Bowers, Judith Ann Thursday, 08 Sep 2005
Judy Bowers of Vashon, Washington passed away Thursday, September 8th, 2005. Judy was born in Petoskey, Michigan June 10th 1939 (66 years ago). Survivors include her husband Phil of Vashon, daughters Kelly Ann of Seattle and Elizabeth Susan of Seattle, one granddaughter Olivia Ann Hamilton and a grandson Lucas Philip Hamilton. Judy graduated from Stephens College in
Columbus, Missouri. She married Philip William Bowers October 1st, 1960.
She was an avid traveler, active in the community, with a passion for interior design. She overcame many obstacles, and set an heroic example for all who knew her.
Memorial service will be held September 16th at Vashon Methodist Church at 2:00p.m. Memorial gifts in Judith’s memory may be made to The Burton Community Church, P.O. Box 13134, Burton, WA 98013.

Chwaszczewski, Briana Marie Aspiri Monday, 05 Sep 2005
Briana Marie Aspiri Chwaszczewski died Sept. 9, 2005, at Harborview Medical Center from injuries suffered in a horse training accident Sept. 5.
Briana turned 23 years old Sept. 7. She was training her dream horse, Divine, when the accident occurred. Her family said her last hours were spent on her horse, training, riding and full of happiness.
Briana grew up on Vashon Island and was active in Pony Club all her life. She created, owned and operated Olympic Breeze Stables where she taught riding lessons, trained horses and held summer camps for children.
Briana and Max Chwaszczewski were married Sept. 20, 2003, and made their home in Port Orchard.
Survivors include her husband Max, her parents Pamn and Paul Aspiri, brother Ryan, in-laws Beth and Rich Chwaszczewski, brothers-in-law Mike and Kenny Chwaszczewski, great grandmother Marie Aspiri, and grandparents Patricia and Bruce Salyer and Edith and Ray Aspiri.
Other survivors include aunts Kim Salyer, Tressa Azpiri, Mitzi Aspiri, Karen Heit, Debbie Azpiri and Maureen Casey; uncles Miles Salyer, Gary Aspiri, Mark Aspiri, John Azpiri and Randy Heit; and cousins Siena Salyer, Jasmine, Jarem, Kramer, Madison and Carmen Aspiri, and Spencer, Tylor, Austyn and Wyatt Heit.
The family says Briana approached life with joy and love, and brought strength and happiness to every life she touched.
A service will be at 3 p.m. today, Sept. 14, in the Vashon High School gym.

Mish, Nancy Reed Tuesday, 19 Jul 2005
Islander Nancy Reed Mish, who dedicated her life to education, died July 19, 2005. She was 72 years old.
She spent summers in Dockton as a child and moved to Tahlequah when she was 12 years old and lived there until her death.
She graduated from Vashon High School and Washington State University and was president of the Kappa Delta sorority.
She also was a Fullbright scholar and spent summer in Korea and Nepal in her youth.
Mrs. Mish also was a Peach Festival princess on Vashon.
She was a social worker and teacher on Vashon for 30 years. She worked at her alma mater, Vashon High School, and at McMurray Middle School. She enjoyed teaching Pacific Northwest history. Mrs. Mish also was a tennis and cheerleading coach and a yearbook adviser.
She was especially fond of the south end of Vashon where she was a pillar of the Tahlequah community. She was active in the Southend Community Club and held every office there.
She rowed around Vashon Island twice - once with her mother and later with her children and friends.
Mrs. Mish and her husband Bill owned and operated the William O. Mish Water Department.
She and Bill celebrated their 50th anniversary three weeks before she died.
They owned a cabin in Ashford at the foot of Mount Rainier and always had friends and students stay there on ski trips. They also had a time share in Cabo San Lucas and were always having friends visit.
Mrs. Mish was known for loving her animals, her students, history, traveling and combining teaching and traveling. She once visited Tahlequah, Okla., and taught students there about Vashon’s Tahlequah.
She was a volunteer at Granny’s Attic and the Vashon Community Care Center.
Survivors include her husband Bill, sons Dave Mish and Doug Mish, both of Vashon, and grandson Jesse Mish.
A celebration of her life was held at the Southend Community Club with sorority sisters, students, friends and co-workers sharing good memories of her.

