James H. Pyles

Jan. 13, 1931 -- March 14, 2002

James H. Pyles died in his Sequim home at age 71 of complications from Parkinson's disease.

Born in Bryan, Texas, to James Jackson and Margaret Parlee (Hopkins) Pyles, he served in the National Guard prior to joining the Air Force for duty during the Korean War from 1950 to 1954.

While serving with the military, he attended school at Oklahoma Agricultural and Mechanical College, at which time he met and married Wilma Dean Baird on Oct. 4, 1951, in Henryetta, Okla. He also saw duty in Fairbanks, Alaska, as an airman first class.

After being discharged, Mr. Pyles made his home in Houston. In 1961, during the process of moving his family to Fairbanks, Alaska, he stopped for a visit in Port Angeles where he decided to stay.

The Pyleses lived in Port Angeles until 1977, when they relocated to Sequim.

From 1961 to 1973, Mr. Pyles worked at Howard's Ski Marina. Then he was employed by RLR Motors until he was too disabled by Parkinson's disease.

Additionally, he was licensed to sell real estate.

A member of Wapiti Bowmen's Club in Port Angeles, Mr. Pyles was an avid hunter and fisherman, known by many as ``Big Jim.''

He was a life-member of Disabled American Veterans and attended Independent Bible Church in Port Angeles until illness prevented further participation. He was also a member of Faith Memorial Baptist Church in Houston.

Survivors include his wife; daughters and sons-in-law Donna and Sam Parks and Rina and Pat Matthews, all of Port Angeles, and Tina and Cliff Rocheleau of Sequim; sister Leoma Tessmer of Sequim; grandchildren Jamie and Jessica Parks, and Danielle and Tim Rocheleau; and step-grandchildren Michael Rocheleau, Kristy Norman and Kirk Matthews.

Services: Private family services will be at a later time. Drennan & Ford Funeral Home, Port Angeles, is in charge of arrangements.

Robert L. Roufley

June 24, 1946 -- March 13, 2002

Forks resident Robert L. Roufley died at age 55.

He was born in Port Townsend to Loyd and Margaret (Lummers) Roufley.

After serving two tours in Vietnam with the Navy, he married Peggy Ostendorf on Nov. 1, 1978, in Port Angeles.

Mr. Roufley moved to Forks in 1984 and worked for Allen Logging Co. the last 17 years.

He enjoyed riding motorcycles, working on cars and doing carpentry. He was a member of Olympic Peninsula Independent Woodworkers Union.

Mr. Roufley is survived by his wife; son Jamie Roufley of Rhode Island; daughters Kristi and Nichole Roufley, both of Forks, Teres Weed Fletcher of Port Angeles and Tina Weed Leavitt of Bellingham; father of Sequim; sister Mary Reyes of Sequim; and four grandchildren. His mother died in 1994.

Services: Monday, March 18, at 2 p.m., memorial in First Baptist Church, 8 Forks Ave., Forks. Pastor Bob Schwartz will officiate. Mount Olympus Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Alice E. Sell

Oct. 20, 1910 -- March 11, 2002

Alice Emelia Sell died in Kah Tai Care Center in Port Townsend at age 91.

The eldest of 10 children, she was born to Edward William and Fannie (Jones) Thomsen in Denio, Harney County, Ore., where she made her home until moving to Westfall, Ore., in 1931.

On June 18, 1935, she married Frank A. White in Payette, Idaho.

The Whites raised eight children while traveling throughout Oregon, Idaho and Washington states before settling in Jefferson County about 1949. Her husband worked in the forest industry and became active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, holding the position of high priest until his death Sept. 18, 1962.

After this, she married commercial fisherman William J. Sell on Jan. 3, 1969, while living in Forks; they made their home in Shine. At his death March 10, 1976, she turned her energies to service in church and community until illness interfered.

Mrs. Sell was a grassroots person who helped establish the Community Action program and was instrumental in opening the Hadlock/Chimacum Community Center. She helped establish Jefferson Transit, serving as a board member for many years, and was a 10-year volunteer for United Good Neighbors of Jefferson County. She was, also a member of Jefferson County Juvenile Diversion Board.

Perhaps her happiest memory was that of being elected Tri-Area Community Center Senior Rhody Queen in 1978.

Mrs. Sell's survivors include son Joseph White of Port Townsend; daughters Eleanor Christensen of Oak Harbor, Elizabeth Lammers of Port Hadlock, Frances Whitley of Marysville and Dorothy Yantz of Port Townsend; brother Ronald Thomsen of Eagle, Idaho; sisters Cora Hawks of New Plymouth and Edna McDonald of Chimacum; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by son Frank Edward White, daughters Carol Lee White and Evelyn Elaine Craney and grandson Michael Lammers.

Services: Friday, March 22, at 11 a.m., dedication of the grave in Laurel Grove Cemetery, Port Townsend, with Bishop Jeff Porter officiating, immediately preceding the noon memorial service in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Chimacum, with Bishop Joe Thomsen directing. Luncheon will be at 1 p.m. in the multipurpose room of the church. Kosec Funeral Home, Port Townsend, is in charge of arrangements.

