Evelyn F. Thomas

April 25, 1919 -- Nov. 23, 2002

Evelyn F. Thomas died from pneumonia at Olympic Memorial Hospital in Port Angeles at the age of 83.

Mrs. Thomas was born in Ballard to Thomas F. and Clara (Berg) Foss. She married Donald W. Thomas on March 28, 1941, in Port Angeles.

Mrs. Thomas graduated from Forks High School and attended the University of Washington. She was a graduate of the first husband/wife Civil Aeronautics Administration Communications class in Alaska in 1942. She worked as an air traffic communications specialist in many communities throughout Alaska, prior to her husband's retirement in 1970, when they moved to Port Angeles.

Mrs. Thomas was an excellent cook, an innovative holiday and special event planner and enjoyed playing bridge and crossword puzzles.

Survivors include her husband of Port Angeles; sons Richard W. Thomas and his wife, Linda, of Kirkland, and James E. Thomas and his wife, Debbie, of Anchorage, Alaska; daughter Arlee R. Cada and her husband, George, of Anchorage, Alaska; brother Thomas Michael Foss; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Services: None. Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Esther Helen Thompson

May 18, 1916 -- Nov. 24, 2002

Esther Helen Thompson died in Port Angeles from cancer at the age of 86.

Mrs. Thompson was born to J. Ragnar and Thora Marie (Lindgaard) Sholund in Duluth, Minn. She married Carlton I. Thompson in May 1934, in Duluth, Minn. He died in 1986.

Mrs. Thompson moved to Oakland, Calif., in 1942, and to Port Angeles in 1948.

Mrs. Thompson was a seamstress for various drapery and clothing businesses. She had a lifelong interest in needle arts, crocheting and quilting; she was a gourmet cook.

Mrs. Thompson was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Duluth, Eagles of Port Angeles, and Sons of Norway.

Survivors include son Bruce G. Thompson; two grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by brother George L. Aar.

Services: Graveside service at 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 7, 2002, at Drennan & Ford Funeral Home, 260 Monroe Road, Port Angeles, with open house following at 511 W. 15th St., Port Angeles.

Memorials: Hospice, 540 E. Eighth St., Port Angeles, WA 98362.

Edward Murray `Gus' Bennett

May 29, 1914 -- Nov. 27, 2002

Edward Murray ``Gus" Bennett of Port Angeles died from congestive heart disease at age 88.

He was born to Harrison Murray and Mary (Gould) Bennett in the town of Opportunity.

Mr. Bennett served in the Army from 1942 to 1946, during World War II.

His wife, the former Barbara Bamford, whom he married May 19, 1945, in Missoula, Mont., preceded him in death in 1996.

In Port Angeles, Mr. Bennett was employed at Fiberboard from 1935 to 1951. He managed Ulin Maintenance and Supply until 1966, and then was hardware buyer for Swain's General Store until 1979.

For 53 years, he made his home at Eighth and Washington streets in Port Angeles, where he loved to garden. He also enjoyed sports.

Mr. Bennett was a member of the Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include sons Steve Bennett of Port Angeles and Scott Bennett of Kennewick; 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by sisters Margaret Hanchett, Dorothea Smith and Eleanor Priest.

Services: Saturday, Dec. 7, at 11 a.m., funeral in First Presbyterian Church, 139 W. Eighth St., Port Angeles, with the Rev. Ted Mattie officiating. Burial will be in Mount Angeles Memorial Park, Port Angeles. Drennan & Ford Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Geneva M. Dobson

Dec. 28, 1910 -- Nov. 27, 2002

Port Townsend resident Geneva M. Dobson died of a stroke at age 91.

She was born to Ernest and Lillian (Martin) Hinkley in Benton, Wis.

After marrying Keith Dobson, who served with the Army, she accompanied him to duty stations in Texas, California and Port Townsend.

She enjoyed making wedding cakes, and was an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary and Trinity United Methodist Church.

Mrs. Dobson is survived by daughter and son-in-law Sharon and Ralph Canfield, and brother and sister-in-law Otis and Alice Hinkley, all of Port Townsend; two grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services: Thursday, Dec. 5, at 1 p.m., graveside service in Laurel Grove Cemetery on Discovery Road, Port Townsend, with Wendell Ankeny officiating. Kosec Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials: Trinity United Methodist Church, 609 Taylor St., Port Townsend, WA 98368; or American Legion Auxiliary, 209 Monroe St., Port Townsend, WA 98368.

