Thomas Franklin Waggoner
July 19, 1932 -- Feb. 20, 2006
Former North Olympic Peninsula resident Thomas Franklin Waggoner died of a brain aneurysm at home in Seattle. He was 73.
Mr. Waggoner was born to Lester Aaron and Mabel Ruth (McClaren) Waggoner in Pringle, S.D.
He married Beverly Ann Russell on April 4, 1964, in Coeur d'Alene.
Mr. Waggoner was self-employed in construction and worked in Oregon, Washington and Alaska.
He owned and operated Rice's Resort in Sekiu from 1977 to 1986
After his children graduated from Clallam Bay High School, he and his family moved to Seattle in 1986.
Survivors include his wife of Seattle; son Donald Waggoner; son and daughter-in-law Charles and Jennifer Puckett Waggoner of Seattle; daughters and sons-in-law Dawn and Dale Bechtholdt of Arlington, and Renae and Grant Erben and Sheryl and Fred Gibson, all of Seattle; daughters Kathy Waggoner and Lori Whitehead; brother and sister-in-law Lester and Neva Darling of Louisiana; sister and brother-in-law Linda and Bill Marshall of Kennewick; 13 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by son Kenny Waggoner, daughter Carolyn Britton, and sister Marcella.
Services: Saturday, Feb. 25, 10 a.m., memorial at Yarington's White Center Funeral Chapel, 10708 16th Ave. S.W., Seattle. A reception will follow at the Waggoner home, 12206 Eighth Ave. S., Seattle.
Memorials: American Heart Association, 4414 Woodland Park N., Seattle, WA 98103.
The family requests no flowers.

Mary A. Welch
March 27, 1914 -- Feb. 18, 2006
Mary A. Welch died of age-related causes in Sequim at age 91.
She was born to James A. and Frances Bella Hodges in Los Angeles.
She married Charles L. Welch in Los Angeles on Oct. 24, 1936. He died on Jan. 18, 2000.
Mrs. Welch received a bachelor's degree from Chapman College, Orange, Calif., in 1935.
She was an elementary and special education school teacher in Amador and San Joaquin counties in California.
A member of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers), Mrs. Welch sponsored two boys from Kosovo to stay in the United States.
She was also a member of Sequim Prairie Grange.
Survivors include son Daniel Welch of Crestone, Colo.; daughters Laurel Ann Norman of Sequim and Nancy Rowan of Santa Barbara, Calif.; two foster grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by daughter Jean Campbell.
Services: Friday, Feb. 24, 3 p.m., memorial in the manner of Friends (Quakers) at 303 Dahlia Llama Lane, Sequim.
Memorials: Hospice of Clallam County, P.O. Box 2014, Port Angeles, WA 98362.

KATHERINE A. DAUGAARD
Katherine A. (Babe) Daugaard passed away Thursday, February 16, 2006.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Delbert Daugaard, in 1999.
Babe is survived by her children, Kathleen Castello of Dallas, Texas; Daniel Daugaard of Port Angeles; and Barbara Bruntlett of Seattle, Washington.
Her grandchildren, Mitchell and Melina Castello, Megan, Sarah, Dylynn and Dalton Daugaard, also survive her.
Babe had many passions in her life -- her family, women's softball, fishing, bowling, camping, golfing and her friends.
She was also a lifelong member and supporter of Camp Fire Girls.
An open house is planned to celebrate the lives of both Babe and Del on March 17, 2006, at 540 W. 15th St., Port Angeles.

Danny A. Baxley
Nov. 20, 1957 -- Feb. 22, 2006
Port Townsend resident Danny A. Baxley died at age 48 of complications due to diabetes.
He was born in Lebanon, Ore., to James H. and Shirley M. (Sandquist) Baxley Sr.
Mr. Baxley was a sports enthusiast who enjoyed fishing and golf as well as playing darts, dice and cribbage.
He was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church.
Survivors include his parents, brother and sister-in-law Jim and Roxi Baxley Jr., and sister and brother-in-law Cheryl and Warren Caveness.
Services: Saturday, Feb. 25, 2 p.m., celebration of life in the Elks Lodge, 555 Otto St., Port Townsend. Kosec Funeral Home, Port Townsend, is in charge.
Memorials: Jefferson Healthcare Memorial Fund, 834 Sheridan St., Port Townsend, WA 98365. The family requests no flowers.

Frank Henry Smith
March 27, 1919 -- Feb. 21, 2006
Frank Henry Smith of Neah Bay died in Omak of age-related causes. He was 86.
He was born in Neah Bay to Frank and Bertha (Lane) Smith and was an enrolled member of the Makah tribe. He was also connected to the Lummi tribe at Bellingham.
He attended school in Neah Bay and at Chemawa in Oregon.
During Army service -- between March 21, 1944 and Nov. 30, 1945 -- Mr. Smith was attached to the 407th Infantry.
He was awarded the Purple Heart and Bronze Star for heroic achievement by refusing to leave his squad, although injured by shrapnel, during an assault. His marksmanship enabled his squad to have a successful operation.
Mr. Smith was a logger, fisherman and totem pole carver whose work is displayed throughout the world.
He married Leona Jerome on Oct. 2, 1939. She died Nov. 6, 1997.
Survivors include daughter Joanne Martin of Omak as well as daughter Gail Adams and sons Frank Henry Jr. and Raymond Smith and sister Leah Parker, all of Neah Bay; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
Services: At his request, none. Precht-Harrison-Nearants Funeral Home, Omak, was in charge of cremation.

