SALLY SHRODE GIBSON
Sally Shrode Gibson, age 52, formerly of Evansville, Indiana, passed away Monday, Nov. 14, 2005, in Port Angeles.
Sally was born Sept. 16, 1953.
Sally graduated from Harrison High School. She had an AA degree from Stephens College, a BA degree from the University of Evansville, and a Master of Arts degree from Northern Illinois University in commercial education.
She was a teacher, having taught at Muncie Central High School in Muncie, Indiana, a high school in Houston, Texas, a high school in Quincy, Illinois, and at Lincoln Trails College in Robinson, Illinois.
She taught young men incarcerated in the correctional system at Robinson, Illinois. She was able to have several young men later attend and graduate from college, and they were grateful for her teaching and help.
Sally was a member of the Junior League and Alpha Phi sorority.
She is survived by her parents, Jean and Willard Shrode; her twin brothers, Scott and Dr. John Shrode and their wives, Susan and Ginny, respectively; and her nieces and nephews, Rob Shrode, Charles Shrode, Emily McKinley, Kelly Shrode and Ellen Shrode.
The Clallam County Humane Society, 2105 W. Highway 101, Port Angeles, WA 98363, and the Welfare for Animals Guild, P.O. Box 3966, Sequim, WA 98382, were Sally's favorite local animal rescue programs.
She would like to be remembered through donations to either or both.
Burial will be private. Drennan-Ford Funeral Home and Crematory Inc. in Port Angeles is handling arrangements, 360-457-1210.

VALDEMAR NELS LUTHER JOHNSON
Valdemar Nels Luther Johnson, a resident of Sequim for more than 30 years, died on Dec. 2, 2005.
Born October 4, 1912, in Wells, Minnesota, Mr. Johnson was a retired Foreign Service Officer, world traveler, student of history and politics, linguist and musician.
Mr. Johnson was honored as a distinguished alumnus of Luther College and received a Masters degree in Music from the University of Southern California.
Before entering the Foreign Service, he was a teacher of music, history and math.
In 1937, Mr. Johnson married Alice Elaine Griswold. They had three children before their divorce in 1966.
A fluent speaker of Norwegian, Polish and Russian, Mr. Johnson served in the Navy during World War II and retired with the rank of Commander in the Naval Reserve.
His Foreign Service career during the Cold War period took him to postings in Oslo, Warsaw, Washington, D.C., and Reykjavik, Iceland, where he met his second wife, Geraldine Stibbe, also a Foreign Service Officer.
He ended his career as the U.S. Consul General in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
Music, travel and people were lifelong passions. His first instrument was the violin, but he was also proficient on piano and at one time he was able to teach every symphonic instrument with the exception of the harp.
He and Geraldine traveled widely and co-founded the Sequim Lecture Society, which for more than two decades brought hundreds of distinguished speakers to the community.
In addition to his wife, Geraldine Stibbe Johnson, he is survived by his daughter, Annalee Johnson of Newburyport, Massachusetts; his two sons, Dudley Paul Johnson of Canmore, Alberta, Canada, and Allan Griswold Johnson of Collinsville, Connecticut; his brother, Erling Johnson of Minneapolis; and five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held in the spring, at a date to be announced. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made to the Christian Children's Fund, P.O. Box 26507, Richmond, VA 23261-6507.

BEVERLY JEAN MENEAR
Beverly Jean Menear, a resident of Forks, died on Dec. 1, 2005, in Salem, Oregon. She was 78 years old.
Beverly was born in Baker, Oregon, on Dec. 19, 1926, the daughter of Emmett and Mary Teeters Endicott.
She attended Prairie City High School in Prairie City, Oregon.
On March 24, 1948, she married Lyle Menear in Vancouver, Washington. They lived in Sweet Home, Oregon, until 1961 when they moved to Forks.
Beverly worked as the head Dietitian at Forks Community Hospital for over 25 years, until her retirement.
She and Lyle loved the small, close-knit community of Forks.
Above everything else, her life revolved around her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is survived by her son, Mike Menear and his wife, Carla, of Dallas, Oregon; daughters Linda Truman and husband, Dave, of Missoula, Montana, Tami Hemenway and husband, Ken, of Boston, Massachusetts, and Toni Willbanks of Forks; along with 37 grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lyle, in April 2005.
Memorial services will be held at a later date. Services are under the direction of Bollman Funeral Home in Dallas, Oregon

