VERNON FORENPOHAR SR.
Vernon Elroy Forenpohar Sr., 71, died in his home Nov. 14, 2006, after a long, hard fought battle against cancer. He was born in Roslyn on Jan. 29, 1935 to John and Margaret (Bannister) Forenpohar. In high school he was a tough guy, winning golden gloves for boxing three straight years, but as we all found later he was just a teddy bear in disguise.
After graduating from Cle Elum High School in 1953, he went to work for Pacific Northwest Bell, where he stayed with the exception of a two-year tour in the Army, retiring after 32 years with the phone company. After returning home from the Army where he proudly served and was honorably discharged, and back to Pacific Northwest Bell, he married Andrea McDonald in 1961. They made their home in Yakima and raised five children. Although they divorced in 1986, they remained close and I believe always loved each other.
Vern had several passions in life, and most of them he enjoyed until his last day. An avid outdoorsman, Vern could hunt and fish for days on end. If you didnt find him with a rifle or a pole in his hands, you might find him wearing a set of hooks climbing a pole 60 feet up changing light bulbs at a football field, or stringing Christmas lights in a parking lot. When Vern wasnt outside, he was probably under the hood of a truck repairing anything that might be broken, at the lathe turning a raw piece of metal into a no longer available part, or possibly on the end of a saw cutting lumber to build a new kitchen table. There was truly nothing Vern couldnt do, and do well.
At work he was Vern, the Pollock or thumbs, but at home he was always dad, and we will miss him. A devoted son, he returned to Cle Elum in 1990 to help his parents in their later years.
Vern was preceded in death by his father, John Forenpohar; wife, Andrea; and brother, Allen “Butch Forenpohar. He is survived by his mother, Margaret (Bannister) Forenpohar; sister, Marge (Howard) Bunger; brother, Jack (Joyce) Forenpohar; sons, John (Dian) Forenpohar, Vernon (Cathy) Forenpohar and Bruce (Laura) Forenpohar; daughters, Meghan (Brian) Nunley and Meloney Popov; grandchildren, Chris, Damien, Jason, Lindzy, Casey, Clay, Katy Lynn, Joseph, Rebecca, Jacob, Katie, Emily, Christopher, Samantha, and Brandon; great-grandchildren, Angela, Dillon, and Alexandria; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
At Verns request, there will be no funeral service, but the family will have a gathering of friends and family in his memory at the Forenpohar Ranch on Dec. 2.
