Gasper, Wilma
Wilma Fern Gasper, 92, died Feb. 1 at her home in Port Orchard.
She was born Sept. 19, 1922, to John and Lily Kinzie, in Belleville, Kansas. Wilma grew up in Wheaton, Minnesota and graduated from Wheaton High School in 1940. After graduating she went to normal school to become a school teacher.
Wilma later moved to Bremerton and was a civil service worker at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.
On Sept. 26, 1944, she married Larry M. Gasper in Tacoma.
The couple moved to Minnesota and Wilma Wilma taught in a one-room schoolhouse for two years.
They move back to Bremerton in the late 1940s. She later attended Mr. Lee’s Beauty School and after graduating she was hired at The Witches Hut. Wilma retired in 1984.
Wilma was very active in TOPS Chapter 87 and was a weight recorder and KOPS for 19 years. She was a member of the Yard City Bible Church, since 1956 and served many different roles, including spiritual chairman and a youth leader.
She is survived by her children, Shari Willson of Port Orchard, Marc (Leigh Ann) Gasper of Belfair, and Debbie (Frank) Santilli of Manville, New Jersey; sister, Nell Brown of Sun City West, Arizonz; eight grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service is set for 4 p.m. Feb. 15, at Faith Community Bible Church, 3648 West F St., Bremerton. Memorials may be donations to Franciscan Hospice or Faith Community Bible Church in Wilma’s name.

Zahnow, Lyle
Lyle E. Zahnow, 77, passed away Jan. 30 in Bremerton after a long battle with Parkinson's and dementia. He is survived by his wife Linda, daughters Tami (David) and Heather (Jymm) and grandchildren. Hutchason, Marjorie Wednesday, 21 Jan 2015 Bremerton Patriot Bremerton Photo of Hutchason, Marjorie
Marjorie M. Hutchason, 84, of Bremerton died Jan. 21 at Harrison Medical Center in Bremerton. Marjorie was born Feb. 13, 1930, in Astoria, Oregon to Everett and Ida Bixby. She spent her career in Nursing and was a member of the Jehovah Witness church. Survivors include her sons David, of Port Orchard, and Mark, of Ocean Shores; four grandchildren: Rachel (Rohan) Story, Andrew Hutchason, Jacob (Julia) Hutchason and Andrew (Alicia) Hutchason; two great grandchildren: Drake and Dane. Services will be 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 6 at the Bremerton Kingdom Hall of Jehovah Witness.

Harold (Ike) Culbertson
Harold (Ike) Purl Culbertson was born Dec. 10, 1924, in Sumatra, Montana. He was nicknamed Ike when he was a boy. Ike suffered a heart attack and passed away on Jan. 19, 2015, at the age of 90, surrounded by his caring family. He was preceded in death by his mother Harriet Matilda (Froehlich) and his father Oscar Purl Culbertson. His loving wife Valborg (Andersen) was born in Denmark and, after 50 years of marriage to Ike, she died in 2001.
Ike joined the Navy in 1943 and served during WWII and the Korean war. He retired from the Navy as a Boiler Technician Master Chief Petty Officer. He then worked as a boiler operator for the Puget Sound Naval Shipyards. He retired in 1980, then worked for Harrison Hospital as a Power Plant Foreman. Val also worked there for 22 years as a nurse.
He is survived by his cousin Gwen Meyers, 90, and her children Richard Meyers and Maureen (Meyers) VanderPas. Ike previously had a heart attack in 2010, so he moved to an apt at the GenCare Lodge in Renton near his family, and continued to play cards with his new friends.
Ike and Val were both active members of the Bremerton Elks #1181, the American Legion Post #68, and the Sons of Norway.
He is survived by many friends in Bremerton, Renton and Denmark. This kind gentleman will be missed by everyone who knew him!
His memorial will be at Miller-Woodlawn 5505 Kitsap Way in Bremerton on Thursday Feb. 5 at 11am.

Bruemner, Henry
Henry Bruemmer Jr. of Crosby, passed away Nov. 26, 2014. He was born Jan. 25, 1925, in Algona, Washington to Gladys O. (Gay) Bruemmer and Henry Bruemmer Sr. He was a WWII Army veteran and served in Europe with the 334th Infantry Regiment, 84th Infantry Division and was involved in several major battles including the Battle of the Bulge.
He earned a Combat Infantryman Badge, Bronze Star Medal, European Theater Ribbon, Central Europe Campaign Ribbon with Bronze Service Star and a Purple Heart. He told a humorous story about being reported AWOL when he crossed the Atlantic on the wrong troop ship, the RMS Queen Mary, arriving in the UK ahead of his regiment.
He competed in rodeos, riding bulls and bucking broncs, then became a cattle rancher and logger. He was a mechanic who could fix anything and operate heavy equipment of all kinds.
His wife, Margaret Avery Bruemmer, sisters Violet Fischer and Betty Waltenburg and brother Don Bruemmer preceded him in death.
He is survived by his children, Peggy Stutzke, Rodney Bruemmer, Perry Bruemmer and Henry Bruemmer IV, 12 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
His sense of humor and amazing story-telling ability gathered friends daily for coffee at his home in Crosby. His family was very important to him and comforted him during his last days. He was generous, hard working, humorous and much loved by all who knew him.
A Celebration of Life will be at 1 p.m. Jan. 24 at the Crosby Community Hall.

