William Henry Smith
Dec. 26, 1927 -- Sept. 26, 2006
William Henry ``Bill" Smith of Longview and Port Townsend died in Jefferson Healthcare hospital of a heart attack. He was 78.
He was born in York, Pa., to Thomas Byron and Miriam LeVan (Moore) Smith.
Raised in Maryland on a cattle ranch, he has a grand champion heifer record in the Book of Guernsey.
He moved to California as a teen-ager.
During World War II, Mr. Smith served with the Merchant Marine. He received his honorable discharge on Oct. 30, 1951.
After this, as a rotary-wing mechanic for helicopters with the Air Force, he was involved in behind-the-lines rescue in Korea. His military citations included the Korean, United Nations and National Defense Service medals.
In 1962-64, he was sales manager at Las Vegas Boat Harbor. In 1964-66, he owned two service stations in Nevada.
He moved to Longview in August 1966.
Mr. Smith's marriage to Marian Adams, the mother of his two daughters, ended in divorce after their relocation to Las Vegas.
He married Christine Wendy Thomas, on Aug. 17, 1966, in Las Vegas.
Mr. Smith retired from Reynolds Aluminum cable division in 1989.
His hobbies included rescuing and raising horses, and motorcycling. His family said he held the world speed record on the salt flats of Bonneville, Utah, for three days.
He also liked helping neighbors with projects, floral gardening, fishing and motorboating.
When at his vacation home in Port Townsend, Mr. Smith enjoyed walking his little dog, Sidney.
In addition to his wife, of Port Townsend, survivors include daughters Holly Janine Smith and Julie Gail Smith, both of Longview; and brother Thomas Smith of Fredericksburg, Md.
Services: Sunday, Oct. 1, 3 p.m., memorial potluck in the Tri-Area Community Center, 10 West Valley Road, Chimacum. The Rev. Gabriel Lee of the Port Townsend Greek Orthodox Church will preside.
Kosec Funeral Home, Port Townsend, is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials: A women's shelter, animal shelter or other charity of choice. The family requests no flowers.

Keith Bernard Taylor
Sept. 24, 1934 -- Sept. 25, 2006
Keith Bernard Taylor of Port Angeles died of pneumonia. He was 72.
Born in Seattle to Warren Harrington and Billie (Bernard) Taylor, he attended Marymount Military Academy and graduated from Highline High School.
He married Peggy Lee Shepherd in Sequim on June 23, 1967.
Mr. Taylor owned Taylor's Auto Rebuild in Port Angeles. Previously, he worked in real estate in Seattle.
He enjoyed military antiques and collectibles.
Survivors include his wife; sons and daughters-in-law Warren and Marissa Taylor and Kurt and Tina Taylor, all of Port Angeles; son and daughter-in-law Al and Cheryl Taylor of Kent; son Mark Taylor of Everett; and four grandchildren.
Services: Saturday, Sept. 30, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., open house at the residence of Peggy Lee Taylor, 330 Brown Road, Port Angeles.
Drennan-Ford Funeral Home, Port Angeles, is in charge of arrangements.

Hilda Gray
Aug. 29, 1914 -- Sept. 10, 2006
Services: Saturday, Sept. 30, 11 a.m., memorial Mass in Queen of Angels Roman Catholic Church, 209 W. 11th St., Port Angeles.
A reception will follow at the church.

Marvin A. Dalman
Sept. 11, 1929 -- Sept. 23, 2006
Marvin A. Dalman of Bear Creek in the Sol Duc Valley died of heart-related problems. He was 77.
He was born to Emil and Beulah Dalman in Snoqualmie Falls, where after his schooling, he worked for Weyerhaeuser Timber Co.
He married Ann Marie Pearson of Preston on Aug. 13, 1949.
The Dalmans moved to Roseburg, Ore., where he was employed by Roseburg Lumber Co. for many years before moving to Port Angeles in 1969.
They moved to Bear Creek on the West End in 1972.
Mr. Dalman was employed by logging companies, and despite a back injury continued bringing in wood for his family and crafting wood items that sold in local bazaars and farmers markets.
He enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping. As the father of two sons, he donated many years of work to Boy Scouts of America.
His passion for steelhead spawned the tradition of having one swimming in a sunken bathtub for all to see on Thanksgiving Day, then running it back down to the river for release.
Survivors include his wife; sons and daughters-in-law Steven and Karen Dalman, and Dennis and Jennie Dalman; brothers Dean and Richard Dalman; and seven grandchildren.
Services: Saturday, Sept. 30, 11 a.m., memorial in the Assembly of God Church, 81 Huckleberry Lane, Forks.
Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel, Port Angeles, is in charge of arrangements.