Jerome `Jerry' M. Skorcz

May 26, 1935 -- March 8, 2002

Former Port Angeles resident Jerome ``Jerry'' Martin Skorcz died of cardiac arrest in Scheller, Ill., where he was born to Leo Frank and Zettie (Brown) Skorcz.

From 1958 to 1960, he was an Army specialist in amphibious repair and engineering.

After the service, he worked for General Motors in St. Louis until 1983 and for Olympic Printers in Port Angeles from 1989 to 2001.

Mr. Skorcz liked reading. He also enjoyed nature in general and birds in particular. He loved entertaining his grandchildren.

He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife; daughters and sons-in-law Karen and Donald Schneider of Belleville, Ill., and Marie and Kelly Gabriel of Port Angeles; brothers Joe of Du Quoin, Ill., Charles of Tamaroa, Ill., and Ralph of Ellis Grove, Ill.; sister Rose Marie Pestka of Scheller, Ill.; and five grandchildren.

Services: Funeral was held March 11 in Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with the Rev. James H. Van Oss celebrating. Burial was in Crossroads Cemetery, Perryville, Mo., with Donald Schneider officiating. Searby Funeral Home, Tamaroa, Ill. was in charge of arrangements.

Mabel Irene `Rene' Brown

Feb. 18, 1930 -- March 18, 2002

At age 72, Mabel Irene ``Rene'' Brown of Marrowstone Island died in Nordland from complications due to strokes.

She was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, to Charles W. and Edith (Roberts) Crookes and grew up in Canada before moving to Oceanside, Calif., where she graduated from high school and, on May 20, 1950, married Dale L. Brown.

In addition to being a lifelong volunteer worker in both her community and church, Mrs. Brown greatly enjoyed the outdoors, traveling with her husband and meeting people.

She is survived by her husband; son Wade Brown of Stockton, Calif.; daughters Debbi Hume of Chico, Calif., and Charleen Brown of Santa Rosa, Calif.; mother of Lewiston, Idaho; brothers Cliff Crookes of Fort St. James, Canada, and Rex Crookes of Lewiston, Idaho; sister Sharon Baker of Pomona, Calif.; 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father, two brothers and a great-grandson.

Services: Thursday, March 21, at 1:30 p.m., visitation in Kosec Funeral Home, 1615 Parkside Drive, Port Townsend, immediately preceding the 2 p.m. service at which the Rev. Dan McMillan will officiate, in the funeral home's chapel.

Gordon Eldridge Davis

April 25, 1931 -- March 15, 2002

At age 70, Gordon Eldridge Davis died in his Sequim home.

He was born in Everett to Clarence Ira and Mary Elizabeth (Dillman) Davis.

Formerly a resident of Hartford, he owned and operated Selective Logging Co.; much of his work was in the areas of Discovery Bay and Port Angeles.

At one time, he owned a ranch in Lake Stevens, loved horses and operated Pilchuck Valley Riding Club.

Mr. Davis moved to Sequim in 1970.

He greatly enjoyed fishing and camping and was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and Eagles.

Survivors include sons Jim Lee Davis of Lake Stevens and Gene A. Davis of Sequim; daughter Connie Louise Lakey of Lake Stevens; and grandchildren Erica, Corey, Michael, Abbey and Jordon. He was preceded in death by a brother, Donald Davis.

Services: At a later time, memorial will be held at Lake Stevens. Drennan & Ford Funeral Home, Port Angeles, is in charge of arrangements.

Brian F. Haller

Nov. 18, 1933 -- March 16, 2002

Brian F. Haller died in his Port Angeles home from pancreatic cancer. He was 68.

Born in London to Thomas George and Doreen Maude (Mead) Costin, he served with the Army's 82nd Airborne Division. He lived in Port Angeles for 45 years, working as a route manager for Olympic Laundry for more than 20 years and as a custodian with the Port Angeles School District until his retirement.

He enjoyed boating, hunting and shooting and was a member of the National Rifle Association. He also enjoyed his grandchildren and was a volunteer for Sequim Little League.

Mr. Haller married Mary Delphine Anders on Nov. 25, 1959, in Port Angeles; she died March 22, 1990.

Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law Ronald and Mary Haller and Michael and Holly Haller, all of Port Angeles, and son Richard Haller of Arlington; daughter and son-in-law Cherie and Mel Hendrickson of Sequim; brother Grant Haller of Lynnwood; sister Mickey Erickson of Oak Harbor; and eight granddaughters. He was preceded in death by both of his parents and by stepfather Ed Haller.

Services: Friday, March 22 at 1 p.m., graveside in Mount Angeles Memorial Park, U.S. Highway 101 and Monroe Road, Port Angeles. Wayne Yamamoto will officiate. Drennan & Ford Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Gertrude Bennett Kannair

May 14, 1908 -- March 15, 2002

Gertrude Bennett Kannair died in Sequim at age 93.

