Edna Perera

Edna Perera went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Monday, June 23, 2008.
Edna was born on Jan. 24, 1936, in Lynden, the seventh child of Paul and Marie Van Dyken. She had a happy childhood growing up on a dairy and playing along the banks of the Nooksack River.

Clayone Carlson

Clayone Carlson, 77, of Fargo, N.D., died on Monday, June 16, 2008, at Elim Care Center in Fargo.
Clayone Jean Ellis was born on Feb. 23, 1931, in Crookston, Minn., a daughter of Henry and Jenny (Sundet) Ellis. She graduated from Crookston Central High School in 1949. She worked at Northwest Clinic until marrying Roy Carlson on Nov. 3, 1951, in Crookston. They lived in Breckenridge, Minn., and Wahpeton, N.D., until 1954, when they moved to Fargo. Roy died in 1993. Clayone worked at St. Luke’s Hospital, Lakeland Mental Health and West Acres.

Matthew Murphy
Announced on June 25, 2008 - 3:38pm.

  Matthew B. Murphy, age 90, of Lynden, passed peacefully into the presence of his Lord on June 22, 2008, at Lynden Christian Health Care Center.
Matt was preceded in death by his wife Annie in 1992.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; daughter Joanne (Simon) De Groot of Surrey, B.C.; son Albert (Arlene) Murphy of Lynden; son Bernie (Dorothy) Murphy of Richmond, B.C.; six grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild; and one sister, Eva Kroeze, of Marysville.

Betty Cline

  Betty Marion Cline passed away on Wednesday, June 18, 2008. She was 82 years old.
Her daughters wish to thank Highgate Cottage and Hospice for their loving care of their mom.

Bill Brim

Bill Brim, surrounded by his loving wife and children, went home to be with the Lord on June 14, 2008.
Bill was born in Longview, Wash., on Aug. 30, 1927, to Robert and Sylvia (Lybecker) Brim. He married Margaret Judd in Portland on Oct. 26, 1947. In 1949, Bill began his career in the tractor and implement business in Longview. They relocated to Lynden in 1962 and in 1966 bought out Ed Ohlson to begin Brim Tractor Co. He enjoyed many years of association with the people of Whatcom County and beyond till his retirement in 1987.

Genevive Fernon Henderson

Genevive Fernon Henderson, age 87, passed on away on Sunday, June 15, in Bellingham at Evergreen North Cascade.
She was born on March 8, 1921, in Yakima to Ben and Zella Dunlap. She graduated from Nooksack Valley High School in 1938 and from Bellingham Business College. Genevive married George (Bert) Henderson on July 3, 1941. When he was called to serve in the military, she followed him to numerous bases across the country until his unit left for the occupation of Europe. After the war, they settled on the Everson-Goshen Road where they lived for over 50 years. It was there they began the Yule Time Christmas Tree Ranch, which attracted many visitors for more than 25 years.

Harvey Donald Dooyema

Long-time Sumas resident Harvey Donald Dooyema, age 75, died on Wednesday, June 11, 2008.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, June 17, with burial in Monumenta Cemetery followed by a memorial service at Nooksack Valley Reformed Church, with Pastor Charles Kleinhesselink officiating.

Rev. Bernard Byma

Rev. Bernard Byma, a devoted servant of God, was received into the open and waiting arms of his loving Savior on Saturday, June 21, 2008, at the age of 83.
Bernard was born in the Netherlands on Jan. 28, 1925, to Ralph and Augusta (Vander Schaaf) Byma. Following his family’s immigration to the United States in 1930, Bernard grew up on a dairy farm in Bellflower, Calif. He served in the U.S. Army in Korea from 1946 to 1947. Bernard graduated from Calvin College and Calvin Seminary, and was ordained as a minister in the Christian Reformed Church in 1953. He went on to serve churches in Bellwood, Ill.; Lynden, Wash; Denver, Colo.; and Hudsonville, Mich. Following his retirement, Bernard participated fully in the activities and ministry of the South Grandville, Mich., CRC.

Jack Pen
Announced on July 2, 2008 - 3:35pm.

