Donna Lucille Brown
Feb. 11, 1940 -- Jan. 22, 2006
Port Hadlock resident Donna Lucille Brown died of cancer in Jefferson Healthcare hospital, Port Townsend. She was 65.
She was born in Seattle to Roy and Nancy Liona (Hill) Dunn.
She married Dwane D. Brown Sr. in Port Townsend on May 26, 1956. He died Dec. 15, 2003.
Mrs. Brown, who was a longtime Port Townsend resident, worked in the healthcare field for many years -- as a certified nursing aide at Kah Tai Nursing Home and Jefferson General Hospital (now Jefferson Healthcare) as well as providing in-home care.
Crafting, gardening and sewing were among her hobbies.
She was a member of Evangelical Free Church of Irondale.
Survivors include son Dan Brown and son and daughter-in-law Dale and Carol Brown, both of Port Hadlock, son and daughter-in-law Dwane and Jennifer Brown Jr. of Four Corners; daughter Donetta Brown of Chimacum; brother and sister-in-law Victor and Marie Anderson of Port Townsend; sisters and brothers-in-law Violet and Richard Twiggs and Susan and Robert Scalf, all of Port Townsend; and sister Gail Stamey of Atlanta. Also surviving are seven grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by brother Ray Anderson.
Services: Saturday, Feb. 4, 2 p.m., memorial in Evangelical Free Church, 681 Irondale Road, Irondale. The Rev. Dave Hodgin will officiate.
Private inurnment at Greenwood cemetery, Chimacum, with Kosec Funeral Home, Port Townsend, in charge.
Memorials: Jefferson Healthcare Auxiliary Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 1720, Port Townsend, WA 98368.

Luis Manuel Garcia
Nov. 21, 1956 -- Jan. 25, 2006
Luis Manuel Garcia died in Sequim at age 49.
Mr. Garcia was born to Antonia and Francisca (Pereyra) Garcia in Zacatecas, Mexico.
He worked as a bartender and restaurant manager and lived in Sequim for 14 years.
He was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church.
Survivors include his parents; brothers Antonio, Fernando, Vidal, Francisco, Martin, and Refugio; and sisters Carmen, Esther, Margarita, Rosalia, Juliana, Evangelina, Raquel, Maritona and Gayle.
Services: Monday, Jan. 30, 7 p.m., celebration of life at Las Palomas Restaurant, 1085 E. Washington St., Sequim. Burial will be in Mexico.
Drennan-Ford Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Jack L. Gross
June 9, 1918 -- Jan. 27, 2006
Jack L. Gross died in Sequim at age 87.
Services: Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2 p.m., Drennan-Ford Funeral Home, 260 Monroe Road, Port Angeles. Private interment Thursday, Feb. 2 at Tahoma National cemetery in Kent.

Andrew J. Lambert
Dec. 26, 1927 -- Jan. 25, 2006
Former Port Angeles pastor, the Rev. Andrew J. Lambert of Puyallup, died in Virginia Mason Medical Center, Seattle, at age 78.
Born in McLean, Ill., to Charles and Chloebelle (Hunter) Lambert, he married Phyllis McClelland on June 4, 1949, in Mount Vernon.
In addition to his serving as a pastor for more than 30 years with the Free United Methodist Church of North America, he and his wife provided care for more than 40 foster children. They served in Port Angeles for eight years.
The Rev. Mr. Lambert retired in 1990.
In addition to his wife, daughter and son-in-law Linda and Paul Ronco, son Nathan Lambert and foster son Joseph Kim, all of Puyallup, survivors include son and daughter-in-law Larry and Mary Lambert of Mount Vernon; brother Earl Lambert of South Carolina; 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Services: Feb. 11, 1 p.m., memorial in Hillcrest Community Fellowship, 1830 S. 13th St., Mount Vernon. Weeks' Funeral Home, Buckley, is in charge.
Memorials: Mission program at local church of choice.

Susan Elizabeth Wheeler
April 10, 1942 -- Jan. 24, 2006
Susan Elizabeth Wheeler died of cancer in her daughter's Sequim home. She was 63.
She was born in Washington, D.C., to Donald Niven and Mary Margaret (Lukes) Wheeler.
She was a 1960 graduate of Sequim High School and received a bachelor's degree in English from the University of Alabama, Birmingham. She received a teaching certificate from Portland State University.
Ms. Wheeler, who was a lifelong activist and member of the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom, worked as a legal secretary for the Oregon Law Center.
She enjoyed photography, traveling, camping and gardening.
Ms. Wheeler's survivors include daughters Erika Lynn Hamerquist of Sequim, Karen Margaret Hamerquist of Chico, Calif., and Jacqueline Williams Green of Chesapeake, Va.
Other survivors are brothers Stephen Francis Vause of Sequim and Timothy Lukes Wheeler of Baltimore, Md.; sister Marion ``Honeybee" Burns of Sequim; and four grandchildren.
She was preceded by brother Nathaniel Robinson Wheeler.
Services: A celebration of life will be announced. Miller-Woodlawn Funeral Home, Bremerton, is in charge of arrangements.

