Landaker, Ellen Jean Saturday, 20 Mar 2004
Ellen Jean Landaker, age 83, died March 20 at Messenger House Care Center on Bainbridge Island.
She was born Feb. 11, 1921, in Everett, Mich., the daughter of Bruce and Muriel (Shannon) Cass.
After graduation from Everett High School she married George Henry “Bus” Landaker. They moved to Portland in 1943.
She was a homemaker and ceramist. She raised four children and many of her grandchildren.
In 2000 she moved to the Kingston area to be near two of her daughters.
She is survived by one son, Lester Bruce “Butch” Landaker, North Plains, Ore.; three daughters, Brenda Joyce Townsend of Poulsbo, Sally Louise Sullivan of Kingston, and Nancy Lee Lind of Boring, Ore.; four brothers, Richard Cass, Harold Cass, Paul Cass, Dwayne Cass, all of Everett, Mich.; two sisters, Donna Scroggins, Portland, Ore.; Dorothy Tryon, Everett, Mich.; 12 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
A private family service will be held at Willamette National cemetery.
Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Kass Funeral Home, Bainbridge Island.

Merker, Mary Adeline Friday, 19 Mar 2004
Bainbridge resident Mary Adeline Merker, age 83, died March 19 at Messenger House Care Center on Bainbridge Island.
She was born March 29, 1920 in East St. Louis, Ill., the daughter of Alfred and Nellie Mae (Humphries) Jordan.
She graduated from Bloom Township High School in Chicago Heights, Ill., and married George E. Merker, Jr. in Portland, Ore., on March 5, 1943.
They settled in the Chicago area after the war and remained there until they moved to Bloomington, Ill., in 1960 where they lived until Mr. Merker’s death in 1976.
In 1977, Mary moved to Issaquah and then lived in Bellevue and Kirkland, until moving to Bainbridge Island in 1995.
During her work career she was employed as an executive secretary at H.D. Fowler Co. in Bellevue; Biddle Advertising in Bloomington, Ill.; Illinois State University, mathematics department in Normal, Ill.; and at the Bloomington Normal Airport Authority.
Prior to the birth of her son, she worked as an executive secretary for the Legal Department of the Illinois Agricultural Association in Chicago where she met her husband. She was chair of the U.S. Power Squadrons Women’s Auxiliary, District 20.
She is survived by one son, George E. Merker and his wife Mary Brzezinski-Merker, their daughter Emily, all of Bainbridge Island; one brother, Harry Jordan, of Hondo, Texas, and a sister, Helen Swanson, of Asheville, N.C. She was preceded in death by one brother, Alfred, one sister, Ruth, and her parents.
Inurnment will be April 8 at Park Hill cemetery in Bloomington, Ill. In lieu of flowers, tax-deductible contributions should be made in her memory to Research to Prevent Blindness, www.rpbusa.org.
Arrangements are under the direction of Kass Funeral Home.

Calvin, Monte D. Friday, 19 Mar 2004
Monte D. Calvin, age 60, of Bainbridge Island, died March 19 in California.
He was born Jan. 22, 1944 in Topeka, Kan., to David and Muriel Calvin.
He married Darnella Guy on June 8, 1974 in Augusta, Kan. He earned both bachelor’s and master’s degrees in economics from Wichita State University.
He enjoyed music and gardening, and was an avid reader.
At the time of his death, he was first vice-president of WM Shareholder Services Inc., WM Advisors Inc. and WM Funds Distributor Inc., and first vice-president of the WM Group of Funds.
He is survived by his wife, Darnella; daughter Jennifer of Redmond; brothers Lyle Calvin of Corvallis, Ore., Dean Calvin of Broomfield, Colo., Max Calvin of Tucson, Ariz.; and sister Kay Hawk of Burlington, Iowa.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Don Calvin.
Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. April 24 at Port Madison Lutheran Church on Bainbridge Island. A memorial has been established with Bainbridge Island Library.
Interment will be in Elmwood cemetery, August, Kan., with arrangements under the direction of Cochran Mortuary of Wichita.

McFadden, Austin ‘Barney’ Wednesday, 23 Jun 2004
Austin “Barney” McFadden of Kingston died June 23 in Poulsbo. He was 82.
McFadden was born to Austin P. and Nora (O’Grady) McFadden in Worcester, Mass. on April 18, 1922, and graduated from St. Peter’s High School in Worcester, Mass.
He married Helen D. Rukosky on Dec. 11, 1943 in Brooklyn, N.Y. He served in the U.S. Navy for seven years, achieving the rank of pharmacist’s mate first class. He then worked in pharmaceutical sales for more than 30 years until his retirement in 1980.
He was a member of the Exchange Club, American Legion and the 76ers Golf Club in Michigan City, Ind.
A service was held June 24 at the Stone Chapel in Poulsbo.

