Kenneth E. Webley
Kenneth E. Webley, 63, of Ephrata, passed away September 24, 2003 in Ephrata. He was born May 16, 1940 in Wenatchee, Wash. to Ervin E. and Evelyn L. Webley. He went to high school in Quincy, Wash.
Ken married Margjorie on May 16, 1962 in Coeur dAlene, Idaho. He worked for the city of Ephrata as a street supervisor. He gave the city 20 years of service.
Ken loved to hunt and fish, making hunting trips to Oregon, Utah, Wyoming and Montana. He loved to spend time with his family and friends.
He is survived by: his wife, Marge Webley of Ephrata; daughter, Becky Smith of Yerrington, Nev.; stepdaughters, Dorothy Matthews of Raleigh, NC and Jean Howard of Soap Lake, Wash.; son, Kevin Webley of Ephrata; stepson, Bud Howard of Yerrington, Nev.; brothers, Ervin E. Webley of Moses Lake, Wash. and Richard E. Webley of Quincy; one sister, Mary Lou Clue of Moses Lake; grandchildren, Skeeter Matthews, Jeremy Matthews, both of Raleigh, Mandy Howard, Melissa Howard, Kelsey Howard, Giovanni Smith and Wyatt Smith, all of Yerrington, Amy Chatterton of Crescent City, Calif., Heather Kimble of Front Royal, Va., Keyton Webley, Corey Webley and Kent Webley Armstrong, all of Moses Lake.
Ken was preceded in death by an infant son, Kenneth Earl Webley Jr. in 1968, his parents, Ervin and Evelyn Webley, and a brother, Ned Webley.
Memorial services will be held Saturday, September 27, 2003 at 11 a.m. at Nicoles Funeral Home Chapel in Ephrata.
Nicoles Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Allan S. Cummins
Allan S. Cummins, 55, longtime Moses Lake resident, passed away on Tuesday, August 5, 2003 at Central Washington Hospital in Wenatchee, Wash. from injuries sustained in a car/pedestrian accident in Moses Lake earlier in the day.
Arrangements are in care of Kaysers Chapel and Crematory.

Marion C. 'Sandy' Sanders
Marion C. 'Sandy' Sanders died Monday, August 4, 2003 at his home in Moses Lake. He was born June 16, 1920 in Gillette, Wyo. to Martha and Lawrence Sanders.
Sandy attended schools in Gillette before moving to Grand Coulee to work on the construction of the Grand Coulee Dam. he also attended Grand Coulee High School and graduated in 1940.
He married his wife, Erma on July 12, 1941 in Port Orchard, Wash. They met in Grand Coulee while Erma was on a trip from her home in Walden, Colo. to visit relatives in the Grand Coulee area in 1939.
In 1943, Sandy enlisted in the U.S. Navy and after his service, he moved with his wife and family to Moses Lake in 1951. Upon arrival, the Sanders built their home north of Moses Lake where they still reside.
Sandy was a journeyman carpenter and was involved in many construction projects in the Moses Lake area. He was also very involved for a number of years in the design and construction of the Moses Lake Community Float during which time the community received numerous awards.
He is survived by: his wife Erma, at their home; his daughter, Sherry Mouncer of Salem, Ore.; grandson, Terry Sime and his daughter, Chelsey of Beaverton, Ore.; brothers, Ron Sanders of Renton, Wash. and Ray Sanders of Glendale, Ariz.; sister, Leta Hicks of Charleston, SC; and numerous nieces and nephews, including Arnold Springen of Moses Lake.
Sandy was preceded in death by a daughter, Patty, a grandson, Jason Sime, a brother, Ralph Sanders and a sister, Rene Gilman.
At Sandys request, no formal services will be held and he will be inurned in Beaverton, Ore. beside his daughter and grandson.
Scharbach-Columbia Funeral Home in Quincy, Wash. is in charge of the inurnment.

