Cogdell, John L. Thursday, 08 May 2003 Bainbridge Island Review Bainbridge Island, WA
Former island resident John L. Cogdell, age 51, died May 8 in Chewelah.
He was born Nov. 4, 1951 in Sunnyside to Billy Jo and Elanora Cogdell. He graduated from Bainbridge High School in 1969 and entered the Marine Corps.
From there, he went to Alaska for about 10 years during the fishing seasons, where he worked with his brother.
He and his family moved to Poulsbo, where he became a farrier. The family lived there eight years before moving to Chewelah.
He was employed at Northwest Alloys for 12 years before being hired at Wal-Mart in Colville.
He is survived by his partner in life, Maggie Tarble; his mother, Elanora Cogdell; his brother, Ronald Cogdell, and two sisters, Jennifer McCoy and Cindy Hetherington; his two sons, Ronald Cogdell and William Cogdell; two stepchildren, Sarah and David Tarble; grandsons Dustin and Austin Cogdell, and numerous other relatives.
He was preceded in death by his father, Billy Jo Cogdell.
A memorial service was held May 11 at the home of Dick and Jenny McCoy in Chewelah.

Salanga, Felomina Flores Madayag Wednesday, 07 May 2003 Bainbridge Island Review Bainbridge Island, WA
Bainbridge Island resident Felomina Flores Madayag Salanga, age 55, died May 7 at the University of Washington Medical Center, Seattle.
She was born Oct. 17, 1947 in Cuyapo, Nueva Ecija, The Philippines.
She came to Bainbridge Island in 1973 and married Toribio P. Madayag that fall. Mr. Madayag preceded her in death in 1981.
In 1984, she married Maurice Salanga, Sr. who died in 2001.
Felomina worked at Bainbridge Manufacturing and was a busy homemaker. She enjoyed being involved in the Filipino-American Community on the island as well as with St. Cecilia Catholic Church. She enjoyed gardening, cooking and sewing.
She is survived by two sons, Alex F. Madayag and Mark F. Salanga, both of Bainbridge Island; four brothers, Alvin A. Flores, of Bainbridge, Cornelio A. Flores of Manila, The Philippines, Romeo A. Flores of Cuyapo, The Philippines and Florentino A. Flores of Seattle; three sisters, Lydia A. Flores, Loreta A. Vong Flores and Elena A. Flores, all of Seattle; and numerous step-children, nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be 1-5 p.m. May 10 at Kass Funeral Home. The Rosary will be said at 6:30 p.m. May 11 at St. Cecilia Catholic Church. The Mass of Christian Burial will be 12 p.m. May 12 at St. Cecilia, with burial to follow at Seabold cemetery.
Remembrances can be made to the Filipino-American Community, P.O. Box 11163, Bainbridge Island, WA 98110.
Arrangements are under the direction of Kass Funeral Home, Bainbridge Island.

Konichek, D. Peter Thursday, 01 May 2003 Bainbridge Island Review Bainbridge Island, WA
D. Peter “Pete” Konichek, age 69, of Bainbridge Island, died May 1 after a fight with cancer.
Born Dec. 18, 1933 in Roanoke, Va., to Capt. D.H. Konichek, C.G.S.C., and Clara Berg Konichek, he spent his early years traveling the contiguous United States and Alaska with the military service of his father. He attended 47 primary schools and five high schools, graduating the first time at age 14, then again at age 15.
He attended North Carolina State, obtaining a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and another in physics, then continued his education at the University of Washington, earning advanced degrees in physics, nuclear engineering and nuclear physics.
In the summers before World War II, the family shipped to Alaska, where his father was in charge of surveying a great deal of the territory of what would become the 49th state. They lived in remote areas reached only by boat, camping in tents, and befriending the local native and Russian populations.
Later, during his career with Boeing Computer Services, he was deeply involved in the then-top secret computer design and development of the B-2 Stealth bomber.
A longtime member of the United States Sail and Power Squadron, he rose to the rank of Commander of the Agate Pass Sail and Power Squadron. He was an avid sailor and power boater.
His first love was learning, and he collected books on all subjects, acquiring a huge library on subjects, including military history, philosophy, science fiction and general history. He loved to teach.
He is survived by his son, Anthony “Tony” Konichek, of Seattle; and his longtime companion and “First Mate, ” Liz Murray of Bainbridge Island.
A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Brauer, Agnes Sunday, 27 Apr 2003 Bainbridge Island Review Bainbridge Island, WA
Agnes Brauer, age 92, longtime Bainbridge Island resident died April 27 in Seattle.
She was born Feb. 1, 1911 in West Seattle, daughter of Amund and Anna Andersen. She lived on Bainbridge Island since 1914, graduated from Bainbridge High School in 1929 and the University of Washington in 1936.
A longtime employee of the Department of Commerce in both Washington D.C. and Seattle, she retired in the early 1970s.
She was past matron of the Order of Eastern Star and treasurer of Port Madison Lutheran Church. She was president of the Rhododendron Society and involved in the University of Washington Arboretum. Her garden was a showcase of rare rhododendron species and hybrids.
She was also active in a large number of other organizations, including the Bainbridge Island Senior Center, Bainbridge Library, Sons of Norway, Boy Scouts, Rainbow Girls, the Bainbridge Island Coop and the Seattle Opera.
She is survived by daughter Denis Christensen of Des Moines; son Paul McCormick of Perth, Australia; and six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Karl Brauer.
Donations can be made to the Port Madison Lutheran Church, P.O. Box 4787, Rolling Bay, WA 98061 or the Senior Center.
A memorial service will be held at 1 pm. May 2 at Port Madison Lutheran Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Kass Funeral Home, Bainbridge Island.

