Frazier, Donald Tuesday, 05 Feb 2002
Donald W. Frazier, engineer, 86
Donald W. Frazier, formerly of Vashon Island, died Feb. 5, 2002, of congestive heart failure. He was 86 years old.
Mr. Frazier was born May 22, 1915, to Clyde and Lela Gilbert Frazier. He married Olive York in Rantoul, Ill. on Dec. 26, 1941.
He graduated from high school in Portland and attended Lewis and Clark College and the University of Oregon. He received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics. He served in the Army’s medical corps in England during World War II.
He then worked as a mechanical engineer for Boeing for 17 years and then for Steel Structures in Eugene until retiring in 1974.
His interests included gardening and woodworking. He enjoyed playing the organ and the piano and spending time with his family.
Mr. Frazier was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Slidell, La., and the First Baptist Church in Eugene.
He lived in Portland, Seattle, Renton, Wash., and Huntsville, Ala., and Slidell before moving to Eugene.
Survivors include his wife, five daughters, Sharron Palmer, Bonnie Raume, Jacqueline Lorance and Elaine Ericksen, all of Vashon, and Diana Wahlman of Shingletown, Calif.; a son, Duane of Omak, Wash.; 14 grandchildren, and 10 great grandchildren. A granddaughter, Danielle Lorance, died earlier.
Services will be at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15, at Vashon First Presbyterian Church.

Howard, David Sunday, 03 Feb 2002
David Howard, chef, 37
David A. Howard died Feb. 3, 2002. He was 37 years old.
Mr. Howard was born April 12, 1964, to Harlan and Lyddia Howard in Coronado, Calif.
As the son of a Navy pilot, he and his family traveled throughout his younger years, finally settling in Los Angeles in 1976.
He called California his home until 1995 when he moved to Vashon Island to be closer to his parents, who had moved to Vashon in 1989.
On Vashon he met and married Karen on Aug. 24, 1995. They lived on the island and had two children, Grant A. and Madison L. Howard.
Friends recall he had a strong love of life and enjoyed traveling with his family, skiing with friends and had recently taken up one of his favorite pastimes, bowling. Wednesday nights with the guys were special to him, the family recalls.
Mr. Howard was fortunate enough to make one of his passions his career. He worked as an executive chef and one of his most pleasurable experiences was his time at the Vashon Golf & Country Club, his family says. He talked of it often and many times shared with his wife about the friendships he had made there and the closeness he felt to the community.
Survivors include his wife, Karen Howard, and his two children, Grant and Madison, his parents Harlan and Lyddia Howard, and sister-in-law Kirsten Lindskog and son Jordan Cross, all of Vashon. Survivors also include his sister Deborah Howard, brother Harlan Howard as well as grandmother Alice Stewart, all of California.
Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, at the Vashon Island Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Saint Judes Children’s Hospital and/or the American Cancer Society.

Gust, Norman Sunday, 03 Feb 2002
Norman A. Gust, agent, 82
Norman A. Gust died at his home in Lake Havasu, Ariz., on Feb. 3, 2002. He was 82 years old.
He was born on Sept. 19, 1919, in Bloomfield, Neb.
In 1937, when he was only 18, he accompanied his grandmother to Vashon Island from South Dakota. He became the ambassador for the rest of the family, who later migrated to the island to live and work in the Northwest.
It was on Vashon that he met his bride to be, Opal Fitchell. World War II came along and Mr. Gust went into the Army and served his country both at home and abroad. He served until Oct. 23, 1945.
Prior to his discharge, he married Opal on March 18, 1945. Their 56 plus years brought them much happiness, friends say.
Mr. Gust was employed in the plywood industry in his early life and later became an agent with State Farm Insurance in Beaverton, Ore. He made his niche as an agent until his retirement in 1984. In 1990, they chose Lake Havusu City to be their retirement city of residence. He was a member of Community Presbyterian Church in Lake Havasu.
Survivors include his wife, Opal, and three children: Douglas Gust of Milwaukee, Wis; Sharyn Larson of Lake Havasu City and Charlene Arnett of Medford, Ore., a foster daughter Dianne Johnson of Princeville, Ore., six grandchildren and two great grandchildren; brother Earl and his wife Peggy of Banning, Calif.; three sisters, Lola Nass of Seattle, Ellen Chapman of Lake Havasu City, and Janice Tanberg of Sparks, Nev. Many cousins, nieces and nephews also survive.
A sister Betty Larson died earlier.
There was a celebration of his life Feb. 8, in Lake Havasu City. Graveside services will be at a later date at the Vashon Island cemetery.
The family respectfully requests donations be made to Hospice of Havasu.
Arrangements were made by Lake Havasu Mortuary.

