Laird, Charles ‘Charlie’ Monday, 10 Jan 2005
Charles “Charlie” Laird died Jan. 10 at his home on Bainbridge Island.
He was born Feb. 18, 1908, and spent much of his life in Eugene, Ore., where he was in business in the Eugene-Springfield for over 40 years. Gray’s Seed and Feed, later called Gray’s Seed and Garden, kept him actively involved until his eighties.
He and his wife Evelyn moved to Bainbridge in 1991. He was known for his warmth, entertaining stories and sense of humor.
He is survived by his children Tom of Fairborn, Ohio, Charles of Seattle, Michael of San Francisco, Calif., and Anne of Bainbridge Island, and their families.
He was preceded in death by his wife Mary and his wife Evelyn.
Family will welcome friends and neighbors to his home at 1 p.m. Jan. 16 for a lunch buffet, reflections and stories. For directions, call 842-0151.

Gilbert, Elizabeth F. Friday, 17 Dec 2004
Elizabeth F. “Bettie” Gilbert, 81, died peacefully Dec. 17 at her home on Bainbridge Island.
She was born Dec. 31, 1922 in Providence, R.I., the oldest of five children to Arthur and Helen Frazier.
She graduated with honors from Chester High School in Chester, Mass., and then attended the Rhode Island School of Design in Providence.
While there, she had a radio show called “Bettie Buyer” in which she advised folks on cooking and grocery shopping during World War II.
She was married to architect Daniel C.C. Gilbert in 1944 and they and lived in New York City and Scar­borough, N.Y.
While raising a family, she bought and sold antiques and eventually opened the Flintlock Farm Antique shop in Briarcliff Manor, N.Y.
In 1971 she moved her family to Henniker, N.H., and bought and operated the Colby Hill Inn for five years before becoming the switchboard operator at Concord Hospital.
In 1989 she moved to Albuquerque, N.M., where she worked at New Mexico’s Technical Vocational Institute, assisting hearing and visually impaired students with taking notes during class.
She retired in December 2003, and in 2004 she moved to Bainbridge Island.
Beginning at a very young age she wrote award-winning poetry and fiction. She was a fine painter, sketcher and wood carver. She enjoyed helping others, especially children, bird watching, and walking on the beach.
She also enjoyed traveling, visiting Scotland and other parts of the world.
She is survived by her brother Richard Frazier of Coventry R.I.; sister Marion McNiff of Warwick, R.I.; son Daniel F.F. Gilbert of Wilmot, N.H.; daughter Tina H.C. Gilbert of Bainbridge Island; grandson Aiden Gilbert of Henniker, N.H.; granddaughter, Claire Koutras of Keene, N.H.; and many nieces, nephews and surrogate children.
She was preceded in death by her husband, her son Arthur Gilbert of Concord N.H., and brothers Jack Frazier and Wesley Frazier, both of Providence, R.I.

Aguilar, Michael Darryl Tuesday, 04 Jan 2005
Michael Darryl Aguilar, president of the resident council at Messenger House Care Center, died Jan. 4. He was 36.
He fought a life-long battle with the effects of spina bifida with courage, optimism and love of others.
He was born in Newport Beach, Calif. on July 21, 1968 and moved to Bainbridge Island in 1994 to be near his family.
He enjoyed sports, particularly baseball, as well as music and animals.
He is survived by his mother and stepfather, Cynthia and Pat Logan, his father, Henry Aguilar of Pasadena, Calif. and brother and sisters, Henry, Sabrina, Anna and Karen.
A memorial service for family and friends will be held at 1 p.m. today at St. Barnabas Episcopal Church. Donations can be made to the Spina Bifida Association of America (www.sbaa.org).

Francis, Iona Nevada Wednesday, 15 Dec 2004
Iona Nevada Francis, 87, of Bainbridge Island, died Dec. 15 at Harrison Hospital in Bremerton.
She was born May 3, 1917, in Long Pines, Neb. She married Homer “Dick” Francis in Seattle in 1948.
The couple moved to Bainbridge Island in the early 1950s, and Iona drove a taxi on the island for a period. She was also a homemaker, and enjoyed crafts.
She was a long-time member of Eagle Harbor Congregational Church and the American Legion Auxiliary.
She was also a member of the Bainbridge Island Senior Community Center, and started the thrift shop there.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 2001.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Jan. 9 at Eagle Harbor Congregational Church, with inurnment in Montana. Memorials can be made to the American Legion, 7880 Bucklin Hill Road, Bainbridge Island, WA 98110.

