Margaret Marie `Peggy' Wilson

Oct. 3, 1916 -- April 5, 2003

Margaret Marie ``Peggy" Wilson died of natural causes in Port Angeles. She was 86.

She was born in Nogales, Ariz., to William and Janet (Wrotnowski) Griffith.

She spent her first few years with her mother on a tropical island off San Blas, Mexico, while her father, an engineer, was a consultant to the Mexican government on the restoration of cathedrals and government buildings. He vanished after the Mexican revolution.

After contracting -- and surviving -- polio under the care of her physician-uncle in Tucson, Ariz., Mrs. Wilson moved with her mother to Inglewood, Calif., where she graduated from high school in 1934.

She attended the University of California, Riverside, and began a career with Los Angeles County government -- first in the library system in 1936 and working up to retirement as an assistant to the county chief administrative officer in 1972.

She married Jay Wilson in Inglewood in 1947, and they moved to El Monte, Calif., in 1948. They retired to Carlsbad, Calif., in 1976. Mr. Wilson died in 1986.

After traveling in the Americas, Europe and Egypt, Mrs. Wilson moved to Eureka, Calif., in 1997, then to Golden Years Care Home in Port Angeles in 1999.

She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Rex and Maria Olga Wilson, and a step-grandchild.

Services: At her request, none. Cremation arranged by Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel, Port Angeles.

Hawthorne Price Bigler

June 24, 1905 -- April 7, 2003

Hawthorne Price Bigler of Port Angeles died of heart failure at age 97.

She was born in Weymouth, Mass., to Clarence and Eva (Walsh) Price.

She married Montell Bigler, who preceded her in death.

Mrs. Bigler worked for the Christian Science Monitor in Boston, and for the Ringling Mansion in Sarasota, Fla.

A classical pianist, she was a member of the Port Angeles Music Club and learned to play the recorder in later life. She also enjoyed reading.

Survivors include son Richard B. Summers of Cape Coral, Fla.; sisters Edith Enaus and Arlene Pray of Massachusetts, and many grandchildren.

A son, Robert Summers, preceded her in death.

Services: None. Sequim Valley Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Frieda Dorothea Emilia Lange Higgerson

Nov. 6, 1912 -- March 25, 2003

Frieda Dorothea Emilia Lange Higgerson of Port Angeles died at Olympic Medical Center of complications following a stroke. She was 90.

She was born in Bellingham to William Theodor and Mary (Erchinger) Lange.

She married Birney Howard Higgerson, and the couple moved to Port Angeles in the 1940s. Together they built Birney's Drive (later Birney's Restaurant), and they continued to operate it together through its many transitions until his death in 1969.

Mrs. Higgerson continued in the business until 1979, part of the time in partnership with her son, Greg.

In 1979, she opened the Photo Processing Lab at Front and Race streets in Port Angeles, and she later expanded satellite facilities in Port Townsend and Sequim.

She ran the business until it was sold in 1983, after which she returned to Birney's Restaurant, where she oversaw the food service and hosted until the restaurant closed in 1996.

Mrs. Higgerson was a longtime member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church; a life member (57 years) of the Esther Chapter, Order of Eastern Star; a life member of the Daughters of the Nile, Hatasu Temple No. 1 of Seattle, Tirzah Club; a life member of the Order of the Amaranth, Southern Hood Canal Chapter, Shelton; a life member of Soroptimist International of Port Angeles; a charter member of the Naval Emblem Club; and an honorary life member of Birney's Broads, a group of women friends and employees of Birney's Restaurant.

She also was an avid sports fan who enjoyed following the Seattle Seahawks and Seattle Mariners, unlimited hydroplane racing, golf, ice skating and dancing.

She enjoyed gardening and was responsible for growing all of the flowers decorating the dining room windows at her restaurant.

Survivors include her son, Gregory A. Higgerson; daughters-in-law Renate Higgerson and Serena Michele Rodriguez; and three grandchildren.

