Hubert Richmond Crozier

Jan. 24, 1916 -- Nov. 7, 2002

Sequim resident Hubert Richmond Crozier died of cancer at age 86.

He was born in Coalinga, Calif., to Hubert Richmond and Clare Mabel (Haskins) Crozier and, on Aug. 27, 1959, married Helen Edith Wild in Carson City, Nev.

Mr. Crozier served with the Navy and was a teacher in Palo Alto, Calif., where he lived for 16 years before he moved to Sequim in 1975.

He was a barbershop singer, a fly fisherman, a member of SunLand Golf Association, and founded an annual block party on San Juan Drive in SunLand.

Mr. Crozier is survived by son Larry George Crozier of Downey, Calif.; daughter Karen Sue Bailey; sisters Lois Hogal (age 89) and Corrine Collins (age 92); nine grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

His wife died March 22, 1998.

Services: Services will be private. Sequim Valley Chapel is in charge.

James `Dewey' Guy

July 15, 1939 -- Nov. 11, 2002

Port Angeles-born James ``Dewey" Guy of Spanaway died of cardiac arrest in Tacoma. He was 63.

The son of Hans and Viola (Guy) Johnson, he served in the Navy and was a lay minister.

Mr. Guy, who was interested in political issues and an AA counselor for the Puyallup and Chehalis tribes, was a member of both the Shaker Church and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was a fisherman who loved the ocean and belonged to the Canoe Club.

Mr. Guy's marriage to Angie Johnson, in White Swan, ended in divorce.

He is survived by sons William Dewey Johnson Jr. of Tacoma and Gabriel Johnson and Michael Johnson, both of Yelm; daughter Eleyana Johnson of Hoopa, Calif.; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by sister Azalia Davis.

Services: Friday, Nov. 15, from 11 a.m. to noon, visitation in Assembly of God Church, Third and Fort streets, Neah Bay, preceding the 1 p.m. funeral, also in the church. Andrew Winck will officiate. Burial will be in Neah Bay Cemetery. Lunch will be the Neah Bay community hall. Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel, Port Angeles, is in charge of arrangements.

Peter Hewitt Mortenson

March 22, 1913 -- Nov. 8, 2002

Sequim resident Peter Hewitt Mortenson died of cardiomyopathy in Port Angeles Care Center. He was 89.

Born to Nicholas and Joanna (Hewitt) Mortenson in Santa Rosa, Calif., where he earned his associate's degree, he was employed as a driver by Greyhound Bus Lines.

Mr. Mortenson had a close bond with his grandsons Phoenix Hanks, Gabriel Galanda and Roy Shick.

He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Sequim.

On April 10, 1948, he married Maxine Jamison in Las Vegas; she died April 13, 1990.

Mr. Mortenson is survived by three daughters: Maxine ``Edy" Mortenson, Nancy Hanks and Katie Mueller; three grandsons and four great-grandchildren.

Services: Private graveside services in Sequim View Cemetery will be under direction of Sequim Valley Chapel.

Memorials: Sequim Boys & Girls Club, P.O. Box 4167, Sequim, WA 98382.

Janice L. Gant Tompson

Aug 21, 1937 -- Nov. 8, 2002

Former Port Angeles title officer Janice L. (Welch) Gant Thompson died of cancer at age 65, at home with her family in Belmont, Calif.

She was born in Marion, Ind., to Ernie and Martha (Fineher) Welch and graduated from Jefferson High School in Marion, Ind., and from Purdue University in Lafayette, Ind.

Her 1958 marriage to Tom Thompson of Swayzee, Ind., ended in divorced in 1963; she married William J. Gant of Port Angeles in 1964; after their divorced in 1980, she remarried Tom Thompson in 1989 in Nevada.

She left Indiana in 1964 and lived in Port Angeles until 1985, where she was a title officer with Pioneer Title. Her 30 years employment in this field also included working at Old Republic and First American Title Co., both in San Mateo County, Calif.

