Lamb, Charles O.

Charles G. Lamb, a former Kitsap resident, died in Grand Coulee on Nov. 25, 2001. He was 81 years old. He was born to Charles G. and Eugenia (Stickney) Lamb in Seattle on May 31, 1920. He was educated at Queen Anne High School in Seattle and taught at Edison Vocational School. On Dec. 21, 1940, he married Elnora ěJackieî Carton in Seattle. They owned and operated Lamb Rockeries in Seattle and Kitsap County. He enjoyed wood carving, Northwest Indian art, and boating. He was a member of the Desert Rat Patrol in Yuma, Ariz. and the Indianola Community Chuch. He is survived by his wife Jackie of the family home in Grand Coulee; sons John (Alta) Lamb of Onalaska, and Jim (Linda) Lamb of Yuma; daughter Kathleen (Larry) Jacobson of Grand Coulee; brother Eugene

Eide, Bernard

Bernard Cato Eide, Kingston, died Nov. 22, 2001 in Bremerton. He was 83 years old. He was born Dec. 30 1917 in Rush City, Minn. He served in the U.S. Army from 1942 to 1945. He worked as a logger in Washington until 1959, then as a farmer and a mechanic in South and North Dakota until 1980, when he returned to Washington. His brother Kenneth Edie, Salt Lake City, Utah and sister Dorothy Gustafson, Kingson, survive him. At his request, no services will be held. Inurnment will be at Cherry Grove Cemetery. Arranagements are by Stone Chapel in Poulsbo.

Somers, Victoria

Victoria Louise Somers, Kingston, died Dec. 8, 2001 at Childrenís Hospital in Seattle. She was 9 years old.

She was born March 19, 1992 and attended Island School on Bainbridge Island where she was a fourth-grader.

According to her classmates at Island School, she was full of life and happy energy and brightened the lives of everyone around her. She always wanted to hurry up and try things. ěI have a lot of play in me,î she said.

Victoria loved math and wrote long creative stories that went on for chapters. She was obsessed with Harry Potter and was thrilled to see the movie.

She built great forts in the woods behind the school and around her home and always had a project going.

She was an enthusiastic Camp Fire Girl and had a propensity for service projects.

Victoria loved animals of all kinds, especially herons, llama

Wilson, George M.

George M. Wilson, Indianola, died Dec. 8, 2001 on Bainbridge Island. He was 79 years old.

He was born Dec. 11, 1921 in Seattle to Mahlon and Myra (Reasoner) Wilson.

In 1939, he graduated from Lincoln High School. He entered the U.S. Air Corp and rose to the rank of Major. He served in the European Campaign during WWII and flew 28 missions as lead pilot.

He attended the University of Washington School of Architecture and was an architect and builder in the north Seattle area. He enjoyed flying his Cessna, water and snow skiing, sailing, golfing and his family and friends.

Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Betty Wilson of Indianola, son Steven M. Wilson of Manson, daughter Christine W. Cercone of Indianola, granddaughters Ashley Kate Wilson and Danielle Cercone and grandsons Ja

Lawrence, Jack

John H. ěJackî Lawrence, Indianola, died of cancer Dec. 8, 2001 at Harrison Hospital. He was 47 years old.

He was born May 16, 1954 in Yakima to Charles R. and Anne R.(Berg) Lawrence.

In l972, he graduated from North Kitsap High School.

He served in the U.S. Navy for 20 years, retiring in 1992 as an E-7.

His interests included baseball, football and wrestling. He was a member of St. Olafís Church in Poulsbo.

He is survived by his fiancee Marianne Gagne, Indianola; parents Charles R. and Anne R. Lawrence; ward Frank Woodsum, Indianola; daughter Starlynn Gagne, Indianola; brothers James R. William J. Lawrence and Donald C. McKinney, all of Suquamish; sisters Marjorie R. Lanegan, Carnation, Marilyn G. Jones of Suquamish and Barbara A. Lawrence of Kingston and one grandchild

Fraser, Bethal

Bethal Downey Fraser, formerly of Indianola, died Dec. 7, 2001 in Yuma, Ariz. He was 91 years old.

He was born June 20, 1910 in Waterville to Henry and Laura (Potter) Fraser.

He graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1929 and the University of Washington in 1932.

During World War II, he was a member of the Merchant Marines.

He married Eleanor Engle and they lived on Indianola Road (Miller Bay) for 30 years and raised their family there.

For many years he was a rural mail carrier.

He also served as assistant postmaster at the Poulsbo Post Office.

He was Past Master of Lincoln Heights Grange, a member of the Suquamish Congregational Church, a member of Sierra Vista Presbyterian Church; past master of Warren G. Harding Masonic Lodge in Poulsbo and Port Gamble Masonic Lodge #5 in Port Gamble.

Roxie A. Kious
Nov. 1, 1917 - Dec. 10, 2001

Port Angeles artist Roxie A. Kious died at the age of 84.

