McCann, Mark Monday, 29 May 2006
Mark McCann died May 29, 2006, at age 55. He was born in Bristol, Conn. in October 1950 to Charles J., and Barbara McCann. The family moved to Ellensburg in 1961, where McCann excelled on the high school tennis team, and then the family moved to Olympia in 1968. He graduated from Western Washington University with a degree in history.
Mr. McCann lived on Vashon Island for more than 25 years. He played guitar and banjo in conjunction with a passion for bluegrass music. To a large degree, Mr. McCann’s primary interests lay outdoors in the bird and plant life of the natural world — he was a friend of the environment.
Survivors include sons from a former marriage, Christopher and Dylan; three sisters, Mary, Jane and Nancy; and two brothers, John and Peter.
Remembrances may be made to the local chapter of the National Audubon Society.

Jernegan, Pamela M. Saturday, 27 May 2006
Pamela M. Jernegan, resident of Vashon from 1995 to 2003, died May 27, 2006, at her home in Richmond, Va. after a long illness. She was 58.
Mrs. Jernegan was a steadfast volunteer at Wednesday Night Dinner until ill health interfered. She was a gardener and supporter of Vashon farmers, a rescuer of unwanted dogs, a gourmet cook, and an embroidery expert.
Survivors include her husband Jeffrey, her son Kevin, her second father Wayne Meek (all formerly of Vashon), her brother Gary Martin of Mississippi, and sisters Barbara Angersbach and Suzanne Kohl of Washington.
A private family memorial gathering is planned for July in Seattle.

Schaal, Lillian Anna Wendland Wednesday, 24 May 2006
Lillian Anna Wendland Schaal died May 24, 2006, at 98½ years old. She was born in Seattle Jan. 10, 1908, to Seattle pioneers Anna Victoria and Otto Leopold Wendland.
A lifetime resident of Washington state, she made homes in West Seattle, Bellevue and Cashmere.
Mrs. Schaal graduated from Ballard High School in 1926. She worked for Frederick and Nelson and Rhodes department stores, playing basketball for Rhodes. She was a teacher at Seattle Day Nursery.
Staying busy, she learned to drive at 70 years of age and painted oil paintings of the many mountains she loved.
She took many first prize ribbons for her canned goods and “Gold Apple” first prize for her winning apple pie at the Wenatchee State Fair.
She lived in Cashmere until she was 92 years old, where she fished the rivers and lakes. Her family started the Cashmere Valley Bank.
Her family says she was a devoted, loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and leaves behind a legacy of strength and service to her family, friends and the Lord.
They say her artistic sensitivity and determination created many loving hearts and friendly memories.
Mrs. Schaal was also a lifelong, active and committed member of the Lutheran Church.
Mrs. Schaal was the mother of Judith Manerud Lawrence of Vashon Island, where Lillian was a resident for the past three years.
Her son Gerald Manerud, daughter Janet Elaine Noffsinge, granddaughter Jennifer Nell Lawrence, and husband Max Schaal all died earlier.
Survivors include her daughter Judith, grandchildren Noel Manerud, Lacy Lawrence Elins, Richard Ryan Lawrence, Brad Noffsinger and Celiste Noffsinger, as well as great grandchildren Janet and Jennifer Noffsinger, Owen and Zoe Manerud, and nieces Carol Lemonds Dewell, Joan Lemonds Roush, Marilyn Kavanaugh and Marsha Shin, and nephew Steve Lemonds.
Mrs. Schaal died peacefully, the last of her 10 siblings.
A memorial will be held in the gardens of the Betty McDonald Farm on Vashon Island.

Ferguson, Dave Tuesday, 23 May 2006
Dave Ferguson died May 23, 2006. He was 53 years old.
Mr. Ferguson was born Jan. 10, 1953, in Seattle. He moved to Vashon when he was 14 years old and graduated from Vashon High School in 1972.
From there he served in the Navy for two years before returning to Vashon, where he married , and worked at K2 for 20 years.
He then moved to Port Orchard and enjoyed the last years of his life running his own business as an electrical contractor.
This was his favorite occupation because it allowed him to have office in his home, friends and family say.
Camping and fishing were big on his summer to-do list. He loved to haul the ol’ Winnebago over the Pass to explore the latest campground. For him, there was no greater thrill that to build a big campfire and sit in its glow long into the night.
He also loved fireworks. The Fourth of July was his special day, and he was good at bartering with the people selling fireworks on the Puyallup Indian Reservation. He knew how to put on a great show. He also loved barbequing, fixing things, and wearing home-made tie-dye T-shirts.
Survivors include his daughters Lisa and Kelly Ferguson, their mother, Dorrie, his golden lab, Lucy, and many friends and family.
A service will be at 2 p.m. Friday, June 16 at the home of Scott and Lisa Betz at 12931 S.W. 300th St. in Tahlequah. Call 206-940-8402 for directions, and follow the signs.

