Jacobsen, Bernice M. Sunday, 30 May 2004
Bernice M. Jacobsen, 85 of Dilworth, Minn., died May 30 at her home.
She was born Bernice Margaret Swan on Oct. 13, 1918 in Callaway, Minn., to John and Sophia (St. Clair) Swan. She grew up in White Earth where she attended school at the White Earth Mission School. She later attended a women’s college in Hastings, Kan.
She moved back to Minnesota after attending college and worked at Round Lake as a housekeeper.
She married Walter Jacobsen at Snohomish, Wash., in 1942. They moved to Bainbridge Island, and she worked as a cook on the state ferries for 28 years.
Bernice and Walter were honored when the home they shared on Bainbridge was placed on the island’s Historical Register. In 1974, they returned to the Strawberry Lake area in rural Ogema, Minn.
Walter died in 1982, and Bernice moved to Dilworth in 1988.
She was a past member of the Detroit Lakes VFW Auxiliary and was a Bronze Star Mother. She enjoyed square dancing, spending time with her family, gardening, playing bingo and playing cards.
She is survived by two daughters, Beverly (Larry) Power of Tacoma, and Sharon (Paat) Kennelly of Detroit Lakes, Minn.; sons Herb Jacobsen of Baldwin, Mich., and David Jacobsen; and seven grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Walter, in 1982; one son, Ken Jacobsen in 1967, during the Vietnam era; her grandson, Gabe; one sister, Grace Roberts; and five brothers, Lewis, Lawrence, Maynard, James, and Richard.
A gathering will be held June 5 at the Kennelly residence near Detroit Lakes, Minn. Interment is at the Strawberry Lake Mennonite cemetery. Arrangements are by David-Donehower Funeral Home of Detroit Lakes.

Weis, Arthur A. Thursday, 27 May 2004
Former Bainbridge Island resident Arthur A. Weis, 92, of Spokane, died May 27.
He was born March 27, 1912, in Uniontown, Wash., to Anna and John Weis, and was their 10th child.
He grew up in Uniontown, and attended Gonzaga University and the University of Washington.
He joined the Army Corps of Engineers, Seattle District, in 1937 and came up through the ranks to retire as executive assistant after 33 years of service.
He lived on Bainbridge Island, for 45 years, from 1955-2000, and became a master gardener and builder. His Bainbridge Island property was named Idle Weis in his honor.
He is survived by his wife, Duetta, children John and Sandi Weis and Janae and Larry Harrington, of Spokane; and six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Cordon, Jr., Alfred Call Saturday, 22 May 2004
Former Bainbridge Island resident Alfred Call Cordon, Jr. died May 22. He was 86.
He was born Oct. 7, 1917 in Rigby, Ida., to Rose and Alfred Cordon, Sr. He had four sisters, Maxine, Julie, Rose and Beverly.
He enlisted in the military during World War II, serving in the Air Force Reserve. He was a Radio Operator and Mechanic AAF, in the Asiatic Pacific Theatre of Operations with the 317th Troop Carrier Squadron.
While he was serving his country, his father spotted his son’s future wife at a singing concert and arranged for the two of them to correspond by mail. They met and married after Al returned home from the service.
They lived briefly in Pocatello, Ida., where Al graduated from college, then moved to Washington, D.C.
Al attended George Washington University Law School, where his father had also attended school.
He developed a successful law practice in Washington, D.C., representing radio and televisions stations before the Federal Communications Commission.
He was active in Kiwanis and the Arthritis Foundation, and he served as chancellor of the Delta Theta Phi law fraternity. Through these activities he developed a number of lifelong friendships.
He and LaVonne lived in Chevy Chase, Potomac, and then the Eastern Shore of Maryland.
In the early 1990s they moved to Bainbridge Island to be close to their daughter.
While living on Bainbridge, Al was active in a number of community organizations, including Bainbridge Rotary.
In 2001, he and LaVonne moved to Queen Anne in Seattle to share a home with their daughter and son-in-law.
Because of his larger-than-life personality, he was selected master of ceremonies at many family gatherings, including his mother-in-law Emma’s 100th birthday and his daughter’s marriage in 1999.
He is survived by his wife of 58 years, LaVonne (Horsley); a daughter, Claire Cordon, and a son-in-law, Michael Caryl; and sisters Julie and Rose, of Boise, Idaho, and Beverly (Calvin) Hill, of Pocatello, Ida.
The family will hold an open house to celebrate Al’s life on Saturday June 19.