Her son, Garren Birney Higgerson, died Feb. 28, 2000.

Services: Saturday, April 12, 2 p.m., memorial service at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 301 Lopez Ave. Graveside service at 4 p.m. at Mount Angeles Memorial Park, U.S. Highway 101 and Monroe Road, with the Rev. Charles Mays officiating. A reception follows at the church. Arrangements are by Drennan-Ford Funeral Home.

Dellivenna Louderback

April 23, 1920 -- April 6, 2003

Dellivenna ``Della" Louderback of Port Angeles died at Olympic Memorial Hospital of heart failure at age 82.

She was born in Lusk, Wyo., to Edwin Thomas and Vivian Courtny (Auer) Brott.

She married Robert Louderback in 1954, in Walla Walla. He died in 1980.

The Louderbacks lived in Neah Bay for several years before moving to Port Angeles in the 1970s. Mrs. Louderback cooked at the Senior Center and at local schools.

She was a member of the Presbyterian Church and of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees.

Survivors include son and daughter-in-law Delbert and Patty Fair of Kansas City, Mo.; daughters Ruby McKinzie of Congress, Ariz., and Wanda Louise Murray-Fair of Indian Springs, Nev.; sisters Nina Sternhagen of Blanchard, Idaho, and Bonnie Aldridge of Montana; six grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

A son, Paul Louderback, preceded her in death.

Services: Friday, April 11, 1 p.m., Celebration of Life at First Presbyterian Church, 139 W. Eighth St., Port Angeles, with the Rev. Ted Mattie officiating. Burial in Ocean View Cemetery. Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Marilyn Frances Black McDaniels

July 3, 1936 -- April 6, 2003

Marilyn Frances Black McDaniels of Sequim died at age 66.

Survivors include her husband, David McDaniels, whom she married in 1978; and two sons, Ronald and Randy Cook, both East Coast residents.

Services: At a later date. Cremation by Bonney-Watson Mortuary, Seattle.

Betty Anne White

May 1, 1933 -- April 5, 2003

Betty Anne White of Sekiu died of cancer at age 69.

She was born in Detroit to Cornelia Burden.

She married Jerry White in Oak Creek, Colo., on June 22, 1972.

After living in Orange County, Calif., where she worked at a pool and spa store for eight years, the Whites moved 13 years ago to Sekiu, where they owned and operated the Spring Tavern.

Mrs. White was a member of the Secret Pals Ladies Luncheon group and the Lions Club of Sekiu/Clallam Bay. She enjoyed music, crafts, gardening and shopping for antiques.

Survivors include her husband, in Sekiu; a son, Dale Westenhaver of Clallam Bay; a daughter, Janette Westenhaver-Stewart of Sekiu; three grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.

Services: Friday, April 11, at 2 p.m., memorial at Clallam Bay Presbyterian Church, officiated by Pastor Dan Ketchum and the Rev. Dave Weddington. Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials: Forks Hospice, P.O. Box 2004, Forks, WA 98331.

Jerry Boyd Frye

Feb. 2, 1944 -- Nov. 2, 2002

Dr. Jerry Boyd Frye died of cardiac arrest in Rapid City, S.D., while on a hunting trip last year.

Services: Potluck Celebration of Life on Saturday, April 26, noon to 4 p.m., at Scandia Hall, 131 W. Fifth St., Port Angeles.

Alice J. Hallila

May 21, 1923 -- April 7, 2003

Sequim resident Alice J. Hallila died from a massive stroke at age 79.

She was born in Haaparanta, Sweden, and immigrated with her family to the United States in 1927. They settled on a farm outside Frederick, S.D., where she spent her childhood.

After graduation from high school, she joined her older sisters in California, where she met her future husband, Paul Hallila. They were married April 6, 1942.

After World War II, they lived on the family farm in Minnesota until 1958, when they moved to San Jose, Calif. They retired to Sequim in 1988, joining the SunLand Golf Club and the Sequim Senior Center.

