Everett Ernest `Ernie' Nichols

Sept. 14, 1937 -- July 13, 2003

Everett Ernest ``Ernie" Nichols died in Port Angeles at age 65.

Born in Pueblo, Colo., to Everett Oliver and Alsace Lorraine (Miller) Nichols, he worked as a logger in Washington and Idaho.

Mr. Nichols liked to hunt and fish as well as take drives in the country.

He married Fay Lynn Baum in St. Anthony, Idaho, on Oct. 23, 1957.

Survivors include his wife of Port Angeles; son Everett Elwood ``Woody" Nichols of Port Angeles; daughters Lori Buchanan and Noreen ``Reenie" Iverson of Port Angeles, and Sandra Chavez of Las Vegas; sisters Evelyn Burns of Amanda Park and Betty Johns of Florida; 12 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by sister Joann Lawton.

Services: At his request, none. Drennan-Ford Funeral Home, Port Angeles, is in charge of arrangements.

Duane D. Palmer

July 21, 1933 -- July 15, 2003

Port Angeles resident Duane D. Palmer died at age 69.

He was born in Newkirk, Okla., to Harold and Myrtle (Jones) Palmer.

He served in the Air Force in Greenland.

He received his teaching credential in Emporia, Kan., before going on to earn a master's degree in mathematics.

Mr. Palmer was a teacher in Kansas before working for the Boeing Co. and the University of Washington.

He came to Port Angeles four years ago.

His pastimes included cooking, playing cribbage and riding his motor scooter.

Mr. Palmer was a member of Eagles Lodge.

His 1961 marriage to Edith Laging ended in divorce.

He married Marjorie Hersh in Seattle on Aug. 18, 1973.

In addition to his wife and daughter Emily Palmer, both of Port Angeles, Mr. Palmer's survivors include daughters Teresa Denise Palmer of Issaquah and LaDonna Marie Fay-McNeil of Burien, and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by brothers Gene and Joe Palmer, both of Kansas.

Services: None. Drennan-Ford Funeral Home, Port Angeles, is in charge of arrangements.

Jeannine Monchilovich

Jan, 11, 1930 -- July 14, 2003

Jeannine Monchilovich of Port Angeles died of cancer at age 73.

She was born in Springfield, Ohio, to Rodgers A. and Effa (Neal) Haley.

Ms. Monchilovich served in the Army for 10 years. She also worked as a civilian with the Army in Germany, later moving to Henderson, Nev.

She moved to Port Angeles in 1990.

She was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion.

She is survived by brother Keith N. Haley of Tiffin, Ohio, and sister Marcia McVicar of Henderson.

Services: At her request, none. Drennan-Ford Funeral Home, Port Angeles, is in charge of arrangements.

Joan A. Olsen

Dec. 3, 1923 -- July 12, 2003

Joan A. Olsen died of cancer in Sequim. She was 79.

She was born in Marshall, Minn., to Zephyrs and Marie L. (Lagesse) LeBeau.

She married Alfred S. Olsen III on July 28, 1951, in Seattle. He died in July 1996.

Mrs. Olsen was a homemaker in Seattle and Renton for 40 years before moving to Sequim 10 years ago.

She was a member of Sequim Driftwood Club. In addition, Mrs. Olsen was a birdwatcher, avid Seattle Mariners fan and traveler who enjoyed day trips.

She is survived by son Alfred S. Olsen IV of Spokane; daughter Cherie Hilderbrand of Renton; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services: Saturday, July 19, 6 p.m., a reception will be held in Fifth Avenue Retirement Center, 500 Hendricksen Road, Sequim. Drennan-Ford Funeral Home, Port Angeles, is in charge of arrangements.

Norma M. Schmid

Feb. 28, 1924 -- July 10, 2003

Port Angeles homemaker Norma M. Schmid died in Bremerton at age 79.

She was born in Grand Forks, N.D., and came to Port Angeles in 1952.

Mrs. Schmid enjoyed arts, crafts and gardening. She also was a volunteer for the Heart Fund.

Her husband, Robert D. Schmid, whom she married in Everett in 1944, died in October 1988.

She is survived by son Daniel Schmid and daughter Roxanne Dill, both of Port Angeles, and daughter Sandra Mitchell of Modesto, Calif., six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Schmid was preceded in death by 11 siblings.

Services: Private family service with cremains interred in Mount Angeles Memorial Park. Kitsap Cremation and Burial Society, Port Orchard, was in charge of arrangements.

MARGARET EARLINE (LEWIS) BOYD

Margaret Earline (Lewis) Boyd, a resident of Vancouver, Washington since October 1999, passed away July 10, 2003, at the age of 94.

Mrs. Boyd, daughter of Claude E. and Minnie M. (Pellerin) Lewis, was born in Port Angeles on November 15, 1908. She lived in Port Angeles all her life except for a short time in her early childhood when her family homesteaded near Hardisty, Alberta, Canada, and her time in Vancouver.

She attended Blue Mountain School, worked for her room and board while attending Port Angeles High School, and graduated with the class of 1927.

Following high school she worked for the Peck and Hill Furniture Company in Seattle, then returned to Port Angeles, where she married Arley Madison Boyd on November 26, 1932.

From 1950 until her retirement in 1970, she worked as a secretary for the Timber Department of the Peninsula Plywood Corporation. During that time she was a member an officer of the Port Angeles Navy Mothers Club. She was also a member of the Port Angeles First United Methodist Church.

Her interests included bowling, crocheting, knitting, gardening and various other handicrafts. She always raised a large garden, canned fresh fruits and vegetables for her own use, and supplied many neighbors and family members with fresh produce.

