Henshaw, James Frederick Tuesday, 18 Jul 2006
Lifelong Bainbridge Island resident Capt. James Frederick Henshaw, 85, died July 18 surrounded by his family.
He was born July 4, 1921, in Winslow, the youngest son of Capt. Ward and Margie Henshaw. He attended Bainbridge High School, where he lettered in football, basketball and track.
He worked in the Winslow Shipyard after graduation, but his dream was to become a sailor.
He met his future wife, Rosalie “Mickey” Morgan, in 1942, when she was visiting friends on the island. They were married in 1944. Five days later, he joined the U.S. Navy. He was assigned to Seattle, where he worked as a tugboat captain.
Henshaw continued his tuboat career, moving to Foss Tug and Barge after the war. He continued as captain at Foss until 1959 when he joined his brother, Capt Bill Henshaw, as a Puget Sound pilot. He retired in 1986.
He was an avid sports fan, enjoying high school football and basketball as well the Huskies, Seahawks and Mariners. He and his wife enjoyed golf and were early members of Wing Point Golf and Country Club.
They both loved to travel and in retirement visited Europe, Australia and South America.
He was a dedicated walker and was often seen making his rounds through Winslow with his golf-putter cane and a ready smile.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Bill and Jack and sister Margaret Ann Potter.
He is survived by Rosalie, his wife of 62 years; sons Dan (Carolyn) of Brisbane, Australia, Ron (Kristine) and Bill of Seattle and Brian (Lindy) of Poulsbo; daughter Patti of Long Beach, Calif.; grandchildren Valerie, Heidi, Nicole, Michelle, Bree, James and Robby; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. July 25 at Eagle Harbor Congregational Church in Winslow. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Eagle Harbor Congregational Church, the Bainbridge Island Historical Society or the Poulsbo Fire Department Medic Unit.
Arrangements are by Kass and Cook Family Funeral Home.

Smith, Phoebe M. Monday, 10 Jul 2006
Phoebe M. Smith, 97, of Bainbridge Island, died July 10 at her home.
She was born July 12, 1908, in Seattle to Edith Emiily Spafford Cook and Charles Cook.
She taught in Winlock, Wash., as a young woman, and at View Ridge Elementary in Seattle for more than 20 years, beginning in 1953. She set up the religious education department for University Unitarian Church in the 1940s and was its first director.
She helped organize the Senior Center on Bainbridge Island, and was very active there for many years. Her piano was her solace and her constant companion. She accompanied choirs wherever she went, organized choral groups, wrote operettas and directed their performances on Bainbridge, including “Calamity at Four Corners.”
She also wrote poetry, journals and articles, and in her later years was a contributing columnist for the Senior Center paper, the Bugle.
She wrote two books, “Eighty Candles” and “Glimpses of Bainbridge, ” and started an exercise class for nonagenarians.
She loved the sea, having sailed the Pampero up the Inside Passage and down to Mexico with her husband, Chesley.
They lived at the Queen City Yacht Club for a number of years aboard the “Phoebe M, ” a powerboat that had her piano on it.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Chesley A. Smith; her two sisters, Dorothy Jeanne Cook and Carla Iman; and a grandson, Brett Newell.
She is survived by Sylvia Chesley Smith, Susan Newell and Jennifer Ditmars; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 1 p.m. July 29 at the Bainbridge Island Senior Center.

Ebel, Lois E. Friday, 14 Jul 2006
Longtime island resident Lois E. Ebel, 92, died July 14.
She worked on the Kalakala ferry. She was a professional musician who played the organ in many Seattle clubs. She also played the pipe organ in the capitol building in Olympia.
She owned and managed several businesses and retired from a government job in Seattle. She enjoyed her garden and friends on the island.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Charles and Darlene Somers; two grandsons and two great-grandsons.
Memorial donations may be sent to the Bainbridge Fire Department.

Kerrigan, Patricia K. Wednesday, 12 Jul 2006
Patricia K. Kerrigan, 59, of Bainbridge Island died July 12 in Bremerton.
Services are pending, with arrangements by Kass & Cook Family Funeral Home.
Caplan, Laurel Wednesday, 12 Jul 2006
Former Bainbridge Island resident Laurel Caplan, 73, died July 12 in Oceanside, Calif., after a long battle with breast cancer.
She was born in Chicago and raised in Los Angeles. She attended UC Berkeley, UCLA and CSU Dominguez Hills, where she earned a master’s degree in gerontology.
She moved to Bainbridge in 1989, becoming the executive director of the Madison Avenue Retirement Center. She was president of the Chamber of Commerce and a member of the Bainbridge Economic Council.
She is survived by Milton Caplan, her husband of 49 years; sons Brian and Ken; and four grandchildren.

