FRANKLIN H. GREENOUGH
A memorial service for Dr. Franklin H. Greenough will be held at Sequim Community Church on January 7 at 1 p.m.
Dr. Greenough died December 7, 2005, of congestive heart failure at the age of 73.
He was born May 2, 1932, in Spokane, Washington, to Franklin Wilbur and Emily Jane (Hawes) Greenough.
He attended elementary school in Spokane and graduated from Culver Military Academy in 1950.
In 1954, he graduated from Washington State University with an ROTC Commission. He was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity.
He served in the U.S. Army as 1st Lieutenant, spending his tour of duty in Europe.
In 1959, he married Joyce Humphreys. They had three children, sons Scott Franklin and Marc Richard and daughter Lynn.
In Spokane, he taught fifth grade from 1961 to 1963. From 1963 to 1964, he taught at St. Julian's School in Portugal.
He returned to college in 1965 and received his Master's in Education from Whitworth College. In 1968, he received his Ed.D. from the University of Idaho and completed a post-doctoral fellowship in Med. Education at the University of Washington in 1971.
He then taught methods courses in education at Montana State University.
In 1976, he accepted a position with the school district in Anchorage, Alaska, as Curriculum Director for Social Studies.
In 1991, he completed his teaching career after spending six years as a Social Studies teacher at Mears Junior High. During his career he was a leader in Junior Achievement, Economic Education for Teachers, and won several awards for teaching excellence.
He was on the Board of the Alaska Council of Economic Education and helped write an Alaska state history textbook.
In 1977, he married his wife, Faith (Petty) Hansen.
While they taught in Anchorage, they led student tours to Europe and, later on, adult tours. After their retirement in 1991, they spent two years teaching English in Thailand as Volunteers in Mission through the Presbyterian Church.
In 1993, the Greenoughs retired to Sequim.
Frank was involved with Habitat for Humanity, was a member of Sequim Community Church and chaired the Mission Committee as an Elder.
His many interests included music, theater, photography, woodworking, reading, sailing, RV-ing and travel.
He is survived by his wife, Faith; sons Scott of Cummins, Georgia, and Marc of Seattle; daughter Lynn of Portland, Oregon; stepchildren Krista Whitford of Poulsbo, Washington, Scott Hansen of Anchorage, Alaska, and Kara Pitt of Ashland, Mass.; 15 grandchildren; brother and sister-in-law Peyton and Donna Greenough of Sequim; sister and brother-in-law Richard and Carolyn Gengelbach of Spokane, Washington; and his stepbrother, Stuart Poston, and wife, Holly, of Olympia, Washington.

Sequim Valley Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Yulanda Elizabeth Carlson
May 17, 1917 -- Dec. 25, 2005
Former Port Angeles resident Yulanda Elizabeth Carlson of Edmonds died in Lynnwood of natural causes at age 88.
She was born to Tomaso and Rosina (D'Ambrosio) Carbonetti in Port Angeles, where she graduated from high school in 1935.
She married Myron Earl Carlson in Queen of Angels Catholic Church on Nov. 26, 1945.
Mrs. Carlson -- who graduated from Cornish School of Music, Seattle, in 1937, and Royal Academy of Music, Vancouver, British Columbia, in 1939 -- taught piano and was organist at Queen of Angels Church for 35 years.
She was also a patron of the Port Angeles Symphony and performed numerous piano concerts with various musical organizations.
Mrs. Carlson owned and operated Carbonetti's/Carlson's Grocery Store across the street from Lincoln Elementary School for than 50 years.
In addition to memberships in the Port Angeles Community Concert Association, of which she was secretary for 50 years, and Monday Musicale, she belonged to Beta Sigma Phi, PEO, Soroptimist and Cards for Cardiacs as well as other organizations.
She moved to Edmonds in 1997.
Survivors include son and daughter-in-law Tom and Jeri Carlson; daughter and son-in-law Chris and Bryan Braswell; three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Services: Saturday, Dec. 31, 11 a.m., memorial Mass celebrated by the Rev. Renaldo Yu in Queen of Angels Catholic Church, 209 W. 11th St., Port Angeles.
Solie Funeral Home, Everett, is in charge of arrangements.

Odessa Marie Nelson
March 30, 1983 -- Dec. 23, 2005
Odessa Marie Nelson of Sequim died of injuries received while skiing at Stevens Pass. She was 22.
Born in Port Angeles to Jeffrey Roger and Barbara Diane (Stubbert) Nelson, she was known on the Peninsula for performing musically in piano/vocal duets with her sister, Charisa.
Miss Nelson was a full-time student pursuing studies in music and education. She was completing her senior year with Lee University in Cleveland, Tenn., after transferring from Prairie Bible Institute in Alberta.
She was a member of King's Way Foursquare Church.
Survivors include fiancé Chris Niclas of Cleveland, Tenn.; her parents; brothers Andrew Nelson and Michael Nelson and sisters Charisa Nelson and Halleleyah Nelson, all of Sequim; brother Jeffrey Nelson of Seattle; grandparents Ada Chrisman and Vern and Bette Nelson of Ferndale; and great-grandmother Lola Bell of Ferndale.
Services: Friday, Dec. 30, 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., visitation in King's Way Foursquare Church, 1023 Kitchen-Dick Road, Sequim.
Funeral on Friday, Dec. 30, 7 p.m. at the church. The Rev. Michael VanProyen will officiate.
Sequim Valley Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials: King's Way Foursquare Church, 1023 Kitchen-Dick Road, Sequim, WA 98382 (designate for Widows and Orphans Fund or burial costs).