Survivors include two sons, Neil Lewis Boyd of Seattle and Allan LeRoy Boyd of Vancouver, Washington; one sister, Mable Josephine Lamoureux of Seattle; five grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Arley M. Boyd, on November 11, 1991, her sister, Dorothy May Williams of Silverdale, Washington, and her brother, Lyle Francis Lewis of Steilacoom, Washington.

A graveside service will be held at the Mount Angeles Cemetery in Port Angeles on Wednesday, July 23rd, at 1 p.m., with a reception to follow at Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel, 105 W. Fourth St., Port Angeles, WA 98362.

Linda M. Coleman

Aug. 7, 1947 -- July 18, 2003

Linda M. Coleman died in Port Angeles at age 55.

Floyd Edwin `Ike' Koon

Sept. 24, 1944 -- July 17, 2003

Floyd Edwin ``Ike" Koon died from a heart attack in Port Angeles at age 58.

Mr. Koon was born to Gerald Alonzo and Miriam Abby (Berg) Koon in Scottville, Mich., and grew up on the family farm there.

Mr. Koon moved to Port Angeles in 1960.

He married Jacqueline Joy Griffith in Port Angeles on Nov. 3, 1970.

He was a retired construction millwright/welder and a logger and shake bolt cutter.

Mr. Koon enjoyed hunting, crabbing and camping. He was a licensed pilot and enjoyed taking his family on flights. He painted landscapes and enjoyed animals.

He was instrumental in reviving Port Angeles' July 4 fireworks display in the early 1980s.

Mr. Koon was a member of Independent Order of Foresters and a former local president. He also was a member of and former financial secretary with Carpenters and Pile Drivers Local 1303.

He was also assisted with prop design and construction for the Port Angeles Light Opera Association.

Survivors include his wife of Port Angeles; daughters Jennifer Koon and Melissa Peterson, both of Port Angeles; and sisters Nona Settell of Shelton, Abby Balthazor of Bear Creek, Wis., and Geraldine Hunt of Port Angeles.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Raymond Koon.

Services: Sunday, Aug. 3, 2 p.m., informal memorial gathering at the family home, 922 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles. Drennan & Ford Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Harry Raymond Williams

Jan. 25, 1928 -- July 16, 2003

Harry Raymond Williams of Port Townsend died at Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle following a heart attack. He was 75.

Mr. Williams was born to Earl Monroe and Edna (Schriver) Williams in Uniontown, Pa.

He married Nellie Catherine Pellicer in Arvada, Colo., on June 17, 1971.

Mr. Williams served in the Navy from 1948 to 1954.

He received an engineering degree from Colgate College, and was a mechanical engineer.

Mr. Williams enjoyed scroll woodworking and model shipbuilding, and was a volunteer in charge of church buildings and grounds. He was a Red Cross volunteer.

Mr. Williams, a member of San Juan Baptist Church, was a Port Townsend resident for 15 years.

Survivors include his wife; son Chris R. Anderson of Seattle; daughters and sons-in-law Robin D. and Gary Boyter of Dallas, Texas, Rebecca R. and Joe Snell of Phoenix, Ariz., and Dannill and Jim Gilsdorf of Stokesdale, N.C.; daughters Rebecca Williams of Seattle and Diana Matatia of Las Vegas; brothers Ted Williams of Phoenix and Earl Williams of Alaska; sister Emma Lou Williams of Phoenix; nine grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by brother Pete Williams.

Services: Memorial service at 3:30 p.m. today, July 20, at San Juan Baptist Church, 1704 Discovery Road, Port Townsend with the Rev. Dan McMillen officiating. A reception will follow. Committal service will be at Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent. Kosec Funeral Home & Crematory of Port Townsend is in charge of arrangements.

Judith Marie `Jude' Davies

Jan. 22, 1941 --July 15, 2003

Port Townsend resident Judith Marie ``Jude" Davies died of cancer in her Kala Point home at age 62.

She was born in Spokane to Earl John and Linnea Ingeborg (Borjesson) Sauer and grew up in Shoreline.

After receiving her bachelor's degree in nursing from Seattle Pacific University and the University of Washington in 1963, she pursed a varied career in nursing working in critical care, emergency, medical sales and home health.

Then she was the sole medical care provider for Trident Seafoods and the local Native American village in the Aleutian Islands in 1992.

She married James Albert Davies in Boulder, Colo., on Sept. 2, 1972, With their daughter, they lived in Algeria for two years.

They also lived in Boulder, Anchorage, Alaska, and Houston, Texas, before coming to Port Townsend in 1997.

Mrs. Davies once traveled alone from Houston to Anchorage, accidentally locking herself out of her car while she took a photo of a moose -- while bare-armed in minus-20-degree weather. She flagged a passing trucker for assistance, then continued north.

She enjoyed walking at Fort Worden State Park, cooking lasagna, listening to Zydeco and Gipsy Kings music, and reading the Psalms. She earned a certificate from the Coast Guard Auxiliary.

In addition to her husband, daughter Kristina Marander, and sister Ruth Whitney, all of Port Townsend, Mrs. Davies is survived by sons Robert Davies of San Diego, Jack Davies of Thousand Oaks, Calif., and Mark Davies of Burbank, Calif., eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Services: Sunday, July 27, 2 p.m., memorial in First Presbyterian Church, 1111 Franklin St., Port Townsend. The Rev. Robert Slayter will officiate. Burial will be on the family homestead in Logan County, Colo. Kosec Funeral Home, Port Townsend, is in charge of arrangements.