LUCIUS JOHN (JACK) BALLARD
A memorial service will be held at noon on Saturday, February 11, at the SunLand Golf and Country Club in Sequim for Port Angeles resident Jack Ballard, who died peacefully at home on January 24, 2006, at the age of 70.
Born to Lucius Ambrose and Lorna (Carmichael) Ballard in Seattle on April 7, 1935, he grew up in Ballard, graduating from Ballard High School in 1952 where he was a standout baseball player.
He graduated from the University of Washington in 1956 with a BA in sociology and criminology.
He won All-American honors in baseball. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity.
He served in the Navy and Naval Reserve from 1957 to 1963 until being honorably discharged as a lieutenant.
From 1958 to 1974, he worked at Family Life Insurance Co., becoming vice president of Corporate Systems and the company's representative for the construction of the Park Place Building and corporate headquarters in Seattle.
In 1974, he established and ran The Greenery Inc., a botanical services company, until its sale in 1990.
In the early 1980s, Jack was a founding member of the Central Washington University Presidents Associates.
In 1983, he married Susan Leinhos, also of Seattle. In 1989 they moved to the Peninsula, where Jack became a teaching professional and certified master club fitter at SunLand Golf and Country Club. He also worked for Ping as a club fitter.
On April 21, 2001, he was one of 58 Husky baseball players honored by being chosen for the University of Washington All-Century Baseball Team.
Jack's many interests over the years included fly fishing, sailing, skiing, skeet shooting, mentoring, the Civil and Second World wars, reading, astronomy, and, of course, golf.
He is survived by his wife, Susan; his children by his marriage in 1956 to Sherry Tagg (now Johnsen), daughter Kerri Ballard of Seattle and Mike (Marilyn) Ballard of Edmonds; grandchildren Taylor, Alex and Claire Ballard and Genevieve Beebe; and sister Barbara Carl (Bob) of Sequim.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in his name to Hospice of Clallam County, P.O. Box 2014, Port Angeles, WA 98362.

WANDA P. VIRGINIA RIX
Wanda P. Virginia Rix died January 25, 2006, at Kah Tai Care Center in Port Townsend after a long illness.
She was born July 6, 1921, in Chimacum to Abe Virginia and Myrtle Johnson Virginia. She was the granddaughter of Mary Ann Peckham Johnson of Hadlock.
She graduated from Port Angeles High School in 1939 and enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943. Her military service was extremely important to her, and she was very proud to have been one of the first women to enlist from Clallam County.
After her discharge from the Navy, she married Fred Rix of Roseburg, Oregon, who was in the U.S. Coast Guard stationed in Port Angeles. They spent many years in various duty stations in California with their growing family.
After Fred retired from the Coast Guard, they moved to Priest Lake, Idaho, where they both worked for the U.S. Forest Service.
She decided the winters there were too cold and they moved back to Port Angeles, where she worked for Olympic National Park until her retirement.
She moved to Port Townsend in 1992 to be near her daughter and grandchildren.
Wanda was a member of St. Mary Star of the Sea Church in Port Townsend.
She was also proud of her membership and involvement in American Veterans (AMVETS), Military Officers Association of America and the University of Washington Retirees Association.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred, who died in 1991, her parents and her brother, Ernest Virginia.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Fred and Wendy Rix of Port Angeles; her daughter, Renee Simpkins of Port Townsend; daughter and son-in-law, Renita and Randy Powers of Port Townsend; grandchildren, Amber and Christian Powers and Sasha Thomasson; and great-grandchildren, Timothy and Bradon Thomasson.
She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Alice Virginia of Port Angeles.
After retirement, she discovered a love of painting and painted many special pictures for her family. She also loved to garden and spent many hours with family and friends enjoying the beautiful flowers she had raised.
She was an excellent cook and enjoyed cooking for her family.
Services will be February 4, 2006, at St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church. Rosary will be at noon and Mass will follow at 12:30 p.m. Gravesite services will follow at Greenwood cemetery in Chimacum.
Memorial contributions may be made to AMVETS Post No. 1, 5717 S. Tyler St., Tacoma, WA 98409, or St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 1335 Blaine St., Port Townsend, WA 98368.

Albert B. Dyke
March 24, 1921 -- Jan. 24, 2006
Albert B. Dyke died in his Port Hadlock home following a long illness. He was 84.
He was born to George Henry and Kathryn (Draper) Dyke in Palatka, Fla., where he grew up.
He served in the Navy during World War II.
After graduating from college in Lakeland, Fla., Mr. Dyke went on to earn a master's degree in education.
After marriage to his wife, Margaret, he taught in Tucson, Ariz., before moving to Southern California, where he was a teacher and administrator for the Chino Valley Unified School District for 25 years.
He was a member of Chino Methodist Church and a Past Grand Master of the Masonic Lodge
Mr. Dyke retired in 1983 and moved to Washington, where he was a member of Lutheran Church of the Redeemer in Port Hadlock and continued his interest in fishing and working with his hands
His wife preceded him in death.
Survivors include companion Helen Kratz of Port Hadlock; daughter Kathryn Sims of Rialto, Calif.; daughters and sons-in-law Cecile and John Novak of Littleton, Colo., and Justine and Dan Cunningham of Chino, Calif.; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by sisters Dorothea Johnson and Justine Halsey.
Services: Feb. 4, 1 p.m., memorial in Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, 45 Redeemer Way, Port Hadlock. The Rev. Don Pieper will officiate.
Kosec Funeral Home, Port Townsend, is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials: Jefferson Healthcare Hospice, 834 Sheridan Ave., Port Townsend, WA 98368. The family requests no flowers.