Lloyd Hughes Starr
Sept. 12, 1937 -- Feb. 18, 2006
Sequim resident Lloyd Hughes Starr died of a stroke at Olympic Medical Center, Port Angeles. He was 68.
He was born in Winthrop to Lloyd Hughes and Eula May (Allen) Starr and finished his public education through 11th grade in Spokane before attending barber college, also in Spokane.
Before coming to Sequim in 1974, he was a barber in Spokane and Fairbanks, Alaska.
Mr. Starr's hobby included building wooden model airplanes, trucks and heavy construction equipment.
His first wife, in the mid-1950s, was Irene. He divorced Melody Smith in Sequim about 1976.
Survivors include sister Sonja Hall of Lake Havasu City, Ariz.; and sisters and brothers-in-law Genaveve Starr and Karl Stokke of Sequim, and Judith and Gary Dinsmore of Scappoose, Ore.
Services: Saturday, Feb. 25, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., reception at 251 S. Fifth Ave., No. 108, Sequim. Olympic Cremation Association, Port Angeles, is in charge.

Joseph James Urda
April 16, 1922 -- Feb. 21, 2006
Longtime Sequim resident Joseph James Urda died of congestive heart failure at age 83.
He was born in Jermaine, Pa., to Nicholas and Eva (Turpeka) Urda.
Mr. Urda was preceded in death by Margaret, his wife of 53 years.
Services: Saturday, Feb. 25, 1 p.m., memorial in Sequim Worship Center, 640 N. Sequim Ave. The Rev. Dave Westman will officiate.
Sequim Valley Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Linda M. Vandelac
Sept. 1, 1947 -- Feb. 21, 2006
Former Peninsula resident Linda M. Vandelac died in Burton Care Center, Burlington, at age 58 after a lengthy illness.
She was born in Gardiner, Maine, to Thomas and Marjorie (Bailey) Colpitt.
After schooling in Maine, she moved to Port Angeles in the late 1960s before relocating to Sedro-Woolley in the early 1980s.
Mrs. Vandelac helped with the family business at Silver King Resort for many years. She also worked in the food service industry.
Survivors include her companion of 25 years, Lee Hanson; daughters and sons-in-law Trina and Phil Carlisle of Winter Haven, Fla., and Barbie and Rod Farrell of Sedro-Woolley; two brothers, three sisters and six grandchildren.
Services: March 4, 11 a.m., memorial in Burlington Lutheran Church, 134 E. Victoria Ave., Burlington. Pastor Mary Bosell and Dick Grinstad of Burlington will officiate.
Skagit Cremation Services is in charge.

Charles Warren Wilson
Nov. 22, 1922 -- Feb. 21, 2006
Charles Warren ``Chuck" Wilson died in his Gardiner home at age 83.
Services: Sunday, Feb. 26, 3 p.m. to 6 p.m., visitation at the family home, 2291 Old Gardiner Road.
Memorial service on Monday, Feb. 27, at 12:30 p.m., in Gardiner Community Church, 1040 Old Gardiner Road. Graveside committal will follow in Gardiner cemetery, after which there will be a potluck dinner in the Gardiner Community Center, 980 Old Gardiner Road. The Rev. Greg Austin will officiate.
Kosec Funeral Home, Port Townsend, is in charge of arrangements.

DOLORES SEENA HAUGSTAD
Dolores Seena Haugstad, a longtime resident of Port Angeles, died Friday morning, February 17, 2006, at Olympic Medical Center. She was 78 years old.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Robert; and two daughters, Janet Smasal and her son, Jefferson Taylor Smasal, of Spokane, Washington, and Gege Haugstad of Cheney, Washington, and her daughters Manhattan Sunshine Berg of Medford, Oregon, and Seena Robin Berg of New York City.
Dolores was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois.
She met Robert as a young military man. They married October 10, 1946.
They traveled around the country and moved to Port Angeles in 1961.
Dolores had an active life. She was a great cook and enjoyed sharing her home with friends.
She retired from Pacific Northwest Bell when the local office closed in 1973. She was a member of Telephone Pioneers.
Dolores worked for Dr. Willard Henkes for nearly 20 years, retiring three years ago.
Dolores was a member of Sons of Norway and the first woman president of the local lodge.
She served as an International Delegate to the Sons of Norway and visited Haugstads in Norway and her relatives in Denmark.
She also was a local artist and worked in tole painting, rosemaling, watercolor and calligraphy.
Dolores was an inspiration to those who knew her for her courage and unending optimism.
A celebration of her life will be held on March 4, 2006, at 10:30 a.m. at the Sons of Norway Lodge at 131 W. Fifth St. in Port Angeles.