Sewall, William D. Saturday, 26 Apr 2003 Bainbridge Island Review Bainbridge Island, WA
Former Bainbridge resident William D. Sewall, 83, of Bath, Maine, died April 26.
He was born in Bath, Maine, on Jan. 22, 1921, the son of Arthur and Laura Barler Sewall. He was educated at Choate School in Wallingford, Conn., and earned a degree in mechanical engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
He served in the United States military from September 1942 to February 1946. He was awarded two medals and several military citations.
He and his wife, the former Phebe Buckman, moved to Seattle in 1951, and to Bainbridge Island in 1956.
He worked as an accountant for Boeing and as a stock broker for Dominick & Dominick before owning and operating Western Tours, Inc.
While on Bainbridge, he co-founded the Port Madison Yacht Club. He was a lifelong Rotarian.
He retired in 1979 and returned to his family home, Stonehouse Farm, in Maine.
He devoted the remainder of his life to a variety of civic and philanthropic concerns.
His first project after returning to Bath was to help with fund-raising for the restoration of the steeple of the Winter Street Church.
He helped open the new Maine Maritime Museum; presided over and fund-raising for the Coastal Humane Society; was actively involved in the Bath Rotary; and delivered Meals on Wheels to senior citizens.
He also co-founded the Sewall Family Fund for the purpose of restoring and preserving Bath’s maritime history and artifacts. His favorite charities included the Coastal Humane Society, the Bath YMCA, the Maine Maritime Museum, the Patten Free Library and the city of Bath ambulance service.
He was preceded in death by his wife in 1993, and sister Mary Hyde, who died in 1990. He is survived by four daughters: Abbie Sewall of Yarmouth, Maine; Laura Sewall of Phippsburg, Maine; Gretchen Sewall and her husband Harry Laban of Edmonds, Washington; and Lee Sewall and her husband Mike McAleney of Cumberland, Maine; six grandchildren, Emma and Thatcher Sewall Shultz of Yarmouth, Maine; Emmett and Asher Laban of Edmonds, Wash.; Deehan and Elizabeth McAleney of Cumberland, Maine; and three nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held May 6 in at Grace Episcopal Church Bath, Maine. Memorial contributions can be made to the Sewall Family Fund, c/o Maine Maritime Museum, 243 Washington Street, Bath, Maine 04530.
Arrangements are by the David E. Desmond Funeral Service.

Russell, Florence “Tot” Wright Friday, 25 Apr 2003 Bainbridge Island Review Bainbridge Island, WA
Florence “Tot” Wright Russell died April 25 at her home in Horizon House in Seattle following an extended illness.
She was born Feb. 1, 1915, the fourth of six children of Elias Allen Wright and Mary Bailey Wright, longtime residents of Seattle.
After graduating from Broadway High School and the University of Washington, she married Donald M Russell.
The couple had two children, Barbara B. Russell of Bainbridge Island and John W. Russell of Portland. The family lived in Yakima, Bellevue and Portland while Don pursued his banking career, holding executive positions with several Northwest banking institutions. They lived on Bainbridge Island from 1973 until 1992.
She was an avid bridge player, golfer and lover of music. Over the years she pursued these interests and others as a member of Wing Point Golf and Country Club, Women’s University Club, Washington Athletic Club, Seattle Tennis Club, Seattle Milk Fund and PEO.
She was preceded in death by her husband Don in 1989, and by her sisters and brothers, Elizabeth Wright Evans, Judge Eugene A. Wright, Dorothy Kellerman, Mary Louise Adams and Wayne Wright.
She is survived by her children, Barbara and John; her daughter-in-law Mary Fellows; three grandchildren, Sarah M. Viele, John W. Viele and Mary Kate Fellows Russell; two step-grandchildren, Shannon Wight and Michael Wight; and two great-grandchildren, Elizabeth N.Viele and William R. Viele.
Services will be held at 10 a.m. May 17 at Horizon House. Graveside services will follow at 1 p.m. at Evergreen Washelli.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests remembrances be sent to the Horizon House Employee Fund in care of Horizon House, 900 University Street, Seattle, Washington 98101.