  Jack Pen died in Bellingham on June 29, 2008, at the age of 78.
Terry Patterson will preside over the memorial service that will be at 7 p.m. on Monday, July 7, 2008, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, 2935 Birchwood Ave., Bellingham, where Jack served as an elder.
Jack was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 38 years, Rosetta; four sons, Mike (wife Laura), Gene (wife Nicci), Andy (significant other Dee Dee), all of Kennewick, and Del (wife Roxi) of Idaho; two daughters, Violia Koontz (husband Cubby) and Sally Tews (husband Bob); brothers Allen (wife Gladys) and Bill (wife Shirley) of Whatcom County, Keith (wife Colleen) of Idaho and Gregory (wife LaVerne) of Arizona; sister Bonnie Wallace (husband Ron) of Whatcom County; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.

Tom Hunter
Announced on July 2, 2008 - 3:35pm.

  Tom Hunter, of Bellingham, passed away on Friday, June 20, 2008. He was 61 years old.
A memorial service was held on Saturday, June 28, 2008, at First Congregational Church of Bellingham.
Arrangements are with Moles Family Funeral Homes & Crematory, Lynden.

Clayone Jean Ellis was born on Feb. 23, 1931, in Crookston, Minn., a daughter of Henry and Jenny (Sundet) Ellis. She graduated from Crookston Central High School in 1949. Nicholas “Nick” L. Brann
Nicholas “Nick” L. Brann, age 26, of Lynden, died on Saturday, July 12, 2008, as the result of a traffic accident.
  Nick was born on Sept. 21, 1981, in Bellingham to Jerry and Wendy Brann and had been a lifelong Lynden resident. Graduating from Lynden Christian High School in 2000, he was employed as a mechanic at Lynden Service Center. An avid outdoorsman, he loved water sports, hunting, fishing and dirt biking. On June 21, 2008, he was married to Nicole Behm in Wenatchee.

John Allen Schoneveld
John Allen Schoneveld died suddenly on July 8, 2008, at the age of 63.
  He was born on April 4, 1945, in Downey, Calif., to John and Henrietta (DeGroot) Schoneveld and was married to his high school sweetheart, Lori, for 43 years.

Ada M. Kunkel
Ada M. Kunkel, age 93, of Lynden, died at St. Joseph Hospital on Saturday, July 12.
  Ada was a daughter of James and Ada (Wallace) Brodie and was born near Black Diamond, Wash., on Feb. 23, 1915. Ada grew up in Black Diamond and following graduation from high school worked as a secretary before her marriage to Ronald Kunkel in Tacoma in June 1953. Together they operated a grocery store in Tacoma. Mr. Kunkel died in 1985 and Ada moved to Lynden in 2000. She attended First Baptist Church in Lynden and also enjoyed doing yard work and tending her flowers. While in Tacoma, she was a member of the Republican Club.

Caroline E. Bauer
Lynden resident Caroline E. Bauer, age 93, died on Saturday, July 12, 2008, at the Christian Health Care Center. She was born Aug. 14, 1914, in Bredtheim, Germany, to Karl and Kathrina Radke.
  Caroline was preceded in death by her five siblings, Erich, Jacob, Philipp, Mathilda and Heinrich. She is survived by her son, Eric Bauer, of Lynden.

Marion Smithey
Announced July 16, 2008 - 2:39pm.
  Marion Walda Smithey passed away on July 7, 2008, in Sumas, where she had resided for over 25 years. She was 85 years old.
  Marion’s gifts to the world were many. She was a caring nurse, outstanding teacher, devoted wife, ever-patient mother and grandmother and loving caretaker to her mother Hulda and daughter Jean, who both preceded her in death. Additionally, Marion was a true friend to all who gave of herself to anyone in need. One of her grandchildren remarked that she had never met a stranger and that she could obtain someone’s life story in a first meeting! Marion will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Margaret J. Gischer
Margaret J. Gischer, commonly known to all her friends as “Peggy” (and to those on the CB as “Peg Leg”), died from natural causes on June 15, 2008, after living to three weeks short of her 98th birthday.
  Peggy was born in Seattle, where she graduated from high school and continued her education shortly thereafter in Washington, D.C., by attending and graduating with honors from a local college there.

Pearl Lorraine Kazinsky
Pearl Lorraine Kazinsky began life in Tacoma, Wash., on Feb. 22, 1918, born to Ora (Harrison) and Carl Kimbel. She passed away on July 2, 2008.
  From the age of 9 until 14, she went to Visitation Villa Catholic Boarding School. At 14, she moved to Mayo City, Yukon Territory, Canada, with her father.

Lucia Groom

  Lucia Groom, of Bellingham, passed away on Sunday, June 29, 2008. She was 92 years old.
