Redfield, Maureen Monday, 23 Feb 2004
Maureen Redfield died unexpectedly Feb. 23, 2004, at her beloved home on Manzanita Beach, Maury Island. She was 71 years old.
Born in Vancouver, British Columbia, she attended Seton Academy in Vancouver, Holy Names and Forest Ridge Academies in Seattle and graduated from the University of Washington in Journalism.
While at the UW, she met and fell in love with Bartlett Redfield. They were married in Japan while Bart was serving in the US Air Force. Maureen was married to and dearly loved Bart for 49 years.
The two moved to Vashon year-round in 1983 after summering on the Island all their married life. She was involved with the Garden Club, the Democratic Party and the Dockton Water Association among other interests.
Maureen loved being outdoors and thoroughly enjoyed day hikes with Bart and “the girls” (their dogs) and/or friends. She was a lover of literature and words and enjoyed going with friends to the Shakespeare Festival in Ashland. She always had projects going: sewing, cooking all types of cuisine, and “grubbing” in Vashon’s native clay to create beautiful gardens.
She received considerable pleasure from caring for those she loved.
Friends and family say Mrs. Redfield was a nurturer, compassionate, open-minded, intelligent, wise and warm.
Survivors include her husband, Bart, of Vashon; her son Michael and daughter-in-law Nancy of Seattle; daughter Shaela Hull and son-in-law Tom of Seattle; son Matthew of Seattle; grandchildren Noah, Asa, Aleah and Seth Redfield, and Dan, Olivia and Malcolm Hull; step brothers Ronald Welsh of Sitka, Alaska, and Daynard Welsh of Langley, BC.
A memorial to celebrate her life will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 14, at Vashon United Methodist Church, 17928 Vashon Highway S.W.
Remembrances may be made to The Alzheimer’s Association, 12721 30th NE, Seattle, Wash. 98125.

Bates, Dr. Norman R. Friday, 20 Feb 2004
Norman R. Bates, a resident and physician on Vashon Island from 1957 to 1965, died Feb. 20, 2004, in Seattle. He was 80 years old.
He was born Oct. 22, 1923, to Olga and Harold Bates. He grew up with an older brother in Brooklyn, New York, and both joined the Army in 1942.
Mr. Bates served with the 10th Mountain Division, 87th Regiment in Northern Italy until 1945. The GI bill provided the opportunity for him to attend Middlebury College where he ran cross-country and track, developed a love for American literature and earned a degree in Biochemistry.
He met Helen Guernsey at Middlebury and they married in 1951. He practiced medicine for many years on Vashon Island and in West Seattle. As a family doctor, one of the responsibilities that he enjoyed most was delivering babies.
He engaged his family with his love of the mountains and water. Family time was spent snow skiing, hiking, and boating. Norm also enjoyed square dancing, painting, sculpting, gardening and running marathons.
In later years, Dr. Bates moved to a farm in Enumclaw. There, he raised horses, ran, gardened and skied at Crystal.
Survivors include a brother, Jim Bates of New York, a son, Steve Bates of Seattle, and three daughters, Marti Carl of Richland, Kathryn Hill of Walla Walla and Karin Ockerman of Kirkland, and 10 grandchildren. His ex-wife, Helen Bates, lives in Des Moines.
Marta Ekland and her daughter Jill were friend sand supported the family throughout the years.
A private gathering will be held to celebrate his life.
Friends and family say they will miss his knowledge, humor, generosity and gentle caring way.

Hitch, Lonnie Bruce Thursday, 19 Feb 2004
Lonnie Bruce Hitch died Feb. 19, 2004, at Harborview Medical Center after a brief illness. He was 51 years old.
Mr. Hitch was an employee at Camp Burton.
Survivors include a son David Hitch, and a daughter Shannon Hitch, and four grandchildren, Juliette, Jasmin and Christopher Chesterfield and Kendal Hitch.
Other survivors include his mother Helen Hitch and seven siblings, Nancy Cook, Bob, Steve, John, Terrie, Gordon and Greg Hitch.
Mr. Hitch had an extended family.
Services will be at 4 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 26, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints.
A reception will follow at Camp Burton Lodge at 5:30.
Arrangements were entrusted to Island Funeral Service.

Carey, Chris Jan Tuesday, 10 Feb 2004
Chris Jan Carey died February 10, 2004. She was 49 years old.
She was born Sept. 2, 1954, in Mankato, Minn., and moved to Winona, Minn., in the seventh grade where she met her lifelong friend Nancy Cieminski.
Friends say she was a friend to many people. Animals were her passion.
People who knew her are invited to celebrate her life at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 21, at the Sportsman’s Inn.
In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to Vashon Island Pet Protectors.