Marjorie L. Griffith

Jan. 31, 1914 -- Dec. 2, 2002

Marjorie L. Griffith of Chimacum died in Sequim of heart failure. She was 88.

She was born on a homestead south of Wolf Point, Mont., to Samuel Z. and Bessie (Beem) Thomas.

She married Frank Griffith in Glasgow, Mont., on Feb. 9, 1938. They divorced in 1948.

Mrs. Griffith and her son graduated together from Eastern Montana College, where she earned a bachelor's degree in education before becoming a grade-school teacher in Montana for 25 years. She retired in 1973.

Mrs. Griffith had a passion for making baby quilts, completing more than 100 for family and friends. She enjoyed painting, and was a life member of Eastern Star.

Mrs. Griffith moved to Chimacum, where she cared for her mother and her brother until their deaths. She spent her final two months at Dungeness Courte in Sequim.

Survivors include son and daughter-in-law Stewart and Karen Griffith of Idaho Falls, Idaho; daughter and son-in-law Janet and Jim Greer of Chimacum; brothers Dick Thomas of Port Hadlock and Dean Thomas of Montoursville, Pa.; sister Armyda Van Ness of Chimacum; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by seven siblings.

Services: Saturday, Dec. 7, at 11 a.m., graveside service in Greenwood Cemetery, state Highway 19, Chimacum. The Rev. Judith Claire, Mrs. Griffith's niece of San Marcos, Calif., will officiate. Kosec Funeral Home, Port Townsend, is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials: Dungeness Courte, 551 Garry Oak Drive, Sequim, WA 98382.

Warin K. Macomber

June 20, 1935 -- Nov. 30, 2002

Port Angeles resident Warin K. Macomber died in Seattle at age 67.

He was born to Laurel and Florence (Pedersen) Macomber in Tacoma.

Mr. Macomber served in the Navy during the Korean War.

He was an automatic fire protection sprinkler fitter who retired in 1990 after 33 years of service.

Mr. Macomber lived in Puyallup and Fircrest before moving to Port Angeles in 1996.

He was a member of the Fire Protection Sprinkler Fitters Union in Seattle.

He belonged to Dungeness Valley Lutheran Church in Sequim.

Mr. Macomber is survived by his wife of 47 years, the former Harriet Jensen; daughters and sons-in-law Yvonne and Robert Harris of Kent and Cindi and Robert Kjellesvik of Sumner; sister and brother-in-law Julie and William Strand of Grayland; five children and one great-granddaughter.

He was preceded in death by daughter Lori Macomber.

Services: Thursday, Dec. 5, at 1 p.m., graveside service in Woodbine Cemetery, 702 21st Ave. SW, Puyallup; Saturday, Dec. 7, at 1 p.m., memorial in Dungeness Valley Lutheran Church, 925 N. Sequim Ave., Sequim, with the Rev. Roger Kincaid officiating. Hill Funeral Home, Puyallup, is in charge of arrangements.

Judi Armstrong

June 5, 1945 -- Nov. 28, 2002

Judi Armstrong died in her Port Angeles home after a 7½-year bout with cancer. She was 57.

Mrs. Armstrong was born in Ellendale, N.D., to Edwin Leo and Rosella Weltha (Holmes) Gerdon.

She was a 15-year employee of the Department of Corrections at Clallam Bay and Monroe prisons.

Her marriages to Donald Piele and Robert Armstrong ended in divorce.

She is survived by sons Kevin Armstrong of Port Angeles and Jason Armstrong of Corona, Calif.; daughter Kelley Gagnon of Joyce; her mother of Sequim; two brothers; one sister; and five grandchildren.

Services: Saturday, Dec. 7, at 11 a.m., memorial in Drennan & Ford Funeral Home, 260 Monroe Road, Port Angeles. The Rev. Joel Richardson of Joyce Bible Church will officiate.

Hazel L. Huffman

April 30, 1904 -- Dec. 1, 2002

Former Agnew resident Hazel L. Huffman died in Central Point, Ore., at age 98.

She was born in Spirit Falls, Wis., to Rastus and Emily May (Cardel) Barden.

She married Owen Huffman in St. Maries, Idaho, on May 27, 1920.

In 1944, the Huffmans moved to Agnew, where they were dairy farmers, before moving to Rogue Valley, Ore., in 1966.