McConnell, Cecil
Cecil M. McConnell USN RET, 84, of Bremerton, died at home Sept. 29. He was born in Baldwin, Kansas to Lelah May and Robert G. McConnell. He was preceded in death by his parents and 13 brothers and sisters.
At age 17, he joined the Navy. On Aug. 1, 1950, he married Mae Wuethrick. They raised three children.
During the course of his Navy career, Cecil served at numerous naval stations within the United States, including the National Security Agency in Washington D.C. and Puget Sound Naval Shipyard.
His final year of service was spent aboard the USS Delta (AR-9), installing and programming some of the first computer systems to be placed aboard US naval ships. He was a member of the All Navy Rifle and Pistol Team, becoming distinguished in both and earning many marksmanship excellence awards in competitions throughout the United States.
He was invited to compete in the 1963 Pan-American Games, but his duties prevented his attendance. He retired from the Navy in 1967 as a Chief Petty Officer, and moved his family to Bremerton, where he had once been stationed.
In the years following his retirement from the Navy, Cecil worked as a computer specialist for Naval Torpedo Station Keyport; the State of Washington; and Puget Sound Naval Shipyard. He retired in 1985.
He had always been an avid rifle and bow hunter and was a life-long member of the NRA. He had been a member of the Bremerton Trap and Skeet Club and the Kitsap Bowhunting Club. In 1991, he opened the Kitsap Archery shop out of his home. He sold the business in 1996, when he was elected to the Bremerton City Council for the first of four terms.
Cecil enjoyed golfing (achieving four hole-in-ones at Rolling Hills), painting, wood carving, skeet and trap shooting, archery and shooting the breeze with friends every weekend at local eating establishments.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years; his son, Robert McConnell, Bremerton; his daughters Michele (Jim) Turowski, Seabeck; and Patricia (Ernie) Maxon, Port Orchard; three grandchildren, Ray (Kirstie) Turowski, Jason Turowski and Andrea (Sam) Overturf; four great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces.
A Celebration of Life will be Oct. 11, at 11 a.m. at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Bremerton. Memorials may be made to Emmanuel Lutheran Church Kitchen Fund.

Blackwell, Betty
Betty Blackwell was born Sept. 4, 1920 to Frank and Ethel Bremer in Sedro Wooley. Betty died peacefully at home on June 1, 2014. She lived an amazing 93 years. She was married to Louis Blackwell for 50 years. He preceded her in death in 1989.
She was a circulation driver for 30 years for the Bremerton Sun. Since retiring she had enjoyed gardening and solving all the problems of her children.
She had five children, Kenneth Blackwell who died when he was 8, Dwayne and (Linda) Blackwell of Belfair, Richard and (Carrie) Blackwell of Belfair, Noreen Hamren of Bremerton and Jenette Blackwell of Belfair. She has 10 grandchildren with one grandson, Kenneth McGuire who proceeded her in death in 1996 and 17 great-grandchildren.
Donations can be made to Providence St. Peter Foundations, designated to Sound Home Care and Hospice who were a blessing to the family during her final days.

David C. Warren
David Charles Warren, 87, of Watertown, died April 28, 2014, at Marquardt Health Center in Watertown, Penn.
He was born Aug. 1, 1926, in Detroit to Charles and Nellie (Froggatt) Warren. David was a graduate of Gladstone (Mich.) High School. On June 23, 1953, he married Suzanne Stauss Cowan at First Baptist Church, San Francisco, Calif. They honeymooned at Yosemite National Park, traveling by their first “car, ” a Harley he had ridden from the Midwest.
A World War II and Korean War veteran, David served his country in the U.S. Navy and as a watchman with the U.S. Coast Guard. Following his discharge, David worked for the Department of Defense as a naval architect at Hunters Point Naval Shipyard, San Francisco, then as an engineering technician for PERA at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard, Bremerton.
At age 8, David personally placed his faith in Jesus Christ. He counted it a privilege to serve as a church music director for many years. He also loved to play his trombone and work with anything electronic.
He is survived by his wife Suzanne; children, David (Dondeena) Warren of Anderson, Ind., Vicki (Bill) Mulder of Watertown, Tim (Leah) Warren of Elizabethtown, Penn., Joel (Dawn) Warren of University Place, Wash.; grandchildren Tricia (Caleb) Sturm, David (Catie) Mulder, Daniel Mulder, Megan (Josiah) Enrique, Paul Mulder, Candis, Courtney, Carissa, Jeremy, and Joshua Warren; and great-granddaughters Melody and Jasmine. David also is survived by a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.
David was preceded in death by his parents; three sisters, Alma (Donald) Macdonald, Fern (Charles) Everett, and Doris (Fred) Young; and a grandson, Timothy Mulder, in infancy.
The family is grateful for the care provided by the Marquardt staff, as well as the loving encouragement of the Calvary Baptist Church (Watertown) family. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts to the church would be appreciated.
The funeral service was May 6, at Calvary Baptist Church. Burial was at Ebenezer Moravian cemetery.
Pederson-Nowatka Funeral Home is serving the family.