She was born in New Castle, Ind., to John Ernest and Rosa A. (Cassity) Elam, and she graduated from Mount Summit High School in Mount Summit, Ind., in 1935.

She married Harroll Kriner on May 28, 1938; he preceded her in death. In 1986, she married Ralph Kious; he died Oct. 28, 2001.

During her married life, she was a production worker at the Delco Remy division of General Motors Corporation and also owned and operated a farm near Kennard, Ind.

Mrs. Kious had a great love of art, and she studied painting under Russian painter Sergia Bongart and American painter Elizabeth Dodd Shafer. In the 1980s, Mrs. Kious took two painting tours, one with Professor George Cherpov to Germany and Iceland, and the other to Athens and four Greek islands.

After retiring, Mrs. Kious moved to Port Angeles, where she taught painting for six years in the continuing education classes at Peninsula College. She also judged several art shows.

Mrs. Kious was active in the Masonic Order of Amaranth and the First Christian Church in Port Angeles. She and her husband also spent a lot of their retirement time traveling.

Mrs. Kious is survived by a brother, Jack Elam of Syracuse, Ind., and two grandchildren. In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by a son, David, and a daughter, Scarlett.

Services: Memorial service Saturday, Dec. 22, at 2 p.m. in Drennan & Ford Funeral Home, 260 Monroe Road, Port Angeles. The Rev. David Moffitt, pastor of the First Christian Church, will officiate. Private burial will be in Mount Angeles Memorial Park.

William Thomas Mahaffey

Sept. 14, 1928 -- Dec. 12, 2001

Forks resident William Thomas Mahaffey died at the age of 73.

A full obituary will be published at a later date.

Burial services were held at Tahoma National Cemetery. Memorial services will be announced later. Mount Olympus Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Helen Alvina Nelson

Aug. 22, 1913 -- Dec. 15, 2001

Port Angeles resident Helen Alvina Nelson died at the age of 88.

She was born in Seattle to Hans and Borghild (Hanson) Strandgard. She married John W. Nelson on Dec. 23, 1937; he died July 1, 1989.

Mrs. Nelson lived in the Ballard area of Seattle for 50 years; the Nelsons owned and operated a car lot in Ballard, where Mrs. Nelson helped until moving to Port Angeles to be near her son.

She was a member of the Hillcrest Baptist Church and was active in the Port Angeles Senior Center.

Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, Roy E. and Ann Nelson of Port Angeles; grandchildren and spouses Cynthia and Clint Austin of Port Angeles and Robin and Bill Coppo of North Bend; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Services: Sunday, Dec. 23, at 12:30 p.m., memorial service at the Hillcrest Baptist Church, 205 Black Diamond Road, Port Angeles, with the Rev. Mike Neal officiating. Drennan & Ford is in charge.

Memorials: Salvation Army, P.O. Box 2229, Port Angeles WA 98362.

FELTON GARRISON SHRINER

Oct. 25, 1897 - Dec. 24, 2001

Felton Garrison Shriner, born October 25, 1897, to Estella Jose Shriner and Watson Shriner, at Manchester, Washington, died December 24, 2001, at age 104.

He was raised by his mother and stepfather Arthur Strahl, growing up with his stepsister Dorothy herding cattle in the prairies of eastern Washington. Felton joined the Army during World War I, enrolling in Officers Training at University of Washington in 1918, during which time he surveyed the entire campus as a class project. He taught all 8 grades in a one-room school in the Big Bend area for several years.

Felton married Marian Northrup in 1923, and they had four children. He was remarried in 1939 to Grace Shriner, and they had three children.

Felton is survived by sons Jack Shriner of Orondo, Wash., and Scott Shriner of Palm Springs, Calif., and daughters Doris Thrush of Wenatchee, Wash., Joyce Roberts of Kirkland, Wash., Rebecca Shambroich of Port Angeles, Wash., and Gay Landry of Tacoma, Wash. Felton leaves 13 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by brother Robert, stepsister Dorothy Holbert, son Robert Dale, and grandson Allen.

Felton Shriner lived in three centuries. He was a great outdoorsman, blazing trails in the Olympics before it was a park to fish every lake and stream. He helped pioneer the apple orchard industry in Wenatchee, worked on the original amusement park sets for Walt Disney, drove the first car on the farm at age 12, built the only crystal radio in the neighborhood, witnessed the landing of Pangborn's first trans-Pacific flight, and worked on Grand Coulee Dam.

He worked in construction in Port Angeles since 1938 and opened Shriner's Cabinet Shop on Golf Course Road. He lived year-round on the south shore of Lake Sutherland before there was a road, and was an elder in First Presbyterian Church, where he taught Sunday School and gave children's sermons.

Above all, he was a peaceful and happy man, accepting life as it came, truly without worry or stress. He quietly loved his family and friends, and is remembered as a good man. His intelligence and practical advice was a gift to us all. He remains to us a symbol of our heritage and what is right with the world.

Memorial service is planned for January 5th, 2 p.m., at Laurel Park Assisted Living.