Mrs. Hallila enjoyed golfing, doing crosswords and spending time with her family.

She is survived by her husband in Sequim; daughter and son-in-law Judy and Paul Tarr of Everett; son and daughter-in-law Warren and Kassey Hallila of Campbell, Calif.; four grandchildren, one great-grandson; four sisters and one brother.

She was preceded in death by a son, Jay, one sister and three brothers.

Services: Celebration of Life later this month in San Jose, Calif., where her ashes will be interred at Oak Hill Cemetery, next to her son. Cremation by The Neptune Society, where an online guest book can be signed at www.neptunesociety.com.

Hazel Irene Leamer

Oct. 21, 1912 -- April 8, 2003

Hazel Irene Leamer of Port Angeles died at age 90.

She was born in Amidon, N.D., to Andrew and Clara (Mehlum) Underdahl.

She later moved to Minnesota, where she worked as a beauty operator.

In 1945, she married Roy B. Fox, and the couple moved to Spokane. The Foxes were divorced in 1963.

She later married Kenneth Leamer; he died in January 2001.

Mrs. Leamer lived in Spokane until after her second husband's death, when she moved to Port Angeles. She was active with both Boy Scouts and Girl Scout in Spokane, and she enjoyed organic gardening and canning.

Survivors include a son, Robert Roy Fox of Kennewick; daughters Linda Lorene deBord and Reta Renae Ritter, both of Port Angeles; a stepson, Vernon Leamer of Spokane; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services: None planned. Inurnment will be at Riverside Cemetery, Spokane. Drennan-Ford Funeral Home, Port Angeles, is in charge.

Memorials: Shriners Hospital for Children, 911 W. Fifth Ave., Spokane WA 99204.

Betty Lou Lindstrom

April 28, 1924 -- April 5, 2003

Port Angeles resident Betty Lou Lindstrom died at age 78.

She was born in Butte, Mont., to Otto Emil and Ellen (Newman) Anderson.

She married Gunnar T. Lindstrom on March 23, 1957. He died Sept. 6, 1988.

A homemaker who loved to read, Mrs. Lindstrom was a member of the Children's Hospital Guild, volunteering with the fund-raising bazaars and spearheading the raffles.

She was a member of the Order of Runeberg No. 129 since 1942 and Beta Sigma Phi since 1948.

Survivors include sons William and Carl Lindstrom, both of Port Angeles; a daughter, Ellen Lindstrom of Portland, Ore.; stepson and stepdaughter Bjorn Lindstrom and Irene Lindstrom, both of Sweden; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services: Memorial service Saturday, April 26, 2 p.m., First Presbyterian Church, 139 W. Eighth St., Port Angeles. Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel is in charge.

Memorials: Children's Hospital Foundation, P.O. Box 50020, Seattle WA 98145-5020.

Eyuless Eugene Coffman

Jan. 11, 1934 -- May 18, 2003

Longtime Port Angeles resident Eyuless Eugene Coffman died in Messenger House Care Center, Bainbridge Island, at age 69.

He was one of seven sons born to Thomas and Pauline (Wooten) Coffman in Muskogee, Okla.

As a youth, he moved with his family from Oklahoma to California.

He met Shirley Lawson in Tulare, Calif., and they married on Aug. 30, 1959.

The Coffmans moved to Port Angeles in 1973.

He was a fireman in the boiler room at K-Ply, from which he retired after 20 years.

Mr. Coffman liked to fish and walk on the beaches in search of agates. A carpenter, he built many cabinets and cedar chests for his family.

He is survived by son Michael Eugene Coffman and daughters Kim Coffman and Gayla Coffman, all of Port Angeles; brothers Everett Coffman of Coupeville, Thomas and Jimmy Coffman, both of Visalia, Calif., Richard Coffman of Florida and J.T. of Oklahoma; and five grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife.

Services: At his request, none. Kass Funeral Home, Bainbridge Island, is in charge.
