Vivien Grace `Gay' Gerke

Nov. 26, 1909 -- Nov. 15, 2002

Vivien Grace ``Gay" Gerke of Port Townsend died in Virginia Mason Hospital, Seattle, at age 92.

Born in Dewey, Okla., to Herbert Nobel and Wilma Clare (Goodwin) Youtsey, she grew up in Oklahoma and central California.

Mrs. Gerke worked as a cafeteria manager in public schools until she retired, after which she lived in Mexico, California and Western Washington, often volunteering in rest homes and senior programs.

She was a member of Church of Christ.

She loved to read, particularly history, religious and art books. She also enjoyed raising flowers -- especially violets and orchids -- and cooking.

Her marriage to David Robert Gerke ended in divorce.

Survivors include son Charles Robert ``Birch" Gerke of Port Townsend; daughter Nola Jane Goodall of Placerville, Calif.; three grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Services: Saturday, Dec. 7, at 1 p.m., service in Church of Christ, Cherry and A streets, Port Townsend. Carl Hansen will officiate. Kosec Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ronald Thomas `Buddy' Lindh

Sept. 16, 1959 -- Nov. 17, 2002

Sequim resident Ronald Thomas ``Buddy" Lindh died of pancreatitis at age 43.

He was born in Seattle to Ronald B. and Rose Mary (Devereaux) Lindh and graduated with honors from Sequim High School.

He lived in Sequim for the past 37 years, working as an electrician, handyman and remodeling consultant.

Mr. Lindh is survived by his brother, Marvin of Glenoma; sisters Carolyn Williams of Ethel, Gloria White of Maple Valley and Lois Sickles of Vancouver, Wash.

Services: Monday, Nov. 25, at noon, graveside committal in Sequim View Cemetery with the Rev. Thomas Beattie presiding. A reception will follow in St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 121 E. Maple St., Sequim. Drennan & Ford Funeral Home, Port Angeles, is in charge of arrangements.

Marian Nicholson Luedicke

Oct. 9, 1919 -- Nov. 20, 2002

Sequim resident Marian Nicholson Luedicke died in Olympic Care and Rehabilitation Center at age 83.

She was born in Milwaukee, Wis., to Joseph W. and Ruth (Morgan) Nicholson.

She attended Northwestern University.

During World War II, she was a stenographer under J. Edgar Hoover at the FBI.

When she married Lynn Surles, they moved to Texas. After divorcing, she became an executive secretary at Astonautics Corp. of America and then with First Wisconsin Trust Co.

In August 1976, she married Alex Luedicke and moved to Bainbridge Island. Following his retirement, they relocated to Sequim in 1990.

Mrs. Luedicke was a member of Beta Chapter of Alpha Phi Fraternity, St. Luke's Episcopal Church, Daughters of the King and Sequim Senior Center.

She is survived by her husband; son Mark Surles of Bonny Doon, Calif.; and daughter Laurie Benoon of La Quinta, Calif.

Services: Monday, Nov. 25, at noon, graveside service in Kane Cemetery, Bainbridge Island. The Rev. Robert Rhoads will officiate. Sequim Valley Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials: Humane Society of choice.

Helen Marzullo

May 16, 1922 -- Nov. 17, 2002

Port Angeles resident Helen Marzullo died of cancer in her son's home in SeaTac. She was 80.

She was born in Laurel, Mont., to Henry and Elizabeth (Krum) Ostwald.

She moved to Seattle and made blueprints for the Boeing Co. during World War II.

After the war, she began lifelong work as a retail clerk and bookkeeper for A&P grocers and Ernst Hardware in Seattle. In 2001, she moved to Port Angeles.

Her husband, Joseph Marzullo, died in 1995.

Mrs. Marzullo is survived by son and daughter-in-law Thomas and Patti Marzullo of Port Angeles; son David Marzullo and his friend, Tom Reed, both of Seattle; and two grandchildren.

Services: None. Inurnment will be in Evergreen-Washelli Memorial Park, Seattle. Drennan & Ford Funeral Home, Port Angeles, is in charge of arrangements.

William MacLean

Campbell III

May 1, 1923 -- Nov. 22, 2002

William MacLean Campbell III died in Port Townsend of heart failure. He was 79.

Born in Worchester, Mass., to William MacLean and Clara P. (Simmler) Campbell II, he was raised mostly in California.

During World War II, he served in the Navy in the South Pacific from 1942 to 1946.

He married Marian Helen Walls in Ventura, Calif., on May 17, 1946. She died June 25, 2000.

Mr. Campbell settled in Michigan to raise his family. After retirement in 1985, he and his wife traveled throughout the United States with their fifth-wheel trailer before making their home in Port Townsend in 1992.

