Harriett Ethelyn Johnson Albertus
Nov. 7, 1920—Jan. 6, 2006
Harriett Albertus, Friday Harbor High School librarian and teacher from 1970 to 1991, has died.
Surrounded by family and friends, she died in her home in Sumner, Wash., from pancreatic cancer. She was 85.
Born in Clovis, Calif., in 1920, Harriett lived in California, Oregon and Washington. At 50, she returned to college — Eastern Washington State College — and earned a B.A. in General Studies and a B.A. in Education.
After student teaching in Sultan, Wash., she moved to Friday Harbor to teach at the high school and manage the library. She retired in 1991 after 20 years of service.
Ever curious, always learning, with a brave heart and giving spirit, Harriett shared her joy of living and positive outlook with family and friends. Her greatest joy was being a mother.
She is survived by her three daughters, Layne Williams (Monterey, Calif.), Christine Doe (Edgewood, Wash.), and Sarah Albertus (Salem, Ore.); her daughter-in-law, Nancy Albertus (Spokane, Wash.); eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Her son, Bruce Albertus, preceded her in death.
As she wished, there will be no public service. Remembrances may be made in her honor to Good Samaritan Foundation, Hospice Program Fund, Puyallup, Wash.

Marion Phyllis Lovejoy
In loving memory of our devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend.
M. Phyllis Lovejoy of Lopez Island died on March 3, 2006 in Anacortes. She was 78.
She was born on Jan. 11, 1928 in Oak Harbor, Wash., the daughter of Elmer and Lucille (Ensminger) Vogt.
Phyllis was an active community member devoted to the history of Lopez Island. She lived with passion and touched many lives. “You will be in our hearts forever.”
Phyllis is preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her loving husband of 59 years, Clark Lovejoy; three sons and daughters-in-law, Stephen and Holly Lovejoy, Daniel and Julie Lovejoy, John Lovejoy; three grandchildren, Lisa (Brian), Tracy and Heidi; and four siblings, Ardis Ronhaar, Joan Cheney, Robert Vogt and Jacque Eastman.
Funeral was March 7, 2006, 1 p.m. at Center Church on Lopez Island.
Arrangements are in the care of Evans Funeral Chapel and Crematory, Anacortes and San Juan Islands.

Edna McCauley
Edna McCauley, an islander for about 46 years, died Feb. 28, 2006 in Enumclaw, Wash. She was 87.
She was born on Oct. 12, 1918 on Lopez Island, Wash. She lived on the island for about 46 years and in Enumclaw for about 35 years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Sam McCauley; and her son, Jimmie McCauley.
She is survived by her daughter, Linda (Jim) Aumiller of Rock Springs, Wyo.; two grandchildren, Jerad and Staci Aumiller of Rock Springs, Wyo.; sister, Glee McCauley, of Enumclaw, Wash.
Funeral is March 6, 2006, 1 p.m., at Lopez Island Center Church with burial at Lopez Island Union cemetery. Service will be directed by Weeks' Enumclaw Funeral Home.

Zena Laverne Barnes
Zena Laverne Barnes passed away Feb 23, 2006 in Islands Convalescent Center from complications of a massive stroke suffered Feb 1 on Vashon Island, where she resided.
She was 87. She will be dearly missed by her family and friends. Laverne was a delightful and wise lady who was loved by many.
She is survived by her son, Mike Barnes, and daughter-in-law, Nancy, of Vashon Island; son, Steve Barnes, and daughter-in-law, Lynne, of Friday Harbor; grandchildren, Michael Barnes, Ted Barnes and Jan Cook of Seattle, Willis Barnes and Quentin Barnes of Vashon Island; great-grandchildren, Ashleigh Barnes and Robert Barnes of Friday Harbor and Milo Barnes of Seattle; sister Jo Frances Brewer, Graham, Texas; brother, Burl Scott, Big Spring, Texas; sister-in-law, Nell Barnes, Dallas, Texas; and stepmother, Stella Scott, Albuquerque, N.M.
The family wishes to thank the staff of Islands Convalescent Center for their incredible love and care of Laverne. Special thanks to Jean Staben, Judy Nash and Kirk Roderick for being there in our time of need.
Also thanks to Dr. Burk Gossom, Nurse Practitioner Susan Hill and Joann Mayo for their wonderful care, consideration and support to Laverne and the entire Barnes family.