Mabee II, Douglass W. Friday, 19 Mar 2004 Bainbridge Island Review Bainbridge Island, WA
Douglass Williams Mabee, II, age 89, of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., died March 19 after a short illness.
He was born Oct. 12, 1914 in Troy, N.Y., to Douglass Walter and Edna Louise (Marvin) Mabee, and grew up in Saratoga Springs. He was a 1929 graduate of Fessenden, a 1933 graduate of Hotchkiss and a 1937 graduate of Yale, where he rowed on the No. 150 crew.
He served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Naval Reserve from 1943-45, aboard the USS Ira Jeffrey in the North Atlantic Convoy. The vessel was later converted to take on an underwater demolition team for the invasion of Japan. He served in the Pacific Theater Operations Forces Inner Japan Sea, Wakayama, as a member of DECO, the Destroyer Escort Commanding Officers.
He was married on July 27, 1940 to the former Prudence Brattle Mather.
He was a salesman for 25 years for National Folding Box, a family company that merged with Federal Paper Board Company, and was former vice president and director of the Adirondack Trust Company.
He was governor of Apawamis Golf Club, director of YMCA and United Way in Rye, N.Y., a founder of Stratton Mountain ski area in Vermont, a member of the Sons of the American Revolution and the Holland Society of New York.
He was most proud of his involvement as one of three general partners in the founding of Farm Neck Association and Farm Neck Golf Club, Martha’s Vineyard, Mass., organized to protect 600 acres from real estate development.
He and his wife enjoyed the Pacific Northwest and made frequent visits to Bainbridge Island.
Memorial services will be June 18 in Saratoga Springs. Contributions can be made to Saratoga Hospital or Christ Episcopal Church, Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
He is survived by son Douglass Mather Mabee, Saratoga Springs; daughters Martha Wells Mabee, Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla., and Maria Mabee Mason, Bainbridge Island; grandchildren Alexandra Fordyce Flowers, Jessica Francis Mabee, Douglass Timothy Mabee, Brittain Mather Mason and Adrian Allen Mason; great-grandson Ethan Mather Flowers; and niece, Adele “Dee” Clewley Park and nephew Lewis Monroe Smith.
He was preceded in death by his wife in 2001.
Arrangements are under the direction of Craig Funeral Home and Crematory.

Mapanao, Irene Charles Sunday, 09 Oct 2005 Bainbridge Island Review Bainbridge Island, WA
Irene Charles Mapanao, 84, of Bainbridge Island died Oct. 9 in Bremerton.
She was born May 4, 1921 in White Rock, B.C., Canada, to Bernard and Mamie (Wilcox) Charles. She married Isidro Mapanao on July 15, 1942, on Bainbridge Island.
She was a homemaker, and farmed strawberries and raspberries. A member of the Filipino American Community of Bainbridge Island, she enjoyed reading, knitting, gardening, crocheting, yodeling and singing.
She is survived by sons Ernesto Charles (Lori) Mapanao of Suquamish, and Bernardo Charles (Sallie) Mapanao of Poulsbo; daughter Bernadine Mapanao (Leon) Slesinski of Bainbridge Island; brothers Willard Charles, Jimmy Charles and Bernard Charles, and sisters Eleanor Chilstrom, Mabel Charles, Margaret Thomas, Barbara Calder and Virginia Charles; four grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband; son Ben C. Mapanao; brothers David Charles, Richard Charles; and sisters Mary Charles, Bernice Cook and Clara Campbell.
Viewing will be from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Oct. 14 at the Stone Chapel in Poulsbo. A second viewing at 10 a.m. Oct. 15 at St. Cecilia Catholic Church on Bainbridge Island, followed by the rosary at 10:30 a.m. and funeral mass at 11 a.m. Interment will be at Island Center cemetery on Bainbridge Island.
Memorial donations may be made to the Kitsap County Humane Society, 9167 Dickey Road NW, Silverdale, WA 98383.
Arrangements are by the Stone Chapel in Poulsbo.

Irwin, Dorothy Tuesday, 04 Oct 2005 Bainbridge Island Review Bainbridge Island, WA
Former longtime Bainbridge Island resident Dorothy Irwin, age 90, died Oct. 4 in Everett.
She was born June 3, 1915, in Salem, Ore., to Fredrick and Aimee Rosenburg.
She worked as a clothing designer and an art gallery manager. Her interests included playing scrabble, going to the theater and ballet. She was a member of the Episcopal Church.
She was preceded in death by her daughter Kathy Brown and her brother Son Rosenburg.
She is survived by her son Tom Irwin of Corvallis, Ore.; her sister Grace Cathey of Portland, Ore; her grandchildren, Aimee Brown of Snohomish and Spencer Irwin of Corvallis, Ore.
An inurnment service will be at 12:30 p.m. Oct. 23 at St. Barnabas church on Bainbridge Island.
Arrangements are by Purdy & Walters at Floral Hills Funeral Home, Lynnwood.