While in Agnew, she managed bingo games for the Helpful Neighbors Club. She also enjoyed fishing and hunting.

Survivors include son Howard L. Huffman of Central Point, Ore.; daughters Peggy Huffman and Dawn Hulse, both of Medford, Ore., and Judy Jackson of Eagle Point, Ore.; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Her husband died in 1960.

Services: Thursday, Dec. 5, at 2 p.m., graveside service in Mount Angeles Memorial Park, U.S. Highway 101 and Monroe Road, Port Angeles. Pastor Earl Anderson will officiate. Rogue Valley Funeral Alternatives, Medford, Ore., is in charge.

Vera M. Kantola

March 22, 1915 -- Nov. 27, 2002

Vera M. Kantola died in her Sequim residence at age 87. Cause of death is pending.

She was born in Kattawa, Ky., to Elbert and Georgianna (Scott) Woodall.

She was a longtime resident of Waukegan, Ill., where she worked in clothing sales. She was also a factory worker in North Chicago, Ill.

She also resided in Georgia before coming to Washington state.

Following earlier marriages to Neils P. Lunn in 1935 and Charles Petkus in 1960, from whom she was widowed, she wed Fred Kantola in 1981. He died in 1989.

Her favorite pastimes included traveling, gardening and being with her family.

Mrs. Kantola's survivors include sons David A. Lunn and Guy O. Lund, both of Port Angeles; daughter Laura Lee Herrington of Alabama; brother Preston Woodall of Seattle; sister Eva Woodall of Florida; 10 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by brother Sam Cliff Woodall and sister Edith Schotanus.

Services: Friday, Dec. 6, 1-5 p.m., and Saturday, Dec. 7, 8:30-10 a.m., visitation in Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel, 105 W. Fourth St., Port Angeles. On Saturday at 10 a.m., Celebration of Life. Burial will be in Mount Angeles Memorial Park, U.S. Highway 101 and Monroe Road, Port Angeles.

Margaret M. Kerr

Aug. 4, 1929 -- Nov. 28, 2002

Port Angeles-born Margaret M. Kerr died in Puyallup of heart failure. She was 73.

The daughter of Sigfred and Margaret Pearl (Boden) Dahl, she completed her schooling in Port Angeles, and was a meat wrapper for Safeway Stores and Johnnies markets and a member of United Food and Commercial Workers union.

Mrs. Kerr is survived by her husband, John; sons Gary Vinzant of Montana, Cale Vinzant of California and David Vinzant of Tacoma; daughters Berdean Winston of Yelm, Teresa of Seattle and Margaret Wilkinson of Port Angeles; brother Harold Dahl of Port Angeles; sister Ruby Jones of Panama City Beach, Fla.; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by brother Fred Dahl and sister Beverly Sorenson.

Services: Tuesday, Dec. 3, funeral in Sumner Assembly of God Church with the Revs. David Vinzant and Rollie Simmons officiating. Burial was in Tahoma National Cemetery, Kent. Powers Funeral Home, Sumner, was in charge of arrangements.

Jeanette J. Thornhill

Jan. 12, 1924 -- Nov. 28, 2002

Former Port Hadlock resident Jeanette J. Thornhill died in Seattle after struggling with throat cancer. She was 78.

The daughter of George and Florence (Gaspard-Guillory) Barbin, she was born in Marksville, La.

She taught carburetor assembly for the Ford Motor Co. as well as volunteering for the USO during World War II.

At a 1944 USO dance in Louisiana, she met Sam Thornhill, who was on leave from the Navy. They met again in Utah in 1950 and married in 1951.

In 1986, the Thornhills retired to Port Hadlock, where she began oil painting as a hobby. She also loved to go dancing.

Her husband died 1991, and in 1999 she relocated to Seattle to live with her daughter and son-in-law, Dawn Thornhill-Schoning and Craig Schoning.

Other survivors include a son, Lee Thornhill, also of Seattle; sister Narcille Bonnette of Marksville, La.; and two granddaughters.

Services: Friday, Dec. 6, at 11 a.m., memorial services in Northminster Presbyterian Church, 7706 25th Ave. N.W., Seattle; Friday, Dec. 13, at 3 p.m., for her friends, an informal gathering with soup and pie provided at the Veterans of Foreign Wars, 31 Matherson, Port Hadlock. Evergreen-Washelli Funeral Home, Seattle, is in charge of arrangements.