John Frank Cody
Dec. 17, 1930 -- Nov. 30, 2005
Sequim resident John Frank ``Jack" Cody died in Olympic Medical Center in Port Angeles of heart failure at age 74.
He was born in Trenton, N.J., to Samuel and Dorothy ``Dora" (Maniewitz) Cody.
He earned an associate's degree in electronics and worked as a television technician for Zenith Co.
He lived in Trenton, and Garden Grove and Santa Ana, Calif., before moving to Sequim.
His personal interests included playing chess, flying model airplanes and instructing round dance.
He belonged to Hi Jacks II round dance group Strait Wheelers Square Dance Club, and SARC Aeronauts.
Mr. Cody married Aileen Dunlop Cowan, who survives him, in Sequim on Sept. 26, 1986.
Other survivors include son Russell John Cody, stepson Vaughan Trapp and daughter Carol Lynn Selberg, all of Port Angeles; daughter Beverly Jan Richardson of Corona, Calif.; stepdaughter Sheila Lynn Trapp of Kent; brother Robert Cody of New York; sister Doris Morris of Fresno, Calif.; and two grandchildren.
Services: Dec. 16, 1 p.m., memorial and reception in Sequim Community Church, 950 Fifth Ave. Pastor Ralph Kieneker will officiate. Olympic Cremation Association, Port Angeles, is in charge.
Memorials: Olympic Medical Center, Cardiac Services, 939 Caroline St., Port Angeles, WA 98362.

James Joseph Halloran
July 16, 1919 -- Dec. 3, 2005
James Joseph Halloran died of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in Sequim. He was 86.
He was born to Peter and Bridget (O'Donnell) Halloran in Bronx, N.Y.
During World War II, he was stationed at Ediz Hook with the Coast Guard, serving as an aircraft mechanic.
Mr. Halloran, who was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Sequim and president of the Mary P. Dolciani Halloran Foundation, supported many educational and civic activities in Sequim and Port Angeles as well as abroad.
His personal interests included salmon fishing, cheering for the Seattle Mariners baseball team and anticipating the birth of his first great-grandchild later this month.
Mr. Halloran married Janice Tuttle in 1953; they divorced.
His 1980 marriage to Mary Dolciani ended with her death in 1985.
He married Conchita Gonzalez in Puerto Rico on Oct. 18, 1987.
In addition to his wife, survivors include daughter Denise Halloran, brother Roger Halloran and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by daughter Kathleen Halloran and brothers Martin Halloran and Eugene Halloran.
Services: Mass to be celebrated at a later date. Drennan-Ford Funeral Home, Port Angeles, is in charge.
Memorials: Hospice of Clallam County, P.O. Box 2014, Port Angeles, WA 98362.

Mabel Schaal Neal
June 23, 1920 -- Nov 26, 2005
Former Peninsula resident Mabel Schaal Neal died at age 85 while asleep in Vancouver, Wash. She had Alzheimer's disease.
Born in Bethune, Colo., to Edward and Regina (Frank) Schaal, she worked as a teenager as a live-in maid for a doctor in Yakima. She then was as a shipfitter's helper during World War II and did commercial fishing in Alaska.
She married Bill Neal in 1946.
The Neals farmed in Easton, built and operated a motel in Yakima, and came to Sequim, where they bought acreage and built a log cabin.
She moved to Vancouver, Wash., following her husband's death, to be near her son.
Survivors include son and daughter-in-law Bob and Kathy Neal of Vancouver, Wash.; brothers Melvin Schaal of Vancouver and Rolland Schaal of Yakima; sister Marion Johnson of Kennewick; and one grandson.
Services: Private cremation was under the direction of Straub's Funeral Home, Camas.