Caro, Virginia L. Thursday, 02 Feb 2006
Former Bainbridge Island resident Virginia L. Caro, 77, died Feb. 2 at Olympic Medical Center in Port Angeles.
She was born Feb. 5, 1928, in Oakland, Calif., to Arthur Emil Hansin Eide and Laura Matilda (Aaberg) Eide.
She lived in Seattle and many cities throughout Alaska, from Nome to Juneau, eventually marrying and settling in Kenai to raise her family.
She sang in the choir of the Methodist Church and the Kenai Peninsula Chorale. She was also a charter member of the Peninsula Concert Association and the Peninsula Homemaker’s club.
In 1972 the family bought a boat and traveled through Canada to Seattle and then to Bainbridge Island, were they lived for 11 years.
In 1984, Virginia and husband Luke moved to Sequim.
She had many interests, including reading, gardening, classical music, swimming, traveling and photography. She spent many enjoyable hours taking prize-winning pictures of flowers and outdoor scenes around the area and making afghans and other crocheted items for loved ones and charitable causes.
She enjoyed the mountains and beaches of the Northwest.
She is survived by her children: sons Nick Miller of Kenai, Alaska, Terry Miller of Anchorage, Alaska, and Andy Caro of Bainbridge Island; daughters Kathi Reynolds of Fairbanks, Alaska, Merri Gascon of Beaux Bridge, La., and Elizabeth Feller of Everett, Wash.; 10 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Luke Caro, and one great-grandson.
Services were Feb. 18 in Sequim. Memorial donations may be sent to Trinity United Methodist Church, Building Fund, P.O. Box 3697, Sequim, WA 98382.

Fields, Sr., Martin Frederick Wednesday, 15 Feb 2006
Martin Frederick “Marty” Fields, Sr., 68, of Bainbridge Island, died Feb. 15 surrounded by his family after a fight with cancer.
He was born born icon Aug. 9, 1937, in Stockton, Calif., to Joseph and Mildred (Ferrall) Fields. He was raised in a large family with six brothers and one sister.
He served four years in the Navy as an engineman third class and four years in the Naval Reserve. He served aboard the USS Grapple and the USS Karin before receiving an honorable discharge in 1962.
He married Mary Ritter in 1959 and later moved to Oregon.
They had five children: Martin F. (Beverly) Fields, Jr. of Washington, D.C., Rita (Ed) Holmes of Albany, Ore., Rhonda (Ralph) Underwood of Albany, Ore., Richard (Beverly) Fields of South Carolina, and Pamela (James) Israel of Vancouver, Wash.
He worked as a truck driver for years and owned and operated his own trucking company for several of those years.
He was preceded in death by his wife Mary, his parents, four brothers and his sister.
In 1986 he moved to Bainbridge Island, where he met Anna Tripp. They were married in 1990, and he added two stepchildren to his growing family, Sandra Morrell (Pete) of Portland, Ore., and David Tripp (Julie Lohrer) of Bainbridge Island.
During this time he worked for the Country Club of Seattle on Bainbridge Island. He was a member of the American Legion Post 172. He enjoyed family and friends, fishing, the Seattle Mariners and Seahawks, cooking and playing guitar and organ.
After his retirement he discovered a love for traveling and he and Anna made several trips to Germany to visit her family near Munich. He also went snorkeling in Bermuda.
He was a surrogate father and grandfather to many children. Together, he and Anna have 22 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
He is also survived by one brother, Dennis Fields of Washington.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Feb. 25 at the American Legion Hall Post 172 on Bucklin Hill Road. Donations may be made to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital, P.O. Box 50, Memphis, TN 38101.

