DUSTIN FOOTE
Dustin Thomas Foote, 22, died early Feb. 8, 2005, near Snowmass, Colo., where he succumbed to a rare type of bacterial meningitis. He checked into the Snowmass Hospital Monday evening with flu-like symptoms. Though he was given the best care, he slipped into a coma and died early Tuesday morning.
Dusty was born in Ellensburg July 27, 1982. He grew up in the Kittitas Valley, graduated from Ellensburg High School in 2000, and went on to Central Washington University where he planned to graduate this spring with a degree in recreation and tourism.
Dusty grew up on Wilson Creek Road and got from his parents a love of the outdoors. He loved fishing, mountain biking and skiing. In high school Dusty traveled throughout the United States participating in the LifeSmarts program. He also played tennis, taught skiing and worked at the Palace Cafe. At CWU his love of casinos, vacation time and revelry led him to pursue a recreation and tourism major. He also coached youth soccer, played intramural sports and continued to ski and work at the Palace Cafe where he progressed from dishwasher to being one of the only male servers.
At the time of his death, Dusty was interning at Snowmass in Aspen, working at a restaurant, tending bar and getting in as many powder days as possible.
Dusty will be missed by everyone who had the good fortune to know him. He touched many lives in a positive way. Dusty had a way of making people feel comfortable around him, no matter how they knew him. His openness, his sense of humor and his innate goodness defined Dusty.
There was nothing Dusty wanted so much as a family of his own, with kids who he could play with, teach and learn from. The saddest thing about Dustys death is how clearly we can see the growth and potential of the man he was becoming, the father that he would have been, and the friend, brother and son that we miss so much.
If there is a lesson to be taken from Dustys life it is that success isnt something one must grapple and struggle and push for. Dusty was getting there an entirely different way through loyalty to friends and family, a healthy appetite for fun, hard work in endeavors that he enjoyed and a true and good heart that led him. Dusty was amiably shuffling toward success as a person and enjoying himself along the way.
He is survived by his mother, Nanci; sisters, Kathleen, Karen and Kristie; their families; and numerous families in the valley that consider Dusty a surrogate son. He was preceded in death by his father, Tom Foote, Dustys role model as a father and as a man.
Dusty's remains were cremated and his ashes will be spread on the bike trails he and his dad loved to ride together. He and Tom are happily riding together again.
A celebration of Dustys life will take place Feb. 13, in the CWU SUB Theater room on the second floor of the SUB. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Dustin T. Foote Memorial Fund at any U.S. Bank.
