Gerald F. Lamp
Nov. 23, 1917 -- March 5, 2005
Sequim resident Gerald F. Lamp died of natural causes at age 87.
He was born in St. Mary's, W.Va., to Franklin and Odessa (Owens) Lamp.
He served in the Army in 1937-41 as a staff sergeant in Fort Douglas, Utah, before being discharged at Fort Richardson, Alaska.
Mr. Lamp's civilian career included working in the Quick Crete business, as a marine mechanic and as a welder, banana boat crew member, circus crewman and gasoline station owner.
In addition to enjoying travel, he liked to entertain friends, collect brass, design jewelry and excavate petrified fish.
Mr. Lamp's marriages to Helen Swan and Gertrude Stewart ended in divorce; his wife, Kathleen Bell O'Connell, whom he married in Mexico, preceded him in death on Nov. 25, 2001.
Survivors include son Gary Lamp of Dana Point, Calif.; son and daughter-in-law Rox and Elsie Lamp of Pocatello, Idaho; daughter and son-in-law April and Pasquel Vega of Phoenix; brother Don Richard Lamp of Oregon; sister Betty Loraine Lamp Carlson of Florida; 10 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by brother Jim Byron Lamp and sister Thelma Lucille Lincoln.
Services: Monday, March 21, 10-10:45 a.m., visitation in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 815 W. Washington St., Sequim, directly followed by the funeral at 11 a.m.
Burial will be in Blyn cemetery, after which a reception will be held in the church.
Drennan-Ford Funeral Home, Port Angeles is in charge of arrangements.

Louise G. Romer
Jan. 25, 1911 -- March 12, 2005
Sequim resident Louise G. Romer died of congestive heart failure in Port Angeles. She was 94.
She was born to Charles and Rose (Goldman) Smith in Manhattan, N.Y., where she attended grade school and high school.
She married Howard Romer, who died on Aug. 29, 1976.
Mrs. Romer was a telephone operator for the New York telephone company and a waitress in New York.
In Port Angeles, she was a volunteer in the education department at Olympic Memorial Hospital for five years.
Mrs. Romer enjoyed bingo, crossword puzzles and the song ``New York, New York."
She belonged to Holy Trinity Lutheran Church and was also a member of Circle of Friends Club and the Adult Action Center.
Survivors include daughters and sons-in-law Judy and Sal D'Amico of Port Angeles and Carolyn and Paul Sperling of Melbourne, Fla.; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Services: Friday, March 18, 11 a.m., memorial at Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel, 105 W. Fourth St., Port Angeles. The Rev. Charles Mays will officiate.
Reception will follow at Queen of Angels Catholic Church, St. Ann's Room, 11th and Oak streets, Port Angeles.
Burial at Pinelawn National cemetery in New York.
Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel is in charge.
Memorials: American Heart Association, 4414 Woodland Park Ave. N., Seattle, WA 98103.

GARLAND STURM
Former Sequim resident Mr. Garland Sturm, 77, died March 7, 2005, in Temecula, California, from medical problems that he courageously fought for months, but in the end finally claimed him.
Born April 14, 1927, in Tacoma, Washington, and regarded as a man of great passion, Garland married his passionate equal in his wife and best friend of 37 years, Jeanne Sturm.
The two shared numerous life-enriching experiences together, such as long romantic walks along the enchanting beaches of Hawaii and fishing in the remote mountain lakes of Alaska.
Following graduation from Rogers High in Spokane, Washington, in 1946, Garland set his sights on conquering the business world.
After graduating from vocational business school, he began a distinguished career in the restaurant supply and design business where he was employed for more than 40 years. He also knew the industry from an owner's perspective, running a supper club and a fast food restaurant in Spokane, Washington, from 1963-1967.
Recognizing the abundant opportunities resulting from the Alaskan pipeline construction boom, he moved to Alaska in 1967 to join Northwest Hotel Supply Co. in Anchorage.
In 1979, he moved to Seattle where he became an equipment specialist for the Smith and Greene Company, where he held various management positions playing a key role in the company's growth and prosperity.
Co-workers and friends found his optimism endless, his passion infectious, and his integrity inspirational.
Absolutely loving his work and the warm and close personal and business relationships it brought him, he was professionally active well into his retirement years, complementing work activities with camping trips, golf outings, walks with his dogs, and cozy nights glancing at the TV while quenching his voracious reading appetite with Jeanne at his side.
He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law Connie and George Rhodes of Spokane, Washington; son and daughter-in-law, Curt and Luz Sturm of Temecula, California; stepdaughter Hosana Lahaie of Chugiak, Alaska, and stepson Mike Lawless of Two Rivers, Alaska.
Additionally, he leaves behind 11 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. His loving wife, Jeanne, preceded him in death.
Everyone loved the Big Fish.

CLAIRE MINNIE SIMPSON
June 27, 1918-Jan. 26, 2005
Claire Minnie Simpson died in Sequim, Washington, of heart complications at the age of 86.
Claire was born in Wyoming but grew up in Wilmington, California.
She was an accomplished pianist, majoring in music at USC.
She became an elementary school teacher in California and later taught music and dance in Texas.
Claire and her second husband, Joe, moved to Sequim in the early 1980s. Claire and Joe were musical performers playing throughout the North Olympic Peninsula.
A celebration of her life will be held on Friday, March 18, at Danny's Country Place, 609 W. Washington St., Sequim, at 2 p.m.
Survivors include her brother, Wilber Thomas of Prescott, Arizona; niece Claire Fritz of San Diego, California; and nephews Charles Thomas of Vista, California, and Donald Thomas of Powell, Wyoming.

