Clara Marie Averill
May 4, 1924 -- Jan. 2, 2006
Clara Marie Averill died of cancer in her Sekiu home. She was 81.
She was born in Chambers, Neb., to Alfred A. and Ruth (Peltzer) Walter.
She married Edwin G. Averill in St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Chambers on Dec. 31, 1959.
Mrs. Averill became a homemaker in Sekiu shortly after their marriage. She also worked at Ray's Grocery for several years before retiring.
After retirement, she began walking as a hobby. When her eyesight started to fail, friends made a track in her yard where she and her dog, Mee-too, could continue to walk together.
Mrs. Averill is survived by son Raymond Lee Averill of Port Angeles and sister-in-law Edwina Walter of Chambers.
Her husband died in July 1988, and she was also preceded in death by brother Raymond Walter.
Services: None. Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel, Port Angeles, is in charge.

Donald F. Casner
Jan. 13, 1922 -- Jan. 10, 2006
Sequim resident Donald F. Casner died in Olympic Medical Center, Port Angeles, of a heart attack three days before his 84th birthday.
He was born in Wooster, Ohio, to ``Pop" and Esther (Fischer) Casner.
During World War II, he served with the Army.
He worked for Crown Zellerbach Corp. from 1947 to 1982.
Mr. Casner joined Peninsula Golf Club in 1955. He also enjoyed music and dancing as well as gardening, fishing and traveling.
His 1946 marriage to Lesly Lawson in Port Angeles, ended with her death in 1979.
He married Martha (Nydegger) Olsen on Aug. 7, 1982.
In addition to his wife, survivors include daughters and sons-in-law Chrystina (Casner) and David Bruneau of Olympia, Lisa (Olsen) and Paul Kendrick of Port Angeles, and Rita (Olsen) and Kerry Noble of Portland, Ore.; and daughter Carla (Olsen) Layton of Sequim.
Other survivors are sister Hattie Sarkisian of Sacramento, Calif., and nine grandchildren.
Services: At his request, none. Olympic Cremation Association, Port Angeles, is in charge of arrangements.

Bettie E. Clark
Nov. 2, 1913 -- Jan. 9, 2006
Sequim resident Bettie E. Clark, 92, died of age-related causes.
She was born in Cordova, Alaska, to Charles Harold and Margaret Avila (Whalen) Scheffler.
She earned a bachelor's degree in business administration at the University of Alaska, and became director of alumni services for UA-Fairbanks.
She later was director of volunteer services at the University of Washington Medical Center in Seattle.
Mrs. Clark was an American Red Cross volunteer, chairman of emergency first aid stations and a first aid instructor.
Other interests included swimming and golfing.
She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church.
Her marriage to Robert Russell Harrop on June 3, 1936, in Fairbanks, Alaska, ended in a 1963 divorce.
She married John E. Clark on Aug. 17, 1970, in Valdez, Alaska. He died June 7, 1997.
Survivors include son Michael Charles Harrop of Santa Rosa, Calif.; daughters JoAnne Tripp of Bellingham, Patricia Harrop-Schumacher of Sequim, Joyce Marie Barnes of Ferndale and Margaret Theresa Rogge of Fairbanks, Alaska; sisters Kay Purcell of Mount Vernon and Frances Jackson of Seattle; 15 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.
Services: Private family memorial. The Neptune Society, Lynnwood, was in charge of cremation.
Memorials: Hospice of Clallam County, P.O. Box 2014, Port Angeles, WA 98362.

LaVerne A. Reifenstahl Fisher
Sept. 23, 1925 -- Jan. 4, 2006
LaVerne A. Reifenstahl Fisher died in Port Angeles after a long illness. She was 80.
She was born in Mount Vernon to Otto M. and Helen (Omholt) Quande.
She married Raymond L. Reifenstahl, who preceded her in death.
Her second marriage, to John ``Jack" Fisher, in December 1973, also ended with his death.
Mrs. Reifenstahl, who was a member of the Elks Ladies Auxiliary, retired from Sears Roebuck and Co. in 1986, after 30 years of service in Port Angeles.
Survivors include sons Von E. Reifenstahl of Amanda Park and Randy L. Reifenstahl of Yakima; son and daughter-in-law Brian L. and Patty Reifenstahl of Port Angeles; daughters and sons-in-law Rochelle R. and Bruce Chamberlin of Independence, Ore., and Debbie A. and Dan Begin of Corvallis, Ore.; brother and sister-in-law Leslie and Ardith Quande of Kent; 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Services: At her request, none. A celebration of life will be held later.
Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel, Port Angeles, is in charge.
Memorials: Charity of choice.

Paul E. Katilius
July 2, 1939 -- Jan. 1, 2006
Paul E. Katilius died in his Sequim home of cardio-respiratory arrest. He was 66.
He was born in Homestead, Pa., to Louis and Helen (Navickas) Katilius.
He was employed by International Harvester Co. in Kentucky for many years before retiring and moving to Sequim in 1980.
Mr. Katilius enjoyed meeting people, wildlife and flowers.
He is survived by his sister, Marie English, of Sequim.
Services: None. Sequim Valley Funeral Chapel is in charge.

