Renée (Olavsen) Maupin

Renée (Olavsen) Maupin, born Marlene Renée Garcia on December 10, 1932, of Maximo Garcia of Bagio, Mindanao, The Philippine Islands, and Ada Genevieve (Robinson) Garcia of Port Angeles, Wash.

Renée died June 30, 2003, at age 70.

She was raised by her stepfather, Trygve John Olavsen, and her mother, Ada, in Port Angeles, taking his surname as her own.

As a small child she lived on Ediz Hook and at 220 E. Fifth St., and attended Washington Grade School before moving to Dry Creek and attending there; graduating from the eighth grade.

In 1947, she moved with her parents to the Hoh River area and attended Quillayute Union High School in Forks, Wash., graduating in 1951. In that same year, June 23rd, she married Eddy Vern Maupin, in Forks.

Renée was a small woman, not quite 5 feet tall, but big in heart and full of laughter. She loved to fish and dig clams, and was prolific in knitting and crocheting as well as an accomplished seamstress, making many of her own and her children's clothing.

In 1957, she and her first two children followed her husband to Oregon, where she would buy her first home in the Portland, Ore., area, where her third child was born.

After her husband was injured, she became the family breadwinner, clerking for The Fred Meyer Co. in the local area. After her husband recovered, she moved again, back to her childhood area, Dry Creek, near Port Angeles, buying a home there.

After her three children were raised, she took up bowling and as expected she became an excellent bowler. She later developed arthritis and had to give up her beloved game.

Her next endeavor was singing in the Sweet Adelines Chorus, which she enjoyed greatly, but once more had to give up as her arthritis wouldn't let her do the choreography.

She was an excellent cook, and friends and family looked forward to an invitation to dinner, especially when she cooked ``pancit."

In 1989, her father, Trygve Olavsen, came to live with her due to his Alzheimer disease, and Renée lovingly cared for him until his death in 1991.

Renée was a strong person, surviving breast cancer, colon cancer and two heart attacks -- and never looked back.

In later years Renée developed diabetes, and her body functions began to fail; diminished eyesight, kidney failure and thrice-weekly dialysis where she met and developed new friendships. Finally her disabilities led her to frequent hospital stays and finally an extended stay at Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle, before coming home, where she was wonderfully cared for by her family, friends and Hospice until her death.

She is survived by her husband, Eddy Vern Maupin; her oldest son, Louis David Maupin of Sequim, Wash.; her daughter, Evonne Renée Lucas and husband Tom of Jacksonville, Fla.; son Edward Andrew Maupin and wife Marjorie of Port Angeles; 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her sister, Maxine Ramona Van Dorn of Ellensburg, Wash.

At Renée's request there was cremation, and a celebration of life will follow at the Elwha Community Center, on Old State Road off of Herrick Road, between 2 and 5 p.m. on Sunday, July 20th. A meal will be served.

Donations in lieu of flowers may be directed to: American Cancer Society; Northwest Kidney Center and Hospice or your favorite charity.

Death came in the night, taking away fears and pain, giving back the joy of laughter and running in the next creation. Death can be an enemy to those left behind to mourn their loss, but a friend indeed to those who suffer in this life. Fare thee well, my lovely bride.