Cornell, Myrtle Sarin Wednesday, 19 May 2004
Former Bainbridge Island resident Myrtle Sarin Cornell, age 100, died May 19 in Seattle.
She was born Nov. 3, 1903, in Port Blakely to Johan Herman Sarin and Hilda Sarin, and grew up with three brothers in the Eagledale home built by her father. She rowed her boat across Eagle Harbor to attend high school, swam in Puget Sound near her home, and walked to Port Blakely Presbyterian Church to play the pump organ and teach classes.
She served as a substitute teacher while still a high school student. She began her professional career at age 18 at the McDonald School in Eagledale, and taught for many years on Bainbridge Island, in Aberdeen, and in northeastern California.
She was a member of Kappa Delta Gamma, the honorary society for women educators.
A lifelong student, she attended Western Washington University, the University of Washington and California State University, Chico, where she completed her degree requirements and postgraduate study.
She and her husband, Elmore Cornell, shared a love for the outdoors with children and grandchildren; long weekend hikes, canoeing, swimming and camping were important family activities.
Upon retirement, she returned to Bainbridge Island to live once again in the Eagledale family home. She and her husband enjoyed gardening, trips in their travel trailer to Arizona and scenic West Coast areas, and the visits of family and friends. She was a member of the Bainbridge Island Historical Society.
She is survived by son Charles Cornell, of Walnut Creek, Calif.; granddaughters Clarice Cornell and Kimberly Cornell of Santa Barbara, Calif.; granddaughter Karen Cornell (Albert Treskin), and grandchildren Kaylie and Alexander Treskin of Oakland, Calif.; daughter Jane Cornell of Seattle; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her husband.
Services will be held at a later date; burial will be at Port Blakely cemetery.
The family thanked the staff of Crista Senior Community Nursing Center for their care; remembrances may be sent to the center at 19303 Fremont Avenue North, Seattle, WA 98133-9803.

Langohr-Droge, R. Eileen Thursday, 29 Jul 2004
R. Eileen Langohr-Droge, 87, died July 29 at Island Health and Rehabilitation Center.
Born in October, 1916, in East Chicago, Ind., She lived in Chicago and Evanston, Ill., until moving to Bainbridge Island 25 years ago.
She was a real estate agent, most recently with Marie Gallagher and Associates.
She is survived by her husband Dolf, sister Sarah Nystrom, daughter Marlene LeMire, son Marshall Langohr, grandsons Marshall Jr. and Harrison Joseph Langohr, and stepchildren Martha Droge, David Droge and his wife Maureen Droge and their four children.
A memorial service will be announced in the near future.

Holt, Anne Friday, 23 Jul 2004
Anne Holt, 79, died July 23 at her home on Bainbridge Island after a brief illness.
Born Anne Trumbull Corbet in Seattle on July 24, 1925, she was the daughter of prominent Seattle businessman Darrah Corbet and Katherine Trumbull Corbet.
She attended St. Nicholas School in Seattle and earned a bachelor of arts degree from Smith College.
In 1950 she married Seattle attorney Irving Clark, Jr., with whom she had five children. He died in 1978.
In 1986 she married Seattle surgeon Brantley Holt, Jr.
She was a patron of the arts in Seattle and was active in civic and charitable affairs, serving as board president of the Seattle Children’s Home and the Junior League, as well as program director of the downtown YWCA.
Later in life she returned to school to earn an associate’s degree in landscape design from Seattle Community College and became a certified nurseryman.
She had her own landscape design business, Agate Nursery, for many years and was active on the local and national gardening scene.
Her waterfront garden on Bainbridge Island hosted numerous garden tours and was the subject of several national garden magazine articles.
She was a recipient of the national Mrs. Oakleigh Thorne Medal for Garden Design from the Garden Club of America.
She was a founding member of Grace Episcopal Church on Bainbridge Island, as well as a member of the Colonial Dames of America and the Sunset Club.
She is survived by her husband Brantley Holt Jr.; children Corbet Clark of Beaverton, Ore., Lucy Snow of Point Richmond, Calif., Trip Clark of Nevada City, Calif., and Bruce Clark and Tom Clark, both of Seattle; and five grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Aug. 14 at Grace Episcopal Church, Bainbridge Island.
Memorial gifts may be made to the church, the Bainbridge Island Land Trust, the Seattle Arboretum Foundation or the Hardy Fern Foundation.