Huney, George ‘Judd’ Saturday, 19 Jun 2004
George “Judd” Huney, 91, a long-time Bainbridge Island resident, died on June 19, at home surrounded by his family.
Judd was born on March 5, 1913, in Rochester, Minn., to Minnie J. and George Huney.
During World War II, he worked in Alaska as a butcher, and then served in the Merchant Marines.
He sailed on transport ships that carried supplies and troops.
In 1945, he and his wife Alice moved to Bainbridge Island and opened their first grocery store at Pleasant Beach.
It was just after the war and goods were in short supply. They did $38 in sales on the first day, despite having only potatoes and corn flakes in stock.
In 1947 they bought the Lynwood Grocery Store (now Walt’s Market). That year, Judd became a charter member of the newly formed Rotary Club of Bainbridge Island.
In 1961 they sold their grocery business, and started coin-operated dry cleaning businesses on Bainbridge and in Poulsbo.
In 1963, Judd went to work as a meat cutter for John and Mo Nakata at Thriftway, and worked there until his retirement in 1978.
Judd was president of the Bainbridge Island Chamber of Commerce in 1952, and as president he helped break ground for the Winslow ferry terminal.
He was also an original member of the Bainbridge Committee, the only social service agency on Bainbridge Island in 1948. The committee gathered small amounts of money and spread the gifts they could buy among people who needed them.
He served on the Bainbridge Committee board from the first meeting in 1947 until 1978, when he retired. The committee continues to serve the Bainbridge Island community with food vouchers and temporary help with rent and utilities.
He was on hand for the first Rotary Auction on Aug. 13, 1960, and never missed one. The first auction was held at the old Winslow shipyard, with all proceeds totaling $5, 663.15, which went to the new Bainbridge Public Library.
He loved to drive up the bid on auctioned items, sometimes bringing home unexpected purchases like water skis or a pickup truck.
Over the years, he built many pieces of outdoor furniture in his garage carpentry shop to contribute to the auction.
He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Alice; daughters JoAnne Huney, Judy Kutz (Jim), and Suzan Huney (Earl Krause); grandsons Mark Frohnauer, and Daniel, Nathan and Davi Kutz; granddaughters Cara Huney-Krause, Jee Young and Jee Sook Kutz; and six great-grandchildren.
His four sisters proceeded him in death.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Bainbridge Committee (through the Bainbridge Foundation, P.O. Box 10354, Bainbridge Island, WA 98110) or to the Bainbridge Island Rotary Club’s Judd Huney Fund, a special fund created for large community projects (P.O. Box 11286, Bainbridge Island).
Also, on June 26, at the 44th annual Rotary Auction and Rummage Sale at Woodward Middle School, islanders can make a bid in Judd’s memory and support the Rotary Club of which he was so proud.
A celebration of Judd’s life will be held at 2 p.m. June 27 at Rolling Bay Presbyterian Church.

Maizels, Samuel J. Saturday, 19 Jun 2004
Samuel J. Maizels, 93, died in Seattle on June 19.
Born in Warsaw, Poland, he grew up in Portland and Salem, Ore. and attended Oregon State College. He served as an officer in the Army Air Force during World War II. He was a manufacturers’ representative and was President of the International Pot and Kettle Club.
For 17 years, he and his wife Nettie owned the Island Bazaar in the Village Shopping Center on Bainbridge Island.
He resided in Seattle and on the Sandspit in north Bainbridge.
He is survived by Nettie, his wife of 69 years; his brother Arnold J. Maizels; his daughter Deborah, of Oakland, Calif.; his daughter Nancy Maizels and son-in-law, Alan Weiner, of Seattle and Bainbridge Island; his granddaughters Rebecca and Molly; and many nieces and nephews.
Donations in his name may be made to Medic One.

Brown, Erwin Dwayne ‘Bud’ Wednesday, 16 Jun 2004
Former Poulsbo resident Erwin Dwayne “Bud” Brown of Metolius, Ore. died June 16. He was 66.
Brown was born to Clausie and Dorothy (Hullinger) Brown in Yakima on May 18, 1938.
He married Janice Jedlicka on June 16, 1962 in Omaha, Neb.
Brown served in the U.S. Air Force. He lived in Poulsbo until about five years ago, when he moved to Madras, Ore.
He was employed as a systems analyst for Johnson Control Company.
He was very involved in Little League Baseball and was the former president of the North Kitsap Babe Ruth League, coaching baseball for 20 years.
He also enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Brown is survived by his wife Janice of Metolius, Ore.; son Paul Brown of Madras, Ore.; daughter Wendy Harned of Forest Grove, Ore.; brothers Ruebin and Russell Brown, both of Yakima, and Dwayne Brown of Seattle; and three grandchildren.
A private family service will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of Bel-Air Colonial Funeral Home in Madras, Ore.
Memorial donations may be made to the Babe Ruth Little League Association of Poulsbo.