Therkelsen, Max O. Friday, 01 Feb 2002
Max O. Therkelsen, 82
Max O. Therkelsen, formerly from Vashon Island, died Feb. 1, 2002. He was 82 years old.
He was born May 6, 1919, in Sedro Woolley, Wash., to Hazel and Otto Therkelsen.
The family returned to Vashon in 1920 where they settled at Center, so like his father, Max grew up on Vashon Island.
He married Dorothy Rolando on Sept. 3, 1939, and they had one daughter, Janice.
The couple divorced in 1947 and shortly after, Mr. Therkelsen moved to Alaska where he worked as a heavy equipment operator for the Navy in the Aleutian Islands. He later moved to Kodiak where he operated the taxi service, and a restaurant. He married Winifred Pond on May 20, 1957.
Max and Winifred retired to Oak Harbor Washington in the 1960s and later settled in Bellingham where they lived until his death .
Survivors include his wife Winifred, daughter and son-in-law Janice and Tom McCasland of Evergreen, Co., stepchildren LaVella Nelson of Bellingham, Wanda Kramer of Northway Alaska, Virgil and Barbara Pond of Georgia, and Vernon and Ann Pond of Oklahoma; sister and brother-in-law Marie and Gus Lillquist of Vashon Island, brother and sister-in-law Robert and Kay Therkelsen of Vashon Island, and brother-in-law Howard Willsie of Maple Valley.
Other survivors include 22 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
He was interred Feb. 11 with a private service on Vashon Island.

Antonich, Beverly Jane Thursday, 31 Jan 2002
Beverly Jane Antonich, volunteer, 77
Beverly Jane Antonich of Vashon died Jan. 31, 2002 in her home. She was 77 years old.
Mrs. Antonich was born in Seattle Feb. 13, 1924, to Clifford and Lydia Crowder.
Ernest and Beverly Antonich made their first home in Lake Forest Park and moved to Vashon in the early 1960s and lived in the Bethel Park area.
After Mr. Antonich died in 1976, Mrs. Antonich moved to Vashon Heights.
During the last months of her life she was cared for by Nancy and Paul Wallrof of Vashon.
Mrs. Antonich was an active member of Saint John Vianney Catholic Church.
She was also a member of the Grange and a member of Vashon Community Care Center Guild.
Mrs. Antonich requested no flowers, but remembrances can be make to Vashon Island Pet Protectors.
A rosary for Beverly Antonich will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, followed by a Mass at Saint John Vianney at 11 a.m.
Burial will be at the Vashon cemetery followed by a luncheon in the church hall.
Arrangements were entrusted to Island Funeral Service.

Erickson, Rudolph Friday, 11 Jan 2002
Rudolph “Rudy” Alexander Erickson, formerly of Vashon, died Jan. 11, 2002. He was 93 years old.
He was born July 5, 1908, in Kenosha, Wisc.
He attended high school in Kenosha, where in 1927 he joined the engineering staff of a local radio station.
Over a period of years, he worked for stations in the central states. He eventually became a staff member of KIRO.
For 16 years, previous to retirement in 1974, he was employed on the engineering staff of KOMO. He lived and worked on Vashon during that time. He was a member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers for more than 60 years.
His wife, Emma, died earlier.
Survivors include a son, Gene Erickson and his wife Delores, and daughter Shirley Bullock and her husband Bob, and grandchildren Scott and Dale Moore, Dan Erickson, Sally Byard, Jeannie Eggelraten and Gail Rolfe, and 12 great grandchildren.
Services were held on Jan. 26 at the Bleitz Funeral Home.