Mrs. Thompson lived in Pearl City, Hawaii, from 1985 to 1986 then in Belmont, Calif., until the time of her death.

She was active in many civic activities, including City Council, PTA, Soroptimists and Little League. She also worked with Campfire Girls in Port Angeles.

Mrs. Thompson is survived by sons Scott Gant of Ellensburg, Michael Gant of Port Angeles and Marlin Gant of Belmont, Calif.; daughters Danell Gant of Belmont, Calif., and Stephanie Gant of Pocatello, Idaho; and 10 grandchildren.

Services: Today, Nov. 14, at 7 p.m., in White Oaks Chapel, 1696 El Camino Real, San Carlos, Calif. Chaplain John McNally will officiate. At a later time, in a private memorial, cremains will be spread by children and grandchildren.

Isabella D. Urbach

July 27, 1914 -- Nov. 9, 2002

Isabella D. Urbach died at age 88 of cardiac arrest in Olympic Medical Center, Port Angeles.

She was born to John Donald and Florance (Guthrie) Dundas in New York, where she grew up.

On Dec. 27, 1941, she married Nicholas George Urbach. During their marriage, she traveled throughout Europe. Following her husband's death on July 5, 1965, she made her home in Las Vegas for 14 years, working at Nellis Air Force Base.

In 1979, Mrs. Urbach retired to Port Angeles, where she was known as ``Grandma" to a generation of 4-H youths.

Survivors include daughter Nicole E. Murray of Port Angeles; brother James Dundas of Mount Holly, Va.; sister Helen Anderson of Hiawasse, Ariz.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Son Nicholas George Urbach Jr. died Dec. 20, 1980; and she was preceded in death by eight brothers and two sisters.

Services: At a later time, Celebration of Life. Drennan & Ford Funeral Home, Port Angeles, is in charge.

Memorials: Clallam County 4-H Leaders Council, WSU Extension Office, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles, WA 98362.

Charles Eugene `Gene' Coats

April 14, 1919 -- Nov. 12, 2002

After a lengthy illness, Charles Eugene ``Gene" Coats died in Forks Community Hospital at age 83.

He was born in Raymond to Charles Harrison and Mary Francis ``Mamie" (Horton) Coats. He served in England during World War II, when he was with the Army Air Corps from 1941to 1945.

On Nov. 12, 1948, he married Marilea Crawford in Pe Ell; they divorced in 1970.

Mr. Coats moved from Pe Ell in 1952 and drove log trucks for several companies before he bought his first truck, in partnership with Don Rhyne and later with Olson and Miller Logging Co. He was also a truck dispatcher for Fletcher and Fletcher and for Barry Swanson Trucking.

As a young man, Mr. Coats enjoyed hunting deer and elk, fishing for steelhead and hunting pheasant in eastern Washington with his German shorthair pointer dogs. Later, he was an avid collector, dealer and trader of firearms, specializing in Colt pistols.

Mr. Coats was a charter member of Forks Elks Lodge.

He is survived by his former wife and friend Marilea Koenke; son and daughter-in-law Dennis and Lila Coats of Craig, Alaska; daughter and son-in-law Debbie and Bruce Carnes and daughter and partner, Lynda Rowland and Joe Mayberry, all of Forks; 10 grandchildren and nine great- grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by brother Kenneth Coats.

Services: Friday, Nov. 14 at 11 a.m., memorial in Forks Elks Lodge, with the eulogy delivered by longtime friend Rocky Fletcher. Refreshments will follow. Olympic Cremation Association, Port Angeles, is in charge.

Ramona E. `Dolly' McVay

Nov. 19, 1960 -- Oct. 28, 2002

Port Angeles homemaker Ramona E. ``Dolly" McVay died at age 41.

She was born in Anchorage, Alaska, to Wilson H. and Henrietta M. (Katasse) Nicklie Sr.