Barend-Jan Beukelman
On August 5, 2003, God took home a beloved husband, father and grandfather, Barend-Jan Beukelman, who lost his battle with leukemia at the age of 68.
He leaves behind: his wife of 46 years, Jannie Beukelman; children, Elna and Herman Hartog of Holland, Samuel and Judith Beukelman, Nico and JoAnn Beukelman and John Beukelman of California, Jeannette and Scott Meyers and Gerdiene Velazquez of Moses Lake, Wash.; and 12 grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his infant son, Leo.
He was loved by all and will be missed by all.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, August 8, 2003 at the Moses Lake First Presbyterian Church with Pastor Eric Frey officiating. Interment will follow in Pioneer Memorial Gardens.
Arrangements are in care of Kayser&39;s Chapel and Crematory, Moses Lake. Friends may call at the funeral home for viewing on Thursday until 7 p.m. and Friday from 8 a.m. until noon.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the family.

Edna "Christy" Shweitzer
Edna "Christy" Shweitzer, 78, Moses Lake resident, passed away Tuesday, September 10, 2002 at Central Washington Hospital in Wenatchee, Wash. Cremation arrangements are in care of Kayser's Chapel & Crematory, Moses Lake. Inurnment will take place at a later date in the Hartline cemetery. Chris, as she was known to her family and friends, was born July 23, 1924, at Port Orchard, Wash. to Samuel L. "Jack" and Nellie A. Hyde (Dugger) Christy. She spent her early childhood in the Port Orchard/Bremerton area of western Washington with her siblings, Myrtle Dugger and Jim, Calvin, Carl and Eloise Christy. Following the death of her father in 1933, the family moved to eastern Washington where they made their home in Hartline beginning in 1935. She continued her education at Hartline, graduating in 1941. Following graduation, she spent several years in Alaska and California. Returning to the Bremerton area, she met her future husband, Leonard H. Shweitzer, Jr. Edna "Chris" and Leonard were married June 23, 1946 in Bremerton. Following Leonard's discharge from the United States Navy, they returned to his home state of Pennsylvania, living in Schenectady, Bethlehem, Erie and DuBois, during and after he finished his college education and career in electrical engineering. Chris enjoyed photography, pursuing a career as a free-lance photographer, winning many local, state and national awards. In 1994, Chris and Len moved to West Palm Beach, Fla. to be near one of their sons, Jeffrey, an executive with Pratt& Whitney. Following Jeff's transfer to Hartford, Conn. in 1999, Chris and Len moved to Silverdale, Wash. and her beloved Pacific Northwest. In her failing health, they moved to Moses lake in late August of 2001, to be near her niece and husband, Patti and David Goodwin of Hartline. Chris is survived by her husband, Leonard of 56 years; three sons, Jeffrey K. (Tami) of Avon, Conn., Robert C. (Carolyn) of Katy, Texas, and Lytle Johnson of Kirkland and Decauter Island, Wash.; three grandchildren, Heidi dePadua, Palm Harbor, Fla., Michael Schweitzer of Avon, Conn. and Mark Schweitzer of Jacksonville, Fla.; one great-granddaughter, Taylor dePadua. She is also survived by many nieces and nephews, including David and Patti Goodwin of Hartline. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by sisters, Myrtle Jess and Eloise Jess and brothers, Jim, Carl and Calvin Christy.

Hugo Van Binsbergen
Hugo Van Binsbergen, 92, longtime Royal City resident and area farmer, passed away Monday, September 9, 2002 at Samaritan Hospital in Moses Lake. Funeral services will be held at 10 am Saturday, September 14, 2002 a the Church of the Nazarene in Royal City with Pastor Tim Snyder officiating. Interment will follow in Royal Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are in care of Kayser's Chapel & Crematory, Moses Lake. Hugo was born November 11, 1090 in Werkendam, Holland to the late Johannes and Marie (Gruenveld) Van Binsbergen. He was raised in Sioux Center, Iowa, on a farm where he met his wife in a country school. They were married June 4, 1931 and farmed in Iowa until the Depression when and his wife and son moved to North Dakota. At every point in his life, he loved the land and farming. He rode the rails looking for work, writing often to his wife and baby son back home. Finding land in Arkansas, he thought they had found their dream. Almost dying of yellow fever brought them back to Iowa, from where he moved to Washington state with a dream again of farming. Working on Grand Coulee Dam brought him closer to his dream. He then had a daughter and worked several other farms. He was never without a hammer or shovel and an idea about the future. The lure of irrigated farming finally settled him in Royal City, where he lived and farmed for 46 years. He never knew a stranger. He trusted everyone. He loved building and was very involved in his community, farm labor housing, senior center, school board and the cemetery board. He is survived by his wife, Angelyn Van Binsbergen; sister, Lena Sailer, Iowa; son, John Van Binsbergen and wife Joann, Indiana; daughter, Beverly Mickle and husband, Ronald, Royal City; five grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and cousins. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his two brothers, Evert and John.

