Valjean Lawrence `Gene' Strickland
Dec. 24, 1940 -- Feb. 4, 2006
Former Sequim resident Valjean Lawrence ``Gene" Strickland, died of a heart condition in Apache Junction, Ariz. He was 65.
He was born to Earl and Bessie (Mathis) Strickland in Port Angeles.
He was attending Sequim High School when he moved to Alaska in 1958.
Mr. Strickland, who owned jewelry stores in Washington state, had homes in Olympia and Apache Junction.
Survivors include his wife, the former Patricia Anne Krasky; daughters Lori Elliott of Vancouver, Wash., and Lisa Berry of La Grande, Ore.; stepdaughters Tamara Conger of Lacey, Tricia Burk of Forest Grove, British Columbia, and Larissa Burk of Federal Way; sister and brother-in-law Shirley and Dwaine Urquhart of Auburn; brother and sister-in-law Bill and Patricia Strickland of Spanaway; and many grandchildren.
Services: Monday, Feb. 20, 2 p.m., celebration of life in Sequim Prairie Grange, 290 Macleay Road, Sequim.
Apache Junction Mortuary, Apache Junction, Ariz., was in charge of cremation.

Edna H. Tuttle
July 8, 1916 -- Feb. 14, 2006
Edna H. Tuttle died in Port Angeles of age-related causes. She was 89.
She was born in Bryant to Mathew and Mina (Hansen) Anderson.
In 1917, the family settled on the West End, first in Sekiu then in Forks, where she graduated from high school.
She married Ed Tuttle in Forks on March 8, 1941.
The Tuttles owned and operated the grocery store/post office in LaPush before they sold it in 1947.
They then operated Eddie's Fine Foods in Forks before relocating to Oregon in 1951.
After returning to the Peninsula, Mrs. Tuttle was a secretary at Port Angeles High School in 1966-76. She also owned and operated Shirley's Doll House on U.S. Highway 101 East in 1976-99.
In addition to being a member of Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, she played piano and organ for the Elks, Eagles, Rebekahs and Sons of Norway.
Survivors include sons Ed Tuttle of Port Angeles and Gerald Tuttle of Auburn; sister Eleanor Foyston of Seattle; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Her husband died July 21, 1974.
Services: Sunday, Feb. 19, 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., and Monday, Feb. 20, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., viewing in Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel, 105 W. Fourth St., Port Angeles.
Graveside service on Friday, Feb. 24, at 2 p.m. at Ocean View cemetery, 3127 W. 18th St., Port Angeles. The Rev. Julie A. Kanarr will officiate.
A reception will follow the service at 2624 S. Lincoln St., Port Angeles.

