Elsie A. Turner

March 22, 1920 -- Nov. 13, 2002

Elsie A. Turner of Sequim died in Crestwood Convalescent Center, Port Angeles, at age 82.

She was born in Jansen, Saskatchewan, to Sam and Olga (Elke) Andres and came to the United States in 1945.

She lived in Miami and Bakersfield, Calif., before moving to Sequim, where she joined Dungeness Valley Lutheran Church.

Mrs. Turner is survived by son and daughter-in-law Jeff O. and Helga Turner of Johnson City, Tenn.; daughter and son-in-law Randi Jo and Bobby Cooper of Sequim; sister Helen Walker of Calgary, Alberta; and three grandchildren.

Services: Monday, Nov. 18, at 11 a.m., funeral in Dungeness Valley Lutheran Church, 925 N. Sequim Ave. The Rev. Roger Kincaid will officiate. Burial will be in Sequim View Cemetery. Sequim Valley Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials: Stephen Ministry, Dungeness Valley Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 1916, Sequim, WA 98282. Please, no flowers.

Delbert L. Allen

Nov. 9, 1924 -- Nov. 18, 2002

Delbert L. Allen of Sequim died of emphysema at age 78.

He was born in Erwin, Tenn., to Robert S. and Maude Nell (Banner) Allen.

He married Beth Marie Stoddard in Anchorage, Alaska, on April 14, 1949.

Mr. Allen worked for the Alaska Railroad and was assistant general manager when he retired in 1978.

He enjoyed fishing and golfing.

Mr. Allen is survived by his wife; son Robert and daughter Deborah Allen, both of Renton, as well as daughters Kim Stanton and Cynthia Rabe, both of Anchorage; sisters Lucille Hill of Iowa and Ruby Gordon and Glendora Allen, both of Illinois; and five grandchildren.

Services: At his request, none. Drennan & Ford Funeral Home, Port Angeles, is in charge.

William Clifford Armstrong

Dec. 15, 1928 -- Nov. 7, 2002

Former Port Angeles resident William Clifford Armstrong died in Lacey of cancer. He was age 73.

He was born in Dryad to Harry and Pony (Vermillion) Armstrong.

Mr. Armstrong served in the Navy from 1948 to 1953.

He married Barbara Ruth Allen in Port Angeles on Dec. 5, 1953.

The Armstrongs operated the Little Chef Cafe.

He received his bachelor's degree from The Evergreen State College in Olympia; master's degrees in counseling from Multnomah Bible College, Portland, Ore., and in education from Whitworth College, Spokane; and a doctorate in psychology from California Coast University, Santa Ana, Calif.

Mr. Armstrong was employed by the Washington State Utilities Commission and pastored in Deer Park. He then worked setting up family support centers throughout the United States for the Department of Defense.

Mr. Armstrong was active in Church of Living Waters, Olympia, serving as interim pastor, youth pastor, elder, deacon and Bible teacher.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years and son Patrick, both of Lacey; sons and daughters-in-law Steven and Lisa Armstrong in England and Mark and Donna Armstrong in Oregon; sister and brother-in-law Linda and Bob Mathews of Centralia; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services: Burial with full military honors was Nov. 14 in Tahoma National Cemetery, Kent.

Memorials: Charity of choice.

Carol M. Barnes

March 13, 1929 -- Nov. 15, 2002

Sequim resident Carol M. Barnes died of cardiac arrest at age 73.

She was born in Decatur, Ill., to James Delmon and Wilma Lorene (Butler) Kilgore.

She married Arthur Nicholas Barnes in St. Louis on May 9, 1952.

Mrs. Barnes earned her bachelor's degree with departmental honors in philosophy from the University of Puget Sound, Tacoma, and her master's in business administration from Northwestern University, Evanston, Ill.

While living in the Chicago area, she was international traffic manager for Baxter Laboratories.

In addition to being a member of Mensa, Mrs. Barnes was a liturgist for her church and enjoyed knitting. Her church was Trinity United Methodist in Sequim.

She is survived by her husband and sister, June Kilgore.

Services: None. Olympic Cremation Association, Port Angeles, is in charge.

Harold Hearn Butler

Sept. 20, 1920 -- Nov. 16, 2002

Harold Hearn Butler died in his Port Angeles home at age 82.