Ford, Robert M. Wednesday, 09 Jun 2004
Robert M. Ford, 93, former state legislator from Kitsap County in the 1940s, and King County commissioner during the World’s Fair in Seattle in 1962, died June 9 at Island Health and Rehabili­tation Center.
He was born May 2, 1911, in New Rochelle, N.Y., to Robert M. and Irma (Snider) Ford. His family moved to California in the mid-1920s, where he graduated from Glendale High School.
He be­­came a sales manager for Farmers Insurance Group, and transferred to the Pacific Northwest in 1931. He met and married Nancy McFate of South Colby in 1932; she preceded him in death in 1976. He married Mary Helen Settle of Olympia on Nov. 5, 1978; she preceded him in death in July 2003.
He enlisted in the Navy in 1942 and served on minesweepers in the North Atlantic and Mediterranean, participating in the invasion of Salerno.
After the war, he sold his Farmers Insurance agency in Bremerton and moved to a houseboat in Portage Bay in Seattle, where he attended the University of Washington and earned degrees in political science and economics.
He resided on Bainbridge Island in 1952-53, and returned to the island in February.
He served as executive secretary of the Washington State Veterinary Medical Association, executive secretary of the Washington State Nursing Home Association, King County commissioner during the 1962 World’s Fair, manager of Boeing Field, city manager of Ocean Shores, and on the Washington State Board of Tax Appeals.
He had a love of the water and especially enjoyed sailing. He enjoyed daily walks wherever he lived, as long as he was able. He also enjoyed community theater, and he and his wife Nancy were involved at the beginning of Bremerton Community Theater in the 1940s.
He was also a member of the Maritime Society, the Democratic party, Bremerton Community Theatre, Toastmasters, Lion’s Club, Associated Arts of Ocean Shores, Friends of the Library and the World Affairs Council.
He is survived by son Robert M. Ford III of Starkville, Miss.; daughter Linda Cauthers of Bainbridge Island; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and five stepchildren: Ben Settle, John Settle, Sarah Frederick, Ellen (Jenni) Rue and Mary Reid, and their families.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Ed and John Ford, and two sisters, Dorothy Tripp and Janie Brown, and a granddaughter, Judith Ford.
At his request, there will be no services. Arrangements are by Bleitz Funeral Home. His ashes will be scattered in Puget Sound.

Elfendahl, William P. ‘Bill’ Monday, 07 Jun 2004
William P. “Bill” Elfendahl, 89, Boeing engineer, one of REI’s founders, mountaineer, skier, sailor and scout leader, died June 7 in Seattle following a stroke.
Born Nov. 30, 1914 in Alameda, Calif., to Gertrude Baxter, a Christian Science practitioner and Preston H. Elfendahl, a forester, he graduated from Garfield High School in 1931 and earned an engineering degree at the Uni­versity of Washington in 1936.
He was employed by Boeing from 1936-1979, first as a draftsman in “The Red Barn.” He helped design the hydrodynamics of the Boeing Clipper seaplane, which was hauled out and weighed at the Winslow Marine Railway, and set up the B-17 production line in World War II. He was on the Stratocruiser’s maiden flight; directed flight test instrumentation and research labs; helped design the 707 and 747; and was Supervisors’ Club president.
Active with The Mountaineers, he led climbs, built lodges, shared family camping and served on the Mountain Rescue Council. He taught climbing at Olympic College and on Green Mountain.
An editor of Alpine Club’s “Climber’s Guide to the Cascade and Olympic Mountains of Washington, ” he yodeled from many Northwest summits and on the first ascent of the west peak of Mount Johannesberg in the North Cascades in 1949.
Before chair lifts and rope tows, he skied remote valleys. One by Mount Rainier became Crystal Mountain Resort. He helped design its trails and skied there with his family until age 85; he carried REI card No. 16!
He received the Boy Scout’s Silver Beaver Award for service to youth and sponsored the first minority members in The Mountaineers and Seattle’s Corinthian Yacht Club, where he was commodore in 1968.
When mountains steepened, he took to sailing. He was a student mentor, hospital volunteer, Lake Burien Presbyterian Church Elder, Shriner, and Elk’s Club member. At Kent’s Pediatric Interim Care Center, he comforted drug-addicted babies.
He was preceded in death by Florence, his first wife of 34 years; his brother, Major; and grandson, Charles, Bainbridge High School Class of 1980.
He is survived by Sarah, his wife of 25 years; two sons, Gerald W. (Judie), Bainbridge Is. and Lawrence E. (Mary Ann), Kingston; stepson Dick Christianson (Mary), San Diego; stepdaughter, Chris (Mike) Moss, Anderson Is; seven grandchildren including Erika (BHS ‘84) (Phil, BHS ‘84) Biggs, Bainbridge Island, and Kirsten (BHS ‘86) (Edan) Zeballoon of Shoreline; and eight great-grandchildren. Remembrance: KPICC, NW Kidney Centers or a charity of the donor’s choice.
