Florence `Flo' Louise Deitz
Jan. 19, 1932 -- March 7, 2005
Long time Port Angeles resident Florence ``Flo" Deitz died of cancer at her home at age 73.
Mrs. Deitz was born to Michael and Elizabeth (Golombeski) Adamski in Royalton, Minn., where she attended school.
She married Raymond L. Deitz in Port Angeles on Oct. 22, 1988.
Mrs. Deitz worked in various medical offices as a registered nurse.
She enjoyed animals and cooking, having a collection of cookbooks totaling about 1, 000 volumes. Other hobbies included gardening and square dancing.
Mrs. Deitz belonged to The Angeles Circle O, Wheelin Dealers & Far Western square dance clubs, Agnew Helpful Neighbors and the Peninsula Friends of Animals.
She is survived by her husband of Port Angeles.
She was preceded in death by brother Clarence Adamski.
Services: Monday, March 14, visitation from 1 to 5 p.m. at Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel, 105 W. Fourth St., Port Angeles.
The funeral service will begin at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, March 15, at Queen of Angels Catholic Church, 209 W. 11th St., Port Angeles, with Father Kurt Nagel officiating. Private interment at Mount Angeles cemetery.
Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Everette L. Losey
Mar. 23, 1921 -- Mar. 5, 2005
Former Port Angeles resident Everette L. Losey died at his home in Clay Center, Kan., at age 83. Cause of death is pending.
Mr. Losey was born to Charles S. and Pauline (Petermeyer) Losey in Clay County, Kan.
From 1941 to 1946, Mr. Losey served in the Coast Guard, and his duty stations included Port Angeles.
His first marriage to Dorothy L. Randle on May 20, 1943, ended in divorce in 1970.
Mr. Losey married Patricia Ward Rice in Nevada on June 2, 1977. She preceded him in death in 1985.
In 1957, Mr. Losey returned to Port Angeles where he operated Shell service stations before opening Ev's Automotive in the late 1960s.
He moved to California in 1970, and returned to Clay Center, Kan., in 1989.
He was a member of the Elks Lodge and American Legion.
Survivors include son and daughter-in-law Bryce and Sue Losey of Port Angeles; daughters Anita Kirkman and Claudette Mingori, both of Port Angeles; stepdaughters Valerie Gregerson and Donelle Ferguson of California and Cheri Reynolds of Texas; brother Chuck Losey of Clay Center, Kan.; sister Lois Norris of Riley, Kan.; six grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several step-grandchildren.
Services: There was cremation. Neill-Schwensen & Rook Funeral Home in Kansas was in charge of arrangements.

Ada Emma McElravy
April 26, 1900 -- March 9, 2005
Ada Emma McElravy died of a stroke in Port Angeles at age 104.
Mrs. McElravy was born to pioneer families John and Emma (Draper) Stevens in Port Angeles and raised at Mount Pleasant, where she attended school.
She married Leon F. McElravy on March 27, 1920.
Mrs. McElravy was a salesclerk and bookkeeper, and worked at the state liquor store and Knudsen's, and owned and operated Mode O'Day. She retired in 1962.
She enjoyed hunting, fishing and clamming. She enjoyed cooking and planted her vegetable garden every year until 1998.
Her favorite place was Johnnie's Meadow, her father's homestead at the current site of Hurricane Ridge Lodge. After the federal government made it a national monument and her father died in 1909, the families continued to drive cattle there in the summer months until it became a national park.
Mrs. McElravy was a volunteer for many organizations including the Ground Observers Corps, Chamber of Commerce, and Navy Mothers. She received a commendation from the U.S. Army for continuous service as an airplane spotter at the Port Angeles tower.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church and Daughters of the American Revolution.
A diehard Democrat, she founded the Harry Truman Club in 1967.
Survivors include four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband in June 14, 1982, son Donald F. McElravy in 1998, brothers Frank Stevens, and Dr. John Stevens, and sisters Eva Harrington and Alice Riely.
Services: Wednesday, March 16, 1 p.m., graveside service at Ocean View Mausoleum. There will be a family viewing from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel in Port Angeles.
Harper-Ridgeview is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials: Seattle Children's Hospital, 4800 Sand Point Way N.E., Seattle, WA 98105.

Edward James Stringer
July 30, 1923 -- March 9, 2005
Port Angeles resident Edward James Stringer, a retired Air Force master sergeant, died of pneumonia following a long fight with Parkinson's disease at age 81.
Sgt. Stringer was born to Edwin Lawrence and Mary Ellen (Dowd) Stringer in Maltby. He graduated from Snohomish High School and Peninsula College.
Mr. Stringer served in the Army Air Corps in World War II as a radio operator gunner.
He was stationed in England, from where he flew several missions over Germany until he was shot down and taken captive. He was freed when the Russian forces threatened the German captors, who vacated the prison camp so that Sgt. Stringer and others could escape the camp and travel to the British line.
He was discharged on Nov. 29, 1945, and rejoined the Air Force on Aug. 20, 1951. He served in the Korean War, the Cuban crisis and the Vietnam War as a radio operator, flying more than 1, 000 missions.
He was stationed in various countries in Europe and Asia and several bases in the United States. He served in the Diplomatic Corps in Denmark.
Following retirement in 1970, he worked as a deputy sheriff at Shelter Bay, near La Conner.
Mr. Stringer was an avid hunter and fisherman. He went to Alaska as a youth and after his retirement he served as a cook and deck hand.
He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, AXPOW, and Sequim Masonic Lodge. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Port Angeles, the Order of the Eastern Star of Sequim, and Disabled Veterans of America.
His first marriage to Betty Jean Mullen and his second marriage to Lisa Scnor ended in divorce.
Survivors include his wife of 27 years, the former Evelyn Kirner, of Port Angeles; sons Mark Stringer of Oroville, Calif. and Michael L. Stringer of Port Angeles; daughter Patricia Luce of Middletown, Calif.; stepsons Steven Champion and Harry Ripley, both of Port Angeles, and Hugh Champion of Sequim; stepdaughters Connie Porter of Ferndale and Catherine Longacre of Fortine, Mont.; sisters June Klaudt of Clarkston, Faye Kennedy of Colville, and Dolores Moore of Cle Elum; brother Merle Nortum of Colorado Springs, Colo.; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Services: Sunday, March 20, 2 p.m., Sequim Masonic Temple, 700 S. Fifth St., Sequim.
Memorials: Any military organization or Parkinson's Foundation, 650 W. 168 St., New York, N.Y. 10031.