He was born in Port Angeles to Harold Hearn and Bianca Melanie (Hagenbruck) Butler, and set records for running the hurdles in track while attending Port Angeles High School.

As a member of the Coast Guard, he attended diesel school and served as a motor machinist rising to petty officer first class in duty at Beloit, Wis., New York and Astoria, Ore.

In Port Angeles, Mr. Butler was employed by Crown Zellerbach and Black Ball Freight.

He traveled extensively in Europe and the Orient and was a life member of Elks Naval Lodge, of which he served on the board for several years.

Mr. Butler is survived by his wife, the former Ethel I. Olson, whom he married May 15, 1948, in Port Angeles.

He was preceded in death by brothers Edger, Gordon and Ernest and sisters Mary E. Dailey and Vera Bower.

Services: Saturday, Nov. 23, at 2 p.m., memorial in Naval Elks Temple, 131 E. First St., Port Angeles. Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Jana Lee Payne

April 21, 1954 -- Nov. 18, 2002

Jana Lee Payne of Port Angeles died in Seattle of stomach cancer. She was 48.

She was born to John and Barbara (Morieo) Mergens on Mercer Island, where she graduated from high school in 1971. She earned her bachelor's degree in business from Washington State University.

On Sept. 8, 1979, she married Steve Payne in Port Angeles, where she was office manager for Wilder Toyota for 12 years.

Mrs. Payne enjoyed rooting for the WSU Cougars and Port Angeles High School girls basketball team.

She is survived by her husband, son Brian Payne, daughter Ashley Payne and brother John Mergens, all of Port Angeles; and her parents and brother Steve Mergens, all of Medford, Ore.

Services: Gathering of Remembrance, Friday, Nov. 22, from 1 to 3 p.m. in Downriggers Restaurant, 115 E. Railroad Ave., Port Angeles. Drennan & Ford Funeral Home was in charge of cremation.

Memorials: Port Angeles Girls Basketball, c/o Pacific Northwest Bank, 901 E. Front St., Port Angeles, WA 98362.

Andrew M. Pearson

Feb. 15, 1919 -- Nov. 17, 2002

Forks resident Andrew M. Pearson died of leukemia at age 83.

He was born in Grovesprings, Mo., to Samual Arnet and Dora (Buttram) Pearson.

During World War II, Mr. Pearson worked in the shipyards at San Francisco.

He married Yvonne T. (Personnette) Brown in Reno, Nev., on July 5, 1952.

In 1974 the Pearsons, including their two youngest sons, moved from Idaho to Sequim, then to Forks.

Mr. Pearson was employed in the logging industry in Idaho and Washington, as well as a variety of other occupations before retiring in 1981.

Survivors include sons Dale Brown of McCall, Idaho; Bill Brown of Parma, Idaho; Duane Brown of Orofino, Idaho; and Butch, Jay and Kevin Pearson, all of Forks; daughters Jackie Gravette of Drasco, Ark.; Sandy Perigen of Kuna, Idaho; Karen Alford of McCall, Idaho; Pat Frazier of Forks; Janet Rogers of Boise, Idaho; and Judy Gallagher of Port Angeles; brother Paul Pearson of Umatilla, Ore.; 39 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren.

His wife died in 1989, son Larry Brown in 1998, and great-grandson David Stewart in 1991. He also was preceded in death by sisters Annabell Ashby and Alta Henderson.

Services: Thursday, Nov. 21, at 11 a.m., memorial in Forks Baptist Church, 651 S. Forks Ave., Forks. Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel, Port Angeles, is in charge of arrangements.

Bob Rooney

May 30, 1922 -- Nov. 17, 2002

Lifelong Port Angeles resident Bob Rooney died at age 80 from complications of diabetes and emphysema.

He was the son of Lyman E. and Ada McKinley (Harrington) Rooney.

Bob married Joyce E. Stephens on Dec. 4, 1946, in Port Angeles.

Mr. Rooney served in the Army during World War II, from 1942 to 1945 with duty in Normandy, northern France and Holland, including the Battle of the Bulge. He served from 1947 to 1949 as an 82nd Airborne 508 paratrooper.

He received the Purple Heart, two Bronze Stars including one for valor, European Theater ribbon, French Fratague, Belgium Fratague, and Dutch Lanyard.