He enjoyed dancing, and was a member of the Port Townsend-Jefferson County Senior Association. He was also active in sports and outdoor activities.

Mr. Campbell is survived by son William MacLean Campbell IV of Port Townsend; daughters Jo Ann Campbell of Sardis, Miss., and Susan Kay Campbell of Traverse City, Mich.; brother Mac Campbell of Umpqua, Ore., as well as brothers Greg Campbell and Loren Campbell and sister Bonnie Massengill, all of Long Beach, Calif.

He is also survived by five grandchildren.

Services: Tuesday, Nov. 26, 4-6 p.m., memorial gathering in the Port Townsend Community Center, 620 Tyler St. Kosec Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

William E. Moulton

Sept 12, 1946 -- Nov. 21, 2002

Port Angeles resident William E. Moulton died at age 56.

He was born in Medford, Ore., to Alison and Mary Elizabeth (Dunn) Moulton.

From 1966 to 1997, he was a journeyman electrician for ITT Rayonier.

He married Ann Marie Pazan in Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, Port Angeles, on Feb. 8, 1986.

Mr. Moulton enjoyed hunting fishing, hiking, tennis and basketball. He played basketball for Peninsula College in 1964-66.

He is survived by his wife, daughter Angela Rockwell of Lynnwood, sister Teresa Moulton of Sequim, and three grandchildren.

Services: Today, Nov. 24, a private reception will be held. Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel, Port Angeles, is in charge of arrangements.

Donald Niven Wheeler

Oct. 23, 1913 -- Nov. 8, 2002

Former Sequim farmer Donald Niven Wheeler of Bainbridge Island died in Virginia Mason Medical Center, Seattle, of a heart attack. He was 89.

He was born in White Bluffs, the fifth child of stonemason and orchardist Francis Marion and teacher Jeanie Melissa (Shaw) Wheeler.

He graduated from Queen Anne High School in Seattle.

He traveled by rowboat down the Columbia River and over the rapids to his first year of post-graduate study, Reed College in Portland, Ore.

After graduating from Reed, Wheeler attended Oxford in London as a Rhodes Scholar. He studied politics, philosophy and economics for two years, graduating with first-class honors.

He then studied for a third year in the University of Paris, during which time he worked for the International Brigades Office, expediting the return of veterans from the war in Spain.

Returning to the United States in 1938, he married Mary Margaret Lukes on July 27 in Vancouver, Wash.

Following one year teaching at Yale University, he spent almost a decade in government work at Washington, D.C., including five years as a section chief in the Office of Strategic Services.

In 1947, the family returned to Washington state and bought a dairy farm in Sequim. He and his wife operated the farm for 18 years.

In 1965, Dr. Wheeler joined the faculty at Franconia College in New Hampshire. In 1968, he returned to Oxford, where he researched the scale of agricultural enterprises under a socialist economy and received his doctorate.

Brandon University, Manitoba, hired Dr. Wheeler in 1970 to teach economics. He retired in 1980 as professor emeritus and moved to Bainbridge Island, where he and his wife continued to lead an active life.

Dr. Wheeler's survivors include sons Stephen Vause of Sequim and Timothy Wheeler of Baltimore, Md.; daughters Susan Wheeler of Portland, Ore., and Marion Burns of Sequim; sister Marian Coleman of Bainbridge Island and Helen Hastay of Grapeview; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

His wife of 54 years died Nov. 15, 1992. He was also preceded in death by son Nathaniel Robinson Wheeler.

Services: Saturday, Aug. 2, 2003, at 1 p.m., a Celebration of Life will be held at the family farmhouse, 12 Honeybee Lane. Bleitz Funeral Home, Seattle, is in charge.

Beryl Yaklich

Sept. 16, 1912 -- Nov. 21, 2002

Former Peninsula resident Beryl Yaklich of Issaquah died in Bellevue of a stroke. She was 90.

She was born to Albert and Nellie (Hopkins) Birch in Great Falls, Mont.

Following her marriage to Vernon Yaklich on Jan. 10, 1936, in St. James Cathedral, Seattle, she was a homemaker in Seattle, Woodinville, Port Townsend and Sequim.

Mrs. Yaklich loved animals, especially cats. She did volunteer work at museums in Sequim and Port Townsend. She loved gardening and won prizes at the Jefferson County Fair for her vegetables.

She also played the organ and built a power boat, using it often on Puget Sound.

Mrs. Yaklich was a member of Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Sammamish and St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Sequim.

In both Woodinville and Sequim, she belonged to Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary. Additionally, she was a member of Eagles in Sequim, Coast Guard Auxiliary in Port Townsend and U.S. Power Squadron in Everett.

She is survived by son Tony Yaklich of Olympia, daughter and son-in-law Mary and Ron Long of Sammamish, and four grandchildren.