Woodrow Peter Ward
May 22, 1919 -- March 11, 2005
Sequim resident Woodrow Peter Ward died of respiratory failure at age 85.
Sequim Valley Funeral Chapel, Sequim, is in charge of arrangements.

Adelia N. Wickstrom
April 10, 1923 -- March 8, 2005
Adelia N. Wickstrom died in Forks at age 81.
Born in Nehalem, Ore., to Bill Arthur and Dolly Vieva (Schoonover) Ewan, she moved to Forks four years ago.
She married Burton Ellsworth Wickstrom in Vancouver, Wash., on March 17, 1999.
Mrs. Wickstrom enjoyed gardening, camping, reading and crocheting.
Survivors include daughters Beverly Larson of Forks and Debbie Chase of Chehalis; brother Ray Ewan of Nehalem, Ore.; sister Toby Seaman of Dallas, Ore.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Services: Saturday, March 19, 1 p.m., graveside at the American Legion cemetery in Nehalem, Ore. The Rev. Dr. Scott Allen will officiate. A reception in Nehalem United Methodist Church will follow the service.
Mount Olympus Funeral Home, Forks, is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials: American Diabetes Association, P.O. Box 2680, North Canton, OH 44720.
The family requests no flowers.

Elvan N. `Al' Courtney
May 9, 1928 -- March 10, 2005
Elvan Neil ``Al" Courtney, former president of the board of trustees of the Sequim-Dungeness Valley Museum and Arts Center and retired certified property manager, real estate broker and developer, died from lung cancer at his home in Sequim at age 76.
He was born in Sequim to Ted and Evangeline Pearl (Cudaback) Courtney.
In 1946, he graduated from Sequim High School, where he played football and was student body president.
Mr. Courtney married Roseann Dalton in 1953. She died in 1964.
He married Sara Higbee Best, a teacher, in Anchorage, Alaska, in June 1978.
Mr. Courtney joined the Air Force in January 1947. As a staff sergeant in Alabama, he was a weather observer.
He recalled that ``when I returned to Sequim [from the Air Force], I helped a friend in his logging operation and finally ended up in Alaska for 38 years."
In Alaska he worked in real estate, property management and state government.
He served on the Anchorage City Council for four years and was Alaska state commissioner of commerce in 1965 and 1966.
He ran unsuccessfully for the Clallam County Charter Review Commission in 2001.
``I wish to guard against the expansion of government which creates additional taxes, " he said when asked why he was seeking election.
At the Sequim museum, he was responsible for the production of two hard-cover books about the pioneer families of the Sequim-Dungeness Valley area.
The pioneers included the Courtney family, which came to Sequim in the fall of 1925 after homesteading near Yellowstone National Park.
Mr. Courtney was born in the family home on upper Palo Alto Road. He milked cows and did work for local farmers while going to school.
``I always intended to return to Sequim, " Mr. Courtney wrote in Sequim Pioneer Family Histories From 1850 - World War II, the first of the two books he edited.
``In 1981 while attending a class reunion, my wife immediately liked the area, and we bought our farm in Agnew where we raised llamas and hay until this year [2000].
``We commuted until 1994, when we ended all business ties in Anchorage."
In August 2004, about 50 Sequim Sunrise Rotary Club members turned out to clean, weed, plant and put down gravel outside the museum as a community service project.
Club Community Service Director Dave Mandell proclaimed it as ``Al Courtney Day" in honor of the museum board president, who was then ailing.
Mr. Courtney was a member of the Elks Lodge in Alaska, The Institute of Real Estate, Sequim Rotary Club and held the title of certified property manager emeritus after retirement.
He was also a well-known golfer who played in many local tournaments.
Survivors include his wife of Sequim; sons Ralph Courtney and Michael Courtney, both of Anchorage; and daughters Laurie Shore and Anna Franks, all of Anchorage, Arla Clark of Port Angeles and Amanda Spell of Mukilteo.
He was preceded in death by brother Dale Courtney and sister Dorothy Cothrell.
Services: Wednesday, March 16, 2 p.m., memorial at Sequim Community Church, 950 N. Fifth Ave., Sequim. The Rev. Arthur Seely will officiate.
A reception will follow at the church. Burial in Sequim View cemetery. Sequim Valley Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
Memorials: Sequim-Dungeness Valley Museum and Arts Center, 175 W. Cedar St., Sequim, WA 98382.
