Star.

Robert H. Sowden

Robert H. Sowden, born on Aug. 21, 1941 in Comox, B.C., passed away on May 29, 2008, at his home with his daughters and faithful kitty by his side.
Robert worked for Puget Power as a journeyman lineman and made many close friends during his 30-plus years of devoted service. Bob enjoyed sailing, traveling, scuba diving, watching westerns and spending time with his loving family and friends.

Marybelle Spry

Marybelle Spry, of Everson, passed away on Friday, May 30, 2008. She was 74 years old. She was independent and a “survivor,” who kept going in spite of the odds.
Marybelle was born on March 17, 1934, in Hartford City, Ind., to Harley and Alma Smith Pierson. She spent the greater part of her life as a homemaker and mother. She loved her flowers (especially roses), camping, the Northwest Washington Fair and was active in the Eastern Star.

Aldrich DeVries

  Aldrich DeVries, surrounded by his loving wife and children, went home to be with the Lord on May 29, 2008.
Aldrich was born in Huntley, Mont., on Nov. 15, 1927, to John and Nellie (Groen) De-
Vries. They lived in Montana until Rich was 16 and relocated to Sumas. Aldrich married Marcella DeBoer on Jan. 15, 1948. Rich and Marcie raised their family of eight children in Seattle. They were blessed with many years of happy traveling adventures after retiring in 1989, with Mount Vernon as their home base.

Marian Peck

  Marian Peck, of Lynden, passed away on Thursday, May 29, 2008. She was 95 years old. She was loved and will be greatly missed.
Arrangements are with Moles Family Funeral Homes & Crematory, Lynden.

Holly Bertran

Holly Bertran passed away on May 18, 2008, from complications following surgery at Evergreen Hospital in Kirkland.
An incredibly talented musician, educator, husband, brother and friend, Holly was an inspiration to all in the way he chose to deal and live with the many challenges that were thrust upon him in his life. His compassion for others, humble demeanor, delight in word play, love for all things beautiful, passion for music, sensitive introspective nature, courage, and kindness made him a treasured caring giant of a man to all. With his beautiful smile, sparkling blue eyes, dry wit and robust laugh, he made you hear and feel warm musical tones and see the lovely rich colors of nature which he so loved.