Louise (Lisa) S. Craig
Lisa Craig, a resident of the San Juan Islands for many years, passed away Feb. 14, 2006 in Sedro-Woolley, Wash., after a five-month battle with lung cancer. She was 61.
Lisa was born June 16, 1944 in Oceanside, N.Y. She is survived by extended family and friends.
A remembrance will be held Feb. 20, 2006, at 161 Myers St., Eastsound, Orcas Island, from 3-6 p.m.

Robert Wesley Peterson
Robert Wesley Peterson of Friday Harbor passed away at home of a heart attack on Feb. 8, 2006. He was 76.
He is survived by his loving wife of 55 years, Nancy; sister, Audrey York; three devoted children: daughter Connie Shaw, sons Mark and Chris Peterson; eight grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
He was born July 29, 1929 in San Diego, Calif., and graduated from Ashland High School in 1947. He met his redheaded wife at the Fairmont Drive-In; they were married on March 10, 1951.
He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served in Korea from December 1951 to September 1952.
After the Army, he worked for AT&T; for 38 years. He supported the PTA and was a Little League umpire in San Diego. He was active in the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion. He was commander of Post 3787 and presented more than 385 flags to Boy Scouts and various service organizations. He was a true patriot.
He retired and moved to paradise in 1989 and built his home on Turn Point, where he enjoyed boating and writing. He remained active through the American Legion, 4-H and the Masonic Lodge. He loved the islands and the people here.
The family thanks everyone for their kindness and loving support.
A memorial service will be held on March 4, 1 p.m, at the Masonic Lodge.

Bruce Harold Best
Retired surgeon Bruce Harold Best died on Feb. 7, 2006, in Friday Harbor. He was 82.
He was born on May 30, 1923, in St. Boniface, Manitoba and was the eldest of James and Florence Best’s three children.
As a young man, Bruce excelled at playing hockey and swimming and enjoyed working on his grandfather’s farm.
After earning his medical degree from the University of Manitoba, Dr. Best worked as a general practitioner in Kelvington, Saskatchewan, providing medical care to First Nations people in remote areas. He later moved to Portland, Ore., to attend the University of Oregon Medical School for his surgical residency.
During his residency, he met nurse Beverly Schou and they were married in 1952.
Dr. Best later became a partner in the Broadway Medical Clinic in northeast Portland, where he maintained a successful medical practice until his retirement. In 1973, he was elected president of Emanuel Hospital, where he frequently performed surgery.
While living in Portland, Bruce enjoyed playing tennis at the Irvington Club and sailing his boat at Portland Yacht Club. He taught Power Squadron courses, including Navigation. He attended Westminster Presbyterian Church, where he served as a deacon.
Dr. Best was a member of the Army Reserve for 20 years, where he trained MASH units for medical support in the battlefield. He retired as a colonel.
In 1986, he and Beverly retired to San Juan Island, Wash., where Bruce kept busy working on his property. He loved to split wood, make trails and enjoyed running his John Deere tractor. He also designed and made furniture, picture frames and toys for his grandchildren. There was no job he couldn’t tackle. During his retirement years, he would often remark how there were not enough hours in the day.
Bruce was a loving and devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother. His kind and gentle nature made him a favorite to his patients and was what his family loved and admired about him most. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
Bruce is survived by his wife, Beverly, of Friday Harbor; daughter, Carol Richards; son, Chuck Best; daughter-in-law, Janice; and grandchildren, Brian and Christopher Best and Elizabeth Richards, all of Portland; and his sister, Betty Orchard, of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.
At Bruce’s request, no service will be held. Contributions in his memory can be made to the Emanuel Medical Center Foundation in Portland.

Bob Chambers
Bob Chambers died of natural causes on Saturday, April 29 at his home on False Bay.
Before his seven years here, he lived in New York City where he managed a touring company and produced and appeared in “Little Mary Sunshine” with Eileen Brennan. Later he spent a number of years in Hollywood producing radio commercials.
Retiring to his hermitage on the island, he still delighted in San Juan Community Theatre productions where he coordinated the Playwrights’ Festivals and appeared in “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum” and “Carousel.” He produced and directed Jacki Altier’s two concerts and co-starred in “Hello Dolly.” Most recently, Bob played the villain in “Dirty Work At The Crossroads.”
Bob was born in 1930 to Robert Nelson Chambers and Jean Berrie Chambers in Portland, Ore., where his sister Sally and brother Bill still live.
Bob served in the Army Signal Corps in Korea, then was graduated from the University of Oregon in 1955. He was a member of the ATO fraternity.
On Friday, May 19, at 4 p.m., friends are hereby invited to a gathering in his honor at the home of Les and Betsy Gunther at 588 Mountain Shadows Lane.

