Norrix, Bonnie Virginia Saturday, 11 Mar 2006
Bonnie Virginia Norrix, 64, died March 11 at Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle.
She was a native of Seattle.
She and her husband moved to Bainbridge Island upon their retirement. She pursued her love of gardening and quilting and was an advocate for animal welfare and the environment.
She is survived by her husband, Loy G. Norrix, of Bainbridge Island; son Steven Cordell and his wife, Lisa, of Seattle; siblings Denise Day of Seattle and Mickey Adair of Reno, Nev.; and grandchildren Cole, Adrienne and Paige of Seattle.
A memorial reception will be from 2-5 p.m. May 6 at the family home on Bainbridge Island. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of choice.
Arrangements are by Kass & Cook Family Funeral Home.

Campbell, Irvin Wednesday, 15 Mar 2006
Irvin Campbell, 87, died March 15 in Seattle.
He was born March 5, 1919, in Hamburg, Germany.
He moved to England in 1939 from Germany and married Gwen Dyason-Wood in the early 1940s. During World War II, he served in the British Army as an electrical engineer and was in the Middle East campaign.
The couple moved to the U.S. after the war.
In 1970, he was remarried to Georgia Campbell, a schoolteacher. They moved to the Hillsboro area near Portland, Ore. where they lived for 30 years and owned a little restaurant there called the Sunset Humdinger.
Georgia died in December 2004, and in January 2005, he moved to Bainbridge Island to be closer to his daughters.
He enjoyed playing golf and bridge.
He is survived by his ex-wife and friend Gwen Dyason-Wood of Edmonds; his daughters Linda Campbell and her husband Brian Chambers and Gail Campbell, all of Bainbridge Island, and Lesley Wellmaker of California; grandchildren Robin Wellmaker and Richard (Carolyn) Wellmaker of California and Nicholas Campbell of Bainbridge Island; and great-grandchildren Brandon and Megan Wellmaker of California.
A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. April 2 at the Madison Avenue Retirement Center in Winslow, where he was a resident. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.
Arrangements are by Acacia Funeral Home.

Bennett, Nancy Ruth Hockett Friday, 10 Mar 2006
Nancy Ruth Hockett Bennett, 84, died March 10.
She was born on March 8, 1922, in Des Moines, Iowa, to Stephen and Bertha Hockett. She attended elementary and high school in Des Moines and the University of Iowa in Iowa City.
In 1941, she married Chester G. Bennett. They moved to Phoenix, Ariz. in 1952 where they lived for nearly 40 years.
Shortly before moving to Phoenix, Nancy contracted polio and for the remainder of her adult life walked with the aid of a brace and cane. Friends and family often remarked, “The polio never slowed her down.”
Besides raising her five children, she had many interests. As a member and president of the Heard Museum Guild, she enjoyed studying and sharing her knowledge of Arizona and Southwest Native American culture.
She had a love of nature and the Arizona Desert Botanical Garden was one of her favorite spots. She was an avid reader, talented writer and storyteller.
Her other interests included astronomy, geology, history, animals, jazz music, gourmet cooking, gardening, golf and travel.
In 1990, she and her husband moved to Bainbridge Island, where for the last 15 years they enjoyed spending time with their children and grandchildren.
During her lifetime, she wrote numerous poems, short stories and one novel for both family and pleasure. She was also a volunteer at the Bloedel Reserve.
She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Chester; children Claudia (Lynn) Divelbess, Suzanne Cary, Joanne (Ray) Moudy, Ken (Susan) Bennett, Carolyn (Mark) Greer; grandchildren Rob (Rachel) Divelbess, Ken (Gelila) Divelbess, Shannon (Chris) Schneider, Chad (Dayna) Cary, Matt (Kelly) Cary, Brian Moudy, Andrew (Jill) Decker, Hayes Greer and Eli Bennett; and great-grandchildren Xander, Ashlyn and Yordanos.
Donations may be made to Grace Episcopal Church, Bainbridge Island.