LORI APRIL PAULSON
Lori (Braun) Paulson, born January 9, 1958, in Redmond, Washington, passed away Sunday, November 27, at her home in Puyallup, Washington.
Lori's courageous, three-year battle with appendiceal cancer is finally over. Her pain is gone as she rests with God.
Lori was born to Walter D. (Buzz) Braun and Darlene Ray (Shirley) Braun, but grew up in Tacoma. She graduated from Lincoln High School, class of 1976.
Lori was married to Martin H. Paulson of Tacoma for 27 years. She gave birth to three wonderful children, Barbara Ann Johnson of Moses Lake, and fraternal twins Connie (Payne) and Scott Paulson of Sequim.
In addition to her mother, (Darlene Jensen of Graham, wife of Ivan Jensen) and children, Lori leaves behind seven grandchildren: Brandon and Rachel Payne of Sequim; Kaitlyn, Gabrielle and Lillyan Paulson of Sequim; and Matthew and Nathan Johnson of Moses Lake.
All of her grandchildren call her ``Sweetheart Grandma", a name she thoroughly deserves and loved.
Lori was predeceased by her father, Walter D. (Buzz) Braun, and her brother, Kevin.
She is survived by a sister and two brothers: Linda Velasquez of Lakewood, Don Braun of Fishhaven, Idaho, and Clayton Braun of Tacoma.
Lori is remembered for being an inspiration to everyone who knew her. Her continual optimism made her a joy to be around. Her ability to instantly befriend people and to genuinely care for them left her with many close friends.
Lori has requested that her remains be cremated. Her memorial service will be held at the United Methodist Church in Sumner, Washington, on Saturday, December 10, at 11 a.m.
The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the American Cancer Society in Lori's name.

FRANCES LILLIAN NELSON
Frances Lillian Nelson, 91, of Sequim died on Nov. 22, 2005. She was born in Seattle on June 24, 1914, to John Rickles and Harriet Olive (Croxford) Hight.
Fran was crowned Miss West Seattle as a young woman.
Fran married Robert Arthur Nelson on May 29, 1937. After starting their family while living in Seattle, they moved to Port Angles in 1950, where she began her long career of community service.
Fran became involved in many service clubs in the Port Angeles area, including Eastern Star, Rainbow, Tirzah Club, Daughters of the Nile, and the Port Angeles Garden Club.
She often served as club secretary, and was also the president of the Port Angles Garden Club and a National Council of Garden Club judge.
In the early 1960s, she and Bob moved to Sequim. Fran became involved in the Sequim Valley Garden Club, the Clallam County Fair Association, the Sequim Prairie Grange and the Sequim-Dungeness Valley Historical Society. She served in many positions in these organizations.
In 1966 she began her long tenure with the Clallam County Fair Association, starting as a board member and secretary and serving as fair manager for 15 years. It was a job she was devoted to and dearly loved.
She was a creative force, and her many talents included painting, floral design and gardening, and sewing and photography. Fran worked as a florist for Rose Lee in Sequim and Baker Bluff Floral in Port Angeles.
Fran taught us all by doing. She was rarely idle, and when she took something on she did it with gusto. Her family learned by example that halfhearted efforts were not acceptable. She taught us to give freely of our time and talents, and she was always ready to help out with any task.
Fran was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Bob, on March 13, 1990.
She is survived by her children, Susan Murakami (Richard) of Bellevue, Judy Lidstom-Carlson (Roy) of San Diego, Catherine Armacost (William) and Rob Nelson (Donna) all of Sequim; her grandchildren, Judy Granlee-Gates (Joe) of Poulsbo, Jeff Granlee (Ann) of Kingston, David Murakami and Stephen Murakami (Alma), all of Bellevue, Chris Lidstrom (Tewey) of Canada, Erika Lidstrom of San Diego, Steve Nelson and Christina Nelson, both of Kent, Will Armacost, Joshua Jensen, Alexi Nelson and Bethany Jensen, all of Sequim; and three great-grandchildren, Greer Gates of Poulsbo, Ava Granlee of Kingston and Hayden Murakami of Bellevue.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial donations be made in Fran's name to the Sequim Prairie Grange Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 201, Sequim, WA 98382.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, December 4th, at the Sequim Prairie Grange, Macleay Road, Sequim, at 2 p.m. with a reception to follow.