Whitlock, John Saturday, 07 Sep 2002
John Moore Whitlock died Sept. 7, 2002, on the island of Kauai, while visiting his son. He was 70 years old.
He was born in Peking, China, Feb. 20, 1932, and lived there until he was 8 years old. He lived in Nebraska until his graduation from the University of Nebraska with a degree in chemical engineering.
Married in 1952, he and his wife, Ina, recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary with their five children, spouses, and 12 grandchildren.
Mr. Whitlock worked for Exxon in New Jersey, living in Newark and Cranford, before going overseas with his family to live in Venezuela, Aruba, Australia, and Norway. He also worked in New York City while residing in Sharon, Conn. He and Ina first settled on Vashon in 1960 when he worked a few years for Boeing. On his retirement in 1985, they returned to Vashon.
John was active on the island in the Vashon-Maury Community Council, working on the Vashon-Maury Overflight Committee for noise abatement. He was a steward of Wingehaven Park, a member of Great Books, a sponsor of Futures for Children and Bahai street, and a member of the Breakfast Boys. Last year he began the IONS Vashon community group of the Institute of Noetic Sciences and was active in promoting the Earth Charter.
Mr. Whitlock is the son of Edna Moore and H.H. (Doc/Whit) Whitlock, residents of Vashon for many years until their deaths.
Survivors include his wife, Ina Yount Whitlock, son Ned and his wife Marta Ramirez and grandchildren, Esha and Cy of Kauai, and Meg Davis, Clarksville, Tenn., and Ben Whitlock, Charleston, S.C.; daughters Nora and Edward Mullen of Sharon, Ct., and their daughters Janell and Larissa; Hallie and Trond Digernes and their children Johannes and Louise of Trondheim, Norway; Sharla and George Kaufman, and twins Michael and Isabel of Port Chester, N.Y.; and Shelly and John Affolter and their children Niki and Paddy of Vashon, and his sister, Sara and brother-in-law, Robert Lawson, also of Vashon.
There will be a private family memorial.
All who knew him are cordially invited to attend a gathering of friends and family from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 22, at Ober Park.

Ellingsen, Richard Sunday, 01 Sep 2002
Richard L. Ellingsen died on Sunday afternoon, Sept. 1, 2002, due to complications from lung cancer. He was 65 years old.
He was born on Vashon Island to Alfred and Engvarda Ellingsen Dec. 23, 1936, and was the youngest of five children.
He attended Columbia Elementary on the west side of Vashon near Cove, where he grew up. He graduated from Vashon High School in 1955.
He was very involved with his Norwegian family. While in high school, he went with his father on a large fishing boat to Alaska during the summer months. Growing up on a farm and working in the strawberry fields taught him many early disciplines of life.
He married Sharon L. Holert in 1957 and had four children. He worked for “Ma Bell” telephone company in Seattle and then with Vashon Auto Freight.
Richard and Sharon divorced in 1977. He then started working for Acme Inter-City Freight in Seattle and moved to Aberdeen, Wash. He met Peggy K. Knauf, and married her July 31, 1983.
In 1997 he became employed by ABF Freight in Tacoma where he worked until his retirement in January 2001.
His mother, Engvarda Lokke Ellingsen; father, Alfred O. Ellingsen; brother, Karl Ellingson; nephew Doug Ellingsen; and grandson, Michael L. Ellingsen, all died earlier.
Survivors include his wife Peggy Ellingsen; sisters, Marie Sundberg, Bea Beal and Louella Wales; children: Sally Ellingsen, Ken Ellingsen, Curtis Ellingsen, Charlene Hallstaff, Carl Knauf, Amy Bouge and Rick Knauf, and an extensive family of nieces, nephews and in-laws.
Besides his family and friends, friends and family recall he enjoyed many activities such as camping in the Olympic Mountains, flying kites at the ocean, tinkering with his tractors and tools, and working in his large garden of vegetables, dahlias and gladiolas.
He enjoyed his farm animals: dogs, cows, pigs and chickens. He always enjoyed experiencing new things.
Friends and family say he will be missed by many and that his spirit and so many memories will live on in his loved one’s hearts.