Broughton, Ethel (Snow) Saturday, 13 May 2006
Ethel “Snow” Broughton died May 13, 2006, in Spokane near her children. She was 80 years old.
She was born Sept. 16, 1925, in Everett to Mabel and George Snow.
She graduated from Everett High School in 1944.
She married Bruce Broughton on June 22, 1947.
The two traveled extensively throughout their 53-year marriage and made many friends along the way. They raised their family in Othello and then moved to Vashon Island where they treasured their waterfront paradise. Their home was always open for family and friends, and Ethel greeted everyone with a smile and had an infectious laugh. Her most recent highlight of her travels was a trip to Peoria for Mariner’s spring training with her sisters and two nieces.
Even though in recent years she couldn’t see well, she still enjoyed a game at Safeco Field, it was enough just to be there and feel and hear the excitement!
Survivors include her four sons Dick Broughton and his wife Susan, Ed Broughton and his wife Marnie, Roger Broughton and his wife Janet and Clay Broughton and his wife Deanne. Other survivors include two sisters, Dorothy LaLone and Shirley Daily and her husband Bill, sister-in-law Kathleen Snow, three nephews, Bob and Jim LaLone, Tom Twede, and two nieces Judy Troyer and Sue Galde and all of their families.
Her husband and her brother died earlier. There will be no services at her request.

Dasche, Ruth Isabel Tuesday, 09 May 2006
Ruth Dasche died May 9, 2006, at her home with family, hospice and friends nearby. She was 76 years old.
Her family says she ended a more than 10-year struggle with breast cancer and amazed those she knew by giving quality time to say goodbye to her.
She was born Aug. 31, 1929, in Newark, New Jersey. Her parents were children of Russian Hungarian immigrants who met in an orphanage as children.
She married Dan Brice when she was 17 years old. Her first child was born while her husband was serving in the military in Korea.
The two had three sons, Kerry, Gavin and Rory Brice.
After divorcing, she went on to obtain a bachelor’s degree and then a master’s degree on her own, and she received many post-graduate certifications.
Ms. Dasche developed her own private practice as a psychotherapist and marriage and family counselor in Southern California where she lived for more than 40 years.
She was a lifelong political activist, supporting the Democratic party, the Green party, numerous political candidates, women’s issues and conservation groups as well as campaigns for social justice, access to health care and her personal favorite, Democracy Now!, an alternative news program.
After retiring, she moved to Vashon Island in June 2003 where she touched the lives of many.
The family thanks the Vashon Hospice team and devoted friends and family who made her last few years enjoyable.
A celebration of her life is planned for 2 p.m. Sunday, June 18, at the Vashon Land Trust Building. All are welcome.

Wise (Garlick), Betty Catherine Tuesday, 09 May 2006
Betty Catherine Wise (Garlick) died May 9, 2006, in Seattle, Wash. from multiple medical complications. She was 90 years old.
She was born Oct. 28, 1915, in Toledo, Ohio.
She spent most of her life in the Toledo, Ohio, and Ann Arbor, Mich. areas, with North Lake being the family homestead.
After retirement, the Garlicks lived in Superior, Mont., Hubbard Lake, Mich. and Sequim, Wash. At the time of death, she lived on Vashon.
Her parents, Carmen and Edward Wise, from Chelsea, Mich., died earlier, as did her husband of 57 years, F. Lawrence Garlick.
Survivors include her children Judy Balas of Madison, Wisc., M.J. Garlick of Puyallup, Wash., Susan Garlick of Vashon and Larry Garlick of Fort Benton, Mont. Four grandchildren and three great grandchildren also survive her.
A private memorial will be later.Remembrances may be sent to Vashon Household, P.O. Box 413, Vashon, Wash. 98070.