Paul A. Lawson
March 30, 1942 -- Sept. 23, 2006
Paul A. Lawson of Port Hadlock died in Bremerton of a heart attack. He was 54.
The son of Ivan and Harriet (Leach) Lawson, he was born in Seattle, which remained his home until he retired from the Boeing Co. and moved to Port Hadlock.
Mr. Lawson married Lily Yu-Don Pan in Reno, Nev., on Jan. 30, 1980.
During his 35-year career, he was recognized for 10 years of employment without a day of absence, and was never involved in a layoff.
Mr. Lawson enjoyed restoring classic cars, especially Packards. After retirement, spent as much time as he could camping and fishing.
He was also interested in science and astronomy.
His memberships included Supervising Leads of Boeing and the Packard Club.
In addition to his wife, Mr. Lawson's survivors include sons Reily, Ryan, Richard and Royal Lawson, all of Port Hadlock, as well as Danny Hsiao of China and K.J. Hsiao of Taiwan; daughter Sally Lawson of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; sister and brother-in-law Janice and Bob Stewart; and four grandchildren.
Services: Saturday, Sept. 30, 2 p.m. to 5 p.m., celebration of life at Shanghai Restaurant, 265 Point Hudson St., Port Townsend.

William Henry Smith died in his Port Townsend home following a heart attack. He was 78.

Betty Jeanne Allin Walling
Jan. 2, 1925 -- Sept. 10, 2006
Bette Jeanne Allin Walling died in her Port Angeles home of a heart attack. She was 81.
She was born in St. Cloud, Minn., to Mathew and Violet (Parent) Mohr.
She received her higher education at The College of St. Catherine and at St. Mary's School of Nursing, both in Minneapolis.
She married George Stearns Allin Jr. in Seattle in 1947. They moved to Port Angeles in 1977, at the time of his medical early retirement, to be near his parents. He died in February 1978.
She married Victor C. Walling in Forks in November 1992. He died on Dec. 25, 2005.
Mrs. Walling, who had worked as an airline flight attendant and office nurse in Seattle as well as a dental assistant in Illinois, also lived in Iowa and Wisconsin before coming to the North Olympic Peninsula.
She was a member of Queen of Angels Roman Catholic Church in Port Angeles and the St. Francis Guild. Bible studies were on her list of favorite activities, as were hiking in the Olympics, picnicking with friends, gardening and floral arrangements.
Survivors include her stepsons Victor Walling Jr. of California and Mark Walling of Tennessee.; stepdaughter and stepson-in-law Missy and Jim Anderson of Kirkland; sister-in-law Madora Allin Boyd of Rochester; and eight stepgrandchildren.
Services: Thursday, Sept. 28, 6:30 p.m., rosary in Queen of Angels Catholic Church, 209 W. 11th St., Port Angeles.
Memorial Mass on Friday, Sept. 29, 11 a.m., also in Queen of Angels, with the Rev. Kurt Nagle celebrating. A reception will follow in O'Donnell Hall, next to the church.
Inurnment at Mount Angeles Memorial Park, U.S. Highway 101 and Monroe Road, will be later.

Dorothy Carole Cudd
Nov. 28, 1936 -- July 31, 2006
Dorothy Carole Cudd died in her Port Angeles home of lung cancer at 69,
She was born in Anaconda, Mont., to George and Edna E. (Fairbault) McArdle.
She married Douglas B. Cudd in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, on April 11, 1953.
Mrs. Cudd, who served as secretary for one year with the Lincoln School PTA, worked at Aggie's restaurant and motel, modeled for Willie Lou's dress shop, and at retirement was employed by Bruce Cleaners.
She enjoyed bowling, golfing and playing cards as well as drawing, painting, knitting and sewing. She also liked to travel.
Mrs. Cudd, who was an active member of Queen of Angels Roman Catholic Church, belonged to the Newcomers Club, ``Y" Circle and Elks. She was also a charter member of Sweet Adelines and the Emblem Club.
Survivors include her husband of Port Angeles; daughters and sons-in-law Theresa and Rich Hoch, and Deborah and Arnel Alcafaras of Port Angeles; daughters Penny Ervin and Sandy Cudd of Port Angeles, and Colleen Cudd of San Mateo, Calif.; sister Patsy Pramenko; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by son John Patrick Cudd; brothers Jim McArdle and Harry McArdle; and sisters Leola Yorton, Marie McArdle, Edna Martin and Ruth Ann McArdle.
Services: Monday, Aug. 7, 10:30 a.m., Mass in Queen of Angels Catholic Church, 209 W. 11th St., Port Angeles. A reception will follow.
Drennan-Ford Funeral Home, Port Angeles, is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials: Hospice of Clallam County, P.O. Box 2014, Port Angeles, WA 98362.