Dorothy Lee Karacadag - Feb. 5, 1917 - -- - Jan. 1, 2002

Deaths and Funeral Notices

A Sequim resident since 1998, Dorothy Lee Karacadag died at the age of 84.

Mrs. Karacadag was born in Paris, Texas, to Allen Lee and Unah Lee (Saye) Edwards.

She attended schools in Arizona, graduating from Phoenix Union High School in 1934, and from Phoenix Junior College, where she studied business in 1936.

Her career included being a retail business owner, selling real estate and working for the Arizona Republic and Phoenix Gazette.

On Feb. 23, 1943, she married Albert M. Austin in Phoenix. He died in March 1974.

She married Kazim Karacadag on Dec. 7, 1980, in Phoenix. He died on Feb. 5, 1989.

Besides living for many years in Phoenix, Mrs. Karacadag also lived for 12 years in Istanbul, Turkey

She enjoyed travel, reading and art. Mrs. Karacadag was an active volunteer member of the Maricopa County Hospital Auxiliary, where she served as a board member for eight years. She also volunteered at the Sequim Visitors Center.

She was a member of the Sequim Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include son Dr. James A. Austin, retired admiral in the Naval Reserve, of Sunset Beach, Calif.; daughter and son-in-law Alaine Austin and Clark Reeves of Sequim; five grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Services: Saturday, Jan. 5, 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. visitation preceding funeral services at 11 a.m., at Sequim Valley Chapel, 108 W. Alder, Sequim. Dr. Scott Koenigsaecker will officiate. Inurnment at Mount Angeles Memorial Park.

William Thomas Mahaffey

Sept. 14, 1928 -- Dec. 17, 2001

Forks resident William Thomas Mahaffey died at the age of 73.

Mr. Mahaffey was born in Big Piney, Wyo., to William Lewis and Joannie May (Garris) Mahaffey.

He served in the Air Force during the Korean War.

Mr. Mahaffey moved to Forks from Portland, Ore., in 1996.

He enjoyed the outdoors, fishing, walking and gardening.

Survivors include brother James Mahaffey of Washington and sister Joan Poulas of Hoquiam. He was preceded in death by sister Sirritha Franklin on May 29, 1983.

Services: Saturday, Jan. 5, 2 p.m. memorial at First Baptist Church, 651 S. Forks Ave., Forks. The Rev. Bob Schwartz will officiate. Burial at Tahoma National Cemetery. Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Helen D. McComas

Dec. 1, 1910 -- Dec. 31, 2001

Port Angeles resident Helen D. McComas died at the age of 91.

Mrs. McComas was born in Port Townsend to Edward H. and Esther Marie (Anderson) Keepers.

On Sept. 19, 1934, she married Stanley McComas in Anacortes. He preceded her in death.

Mrs. McComas enjoyed gardening and spending time with family and friends.

She was a member of Philanthropic Education Organization and the Port Angeles Garden Club.

Survivors include daughter Kay Wiley of Port Angeles; brother Edward Keepers; niece Ginger Anconetani of Seattle whom she raised from the age of nine; grandchildren Andrea Wiley of Port Angeles, Jim Wiley of Reno, Nev., and Jeff Wiley of Guam; and great-grandson Cameron Sizemore of Port Angeles.

Services: None, at her request. Arrangements by Olympic Cremation Association.

Opal S. McLaughlin-Ralston

Dec. 4, 1908 --Dec. 7, 2001

At age 93, Opal S. McLaughlin-Ralston died in Crestwood Convalescent Center in Port Angeles.

She was born in Maxwelton on Whidbey Island to Adelbert Eager and Hazel Mildred (DeWitt) Smith.

On Jan. 27, 1929, she married Lionel J. McLaughlin; he died Jan. 30, 1967.

She became the wife of Graham W. Ralston on July 7, 1979 in Port Angeles; he died in May 1995.

In addition to being co-owner of Mac's Laundromat and Washington Apartments, she was owner of Carroll Realty until retirement.

Mrs. McLaughlin-Ralston was the second woman to be named as a Washington state Real Estate Commissioner and, in 1969, was named Woman of the Year for the state of Washington by the National Association of Real Estate Brokers.

A lifetime member of Soroptimist, she served as president from 1960-61 and was honored as a Soroptimist Woman of Distinction in 1989; served two four-year terms on the Governor's Council on Aging; and was grand marshal of Derby Days

Mrs. McLaughlin-Ralston belonged to First Baptist Church, Eastern Star, the Historical Society of Clallam County, Variety Club and the Gerald M. Lauridsen Foundation.

Survivors include daughter-in-law Doris McLaughlin of Bullhead City, Ariz.; and grandchildren Pamela Morrison of Olympia and Jerry McLaughlin of Wilbur; four great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by brothers Carroll, Keith and Gerald Smith.

Services: Saturday, Jan. 12, at 1:30 p.m., memorial in First Baptist Church, 106 W. Sixth St., Port Angeles, with the Rev. George Boudet officiating. A reception will follow. Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