Ramquist, Amos Homer Wednesday, 21 Mar 2007
Amos Homer Ramquist was born at Alki Point, West Seattle, on Feb. 21, 1910, and died March 21, 2007, one month after his 97th birthday.
He grew up on Vashon Island, the sixth of seven children born to an early Seattle resident and merchant tailor, Oscar and Lydia Ramquist.
After graduating from the University of Washington, Amos had a long career as a mechanical engineer, which included working on reliability for the Apollo rockets and various programs for Boeing.
Family and friends say they will remember Amos for his love for Christ, his quick wit, his passion for etymology and his genius in creating or repairing anythingmechanical.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Lynne, four children and their spouses, 11 grandchildren and an older sister Mayreld Parker of Seattle.
Memorial services were held March 31 in Bellevue. Donations may be made to Northwest Missionary Haven, 12915 S.E. 18th Street, Renton, Wash. 98058.

Folan, Helen Saturday, 10 Feb 2007
Helen S. Folan died February 10, 2007, in Manzanillo, Mexico just after a wonderful evening out with daughter Mary Claire and friends from Portland, Ore. She enjoyed life to the last.
Helen Folan was born to Pascal and Aurore Sirois on March 9, 1912, in Jefferson, S.D. She was raised with her brother and three sisters in Sioux City, Iowa, and in 1931 married Daniel Folan, also from Sioux City. They made their home in Iowa where Daniel, Mary Claire and Susanne were born.
Helen and Dan migrated to California in 1943 where Jeanne was born. In 1945 they decided to make a move to Washington state, and finally in 1947 settled on Vashon Island where the youngest, Margaret Cecile (Cissy), was born.
There Helen tended to her five children and large home and acreage at Cove where her love of gardening blossomed. She grew beautiful vegetables, fruits and flowers and oversaw the care of a variety of farm animals with the help of her children and her mother Aurore.
Helen and Dan started and operated their own business, Top of the Isle Real Estate, for a number of years. When Dan had a stroke, Helen decided it was time for them to retire and go look for new worlds.
In 1965 Helen and Dan first drove to Mexico. It was love at first sight. Each year they visited a new area and in 1968, after spending a winter in Manzanillo, they decided it was home.
They lived in a tiny house in a Mexican neighborhood for several years, becoming good friends with the Mexican families as well as other snow birds from the United States and Canada, and naturally, Helen had a gorgeous garden.
Dan passed away in 1977 and Helen returned to Seattle for a time, resuming her yearly Mexican visits after a few years.
Helen moved into the beautiful Roca del Mar in 1989 as a permanent resident where she made many lasting friendships. She lived with daughter Mary Claire for the past seven years. Daughter Jeanne with husband Nick Nelson bought a unit at Roca several years ago and live there for six months every year.
Helen loved people and loved life. She had a wonderful, infectious sense of adventure and indomitable spirit.
Mexico was her paradise, and she loved everything about it: the people, the food, the way of life, the place itself. She marveled at its beauty every day.
Survivors include her sister, Theresa Larsen, children Dan, Mary Claire, Jeanne and Cissy, 11 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Daughter Susanne died in October 2004.
A graveside memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. June 30, at the Vashon Island cemetery

Kimmel, George Friday, 02 Feb 2007
Vashon resident George Kimmel, 78, died Feb. 2, 2007, at his home in Cedarhurst. He was born on the Island on Sept. 23, 1928, to Garner and Clara Kimmel. He lived on Vashon Island for most of his life. He was a Boy Scout leader for many years, and in the summers during high school he served in the U.S. Forest Service.
After graduating from Vashon High School in 1946, George worked at Kimmel’s, his father’s grocery store, where Bloom’s & Things flower shop is now located. In 1953 he joined the Marine Corps and was stationed in Camp Pendleton in San Diego for two years. Upon moving back to Vashon, he married Sally Edson in 1955.
George was a familiar face to many as the mail carrier for 30 years on Route 1. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1988. His hobbies included working in the woods, helping people out with his 1942 army truck and doing yard work. He also enjoyed traveling and being with his family.
Survivors include his wife of 51 years, Sally, of Vashon, daughters JoAnne Kimmel Clausen and her husband, Jerry, of Seattle; Judith Kimmel-Ramirez and her husband, Arturo, of Guadalajara, Mexico, and son, John Kimmel and his wife Theresa of Ketchikan, Alaska. Additional survivors include six grandchildren: Sean, Joel and Kyle Clausen; Christopher and Katie Ramirez; and Kelsey Kimmel. His sister, Elsie Ibsen, of Puyallup, also survives him.
At his request, there will be no services. Memorials may be given to Providence Hospice, Vashon Heritage Association or Granny’s Attic. Vashon Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.