Greg Bretz
Greg Bretz, age 55, passed away in Phoenix, Ariz. on Monday, Oct. 14. Bretz pastored the Hope Community Foursquare Church of Moses Lake from 1975-1981. A native of Fresno, Calif., Greg met his Norwegian wife, Inger, while serving in Germany with the U.S. Army. They were married in Norway in 1969 and made their first home in Fresno where their daughter, Lena, was born. They returned to Norway to work as youth pastors. While there, their daughter, Lise, was born. They returned to the United States in the spring of 1975 and lived a short time in Ellensburg before moving to Moses Lake. In August of 1975, Greg became the pastor of Hope Community Church. During his tenure in Moses Lake, he helped a fledgling prayer group become and established local church. Greg was a gifted musician, teacher and counselor. He earned a bachelor of arts in English from Central Washington University. His youngest daughter, Lydia, was born in Moses Lake in 1981. The Bretz family became missionaries and began the first Norwegian Foursquare Church in 1983 in Stathelle, Norway. Following several years of ministry in Norway, they returned to Washington to pastor the Yakima Foursquare Church. His last few years were spent in Norway and Phoenix, Ariz. Greg is survived by his wife, Inger; three daughters; three grandchildren; his parents, Chet and Kathleen Bretz; two brothers and a sister. The funeral will be held at the Yakima Foursquare Church, Wednesday, Oct. 23. In lieu of flowers please send any financial assistance to the Lake City Foursquare Church "Bretz Family Fund" in Moses Lake.

Elmer E. Watters, Jr.
Elmer E. Watters, Jr., 87, Moses Lake resident, formerly of Odessa, passed away Wednesday, January 29, 2003 at Samaritan Hospital. Private family committal services will be held at a later date in Colorado. Arrangements are in care of Kaysers Chapel and Crematory, Moses Lake.
Elmer was born July 29, 1915 in Rocky Ford, Colo., son of the late Elmer E. and Edna Dunlap Watters, Sr. He was raised and educated in Rocky Ford. As a young man, Elmer had worked on the family farm and ranch with his father. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy, serving in both the Pacific and Atlantic Theaters of World War II. He was married to Betty E. White on November 5, 1944 in Hamilton, Ohio. Betty, from Bristol, Colo., served in the U.S. Navy WAVES during WWII. Upon their honorable discharges, they returned to dairy farming and ranching in Rocky Ford, raising cattle, sheep, and horses in addition to a variety of crops.
In 1967 they moved to California, eventually settling in the Ventura area. While there, Elmer worked in the oil fields and area dairy farms. In 1972 they moved to Odessa, Wash. where he resumed farming until his retirement at age 83. They moved to Hearthstone Inn at Moses Lake in September of 2001, where they have lived since.
Elmer loved his life as a farmer and rancher, especially taking care of all the animals. He dearly loved his family and cherished the time spent with them. He was a member of the Odessa Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He is survived by: his loving wife of more than 58 years, Betty Watters of Moses Lake; one son and daughter-in-law, Tom and Patty Watters of Odessa; one daughter and son-in-law, Jeanne and Bruce Tepper of Grass Valley, Calif.; one brother, Robert Watters of Colorado Springs, Colo.; twin sisters, 91 years old, Evelyn Wallis and Doris Mullins, both of Pueblo, Colo.; five grandchildren, Jamie Murray, Kerri Dowers, Loni Watters, Marisha Tepper and Josh Tepper; and six great-grandchildren with a seventh due in June.
He was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother.