She loved Port Angeles, where she had studied at Peninsula College, and treasured her dog Prince and cats Cinnamon and Kitty-Kat. Her favorite pastimes included reading.

Mrs. McVay, who belonged to the Tlingit and Athabascan tribes, was a member of the Alaskan Native Sisterhood and of the Salvation Army of Alaska.

She is survived by her companion since 1992, Eric Cranston; husband Randall Scott McVay, sons Randall Scott McVay Jr. and Timothy McVay and daughters Tami Y. Wilson and Melissa McVay, all of Tillamook, Ore.; mother Henrietta Haberman of Juneau, Alaska; grandmother Elizabeth Katasse of Sitka, Alaska; brothers Wilson Nicklie Jr., Tim Katasse Sr., and Shane Abbott and sisters Janice Nicklie and Edna Abbott, all of Juneau, Alaska, as well as sisters Janet Armer of Sitka, Alaska, and Betty Abbott of Port Angeles; and six grandchildren.

Her father preceded her in death.

Services: Tuesday, Nov. 19, at 7 p.m., memorial in Salvation Army, Second and Peabody streets, Port Angeles. Capt. Ralph Jiminez will officiate; a reception will follow. Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel, Port Angeles, was in charge of local arrangements and Pruitt's Funeral Home, Sitka, Alaska, was in charge of cremation; cremains will be spread in the spring.

Maynard B. Watson

Nov. 19, 1952 -- Oct. 23, 2002

Port Angeles-born Maynard B. Watson died in Evergreen Care Center, Enumclaw, after a lengthy illness. He was 49.

The son of Maynard B. ``Sandy" and Vestrel Helen (Simpkins) Watson, he was a lifetime resident of the Olympic Peninsula. He grew up at Neah Bay and moved to Port Angeles in 1968, where he graduated from Port Angeles High School and attended Peninsula College.

Mr. Watson worked at various janitorial jobs in Forks and Port Angeles and for Diversified Industries.

He was a Junior Deputy and a member of the Eagles.

Mr. Watson was a member of the Neah Bay Presbyterian Church and attended the Jehovah Witness Kingdom Hall in Port Angeles for 30 years.

He is survived by brother Albert Fernandez of Orting and sister Cheryl Carey of Payson, Ariz. His father died in 1976 and his mother in 1998.

Services: None. Personal Alternative, Puyallup-Tacoma, is in charge.

Gomer C. `Butch' Bland

Sept. 19, 1914 -- Oct. 27, 2002

Former Peninsula resident Gomer ``Butch" Bland died in Ellicott City, Md., from intestinal problems at age 88.

He was born in Oakville to Ora Commodore ``O.C." and Gerty (Bailey) Bland. He married Margie (Wurman) Scott in Port Angeles on April 7, 1950.

Mr. Bland lived in Everett and worked running electrical conduit in B-17s at Boeing Co., Seattle, early in World War II. He came to the shipyard in Port Angeles, where he worked with fuel and steam systems on small frigates.

Mr. Bland was an auto mechanic. From 1957 to 1959, he lived in Sequim, before relocating to Aberdeen, where he owned his own shop. In 1975, he retired and returned to Port Angeles, which remained his home until he moved to Ellicott City, Md., in 1999.

He was a member of the Seventh-day Adventist Church and a dedicated father.

Mr. Bland enjoyed flower gardening and cooking. He spent 13 years as a ``snowbird," traveling winters to Quartzite, Ariz., with his wife, who died Dec. 23, 1999.

Survivors include son and daughter-in-law Ted and Insuk Bland of Ellicott City, Md., and stepsons and stepdaughter-in-laws Gene and Gereldine Scott and Don and Teddy Scott, all of Hereford, Texas; stepdaughter and stepson-in-law Doreen and Gene Kure of Port Angeles; 18 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two brothers, four sisters and three grandchildren.