Anderson, Norma
Norma Aarts Anderson died April 20, 2014 at home. She was born March 9, 1933, in Shelton to Adrian and Henny (Skagan) Aarts. She moved to Bremerton and remained there through high school and then resided in Seabeck.
She was a devoted wife, caring mother and fun grandmother. She loved cooking, crocheting, gardening and swimming in the Hood Canal. She helped run the family business “Miami Beach Resort” with her husband Roger. They retired in 1985 and traveled, returning to Seabeck where she was a daily friend to many that came to Turie’s Espresso at Seabeck.
Norma is survived her husband, Roger, of 62 years, daughter, Turie (Eric) Peterson, son, Adrian (Lynn) Anderson, sisters, Penny (Aarts) Loveless and Connie (Aarts) Coons, grandsons, Corby (Jessica Spaulding) Killoran, Aaron Killoran, Nicholas and Ian Anderson, great-grandchildren, Corbyn, Marlee, and Brayden Killoran.
Memorial donations can be made to Hospice of Kitsap County. Arrangements are by Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home.

George F. Heller
George Frederick Heller died peacefully Dec. 1, 2010, at Southwest Washington Medical Center in Vancouver. He was 86.
A graveside service with full military honors was held Dec. 7, at 2 p.m., at Willamette National cemetery in Portland, Ore. Brown’s Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Camas was in charge of arrangements.
Memorial donations can be made to the American Heart Association.

Amanda D. Klenk
Amanda D. Klenk died Dec. 6, 2010, at Southwest Washington Medical Center in Vancouver. She was 41.
She was born Oct. 11, 1969, in Sonoma, Calif. Service arrangements are pending. For details, contact Straub’s Funeral Home & Columbia River Cremation in Camas at 834-4563.

Richard C. Johnson
Richard C. Johnson, of Washougal, died peacefully Dec. 10, 2010, surrounded by his family. He was 82.
A funeral mass will be held on Wednesday, at 11 a.m., at St. Thomas Aquinas Catholic Church. A reception will follow. Burial will be private at Evergreen Memorial gardens cemetery in Vancouver. Straub’s Funeral Home & Columbia River Cremation in Camas is in charge of arrangements.

Sgt. Jason D. Peto
Sgt. Jason Darren Peto, 3rd Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, died Dec. 7, 2010, at the Bethesda Naval Hospital in Maryland after fighting bravely and honorably in Afghanistan defending his country and his Lord. He was 31.
A funeral mass will be held Saturday, Dec. 18, at 12:30 p.m., at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 17010 N.E. 9th St., Vancouver. Viewing will be held at Brown’s Funeral Home, 410 N.E. Garfield St., Camas, on Friday, Dec. 17, from noon to 5 p.m. A graveside service with full military honors will be held Thursday, Dec. 23, at Riverside National cemetery, 22495 Van Buren Blvd; Riverside, CA 92518-2740. Brown’s Funeral Home and Cremation Services is in charge of arrangements.
In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to the Wounded Warrior Project, 7020 AC Skinner Parkway, Ste. 100; Jacksonville, FL 32256.

Barbara Gibbons Reilly
Barbara Gibbons Reilly died Nov. 20, 2010. She was 79.
Memorial donations can be made to the Ray Hickey Hospice House or Hospice Southwest.

Dorothy E. Peet
Dorothy Elizabeth Peet died peacefully with her family by her side Dec. 6, 2010, at her home in Washougal. She was 92.
A graveside service was held Friday at the Washougal Memorial cemetery. Brown’s Funeral Home and Cremation Services in Camas was in charge of arrangements.

James S. ‘Stan’ Steele
James Stanley “Stan” Steele died Dec. 8, 2010, at his home in Camas with his family at his side after courageously battling a 60 year battle with Type I diabetes. He was 72.
A celebration of Stan’s life was held Monday at Brown’s Funeral Home in Camas. A private natural burial followed at the Fern Prairie cemetery in Camas. Brown’s Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