Ann Bender
“On the tail of a whale, ” Ann Bender, our beloved friend and devoted wife and mother, peacefully departed this earth April 29 surrounded by family and the music she loved.
Ann’s courageous battle with her disease and the grace and dignity with which she fought was truly an inspiration to all that had the privilege to take the journey with her.
Ann was born in Berkeley, Calif., Sept, 26, 1933 and graduated from U.C. Berkeley with a physical therapy degree.
A true lover of nature and the beautiful San Juan Islands, Ann was always happiest outdoors whether in her garden, hiking with friends, on the tennis court or just exploring South Beach with Bob, her husband of 50 years.
Ann was also a tireless volunteer and could be found anywhere, from caring for the animals at Wolf Hollow to the box office of the San Juan Community Theatre.
Ann was preceded in death by her son, Kirk.
She is survived by her husband, Bob; son, Joel, and wife, Nancy, of Hamilton, Mont.; daughter, Stacey, and husband, Justin Hall, of New Hampshire; four grandchildren, Ty, Nate, Jamie and Kelli; and three great-grandchildren, Ashley, Mia and A.J.
She is also survived by a brother, Warren, and wife, Laurie Halsey, of Monroe, Ore.; and her beloved border collie, Jack, who will miss their afternoon walks in the fields around Mitchell Bay.

Anthony L. 'Tim' Shepard
Former newspaper reporter and author Anthony L. “Tim” Shepard died April 10 at his home on San Juan Island. He was 80 and had an extended battle with throat cancer.
Born Jan. 23, 1926 in Milwaukee, Wis., to Francis P. and Elizabeth B. Shepard, he was raised in San Diego and New England. He graduated from Milton Academy preparatory school in Milton, Mass. and then attended Harvard University in Boston prior to serving as a corpsman in the U.S. Navy in the latter stages of World War II.
After the war, he returned to Harvard where he completed a bachelor’s degree in English. He joined the staff of the San Diego Union in 1953 and spent his entire 25-year newspaper career there.
Shepard married Ruth “Pat” Bradford in the 1950s. The couple later adopted three children: Thomas M. Shepard, Michael B. Shepard and Terry C. Shepard.
In 1976, Thomas Y. Crowell Company published his biographical novel about the life and times of his paternal grandfather, T.H. Shepard. Movie rights to the book were sold to a production company, but the film was never produced.
Shepard retired from the newspaper and he and his family relocated to Friday Harbor, Wash., in 1978. Pat Shepard died in October 1989.
On April 12, 1991, Shepard married the former Joan Linden of Manhattan, N.Y. on the island of Kauai, Hawaii, where the couple then lived for many years.
In his later years, they spent a great deal of time traveling in many parts of the world, but particularly in the islands of the southern Pacific Ocean. They spent summers on Salt Spring Island in British Columbia, Canada, and recently made San Juan Island their primary residence.
Shepard was passionate about his leisure-time pursuits and he particularly enjoyed sailing, swimming, snorkeling, tennis and snow skiing. His 40-foot sloop, Emily, won the prestigious Lipton Cup sailing event in 1967. He remained a member of the San Diego Yacht Club and for more than 10 years he served as captain of the Aliomanu Swim Team in Anahola, Hawaii.
Survivors include his wife, Joan L. Shepard of San Juan Island, Wash.; son, Thomas M. Shepard of Auburn, Wash.; son, Michael B. Shepard and daughter-in-law, Rhonda A. Shepard, both of Yakima; daughter, Terry C. Shepard of Bellingham, Wash.; brother, Thomas H. Shepard of Bellevue, Wash.; and two granddaughters, Lydia M. Shepard and Emily R. Shepard, both of Yakima, Wash.
Memorial donations may be made to the American Cancer Society or to a charity of choice.