Smith, Caroline Helen Tuesday, 11 Jul 2006
Former Bainbridge Island resident Caroline Helen Smith, 81, died peacefully July 11 at her home in Poulsbo.
She was born Sept. 23, 1924, in Joplin, Mo., to William Jennings and Helen Bergstrom, immigrants from Sweden who settled in Fletcher Bay. She grew up on Bainbridge Island, attended the Pleasant Beach Grade School and graduated from Bainbridge High School in 1943.
She worked for Pacific Northwest Telephone until retirement in 1975. She then moved to Bremerton and Poulsbo in 2002. She enjoyed being withher family, red roses, traveling to Reno, dancing and her poodle, Smokey.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Cecil P. Michels, and her sister, Florence Hoffman.
She is survived by daughters Carol (Walt) Ball and Susan (Bob) Jellicoe of Bainbridge Island, Nancy Michels of Brownsville and Peggy (Joe) Graham of Silverdale; son Patrick of Poulsbo; brother Kenneth Bergstrom of Shoreline; 10 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. July 15 at Hillcrest cemetery on Old Mill Road on Bainbridge Island. A gathering of friends and family will follow at 2 p.m. at her home in Poulsbo. Arrangements are by Kass & Cook Family Funeral Home.

Benson, Lyla Jeanette Monday, 03 Jul 2006
Lyla Jeanette (Carlson) Benson, 81, died July 3 at Martha and Mary in Poulsbo, surrounded by her family.
She was born April 5, 1925, on a farm in North Dakota near the town of Dahlen, the fourth child of nine to Bessie and Christian Carlson.
She graduated from Mayville Teacher’s College in 1942 and taught in a one-room schoolhouse for two years.
She then moved to Bremerton, Wash., and worked at Benson’s Variety Store, where she met and married the store owner’s son, Milton Benson, who was serving in the Merchant Marines.
Milt and Lyla settled in the Mount Baker district in Seattle where they raised five children. Lyla was active at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Seattle and also worked at Cleo’s Apparel.
They moved to Bainbridge in 1989, living next door to two of their daughters, Linda and Patty. Lyla was active at Bethany Lutheran and also volunteered at Wilkes Elementery School.
In 1991, Lyla suffered a stroke and her husband cared for her at home until she was moved to a nursing home in 2001.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Milton Benson; daughters Janice (David) Johanson of Maryland, Linda (Jeffrey) Sievertson of Kingston and Patricia (Darrell) Mihara of Kingston; sons Ray Benson (Su Ross) of Covington, Wash., and Daniel (Sally) Benson of Berkeley, Calif.; grandchildren Jennifer Johanson, Scott Johanson, Courtney Sievertson, Christian Sievertson, Megan Mihara, Mallory Mihara, Tyler Benson, Elliot Benson, Lina Benson and Lara Benson; and great-granddaughter Selby Johanson-Tubbs.
Memorial services will be at 4 p.m. July 8 at Bethany Lutheran Church on Bainbridge Island.

Browne, Chelsea Henry George Tuesday, 27 Jun 2006
Chelsea Henry George Browne, 88, died June 27 in Seattle.
He was born March 27, 1918, in Gran­tham, England. After spending his youth in Belfast, Northern Ire­land, he moved to California at the age of 16.
He attended Oregon State College, where he received a degree in forestry and met his wife, Beverly Winston. He spent college summers as a forest lookout in the Cascades of Oregon.
He joined the U.S. Army Air Corps in World War II. As a B-24 bombardier, he flew five missions before being shot down over Austria. He was held in German prison camps for eight months.
Living in Eugene, Ore., he established a career in the lumber business and, along with Beverly, raised four children.
His career led him to Portland and Bainbridge Island, where he lived with his second wife, Deanie.
He retired to San Juan Island, where he started two small businesses. He eventually returned to Bainbridge Island and the Seattle area.
He had a lifelong interest in art and served as president of the University of Oregon Friends of the Museum. He also was a talented artist in his own right.
He enjoyed the outdoors as a hunter, fisherman and boater. He loved his dogs and he loved the birds who visited his home.
He is survived by Beverly Browne of Winston, Ore.; his children, Chelsea J. Browne of Portland, Cheryl Weese of Winston, Ore., David Browne of Bainbridge Island and Eric Browne of Seattle and their families; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
At his request, there will be no services. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to PAWS of Bainbridge Island, P.O. Box 10811, Bainbridge Island, WA 98110.