Services: Monday, Nov. 25 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., visitation in Sequim Valley Chapel, 108 W. Alder St., followed at 7 p.m. by vigil at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 121 E. Maple St., Sequim; Tuesday, Nov. 26, at 1:30 p.m., funeral in St. Joseph's with the Rev. Thomas W. Beattie presiding. Burial, following the service, will be in Port Townsend.

Friday, Nov. 29, at 7 p.m., there will also be a memorial Mass at Mary Queen of Peace Church in Sammamish.

Memorials: Memory Garden, Mary Queen of Peace Catholic Church, 1121 228th Ave. S.E., Sammamish, WA 98075.

CATHERINE FAY MAXHIMER

``Kay" passed away Sunday, November 17, 2002, at her home of natural causes.

Catherine Fay Keith was born June 17, 1923, in Robbinsdale, Minnesota, to Edwin Otis Keith and Anna Dorothy Weiseler. She was one of six children.

She met Delbert Earl Maxhimer in 1944 in San Diego, California, where he was stationed in the Navy. They were married December 24, 1945. They lived in Massillon, Ohio until 1963, when they moved their family to Port Angeles.

Kay, also known affectionately as ``Pudge" to her husband and friends, committed her life to being a full-time wife and mother. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her.

She is survived by her husband of 57 years, Delbert, six children, Karen Spink of Richfield, Minnesota, Randall (Patty), Bradley (Judy), Debby, Rex (Jody), Connie (Sam) all of Port Angeles, six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. She is also survived by her youngest brother Milt (Annie) of Wyandotte, Michigan.

Contributions may be made to Hospice and the Salvation Army Food Bank.

Eldrige L. `Rige' Waldron

June 15, 1920 -- Nov. 22, 2002

Former Port Angeles resident Eldrige L. ``Rige" Waldron died at St. Joseph's Hospital in Tacoma at the age of 82.

He was born in LaPorte, Minn., to John E. and Ruby Odessa (Mead) Waldron.

Mr. Waldron was raised in Port Angeles, and as a teenager joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and worked the logging camps in Clallam County. When he was not working he was lead guitarist for the Olympic Peninsula Wranglers, a small country and western band that performed around the area.

In September 1938, he joined the Marine Corps and was assigned to Company A Marine Barracks, Naval Shipyard, Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, as a military policeman. He was also a code runner with Naval intelligence at Pearl Harbor and was responsible for escorting intercepted Japanese codes to a secure area where they were being decoded prior to the infamous Dec. 7, 1941, attack.

He was stationed at the main gate as an MP during the attack and was credited with the downing of two Japanese aircraft during the Dec. 7 attack.

Mr. Waldron was honorably discharged as a gunnery sergeant in September 1945, as a result of wounds received in the battle of Tarawa. He was awarded the Purple Heart.

After serving in Pearl Harbor, he returned briefly to Port Angeles, began dating his childhood sweetheart, Trudy Kreher, and married her 10 days after their first date, on Oct. 7, 1942, in Yuma, Ariz.

After discharge from the Marines, the couple returned briefly to Port Angeles where Mr. Waldron worked as a Washington State Patrol officer and a Port Angeles police officer.

He then joined the Army serving as a Criminal Investigation Division agent with tours of duty in Japan, Korea, Arkansas, Fort Worden and eventually retiring at Fort Lewis as a Chief Warrant Officer II in 1961.

After leaving the Army, he worked in civilian law enforcement with the Burlington Northern Railroad as the regional vice president of security, retiring in 1984, after 20 years of service. He also spent seven years as a reserve detective for the Steilacoom Police Department from 1984 to 1991, resigning at the age of 71.

He was a member of Pearl Harbor Survivors, Retired Officers Association, Marine Corps Association and Sheriff & Police Chiefs Association.

Mr. Waldron enjoyed music, collecting cameras and taking pictures. He loved fishing on the Elwha and Michelle rivers, visiting pawn shops and taking long road trips. He had a special love for Port Angeles and always looked forward to returning for family picnics.

Survivors include his wife of 60 years and son John ``J.J." Waldron, both of University Place; daughters and sons-in-law Joanne ``Jody" and Lyle Barker of Toledo, and Dianne ``Dinny" and Al Kresse of Tacoma; brother and sister-in-law Don C. and Phanoy Waldron of Port Angeles; two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services: Wednesday, Nov. 27, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. visitation at Drennan-Ford Funeral Home, 260 Monroe Road, Port Angeles, followed immediately by the funeral service at 1 p.m., also at Drennan-Ford. Burial, with full Marine color guard honors, will follow the service at Ocean View Cemetery, 3127 W. 18th St., Port Angeles.