Beatrice O. Kenagy
Dec. 20, 1923 -- Jan. 9, 2006
Former Peninsula resident Beatrice O Kenagy of Hoquiam died in Grays Harbor Community Hospital, Aberdeen, of metastatic cancer and a pulmonary embolism. She was 82.
She was born in Rolette, N.D., to Helge and Milla (Haagenson) Monson and grew up on the family farm in Pleasant Lake, N.D.
She divorced Duwain Miller in 1963 and married Robert Dale Kenagy in 1964.
She moved to Clallam Bay in 1973, where she had an in-home daycare and was known as ``Gramma Bea" to the children.
Mrs. Kenagy retired to Montesano. Following the death of her husband in 2001, she relocated to Karr House Assisted Living in Hoquiam.
Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law Dale and Ellen Miller of Olympia, Keith and Brenda Kenagy of Aberdeen; daughter and son-in-law Diane and Don Little of Aberdeen; stepdaughter Sheila McGahan of Westport; and six grandchildren
She was also preceded in death by brother Dennis Monson, sisters Hazel Matthews and Jeanette Allen, and grandson Philip Dike.
Services: Friday, Jan. 13, at 2:30 p.m., memorial service at Whiteside Family Mortuary, 109 E. Second St., Aberdeen.
A celebration of life will follow at the Aberdeen Elks Lodge, 204 S. Broadway.
Whiteside Family Mortuary, Aberdeen, is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials: Montesano Presbyterian Church, 201 E. McBride Ave., Montesano, WA 98563; or a children's charity.

EUPHEMIA (FAY) M. BASOM
March 23, 1909 - January 10, 2006
Mrs. Basom was born in Dunvegan, Isle of Skye, Scotland, to Jessie and Norman MacDonald.
She was the oldest of five children.
Her family immigrated to Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, in 1913.
She finished high school in Winnipeg and graduated in 1927. She then attended the University of Manitoba.
On September 8, 1933, she married George Simpson Linkletter, and the couple moved to Colorado.
After five years, in 1938, the couple moved to Seattle, where George worked for the Safeway creamery.
In 1942, they moved to Port Angeles.
Their only son, Robert (Robb) Linkletter, was born in 1947.
In the late 1950s, they purchased Macintosh Grocery and changed the name to Linkletter's Fine Foods. Then in 1960, they opened the Hum Dinger Drive-In, which became a local institution.
Fay worked as a bookkeeper beside her husband in these businesses.
In 1977, George Linkletter passed away.
Then in 1980, Fay married Vern Basom. Vern passed away in 1995.
Another great sadness in Fay's life was when her son, Robb, passed away in 1999 from cancer.
Mrs. Basom was a member and past president of Chapter BZ, PEO.
She was a member of First United Methodist Church, was a member of the United Methodist Women, where she held the office of Secretary and Sunshine Committee Chairwoman.
Fay sang in the church choir for 30 years.
She is survived by her sister, Shealagh Ann Ross, and her daughter-in-law, Beverly Linkletter.
Memorial services will be held at First United Methodist Church on January 14th at 1 p.m. Interment will be in Mount Angeles Memorial Park.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Olympic Medical Center Foundation or First United Methodist Church.

Margaret Faye Jakeway
Sept. 11, 1920 -- Jan. 7, 2006
Sequim resident Margaret Faye Jakeway died in Olympic Medical Center, Port Angeles, of ovarian cancer. She was 85.
She was born in Arco, Idaho, to William and Sadie Ann (Yotter) Van Sperry and grew up on a dairy farm in Montana.
While employed by Western Union, she transferred to Port Angeles, where she co-founded Olympic Peninsula Bible Book Store and met Clarence LeRoy Jakeway., whom she married March 18, 1954.
The couple worked a dairy farm in Carlsborg while raising their two daughters.
Mrs. Jakeway belonged to the Dairy Wives Association and was a charter member of the original farmers market in Sequim, where she was known for providing baked goods and flowers from her garden.
Mrs. Jakeway was one of the founding members of Sequim Bible Church, where she devoted her sewing skills to missionary projects and where she taught Sunday school for 60 years.
Survivors include daughters Barbara L. Thomsen of Kirkland and Carolyn J. McAndie of Sequim; brother Bill Sperry of Montana; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Her husband died in February 1989. She also was preceded in death by brothers Paul, Orville, Milford, Gene and Glenn Sperry.
Services: Saturday, Jan. 14, 11 a.m., memorial in Sequim Bible Church, 847 N. Sequim Ave. Pastor Dave Wiitala will officiate.
Sequim Valley Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials: Child Evangelism Fellowship, Sequim Bible Church, 847 N. Sequim Ave., Sequim, WA 98382.