Settle, Ann E. Friday, 10 Feb 2006
Poulsbo resident Ann E. Settle died Feb. 10. She was 87.
Settle was born to Thomas Kepner and Felicia M. Curnow Kepner in Reno, Nev. on March 25, 1918.
She graduated from Reno High School in 1936 and Hartnell Junior College in Salinas, Calif. in 1938. She married Wesley L. Settle June 3, 1938 in Salinas, Calif.
She was a piano and voice teacher and taught in the North Kitsap area for many years. She also played and sang at funerals and many civic events and was a housewife and mother.
She was a member of Priscilla Chapter No. 96, Order of the Eastern Star of Port Gamble, PEO and Daughters of the Nile. She also attended both the North Kitsap Baptist Church and Vinland Lutheran Church.
She is survived by sons Tom (Billie Jo) Settle and Glenn Settle of Poulsbo; daughter Sylvia (Al) Johnson of Tilamook, Ore.; 10 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Wesley Settle, and a brother and two sisters.
Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Feb. 15 at Vinland Lutheran Church in Poulsbo. Memorial gifts may be sent to Music Programs at North Kitsap Baptist Church, 20516 Little Valley Road NE, Poulsbo, WA 98370 or Vinland Lutheran Church, 2750 NW Finn Hill Road, Poulsbo, WA 98370.

McCune, Alfred R. Saturday, 11 Feb 2006
Alfred R. McCune, 86, of Bainbridge Island, died Feb. 11 after a battle with Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma.
He was born Nov. 17, 1919 and grew up in the farmlands of Benton, Kan., as the oldest of eight boys. He was a soldier, serving in the Army Air Corps during World War II. Upon his return from the war, he worked for Boeing for more than 40 years.
He and his wife Zetha made their first home on their farm in Haysville, Kan., and in 1968 moved to Everett, Wash.
He served in various positions at the Cascade View Presbyterian Church in Everett.
His hobbies included woodworking, house building and gardening. He spent many hours working on the homes of his daughter and son, besides remodeling his own homes.
He was an avid gardener who dug up his dahlias every year and then replanted them for a showy display.
For the past three years, he lived with his daughter Regina and her family in their guest house here on Bainbridge Island.
He is survived by daughter Rebecca McCune, Seattle; daughter and son-in-law Regina and Paul Gurtler and grandson Travis Gurtler, all of Bainbridge; grandson Bryant Gurtler, Vancouver, Wash.; and son Gary McCune and daughter-in-law Sherri McCune, Lake Tapps, Wash.
Memorial services will be at 11 a.m. Feb. 17 at Cascade View Presbyterian Church in Everett. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Cascade View Presbyterian Church or the American Cancer Society.

Fleming, Ruby P. Thursday, 02 Feb 2006
Ruby P. Fleming, 88, died Feb. 2 at Messenger House Care Center on Bainbridge Island.
She was born Oct. 30, 1917, in Kansas. She married Ivan Fleming, and they were together for 62 years, living in Aberdeen, Wash., for many years.
After her husband died, she moved to Bainbridge Island to be closer to her family.
She is survived by her daughter, Sharon McMillian, of Bainbridge Island; her brother, Roy Smith, of Keizer, Ore.; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Private services are planned, with arrangements by Kass & Cook Family Funeral Home on Bainbridge Island.

Rusher, Karen Ann Saturday, 04 Feb 2006
Former Bainbridge Island resident Karen Ann Rusher, 60, died Feb. 4 in Puyallup.
She was born June 5, 1945, in Omaha, Neb., to Pete and Geneva Bevans. After graduating from Benson High School in Omaha, she moved to Alaska to work for the Forest Service and there met her husband, Robert C. Rusher.
Robert’s job with an airline took them to Federal Way, Wash., then to Cannon Falls, Minn., where they tried their hand at farming and raising horses. After a brief period in Utah, they lived on Bainbridge Island from 1983 to 1993, where their children graduated from high school.
They later settled in Buckley, Wash., where Karen volunteered in community services. She served as director at the Buckley Food Bank for a number of years and was active in Kiwanis and the Ida Marge Guild of the Tacoma Orthopedic Association. She enjoyed traveling, bowling and spending time with family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband and brother.
She is survived by her daughter, Barbara, son Robert (Jenn) and grandson Jack.
Viewing was on Feb. 8 at Week’s Funeral Home in Buckley. A memorial service was held on Feb. 9 at the Community Presbyterian Church of Buckley. A celebration of life was held on Feb. 10 at the Buckley Eagles Hall. Interment will be Feb. 12 at Agency cemetery in Agency, Iowa.
Memorials may be made to the Buckley Food Bank, P.O. Box 29, Buckley, WA 98321.