NINA P. CHAPMAN
August 16, 1921-February 13, 2006
Nina P. Chapman died of peripheral vascular disease and coronary artery disease in her Sequim home at the age of 84.
She was born in Los Angeles, California, to William Arthur Campbell and Mattie Pearl (Pollard) Campbell. Her family lived in Long Beach, California, from 1922 to 1932, where her father worked for her grandfather, Emerson Bristol Campbell (one of the pioneers in the oil industry on Signal Hill).
She graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in Long Beach, California, in 1938, and then graduated from Grau Business College. In 1939 she worked as a secretary for Magnetest Corporation in Long Beach, California.
In 1940, while recovering from a severe auto accident, Nina met her husband, Harold Wilson Chapman, and they were married September 29, 1940. Their first child, Reginald John Chapman, was born in 1942 in Long Beach, California.
Mrs. Chapman worked for Douglas Aircraft Co., in Long Beach, California, from 1942 to 1945, as a secretary. Her husband, Harold Wilson Chapman, enlisted in the Navy in 1942, and was in the European Theater from 1942 to 1944 during World War II and participated in operations at Arzu, Tunis, Bizerta, Sicily and Naples.
Their second child, Sharon Lee Chapman, was born in 1946 and her husband opened a sporting goods store in Long Beach, California. From 1946 to 1955, her husband, Harold Chapman, worked for American Wholesale Hardware Company in Long Beach, California.
From 1955 to 1958, the family traveled in an RV looking for a location where their son could survive with his asthma.
They became residents of Paradise, California, in 1957.
Nina Chapman worked as an administrative secretary at California State University, Chico, from 1958 through 1981. She retired in 1981.
Nina and Harold Chapman started traveling up and down the coast of California, Oregon and Washington in 1982. They established residence in Port Townsend, Washington, half of the year, where they fished to their heart's content, and the other half in Paradise, California.
In 1992, they moved to Evergreen Coho Resort, SKP park, in Chimacum, Washington. They moved to Sequim, Washington, in 1997 and became permanent residents in their home on Hendrickson Road.
As a 56-year member of the Order of Eastern Star, Nina Chapman belonged to Pilgrim Chapter No. 157 in Sequim, Washington. She was also a member of the Sequim Presbyterian Church, AARP, and Retired Public Employees Association Chapter No. 77 of Chico, California.
Mrs. Chapman's survivors include daughter Sharon Lee Chapman Jordan of Sequim, Washington; son Reggie J. Chapman and daughter-in-law Luly Chapman, granddaughter Holly Eve Chapman and grandson Daniel Noel Chapman, all of New Orleans, Louisiana; granddaughters Kelly Denise Parker and great-grandson Peter Desko Jr. of Albuquerque, New Mexico.
She was preceded in death by her brother, William Arthur Campbell Jr.
There will be no services.
Private inurnment will be in Tahoma National cemetery in Kent, Washington.

William C. Harris
Oct. 16, 1921 -- Feb. 13, 2006
Sequim resident William C. Harris died in Olympic Medical Center of coronary artery disease. He was 84.
He was born in Hot Springs, Ark., to Calvert and Alma (Clay) Harris.
He served 30 years in the Navy -- with duty in Virginia, Puerto Rico, Texas, Rhode Island and Minnesota -- before retiring in 1970 with the rank of commander.
Cmdr. Harris married Marguerite Sather in St. Paul, Minn., on Aug. 3, 1944.
He and his wife moved to Sequim in 1973.
He is survived by his wife; sons Bruce Harris of Seattle and Charles Harris of Phuket, Thailand; and two grandchildren.
Services: To be announced at Tahoma National cemetery, Kent. Sequim Valley Funeral Chapel, Sequim, is in charge.

Alan George Rohnow
Nov. 9, 1938 -- Feb. 5, 2006
Former Sequim resident Alan George Rohnow died in his home at Half Moon Bay, Calif., of cancer. He was 67.
He was born in Kenosha, Wis., to George and Lucille Rohnow and later moved to Lodi, Calif.
After graduating from Lodi High School in 1956, and the University of Pacific School of Pharmacy, Stockton, Calif., in 1960, he and his brother, Rollie, bought their first pharmacy in Dos Palos, Calif.
Upon retiring to Sequim in 1996 from his career as a pharmacy, Mr. Rohnow was a property developer.
He developed Sun Catcher Court lots near Dungeness Meadows, and his estate includes a farm on U.S. Highway 101 that is planted in lavender.
He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and Elks, and enjoyed golf.
Although Mr. Rohnow moved to Lincoln City, Calif., in 2003, he was a frequent Sequim visitor.
Survivors include companion Janet Robinson; son Gus Rohnow of San Diego; son and daughter-in-law David and Grace Rohnow of San Diego; daughters and sons-in-law Donna and Tony Woicekowski of Placerville, Calif., and Diane and Mike Glasheen of San Diego; and 10 grandchildren.
Also surviving are brother and sister-in-law Rollie and Donna Rohnow of Lake Tahoe, Calif.; sister Joyce Moe of Lodi, Calif., and sisters and brothers-in-law Beverly and Clayton Lilley of Canyon Lake, Calif., and Carolyn and Charles Chatfield of Clements, Calif.
Services: Saturday, Feb. 25, 3 p.m., private graveside memorial in Cherokee Memorial Park, Lodi, Calif. Cherokee Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