Whitecar, John D. Wednesday, 31 Aug 2005
John D. Whitecar, age 91, died on Aug. 31, 2005, at the Vashon Community Care Center. He was born on March 26, 1914, in Philadelphia, Penn., and was a Vashon resident for the last 20 years.
Mr. Whitecar enlisted in the United States Navy in 1931 and married Alberta Eglisdorf in 1938. They remained together for 55 years until her death on Vashon in 1993.
He received a medical discharge from the Navy in 1943 because of a back injury, and at the end of World War II, he and his family relocated to southern California, where he worked as an engineering technician at the Natural Parachute Test Center in El Centro until his retirement in 1976.
He and his wife later moved to Washington, building a home at Gold Beach on Maury Island in 1985.
He was a 32nd degree Mason in the Scottish Rite Masonic Order, and he and his wife were active members of the Vashon Senior Citizen Center.
He is survived by his two sons John Whitecar of Okanogan, Wash. and Devin Orion of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and by his three grandsons, Michael Whitecar, Stephen Whitecar and Andrew Whitecar.
No services were planned at his request.

Gordon, Edna Thursday, 28 Jul 2005
Edna Gordon died July 28, 2005, in Seattle. She was 93 years old.
She was born and raised in Seattle, attending Franklin High School and Pacific Lutheran University.
She worked in management at Pacific Northwest Bell for 41 years. She was a member of the Washington Athletic Club and the Swedish Club.
Her main interests were her family and her Maury Island beach home where she enjoyed walking and exploring.
She also was interested in conversation and dancing. Her family says they will miss her deeply.
Survivors include her sister Jane Beczo and brother-in-law Bill of Seattle, her nieces Barb Smith and her husband Doug of Vashon and Pat Desgroseillier of Roy and nephew Bill Beczo Jr. and wife Stephanie Selig of Seattle. She also was a great aunt to Erin and Shannon O’Malley and Elizabeth Desgroseillier.
A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 26, at the Horizon House, 900 University Street, Seattle, in the Sky Lounge.
In lieu of flowers remembrances may be sent in her name to University Presbyterian Church Children’s Department or the charity of choice.
She also was interested in conversation and dancing. Her family says they will miss her deeply.

Plancich Jr., Lucas G. Tuesday, 16 Aug 2005
Lucas “Luke” G. Plancich, a lifelong Islander, died Aug. 16, 2005, in Seattle. He was 84 years old.
Mr. Plancich was born Oct. 18, 1920, on Vashon Island to Lucas and Effie Plancich. He lived his entire life on Vashon.
He was a commercial fisherman with his father while growing up. He was the oldest of 11 children.
He also was well known for the 30 years that he worked for the King County Road Department on Vashon. While working for the county he also enjoyed working with children. He helped organize the first boys Little League baseball teams.
Mr. Plancich was a volunteer for Vashon Island Fire & Rescue for many years. Luke and his wife Beverly raised a family of five children on Vashon.
He was one of the original members to help build the VFW Hall.
He also was very active in the Fraternal Order of the Eagles.
Mr. Plancich served in World War II in the Navy in the South Pacific.
His two brothers, Dick and Jerry Plancich, died earlier.
Survivors include his wife Beverly and his five children, Caroline Gregory and her husband Sid of Monroe, Keith Plancich of Florida, Karen Thorne of Lynnwood, Luke Plancich of North Cove and Karla Angilley of Olalla, and five brothers including Russell and Bob Plancich of Vashon, and Gordon Plancich and Allen Plancich of Bellevue and Mike Plancich of Marysville, and sisters Eleanor Arnold of Vashon and Vivian Fields of Oregon, Iona Johnson of North Dakota, and 13 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Memorial donations may be made to Vashon Island Fire & Rescue at P.O. Box 1150, Vashon, Wash. 98070.
A catered reception to honor Mr. Plancich's life will meet from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17, at the Vashon Eagles Club.

DeVaul, Dannielle "Dani" Wednesday, 17 Aug 2005
Danielle “Dani” DeVaul died Aug. 17, 2005, in a car accident in La Ceiba, Honduras. She was 41 years old.
She was born June 19, 1964, in St. Paul, Minn.
Her family says she enjoyed family, friends, entertaining and travel.
They remember her for having an endless amount of energy. She enjoyed preparing gourmet food on a moment’s notice. She was known for creating beautiful jewelry and giving it away to people.
She was in Roatan, Honduras to celebrate her sister’s birthday when she died.
She also was working to start a Spanish wine importing business, Winn DeVaul Imports, with her friend Cory Winn.
In addition to her children Avery and Daehler DeVaul of Vashon Island, survivors include her mother and stepfather, Pat and George Tolar of Port Orchard, sisters Debi and her husband Gary of Tacoma and Aimee and her husband Brandon of Brooklyn, N.Y., and numerous nieces and nephews as well as a multitude of friends.
A memorial service will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 24, at First Lutheran Church, 2483 Mitchell Road S.E., Port Orchard.
Following the service, friends are invited to celebrate her life at 6 p.m. at the home of Cory and David Winn, 9518 S.W. Bank Road on Vashon.
Burial will be at 10:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 25, at the Vashon cemetery.