Services: Sunday, Nov. 24, memorial in Seventh-day Adventist Church, 124 W. Ninth St., Port Angeles. Daryl Trowbridge will officiate. Maryland Cremation Society and McNab Funeral Home, Cantonsville, Md., were in charge of arrangements.

Memorials: Youth charity of choice.

William Patrick `Pat' Dunbar

May 18, 1915 -- Nov. 8, 2002

Port Angeles resident William Patrick ``Pat" Dunbar died in Crestwood Convalescent Center at age 87. The tentative cause of his death was pancreatic cancer.

Born in Kamloops, British Columbia, to Clyde H. and Marjorie (Salmon) Dunbar, he came to the United States in 1935 to live with an aunt and uncle in Seattle, where he was employed as an able seaman by Foss Launch & Tug in 1937 and where, on Sept. 15, 1939, he married Nella E. Warren.

Mr. Dunbar then worked for Union Oil Co. He was transferred to Port Angeles in 1946, and was hired by Rayonier in 1948.

From 1958 to 1962, he again worked for Foss Launch & Tug, then accepted a billet as second mate on the ship Acania in the South Seas with Stanford Research Institute, Palo Alto, Calif.

In 1966, he accepted employment with Military Sea Lift Command, Department of Defense, as a second mate on Navy vessels. He retired in 1980, then spent a final three years with Foss Launch & Tug.

During his career, Mr. Dunbar traveled to every continent except Africa.

In 1995, he and his wife moved from Port Townsend to Park View Villa in Port Angeles.

In Port Townsend, Mr. Dunbar was Past Worshipful Master of the Masonic Lodge and for five years, a Rainbow Dad. In Port Angles, he was a life member of Naval Elks.

His love of nature led him to teach forestry with 4-H in his earlier years. He also enjoyed bird watching, photography and reading.

Survivors include his wife; son and daughter-in-law David and Pam Dunbar of Dallas, Texas; daughters Marjorie Myers and Penny Hordyk, both of Port Angeles; five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by son-in-law William C. ``Bill" Myers.

Services: Olympic Cremation Association, Port Angeles, was in charge of burial at sea.

Memorials: Rainbow Girls, c/o Masonic Lodge No. 6, P.O. Box 204, Port Townsend, WA 98368.

Harold Northup

Oct. 28, 1938 -- Nov. 12, 2002

Longtime Port Angeles resident Harold Northup died in Olympic Medical Center at age 64.

He was born in Woodland to Harold Reed Sr. and Della Mae (Segulin) Northup and served with the Navy from 1956 to 1959, where he was a petty officer second class fire control technician working with gun systems aboard the USS Midway.

From 1960 to 1965, Mr. Northup was employed by Boeing Co. and, from 1965-70, at Crane Creek Shingle Mills. He was owner and sawyer of Port Angeles Shake and Shingle from 1970 to 1992.

He was a published artist and poet with a broad range of interests from hunting and fishing through bowling, board and card games, to cooking, sewing and keeping an aquarium. He was also a volunteer on the Driving While Intoxicated Victims Panel.

He married Agnes Marie Prosoff in 1960 at Seattle; she died Nov. 13, 1980.

Mr. Northup's survivors include sons Jack Caulder of Port Angeles and Chad Stanislaw of Bend, Ore.; daughters Lenora Louise Haupt, Teresa Ann Doran, Christine Dolores Kahler, Lori Rolley, Jennifer Caulder, Christina Caulder, all of Port Angeles, and Tammy Tate of Bend, Ore.; brother Darryl Northup of Los Angeles; sister Jody Heffernan of Federal Way; and four grandchildren.

Services: Monday, Nov. 18, at 2 p.m., funeral in Drennan & Ford Funeral Home, 260 Monroe Road, Port Angeles. The Rev. Darryl Northup will officiate; Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1024 will participate. Private burial will be in Ocean View Cemetery, 3127 W. 18th St., Port Angeles.