Frank Miller
Frank was born February 8, 1919 to the late Reuben and Myrtle Pellett Miller in Wenatchee, Wash.
He lived at the Clarence Bechtol place and started school at the Rockrose School until the seventh grade. In the fall of 1931, the family moved to Sam Buob place and he started the eighth grade in Coulee City. In the fall of 1933, they moved to the home place and he graduated from high school in 1938.
He married the love of his life, Mary Louise "Marylou" Nansen on October 27, 1948 in Almira, Wash. They made their home in Coulee City. Frank was a loving and devoted husband and caregiver. He unselfishly cared for Marylou and her physical difficulties for many years prior to her passing away on Easter Sunday in 1994.
Frank was a World War II army veteran. He began his service with the United States Army at Camp Pendleton in California and continued serving his country as a mule-packer in Kansas, along with a year of duty in Japan. He was later honorably discharged.
He worked for a short time in Spokane with his best friend, David Adams, before returning home and becoming a lifetime farmer, joining his brothers to form the "Miller Brothers Farms." He was a fixture for all the basketball and football games and was a lifetime supporter of the ACH school sports. This last year he was given an honorary seat at the games.
He loved going to card parties and enjoyed people. Frank was a loving, gentle man with a love of children, an infectious laugh and sense of humor.
Frank was a member of the Coulee City First Presbyterian Church and a 50-year member of St. Andrews Grange 832.
Survivors include: four children, Marvin Miller and Carmen Jim Cunningham, both of Coulee City; Elton Juli Miller of Moses Lake; and Milton Miller of Wenatchee, Wash.; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Claude and Nancy Miller of Coulee City; Clyde and Jo Miller of Wenatchee; seven grandchildren, Marty and Morgan Miller of Moses Lake, Colby Cunningham of Coulee City, Colin Cunningham of Waterville, Abby Miller of Prosser, and Zach and James Borst; a great-grandson, Triston Cunningham of Yakima; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Besides his wife and parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters, Maime and Nellie.
The family suggests memorials be made to the Coulee City First Presbyterian Church or the ACH sports program.

Loretta M. Duville
Loretta M. Duville, 63, of Moses Lake passed away on Saturday, May 24, 2003 at McKay Healthcare & Rehab Center in Soap Lake. She was born on February 12, 1940 to Harry and Marion (Harrel) Palmer in Huron, S.D. She attended school and graduated from Huron High School in 1958. She moved to Grant County in 1970 and made Moses Lake her home. Loretta worked for Carnation and later for Chore Services until 1998 when her health forced her to retire.
She is survived by: Sons, Randy Duville and Don Duville both of Moses Lake; sister: Lola Smith of Ephrata; and one grandchild. Memorial services will be held on Friday, May 30, 2003 at 11a.m. from Grace Lutheran Church, 303 E. Nelson Road, Moses Lake, Wash. 98837, with Pastor Dan Kunkel officiating. Scharbach's Columbia Funeral Chapel in Quincy assisting with arrangements.

Roland and Elsie Walth
The Roland and Elsie Walth Memorial will take place Saturday, May 31, 2003 with a graveside burial at 10:30 a.m. at the Royal City Memorial cemetery.
A reception will follow at St. Michaels Parish in Royal City.

William R. Thompson
William R. Thompson, 90, of Moses Lake, passed away May 24, 2003.
Service will be Friday, May 30, 2003 at Graveside Spring Canyon cemetery at 11:30 a.m.
Arrangements are in care of Nicoles Funeral Home, Ephrata, Wash.