Morgan, Jack Friday, 12 Aug 2005
Islander Jack Morgan died Aug. 12, 2005. A memorial service and celebration of his life will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 28, at the Vashon Methodist Church.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the church or to the Jack and Martha Morgan scholarship of the Vashon Community Scholarship Foundation.

Norin, Garland Baker Saturday, 11 Nov 2006
Garland Baker Norin, a Vashon Island resident for 65 years, died Nov. 11, 2006, at her Burton Peninsula home. She was 91 years old.
Ms. Norin was born June 25, 1915, in Tacoma. She spent her youth in Auburn and graduated from Auburn High School in 1931. She attended the State College of Washington (now Washington State University), graduating with a bachelor’s degree in speech in 1935 and serving as secretary of the associated students. She later returned to WSU to earn a master’s degree in speech in 1971.
She taught high school in LaCrosse, Wash., for two years before marrying Sam Norin in 1937 and moving to Centralia where she worked for radio station KELA.
The Norins moved to Vashon Island in 1941, first living in Ellisport and then moving to Burton two weeks before Pearl Harbor. From 1952 until 1978 Ms. Norin taught in the Vashon Schools, first at Burton Elementary School, then at Vashon High School, where she taught English and drama. During her tenure at the high school, she directed 58 plays. As a member of the Vashon Community Players and Drama Dock, she appeared in many theatrical productions as well.
After retiring from teaching, Ms. Norin opened a collectables shop, Spindrifters, in the Pike Place Market, which she ran until retiring (again) in 2001.
Ms. Norin was a noted writer and historian. In 1957 she published “Vashon Island Is, ” a collection of sketches and poems from her Burton Elementary seventh and eighth graders. She republished the book in 1978 with updates by McMurray School students. She was co-editor (with Marj Watkins) of the book “The Past Remembered, A Vashon-Maury Island Student Community Project, ” a 1978 publication containing history, stories and photographs pertaining to early Vashon Island and its people and places. She was also editor of the 1991 sequel, “The Past Remembered II, Vashon-Maury Island Memories, ” stories collected by Blanche Caffiere and others. Ms. Norin also wrote feature articles for The Beachcomber and Seattle Times. She was a long-time member and served on the board of the Vashon-Maury Island Heritage Association.
Her husband Sam died in 1984. Survivors include her sons Bob of Tigard, Oregon, and Bill of San Diego, Calif. five grandchildren, a foster son Warren Yeend of Los Altos Hills, Calif. and hundreds and hundreds of her former students.
Contributions in her memory may be made to the Vashon-Maury Island Heritage Association, P.O. Box 723, Vashon, Wash. 98070.

Shigley, Asa W. Thursday, 09 Nov 2006
Asa Shigley was born on July 4, 1920, in Seattle, Wash. He died Nov. 9, 2006, in Seattle.
Mr. Shigley grew up in and around the Seattle area. He joined the Navy at 17 and was discharged in October of 1941. He then joined the Sailors Union of the Pacific and shipped out of Seattle on the sailing vessel Commodore. As WWII broke in December, the ship was forced to sail around the Cape of Capricorn.
During WWII, he sailed for the Merchant Marine and crossed the Atlantic numerous times in the supply convoys to Europe. After the war, he returned to Seattle and began building fishing boats with his father in Port Orchard.
In 1946, he met and married his wife Lois in Sitka, Alaska. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in September.
In 1953, Mr. Shigley went back to the Merchant Marine, where he sailed as a captain until 1972. He then worked as a Port Captain until 1986 when he retired. He moved to Vashon in 1950 and considered it his home for the remainder of his life.
He was a president of the Cape Horners Club of North America, which was a “Last Man” association composed of those who had “rounded the Cape” on sailing vessels. He was a devoted family man, his family says.
Survivors include his wife Lois and children Rebecca and her husband Terry Raisio, Asa and his wife Karen, and Mike. Additional survivors include his grandchildren Sam, Ben, Asa, Ryan, Jacquelyn, Joe, Tyson and Mallory and great grandchildren Hunter and Natalia. They will miss his love and concern.
There was no funeral service.