JOSHUA RANDOLPH PETTY
Josh was born March 31, 1987, in Port Angeles and died March 10, 2005.
We often teased him about being an hour and a half shy of being an April Fool's baby.
Josh was a very loving and giving young man. He was loved in return by all who knew him. He had an infectious personality. He could win you over with just a wink of his blue eyes and a crooked smile.
His interests included cars, music and good movies.
He played in Little League as a young child and could hit the ball way out of the park.
He always dreamed of the day he would get his license, and pored constantly over Auto Trader magazines for the perfect ride. Sadly, that day will never come.
He is survived by two sets of loving parents: Mark and Leann Stoughton of Port Angeles and Randy and Tina Petty of Sequim.
His sister and brother-in-law, Sarah and Kedrick Hulett, are in Bellingham. His brother, Chris Stoughton, is in Port Angeles. His paternal grandparents, Ken and Pearl Martini, reside in Oregon.
He was preceded in death by his maternal grandparents, Dick and Barbara Helpenstell of Port Angeles.
Te amo con todo mi corazôn.

Lois L. Tatum
July 11, 1921 -- March 12, 2005
Sequim resident Lois L. Tatum died in Olympic Medical Center, Port Angeles, at age 83.
She was born to Daniel and Marjorie (Martin) Giard in Kennewick, which was her home for more than 40 years.
She served in the Navy during World War II and married William ``Bill" Tatum in Pensacola, Fla., on Feb. 10, 1945.
The Tatums moved to Gardiner in 1970 and to Sequim in 1998.
She was an experienced hairdresser and active in the community.
Mrs. Tatum is survived by son Dan Tatum of Gardiner; daughter and son-in-law Carmen and Bill MacNeil of Edmonds; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Her husband died Aug. 4, 1986.
Services: Monday, March 21, 1 p.m., memorial in Gardiner Community Church, 1040 Old Gardiner Road, Gardiner. Pastor John Morgan will officiate.
A reception will follow in the Gardiner Community Center on U.S. Highway 101. Sequim Valley Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Ann H. Kellett Brewer
Oct. 7, 1949 -- March 20, 2005
Ann H. Kellett Brewer, journalist, community activist and Peninsula College instructor, died at home in Port Angeles from complications of cancer.
Her husband and mother were at her bedside.
She was 55.
Mrs. Brewer was born in St. Louis, Mo., to William H. and Dorothy (Hagen) Kellett.
She graduated from the University of Missouri at Columbia in 1971, majoring in journalism and French.
She also studied at the Sorbonne in Paris.
She worked in Sydney, Australia, for The Daily Telegraph and Cleo magazine as a writer and editor from 1972-74.
She joined the Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) News and Sun-Sentinel in 1976 and rose to become editor of its lifestyle section.
From 1986-87, she was managing editor of The Register in Shrewsbury, N.J.
In 1988 she became managing editor of Lesher Communications in Contra Costa County, Calif., responsible for overseeing news operations of its four daily newspapers in San Francisco's East Bay region.
From 1991-92, she was the founding editor of The New York Times News in Review, a biweekly Russian-language edition of The New York Times edited for readers in Russia and the other republics of the former USSR.
It was the first foreign-language edition of The Times and was published in a joint venture with the Moscow News.
She won many writing, editing and newspaper page design awards during her journalism career.
From 1993 to 1999, Mrs. Brewer owned and operated Dream Baskets, a gift basket and gift wrapping business in New York City and Westchester County, N.Y., before moving to Port Angeles to join her husband, John, who had become editor and publisher of the Peninsula Daily News.
From 2000 to June 2004, she taught Communication Careers and Issues at Peninsula College, operated her own company, A Kellett Brewer Design, and was a career counselor in Clallam County for the state Department of Social and Health Services' Division of Vocational Rehabilitation.
Mrs. Brewer served on the Clallam County United Way board of directors and was chair of the group's Special Events Committee for three years.
She was the chair and founder of the Clallam County Literacy Council.
She designed and decorated Christmas trees for the annual Festival of Trees fund-raisers in both Port Angeles and Forks.
In 2003, she received the Port Angeles Rotary Club's Community Service Award and an award from the Clallam County Historical Society for her volunteer work with that group.
``Her travels and experiences have taught her that to truly appreciate any place and its people, it's absolutely critical to give something of yourself to that community -- she says it's a way to make the whole greater than the parts, and it's one of the reasons we're here on Earth, " said Patty Hannah, executive director of Clallam County United Way, at the Rotary award ceremonies.
In July 2000, Mrs. Brewer and another woman received a life-saving award from the Port Angeles Fire Department for performing emergency cardiopulmonary resuscitation on a woman who had collapsed after suffering cardiac arrest at the Port Angeles Senior Center.
Fire Chief Dan McKeen said the CPR saved the woman's life.
Mrs. Brewer loved roses, tea, cats, decorating, books, digital photography, anything pink, singer Barbra Streisand and Victoria, British Columbia.
She was a member of PEO.
In addition to her husband and her mother of Half Moon Bay, Calif., survivors include a brother, Dennis Kellett of Half Moon Bay; and her husband's sons, Andrew J. Brewer, M.D., of Columbus, Ohio, and Jeffrey J. Brewer of Bronx, N.Y.
Services: Her body will be cremated by Drennan-Ford Funeral Home.
A celebration of the life of Ann Brewer will be Saturday, April 30, at 2 p.m. in the Peninsula College Little Theater, Port Angeles.