McDowell, Elsie Magnuson Wednesday, 08 Mar 2006
Elsie Magnuson Backland McDowell, 88, died March 8.
She was born Nov. 7, 1917 to August and Marie Magnuson at Swedish Hospital in Seattle. She was the oldest sister to her brothers John and Roland Magnuson.
She graduated from Burien High School and earned her RN from the Swedish Hospital of Nursing in 1940.
She founded and directed her own medical placement bureau in Seattle from 1941-51. She also served as a nurse in the U.S. Naval Reserves from 1944-1946. She earned a BSN from the University of Washington in 1953.
On May 27, 1953, she married Capt. John Backland of Seattle and they had two children, John and Nellie Maria. During that time, the Backlands made their home on Bainbridge Island where she lived for more than 50 years.
She was active in the Bainbridge Island Pony and Saddle clubs, Northwest Hydrofoil Lines, the Arboretum, Children’s Hospital, Seattle Historical Society and First Covenant Church.
In March 1961, she was widowed. She returned to the workforce in 1973 as an RN at the Winslow Convalescent Center and office nurse in Poulsbo.
In 1982, she married Lt. Col. Tom McDowell. During their marriage of 20 years, they traveled the world seeing Mexico, South America, Europe, Russia and Australia. In 2002, she was once again widowed.
She is survived by her son John (Kym) Backland of Bainbridge Island; her daughter Nellie (Elliott) Ohannes of Queen Anne in Seattle; and grandchildren Alexander and John Samuel Ohannes.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. April 1 at Bethany Lutheran Church on Bainbridge Island.

Ainslie, Katherine Sunday, 26 Feb 2006
Katherine Ainslie, 52, died Feb. 26 at her home in Lofall.
She was born Sept. 1, 1953, in Arlington, Va., to Emily and Robert Ainslie. She was raised mostly in South Orange, N.J., where she graduated high school.
She became a dedicated student of transcendental meditation and actively pursued advanced education in the discipline in both New York and California.
In 1976, she moved to Bainbridge Island, where she met Baker Stocking and married him in 1980.
While living here she pursued further spiritual studies with the Church of Divine Man in Seattle, where she became an ordained minister and a teacher.
During the mid-1980s, she taught classes in meditation and spiritual healing in her home on Marrowstone Island.
She also became a spiritual counselor, sought out by many throughout the remainder of her life.
She loved children and animals and was a committed advocate for both. She also enjoyed gardening, cooking and art, as well as boating and camping with her husband.
She is survived by her husband and his family, and her five siblings and their families: sisters Ann (Jay) Kaczmarowski of Mechanicsburg, Pa., and Jean (Bill) Richardson of Scituate, Mass.; brothers Malcolm and Andrew Ainslie, both of South Orange, N.J., and Bob (Mary) Ainslie of Kingsport, Tenn.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. April 8 in the Log Hall at Kitsap Memorial Park, as part of an all-day gathering there, a celebration of life and spirit in her honor.
Donations may be sent to the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, www.nmss.org, or to her church, www.c-d-m.org.

Olsen, Jack Tuesday, 16 Jul 2002
Bainbridge Island resident and author Jack Olsen, age 77, died at his home July 16.
He was born June 7, 1925 in Indianapolis, Ind., to Rudolph and Florence (Drecksage) Olsen.
A former Time bureau chief, Olsen wrote for Vanity Fair, People, Paris Match, Readers Digest, Playboy, Life, Sports Illustrated, Fortune, the New York Times Book Review and others publications.
He was the author of 31 books published in 15 countries and 11 languages. His magazine journalism appears in 13 anthologies.
Olsen was called “the dean of true crime authors” by the Washington Post and the New York Daily News, and “the master of true crime” by the Detroit Free Press and Newsday.
He is survived by his mother, Florence Mae Olsen; his wife, Su Olsen, Bainbridge Island; three sons, John R. (Diane) Olsen, Niwot, Colo., Evan Olsen, Little Rock, Ark., and Harper Olsen, Seattle; four daughters, Susan (Rich) Jetley, Boulder, Colo., Julia Olsen, Denver, Barrie (Frank) Olsen, New York City, N.Y., Emily Sara (Korum) Bischoff, Bainbridge Island; one sister, Carolyn Grentz, Havertown, Pa.; and seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by a son, Jonathon Rhodes Olsen.
Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. July 21 in the upper picnic area at Fort Ward State Park. A reception follows at the Island Music Teacher Guild on Madison Avenue.
Remembrances can be made to the Sierra Club, or to Helpline House of Bainbridge Island.
Arrangements are under the direction of Kass Funeral Home.