White, Charles B. Sunday, 04 Jul 2004
Longtime Bainbridge Island resident Charles B. White, age 85, died July 4 at Island Health and Rehabilitation with his family in attendance.
He was born Dec. 17, 1918, in Oakland, Calif. to William and Inez Parker White.
Services were held July 10 at Bethany Lutheran Church.
Remembrances in his name may be made to Bainbridge Medic Emergency, 8895 Madison Ave., or his favorite charity, Marine Toys-for-Tots Foundation, P.O. Box 227, Quantico, VA 22134.
Arrangements are by Kass Funeral Home.

Hutchison, Greg J. Saturday, 10 Jul 2004
Greg John Hutchison, age 43, of Bainbridge Island, died July 10 from injuries suffered in an accidental fall while vacationing abroad.
He was born March 31, 1961, in New Zealand to James Robert Hutchison and Raima Crowthers of Bainbridge Island.
He is survived by his wife Tammy Lazzara-Hutchison and two children, Holly and Brian, a brother Chris and sister Elisa, both of New Zealand.
A celebration of life will be held at 3 p.m. July 20 at Bainbridge Island Church, 9624 Sportsman Club Rd. Donations can be made to Island Church for a benefit fund for his family.

Seko, Roy G. Sunday, 04 Jul 2004
Former Bainbridge Island resident Roy Seko, founder of Bush Garden Restaurant in Seattle’s International District, died July 4 at the age of 75.
He was born on Oct. 25, 1928, in Seattle, and attended Cascade Grade School.
During World War II, the Seko family was relocated to Minidoka, in Hunt, Idaho and later to Tule Lake, California. His father, Kachi Seko was sent to a special camp with Italians and Germans, because authorities thought he was a spy.
After the end of the war and returning to Seattle, Roy Seko graduated from Bainbridge High School in 1947. He attended the University of Washington, majoring in Architecture and Far East Studies and joined the US Army in 1950.
He was trained at the Counter Intelligence Corp School (CIC) and the next year was sent overseas to Camp Drake in Japan.
In 1953, Kachi Seko started the Bush Garden Restaurant in the Bush Hotel, and Roy helped him while he had his own business, Bush Artcraft.
Three years later, when he became engaged to Joan Tomiko, his father asked them if they would be interested in going into partnership in a new location for the restaurant at 614 Maynard Ave. South.
Roy and Joan agreed, and purchased the properties where the restaurant was to be built.
They held their wedding reception at the new Bush Garden right after it was completed. They lived on the third floor of the restaurant for 10 years, and raised three children.
Seko opened two more restaurants with partners, one in Portland, Ore., and the other in San Francisco, Calif.
After the death of Kaichi, the Seko family moved to Bellevue to live with mother Suye Seko.
The family sold the restaurants in Portland and San Francisco, and continued their efforts in Seattle Bush Garden until they sold their properties in 1996.
Seko then worked with Masaharu Sakata of Bush Catering, an airline food service business, which prepared food for Japan Airlines, Northwest Airlines, United Airlines and Thai Airlines.
Tomio Moriguchi, the CEO of Uwajimaya and Seko had been friends for 60 years. “We will miss Seko slowly but surely for a long time, ” Moriguchi said.
In addition to his wife Joan Tomiko Seko, he is survived by daughters, Kristi Shimada, Lauree Seko, Ann Haas and sons Gregg and Mark.
A memorial service was held July 9 at Seattle Buddhist Church.