BETTY LOU KANIESKI
Mrs. Betty Lou Kanieski, died February 13, 2006, at the age of 83 after a long illness.
She was born October 14, 1922, in South Bend, Indiana, to Luella Fay (Grise) and Clyde Ely Myers.
In November 1942, in South Bend, she married Arthur Reasor. In 1956, they moved from South Bend to Madera, California. Arthur died in 1971.
She relocated to San Jose, California, to be close to family.
She married Henry C. Kanieski in 1975. They lived in Los Gatos, California, and moved to Sequim in 1992 to be close to her daughter and family. Mrs. Kanieski worked as an Operating Room Technician in Madera and San Jose, California.
She was a member of the Elks Lodge, Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Christian Women's Club, and the Newcomers Club.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Luella Fay and Clyde Ely Myers; brother John Myers; and sisters Claire Alice Myers and Kathleen Callsen.
She is survived by husband, Henry, currently residing at the Washington State Veterans Home in Retsil, Washington.
She is also survived by daughter and son-in-law Alice and James Barnett of Sequim, and son Gary Reasor of Port Angeles. Her twin sister B. Jane Goff resides in San Mateo, California, and her brother, Richard Myers, resides in South Bend, Indiana.
She had nine grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She loved to travel and spend time with family and friends. She was a loving, extremely thoughtful, caring person and will remain forever in our hearts.
Mrs. Kanieski was cremated, and a private memorial service and burial will be held in Madera, California, in the spring.

Dave A. Watson
March 11, 1926 -- Jan. 31, 2006
The obituary for Dave A. Watson, who died of cancer in his Sequim home at age 79, was published Feb. 9 on Page A8.
Services: Feb. 25, 3 p.m., memorial in St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 525 N. Fifth Ave., Sequim.

George W. Bretches
Aug. 15, 1918 -- Feb. 15, 2006
Port Angeles resident George W. Bretches died of age related causes at Crestwood Convalescent Center, Port Angeles. He was 87.
He was born in Elk City, Kan., to George Wesley and Hattie Pearl (Pitman) Bretches.
Mr. Bretches lived in Portland, Ore., from 1923 to 1938, when he entered the Army. He had worked for the Fiberboard mill in Port Angeles, then transferred to the Portland Fiberboard mill.
He married Barbara E. MacNamarra on Dec. 7, 1941, in Port Angeles.
Mr. Bretches served in the Army from December 1938 to December 1941, at Fort Worden in Port Townsend, and served again from April 1944 to October 1945, stationed at Camp Roberts, Calif., and in the Philippines.
A combat infantryman staff sergeant, he received the Philippine Liberation Medal with one Bronze Service Star.
In the meantime, he was in Port Angeles in 1942, where he worked for Sound Construction, building gun emplacements at Salt Creek.
After his second term in the Army he returned to Port Angeles to work at Fibreboard.
He later was owner/operator for Mayflower, 1959, worked for the state highway department from 1962 to 1980; drove a taxi for Blue Top; and worked in the Peninsula Daily News circulation department.
Mr. Bretches enjoyed gardening, dancing at the Eagles and Elks lodges, and reading western novels. He loved big trucks and his little dogs.
He belonged to the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Survivors include his wife; son and daughter-in-law Guy W. and Colleen Bretches of Port Angeles; daughters and sons-in-law Alice and Carl Alexander of Port Angeles, and the Revs. Patty and Eddy Edwards of Kerrville, Texas; 14 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by brother Calvin Bretches and sisters Irene, Pearl and Dorothy.
Services: Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2 p.m., memorial at Unity in the Olympics, 2917 E. Myrtle St., Port Angeles. The Rev. Barbara Wilson will officiate. A reception will follow the church service.