Mary Jane Richmond
March 10, 1929 -- Dec. 26, 2005
Former Peninsula resident Mary Jane Richmond died of cancer in Union. She was 76.
She was born to Frank and Mary Maude (Ward) Purvis, in Galeton, Colo.
She married Everett Alonzo Richmond in Galeton on Sept. 2, 1945. He died in 2000.
Mrs. Richmond moved to Port Angeles in 1947, and moved to Agnew to live with her son in June 2000. She moved to Hood Canal in 2003 to live with her daughter.
She enjoyed camping with her family, painting and crocheting.
She was a 49-year member of Ladies Eagles Auxiliary in Port Angeles and belonged to the Mason General Hospital Ladies Auxiliary.
Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law Everett and Bernice Richmond Jr. of Anchorage, Alaska, Paul and Terrie Richmond of Port Angeles, Rolan and Lori Richmond of Port Angeles, and Ramon and Penny Richmond of Aberdeen.
Also surviving are daughter Paula Richmond and companion Andy Bell of Hood Canal; sisters Beth Fierstein and Sadie Schraeder, both of Colorado; 12 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by brothers Merle, Bud, Sonny and Bobby Purvis; sisters Dorothy Miller and Delilah Purvis; and granddaughter Deanna Pinard.
Services: Thursday, Dec. 29, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., visitation in Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel, 105 W. Fourth St., Port Angeles.
Funeral in Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel on Friday, Dec. 30, at 2 p.m.
A celebration of life reception will follow at the home of Paul and Terrie Richmond, 1317 S. Pine St., Port Angeles.
Private burial will be in Mount Angeles Memorial Park, U.S. Highway 101 and Monroe Road, Port Angeles.
Memorials: Olympic Christian School, 3415 S. Peabody St., Port Angeles, WA 98362; or charity of choice.

Albert Eugene White
Sept. 27, 1926 -- Dec. 18, 2005
Albert Eugene White, 79, died in Sequim of multiple myeloma.
He was born to Albert Lauder and Amy (Burton) White in Odgen, Utah, where he married Myrene Knowles.
Mr. White, who was a graduate of Weber State University in Ogden, Utah, served in the Navy in 1944-47.
In addition to being a builder of custom homes, he worked on the flight line at Hill Air Force Base and did electrical mock-ups for Rockwell International in Seal Beach, Calif.
In addition, Mr. White, who was a general supervisor on staff as well as a team member on the General Ground Support System, received several achievement awards for his timely suggestions.
Survivors include his wife; daughters Susan White Gylling and Shelley White Holladay; seven grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by son Dane White.
Services: Private service was held in Sequim View cemetery with Richard W. Holladay officiating.
Sequim Valley Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

Ruth Maye Wittler
March 17, 1928 -- Dec. 19, 2005
Former Chimacum resident Ruth Maye Wittler of Retsil died of a heart attack in Bremerton. She was 77.
She was born in Hillard, Mo., to John Edward and Sara Lakota (Mayo) Medres.
After graduating from Poplar Bluff High School, Mo., she moved to Washington in 1942.
She earned a pilot's license and obtained a nursing degree from Green River College in Auburn.
She married Edward C. Wittler in Vancouver, Wash., on Feb. 20, 1967.
Mrs. Wittler lived in various parts of Washington and until recently was a resident of Chimacum.
She enjoyed flying her plane, square dancing, church and traveling, including trips to Branson, Mo., and Alaska.
Mrs. Wittler was a member of San Juan Baptist Church in Port Townsend.
Survivors include her husband in Retsil; stepson and stepdaughter-in-law Joseph G. and LouAnn Wittler of Camas; daughter Karla Treat of Chimacum; sister Lola Medres of Carson; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by brother Andrew Medres.
Services: Thursday, Jan. 5, 11:30 a.m., memorial at San Juan Baptist Church, 1704 Discovery Road, Port Townsend.
Private graveside service in Chimacum. The Rev. Dan McMillan will officiate.
Kosec Funeral Home, Port Townsend, is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials: American Diabetes Association, Puget Sound Region, 1730 Minor Ave., Suite 920, Seattle, WA 98101. The family requests no flowers.

GEORGE THOBURN MATTSON
George Thoburn Mattson died December 11, 2005, at the age of 81.
He was born in 1924 in Carney, Michigan, the son of the Rev. Swan and Esther Mattson.
He attended the U.S. Naval Academy, Cornell University and the Illinois Institute of Technology, graduating with a degree in chemical engineering and did graduate research in air pollution control for American Paint and Varnish Assn.
He later was registered as a professional engineer in Texas.
He served in the Army Air Corps in World War II and the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War.
After 20 years of designing and constructing oil refineries and chemical plants for companies such as Exxon, Upjohn, U.S. Rubber and the Venezuelan government in the U.S., Canada and Latin America, he moved to Port Angeles in 1978, purchasing the Aircrest Motel.
He has served as President and Treasurer of the Olympic Peninsula Travel Association, a director of the Port Angeles Chamber of Commerce, a founding member of the Port Angeles Business Association and was a sustaining member of the Independent Bible Church, to whose beliefs he enjoys and subscribes. In the words of St. Paul, ``to live is Christ, to die is gain."
He is survived by his wife, Svetlana Zhelniakova still waiting in Gomel, Belarus, for a green card to be issued by the INS; brother, Dr. Donald Mattson of Willmar, Minnesota; sister-in-law, Marilyn Mattson of Findlay, Ohio; step-daughter, the Rev. Sherry Johnston of Portland, Oregon; two granddaughters, Stacie Strasborg of San Rafael, Calif., and Alison McInerney of County Cork, Ireland; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at Independent Bible Church, 116 E. Ahlvers Road, Port Angeles, at 1 p.m. on Thursday, December 29. Pastor Michael Jones will officiate.