Robert J. Cornwell
Robert J. Cornwell, 65, of Lakeview, and a former Ephrata resident, passed away Wednesday, May 28, 2003 at his home after a short battle with cancer.
He was born August 12, 1937 in Detroit, Mich.
Bob graduated from Washington State University in 1962, where he was the 1959 NCAA Boxing Champion.
He moved to Ephrata with his family in 1964 and started working with children in the Juvenile Court system. Bob retired as administrator of Juvenile Court in 1995 after 31 years of service.
He was a member of the Ephrata Moose Lodge, Ephrata Elks and the Lakeview Golf and Country Club, where he enjoyed many a round of golf with his friends.
Bob is survived by: his wife, Barbara, at home; three children, Debra Conrad and husband, Tom of Mt. Vernon, Ill.; Bob Cornwell, Jr. and wife, Cheryl of Beaverton, Ore.; and Kathy Hilliard and husband, Wade of Ephrata; seven grandchildren, who were the joys of his life, Robbie, Travis, Christopher and Danny Cornwell of Beaverton, Ore. and Garrett, Katie and Amy Hilliard of Ephrata; and a sister, Patsy Williams of Bay City, Mich.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Sophia, in 2000.
Funeral services will be held Monday, June 2, 2003 at 11 a.m. at Nicoles Funeral Home Chapel with burial to follow at Valley View Memorial Park in Soap Lake, Wash.
Nicoles Funeral Home of Ephrata is in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice.

Verlyn C. Cole
Verlyn C. Cole, 79, lifelong Moses Lake resident, passed away Thursday, July 24, 2003 at the Columbia Basin Hospital in Ephrata. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, July 30, 2003 at the Seventh-Day Adventist Church in Moses Lake. Interment will follow at Pioneer Memorial Gardens.
Visitation will be at Kaysers Chapel, Moses Lake, on Monday, July 28, 2003 until 7 p.m. and on Tuesday, July 29, from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Verlyn was born on December 31, 1923 in Ephrata, Wash., to the pioneer family of Earl and Bertha Cole. The Cole family settled in the Frenchman Hills in 1906. Verlyn attended grade school in the one-room school house in Mae Valley before moving to the Moses Lake Grade School. Verlyn served as the junior and senior class president at Moses Lake High School and had the honor of being chosen for the Grant County All-Star basketball team.
He graduated from high school in 1942 with his childhood sweetheart, Bonnie Burress. Verlyn and Bonnies romance started in the fourth grade when Verlyn began playing the violin primarily so he could sit by Bonnie in the school orchestra. Bonnie fondly remembers that she and Verlyn played a violin duet for their high school graduation and says that they "have been a duet ever since." Verlyn and Bonnie were married on July 8, 1942 and recently celebrated their 61st anniversary.
Verlyn was a farmer and rancher throughout his life. His love of the soil was surpassed only by his love for the registered Hereford cattle that he raised. Verlyn also loved sports, especially the Mariners, and he spent his last evening watching the Mariners on television, surrounded by his family and friends.
Verlyn was active in the community. He held various positions in the Seventh-Day Adventist Church of which his parents were charter members, and he was committed to Christian education, serving as the school board chairman of the local Seventh-Day Adventist school for many years. He was a member of the Washington State Cattlemens Association and one year was voted "Cattleman of the Year."
Verlyn was a charter member and president of the Columbia Basin Rodeo Association. He also served as a member of the F.H.A. Loan Committee and was active in the Soil Conservation District.
Verlyn was a man of great integrity and compassion. He was hard-working, devoted, kind and sentimental. He was an incredible husband, "Daddy, " father-in-law and "Gramps." He never failed in his commitment to love, honor and hold his family above all else. As his physical needs increased, his gratitude was always displayed by his gentle "thank you." Verlyns refined mannerisms were complimented by his stylish and immaculate dress, and he was often referred to as the "Silver Fox" by his family.
Verlyn is survived by: his wife of 61 years, Bonnie; three daughters and their spouses, Ginger and Jack Erickson, Judy and George Twigg, and Cindy and Steve Kalamakis; brother, Ivan Cole; brother-in-law, Don Morton; grandchildren, Debbie and Barry McBroom, George Twigg II, Bonnie Rae and Dr. Cliff Cullings, Hailey Kalamakis, Hanna Kalamakis, Chris Diaz, Kathy Lyons and Shelly Ehrmantraut; several great-grandchildren and a large extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Fern Morton and Phyllis Libby, and a granddaughter, Laurie Hoffman.
Verlyn's life is a legacy that will continue to inspire his family and friends forever.