She was born in Minneapolis to Walter James and Pearl (Robinson) Bennett and grew up in Seattle, where she graduated from West Seattle High School.

On June 6, 1928, she married John H. Kannair in Seattle.

The Kannairs lived in Ballard and Edmonds before retiring to Tillamook, Ore. In the late 1970s, she moved to Sequim.

Mrs. Kannair was active in Eastern Star, Amaranth and Job's Daughters, and belonged to St. Luke's Episcopal Church.

She was an excellent cook, a gardener and an avid reader.

She is survived by her sister and brother-in-law Ann and Carleton Rutledge of Denver, and nieces Judy Woodard of Olympia, Carolyn Lien of Shelton and Bonnie Abker of Lincoln City, Ore. One brother, James Carleton Bennett, preceded her in death.

Services: Today, March 20, at 1 p.m., memorial in St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 525 N. Fifth St., Sequim, with the Rev. Robert Rhoads officiating. Final disposition will be in Ocean View Cemetery, 3127 W. 18th St., Port Angeles. Sequim Valley Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Jodi Malfatti

Jan. 4, 1952 -- March 15, 2002

At age 50, Jodi Malfatti died in Sequim.

She was born in Seattle to Dale H. and Ruth J. (Partridge) Schrammeck and married Phil Malfatti.

Mrs. Malfatti had an abiding love of the ocean and mountains, as well as of her family and friends.

She is survived by her husband; son Jason Wood and daughter Julie Heidal, both of Puyallup; and five grandchildren.

Services: Saturday, Sept. 23, at 1 p.m., memorial in St. Anselm of Canterbury Church, 152 W. Maple St., Sequim. Olympic Cremation Association is in charge of arrangements.

Emerson E. `Ric' Richter

Oct. 16, 1925 -- March 18, 2002

Sequim resident Emerson E. ``Ric'' Richter died at age 76.

He was born in Holyrood, Kan., to Elmer Ross and Frances Lona (Brubaker) Richter and made a Great Depression migration from the Dust Bowl to Oregon.

In 1943, he joined the Merchant Marine, in which he served until 1945.

Mr. Richter managed a large chicken hatchery in Oregon, after which he was a sales representative for Stocklin Supply, which marketed animal health products. From 1971 to 1975, while with Stocklin Supply, he received many awards for outstanding sales. He retired in 1991.

While living in Sequim, Mr. Richter was a active in Dungeness Community Church and had an interest in woodworking, fishing, boating and gardening.

On Sept. 1, 1992, he married Dorothy Sage-Saxton in Reno, Nev.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Richter's survivors include daughters and sons-in-law Diane E. and Grant Mangold of Linn Grove, Iowa; Carol Lynn and Gene Wood of Glendora, Calif.; and Marcia Ann and Jeff Taylor of Bonney Lake. Also eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by son Dan.

Services: Thursday, March 21, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., visitation in Sequim Valley Chapel, 104 W. Alder St., Sequim; Friday, March 22, at 2 p.m. memorial in Dungeness Community Church, 45 Eberle Lane, with Pastor Neil Smith officiating. Private interment will be in Mountain View Cemetery, Auburn.

DAVID B. MALINE, M.D.

Jan. 2, 1935 -- March 18, 2002

Dr. David Maline, M.D., passed away March 18 in Seattle, Wash., at the age of 67.

Dr. Maline was a graduate of Dartmouth College and Boston University Medical School. At Dartmouth, he was picked as a senior fellow, an honor reserved for students of unusual intellect and promise.

During his medical studies, he spent time at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia where Dr. C. Everett Koop called him an exceptional individual.

Between 1962 and 1963, Dr. Maline served his internship at Massachusetts Memorial Hospital, Providence Veterans Admin-istration Hospital and Boston City Hospital. He was a resident in neurological surgery at Boston City Hospital, and was Chief Resident at Lahey Clinic in 1966 and 1967.

He moved to Southern California in 1967, where he went into private practice as a neurosurgeon specializing in spinal and intracranial surgery until his retirement in 1998. During that time, he served on the hospital staff at City of Hope National Medical Center, Arcadia Methodist Hospital, San Gabriel Valley Medical Center, Huntington Memorial Hospital, the Methodist Hospital of Southern California, St. Luke Medical Center, San Dimas Community Hospital, Foothill Presbyterian Hospital, and Queen of the Valley Hospital.

Due to changes in his health, he developed an interest in the relationship between healing the skin and electromagnetic fields of the body. He moved to Port Ludlow, Wash., where he founded J. P. Durga to develop skin care products that incorporated these principles.

Dr. David Maline will be remembered as a humanitarian, a warm and generous person and an avid yachtsman.

He is survived by Michael Fessler, his sister Diane Aaron, nephews Daniel and Josh Aaron, and their children Ross, Eric, Jacob, James and Justin.

Services will be held Friday, March 22, at noon at the Green Funeral Home, Beach Road, Fairfield, Conn.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the Northwest Kidney Foundation, Port Angeles Bay, 700 Broadway, Seattle, WA 98122.