Dr. Peter Joseph MICHELS
Born in Great Falls, Montana on Mar. 29, 1922
Died on Dec. 1, 2001 and resided in Allyn, WA.
Dr. PETER JOSEPH MICHELS, 79, of Allyn, Washington and a long time Enumclaw dentist, died December 1, 2001 in a Seattle hospital.
He was born in Great Falls Montana on March 29, 2001. He served with the U.S. Army Air Force during WWII. Peter was a Doctor of Dentistry and had a practice for many years in Enumclaw, Washington. 29 years ago he acquired a home in Allyn, Washington (on the Washington peninsula) and moved there permanently after his retirement.
Peter is survived by his 3 sons, William (Bill) of San Lorenzo, CA, Ronald of Allyn, WA and Robert of Haywood, CA.

Charles (Chuck) M. PEARSON
Born in North Hampton, Massachusetts on Jan. 4, 1940
Died on Dec. 5, 2001 and resided in Seattle, WA.
Charles Monosmith PEARSON
January 4, 1940 - December 5, 2001
Charles (Chuck) Pearson died peacefully in his home surrounded by his loving family after a courageous 16 month battle with pancreatic cancer. Chuck was born in Northampton, Massachusetts, fourth child of six in a well-educated and culturally enriched family. He spent his youth in Amherst, Massachusetts and attended the Stockbridge School in the Berkshire Mountains. He graduated from Cornell University, Ithaca, New York in May, 1964 with a M.S. in Mechanical Engineering. He was recruited by the Boeing Company and began his 37-year career in August 1964. The majority of his career at Boeing was spent as a Propulsion Staff Engineer. In recent years he worked as a Field Service Representative and enjoyed many foreign assignments. In his spare time he indulged his love of hiking and camping, marathon running, skiing, and coaching his son's soccer team. He enjoyed working with his hands, researching and solving problems, and mentoring.
He is lovingly survived by his wife, Elizabet; daughter, Katherine; stepson, Larry Ames and his wife Roberta; stepson Erik Ames and his wife Carrie, their daughter, Hannah of Seattle, Washington. He is also survived by his father, Oscar of Portsmouth, Rhode Island; his three brothers, Robert, Portland, Oregon; David, Warwick, Rhode Island; and George, Lancaster, California; and his two sisters, Anne Proctor, Portsmouth, Rhode Island and Sandra Shlapak, Chatsworth, California and many nieces and nephews. His son, Michael Harris Pearson and mother, Helen Monosmith Pearson, precede him in death.
Memorial contributions can be sent to The Swedish Tumor Institute, Swedish Hospital, Seattle, Washington. Please specify that donations be used for prevention and early detection of pancreatic cancer.
Memorial services 4:30 PM Friday, December 14, 2001, at the East Shore Unitarian Church in Bellevue (click the services link above for service details, map and directions).

Died on Nov. 29, 2001 and resided in Seattle, WA.

ALOFA U. FETUI died November 29, 2001 at her residence in Seattle.
She was born in Alao, American Samoa on October 21, 1936 where she grew up and attended school. She had lived in the Seattle area for the past 33 years. Alofa worked as a seamstress in the clothing industry for many years.
Alofa is survived by her father Valaile Fuiava (Village of Aunuu) and her mother Alofa Puaauli(Village of Alao); her brother Fogtiaoalii Valaile (San Diego, CA) and numerous half brothers and sisters; her sons Galuafa Fetui, Uliuli Fetui, Jr. and Lia V. Fetio (Ann. Crisostomo) all of Seattle, WA; her daughters Iuni Kellum (Robert) of Jacksonville, NC and Siniva Wellington (Richard) of Seattle, WA. She also leaves 15 grandchildren.
Alofa was preceded in death by her husband Uliuli M. Feui (Village of Tau, Manua) and her brother Pale Valaile of Seattle, WA.