Boyes, Gordon M. "Zeke" Saturday, 07 Feb 2004
Gordon M. Boyes died Feb. 7, 2004, in his sleep. He was 78 years old.
He also went by “Zeke, ” “Zannonie, ” and John Lodigiany.
There will be a celebration of Zekes life at 7 p.m. Saturday, March 6, at the Eagles Club.
Friends encourage all to come and tell the stories of the time they experienced with this extraordinary man.
Boyes, Gordon M. Saturday, 07 Feb 2004
Gordon M. Boyes died Feb. 7, 2004, at his home on Vashon. He was 78 years old.
He was born April 19, 1925.
Mr. Boyes also was known as “Zeke, ” “Zannonie, ” and “John Lodigiany.”
In his lifetime he led a multitude of lives.
Mr. Boyes was born in Spokane, Wash., on a farm in Hillyard. His family relocated to Tacoma where he attended Lower Elementary, Mason Middle school and Stadium High school.
After graduating Zeke joined the Army where he was a youth counselor at the end of World War II. He then joined the Merchant Marines and was in Korea during the war but saw no action.
He then played football and attended the University of Alaska, College of Puget Sound, Washington C.P.S., and in Chico, California.
While in California he met his best friend Dan Guerrero, had an apartment in San Francisco on Haight Ashbury during the peak of the hippie movement where he met Janice Joplin and had a great time.
Zeke was a roomer, never staying in one place too long.
His first real job was at Bethlehem Steel, but he also worked as a bellhop, utility worker, youth counselor, postman, Kaiser, ran a bingo hall and gave lectures, just to name a few.
It was once said that Zeke had over 160 jobs in his life time.
In 1972 Zeke moved to Vashon where he continued the American Free Lutheran Church and started a youth camp in Cove.
In the 1980s he returned to Spokane, where he cared for his ailing mother until she died.
In 1986 Zeke returned to Vashon and lived in the cabin at the entrance of KVI Beach. He then bought some property on Maury Island and again continued the American Free Lutheran Church.
His passion was rock ’n’ roll, women, and to have a good time leading life as he saw fit at that moment with no regrets.
He had seen the Rolling Stones on their first tour of the United States, the Beatles, and he’d been to Woodstock.
Zeke died with no regrets and no pain.
Zeke leaves behind his dog, Alex, who was his ever his faithful companion and many close friends who he deemed family, including Carol and Tom Kruse and family, Ed Troughton, Victoria Zander and family, Jim and Joyce Hunzicker, Audry and BJ Jones and family, Jim and Eydie Large and family, Drex and Diane Adkison and family, Matthew DelFavre and Fran Martini, Janell and Vern Neumiller and Sue Poggensee just to name a few.
There was a private service and celebration of his life at the Eagles Club.

Catherine M. Barr, 89
Catherine M. Barr died Feb. 4, 2004, at the Vashon Community Care Center. She was 90 years old.
She was born Nov. 5, 1913, in Lewistown, Mt., and lived there until 1990 when she moved to Spokane to be with her daughter, Cathie Fisher.
When Cathie was transferred to Seattle, she and Catherine moved to Vashon Island. Catherine was active in the Time Out Adult Day Care program and attended luncheons at the Senior Center.
She became a resident at the Vashon Community Care Center in December, 1998 after suffering several small strokes.
Mrs. Barr was active in the Presbyterian Church in Lewistown and served as Elder and church secretary. She also worked as bookkeeper at Lewistown Cycle and Marine and eventually became owner. She loved gardening, sewing, knitting, and many other crafts. She was also an accomplished artist in oils and watercolors.
A brother, Robert Taylor, former husband Philip F. Barr, and sons William and Philip T. Barr all died earlier.
Survivors include her son, John R. Barr of Barrington, Illinois, her daughter Cathie Fisher of Vashon, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Services for Catherine will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 12, at the Episcopal Church of the Holy Spirit, 15420 Vashon Highway S.W., Vashon, where her daughter is the Director of Music.

Raab, Robert 'Tony' Anthony Thursday, 03 Jun 2004
Robert “Tony” Anthony Raab died June 3, 2004, at his home in Kent, Wash., after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 67 years old.
Mr. Raab was born March 8, 1937. He grew up on Vashon Island and graduated from Vashon High School. He attended college in California where he and his family lived part time for many years in Palm Springs.
He then moved to Billings, Mont., where he lived for more than 30 years.
He went to the Foster Tukwila Presbyterian Church.
His interests were in real estate for the last 14 years, including dealing, buying and selling cars and long-haul truck driving. He also enjoyed race cars.
Survivors include his sister Shirley Gray and her sons Lloyd and Wayne Raab, son Doug Raab, daughter Tony and husband Danny Schwarzman, son Brad and wife Michelle Middling, daughter Debbie and her husband David Long, daughter Linda and her husband Robert Elfstrom, daughter Candy and husband Jerry Hoeper, son Steve Middling, several grandchildren and many friends.
The family thanks the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center for the car and support and Kent Hospice of Seattle.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Friday, June 11, at Island Funeral Service on Vashon.
A gathering will be at the Sportsmen’s Club after the service.
Memorials may be made to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center.

Fuller, Gloria Natalie Elmore Sunday, 30 May 2004
Gloria Natalie Elmore Fuller passed away May 30, 2004 at the age of 68. She was born in Spokane, WA, August 24, 1935 to William and Gladys Elmore.
Gloria grew up in Spokane and Vashon. She graduated from Vashon High School in 1953. In 1954 she married George Fuller. She worked at K2 Corp. and Pacific Research. She was a PTA member, a Den Mother and very active member of the Vashon FOE #3144.
Some of Gloria’s favorite things to do were cooking fabulous meals for her family and friends, gardening, and spending time with people she loved. She was very well known for her impeccable wedding cakes. She will be remembered for her generous spirit and friendship to others.
Gloria was preceded in death by her father, William and brother Robert Elmore. She is survived by her life partner, George Fuller of Vashon; her mother, Gladys Elmore, Vashon; children, Steven (Megan) Fuller, Tacoma; Roy (Susan) Fuller, Twisp; David Fuller, Vashon; Susan (Doug) Hoffmann, Vashon; sisters Carol Cummings, Seattle; and Billie (William) Coomer, Raymond; grandsons Andrew Fuller, Paul Fuller, Tim Fuller, Jesse Fuller, Michael Hoffmann, Aunt Ora Belle Stolz, Spokane; Uncle Jerry Ewing, Spokane; and several cousins, nieces and nephews who will miss her dearly.
Remembrances may be sent to the Make A Wish Foundation through the Vashon Eagles and to the American Cancer Society.
A celebration of her life will be on June 13, 2004 from 12-2 p.m. at her home for family and close friends, or at the Vashon Eagles at 3 p.m.