Mitchell, Glenn Saturday, 13 Jul 2002
Long-time Bainbridge Island resident Glenn Mitchell, age 79, died July 13.
He was born and raised in San Jose, Calif. He attended Heald College in San Francisco, and served in the Marine Corps in World War II in the South Pacific.
He lived with his wife Anne in Sausalito, Calif., for 15 years. During that time, he worked in engineering and also as an architectural photographer. His photos were published in House Beautiful, Sunset, the San Francisco Examiner and Chronicle, and many other publications.
He and his wife moved to Bainbridge Island with their children Amy and David in 1971. He worked in engineering until he retired in 1987.
The couple traveled extensively during his retirement, including a trip around the world. He enjoyed sailing and building boats, and also practiced shiatzu.
He is survived by his wife Anne; son David and daughter-in-law; Sasha Henry of Olympia; and daughter Amy and son-in-law, Dan Guptill of Rockland, Maine.

Rockwell, Noel Friday, 12 Jul 2002
Longtime island resident Noel Rockwell, age 87, died July 12 in Port Townsend.
He was born Dec. 30, 1914 in Seattle to Robert Rockwell and Bertha Sedore.
He moved to Bainbridge Island at age 13 and resided there until 2000, when he relocated to Quilcene.
From 1938-1947, he served in the U.S. Marine Corps as part of the Engineering Corp. He also spent three years at the University of Washington.
On Aug. 5, 2000 he married Mary Anne M. (Thiemann) Rockwell in Puyallup.
He enjoyed outdoor activities, especially hiking, canoeing and travel.
He was a member of the Methodist church, the USMC Engineers, the Mountaineers, and the Lions Club of Quilcene.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann, of Quilcene; son Winston Rockwell of Kirkland and numerous step-children and step-grandchildren.
Memorial services were held July 20 at Seabold Methodist Church. Remembrances may be made to the Nature Conservancy, 4245 N. Fairfax, Suite #100, Arlington, VA 22203-1606.

Christopherson, Donald H. Friday, 12 Jul 2002
Former Bainbridge resident Donald H. Christopherson, 73 of Bremerton, died July 12.
He was born Oct. 30, 1929, in Seattle to Henry and Ingeborg (Mae) Christopherson of Bainbridge Island.
In his early years, he played the saxophone in the band at Bainbridge High School and came in second in the state in a competition. His love of music continued throughout his lifetime, and he played in several bands.
He graduated from Bainbridge High, class of 1947, and went on to attend the University of Washington.
He was inducted into the Army in May 1952, leaving behind his wife Donna and two small children.
He transferred to the Army Reserve as a cook, and was discharged in 1956.
He became a certified public accountant, and worked at Group Health for 18 years, retiring due to health problems.
He enjoyed boating, fishing and woodworking in his retirement.
Survivors include his wife Donna; ex-wife Sonja; daughters Barbara Ann Miller and son-in-law Bruce, Lynn Brunner and son-in-law Donald, and Denise Christopherson; sons William and daughter-in-law Jo, and Dean and daughter-in-law Julia; and 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his brother Larry, daughter Sandra Lee Chew and granddaughter Zoe Ann Miller.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. July 18 at Olympic View Assembly of God in Silverdale. A reception follows at the Silverdale Park in Old Town Silverdale.
Arrangements are under the direction of Stone Chapel, with interment at Port Blakely cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Kitsap County or a cancer fund.