On the Peninsula, Mr. Rooney was a logger and the last member of the Clallam Bounty Sheriff's Department Posse with the rank of lieutenant.

He was a life member of Disabled American Veterans.

Survivors include his wife and sons James Michael Rooney and Chester Lyman Rooney, all of Port Angeles; son Robert Elton Rooney of Fairbanks, Alaska; brother Harry Rooney of Montana; sisters Bonnie Rogers of Port Angeles, Dawn Stanard of Bremerton and Sheery Rooney of Port Hadlock; 13 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by brothers Elton and Tom ``Bill'' Rooney, and sisters Delores Laird and Barbara Cochran.

Services: Friday, Nov. 22, from 10 a.m. to noon, visitation in Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel, 105 W. Fourth St., Port Angeles; Friday, Nov. 22 at 2 p.m., graveside service in Mount Angeles Memorial Park, U.S. Highway 101 and Monroe Road, followed by a reception at Sons of Norway, Scandia Hall, 131 W. Fifth St., Port Angeles.

Memorials: Disabled American Veterans, Chapter No. 9, 915 Second Ave., Room 1058, Seattle, WA 98174.

Lorraine Katherine Case

Jan. 11, 1930 -- Nov. 19, 2002

Lorraine Katherine Case died in Port Townsend from complications of multiple sclerosis. She was 72.

Born in Artas, S.D., to Emil and Elizabeth (Orth) Trautmann, she grew up on North Dakota farms near Artas, Herried, Forbes and Ellendale.

She married Melvin E. Case on April 26, 1955.

Immediately after they married, the couple moved to Port Townsend, where she lived for the rest of her life, and where she was an active member of the Baptist Church.

Mrs. Case was a full-time homemaker who enjoyed sewing and embroidery as well as playing the piano and reading.

She is survived by her husband; son and daughter-in-law Kevin and Tracie Case of Oak Harbor; daughter Lisa Cloward of Port Townsend; daughter and son-in-law Lori and Stacey Wickett of Shelton; brothers Herman, Ted, Marvin, Alfred, Art and Lloyd Trautmann; sisters Irene Biesheuvel, Lillian Wagner and Alta Aman; and six grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by brothers Emmanuel and Bob, sister Betty and grandson Adam Cloward.

Services: Sunday, Nov. 24, at 3 p.m., memorial in First Baptist Church, Lawrence and Filmore streets, Port Townsend. Pastor Skip Cadorette will officiate. A time of fellowship will follow the service. At a later time, graveside committal will be in Laurel Grove Cemetery, Port Townsend. Kosec Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Jeffery Lynn Deem

May 1, 1957 -- Nov. 19, 2002

Jeffery Lynn Deem died of cancer in his Port Angeles home at age 45.

He was born in Brigham City, Utah, to Laren Justin and Sharon (Olsen) Deem.

He attended the Oregon Institute of Technology.

He married Ruth Bennington in St. James Church at Friern Barnet, London, England, on March 17, 1979.

Mr. Deem served in the U.S. Coast Guard from February 1975 through June 1998, retiring as a master chief electronics technician. His worldwide travels on active duty included Cape May; Estartit, Spain; Kure Island; Sylt, Germany; Astoria, Ore.; Coast Guard headquarters in London; and Petaluma, Calif.

Following retirement, Mr. Deem worked in telecommunications in Petaluma from September 1998 until October 2001.

He lived in Port Angeles during the past year. He was a member of Calvary Chapel in Sequim.

Mr. Deem was involved with many service organizations, including Boy Scouts of America and Gideon's International. He enjoyed hiking, diving, travel and wooden boats.

Survivors include his wife, son Nicholas Scott Deem and daughter Natalie Jean Deem of Port Angeles; father of Bicknell, Utah, and mother of Magna, Utah; brothers Mike Deem of Taylorsville, Utah, Bryan Deem of Salt Lake City, Cory Burris of Magna, Utah, and William Outland of Phoenix; sister Susan Betts of Bullhead City, Ariz.; and paternal grandmother Charlene Rees of Roy, Utah.

Services: Friday, Nov. 22, at 1 p.m., memorial in Calvary Chapel, 261913 Highway 101, Sequim. The Rev. Hans Bailey will officiate. Drennan & Ford Funeral Home, Port Angeles, is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials: Hospice of Clallam County, P.O. Box 2014, Port Angeles, WA 98362.
