RUTH E. NEWELL

Ruth Elaine Newell, 82, of Elma died Friday, January 28, 2005, in the Providence St. Peter Hospital at Olympia.

Mrs. Newell was born Dec. 29, 1922, at Mobridge, S.D., to Wallace and Uena Lawrence.

She married Elwood ``Woody" Newell on May 6, 1945. He survives her in Elma.

Mrs. Newell enjoyed playing bingo, pinochle and cribbage with her family and friends. She was a longtime member of the Elma Senior Center.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by three sons, Roy McCluskey of Palm Springs, California, Tommy of Tacoma and Kenneth of Puyallup; five daughters, Darlyne Clements, Dru Marie Pearce and Tena Dietsche, all of Graham; Penny Stevens-Cook of Anchorage, Alaska, and Sherrie Hughes of Coulee City; two sisters, Beverly ``Dub" Lund of Port Angeles and Lorraine ``Rainie" Christianson of Bellingham; 25 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandson.

Three brothers, Edmund and Lyle Lawrence and William Ashley, a grandson and a great-grandson, all died previously.

Memorial contributions are suggested to the family in care of Woody Newell, P.O. Box 456, Elma, WA 98541.

Arrangements are by American Burial and Cremation Service of Olympia.

Florence G. Dixson

Oct. 19, 1906 -- Feb. 14, 2005

Port Angeles resident Florence G. Dixson died at age 98.

She was born in Seattle to Joseph and Jennie (Molin) Smith.

She moved to Port Angeles more than 86 years ago, and attended Roosevelt High School.

She married Floyd J. Dixson in Port Angeles in 1931.

Mrs. Dixson was a supervisor with Pacific Northwest Bell for 39 years.

She enjoyed music, especially piano, and ballroom dancing, as well as working with ceramics, traveling, playing bridge and visiting with retired coworkers.

She was a member of the Elks Lodge and First Baptist Church.

Mrs. Dixson is survived by sister Irene Gormley of Port Angeles and her family.

She was preceded in death by her husband in January 1979.

Services: Private cryptside service in Mount Angeles Memorial Park, U.S. Highway 101 and Monroe Road, Port Angeles. Entombment in Mount Angeles Memorial Park Mausoleum.

Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel, Port Angeles, is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials: Hospice of Clallam County, P.O. Box 2014, Port Angeles, WA 98362. The family requests no flowers.

Elsie May Farrington

March 6, 1926 -- Feb. 14, 2005

Port Angeles resident Elsie May Farrington died on Bainbridge Island of Alzheimer's disease. She was 78.

She was born in Lenore, Idaho, to John D. and Maud M. (Stalnaker) Goin.

She married John E. Farrington in Port Angeles on July 26, 1948.

Mrs. Farrington was a salesclerk at the Fry Drug Co. store for 25 years. She also was a foster parent to many children.

She enjoyed knitting, bowling and reading.

Mrs. Farrington was a member of the Catholic Church and also belonged to the Moose Club and the Eagles.

Survivors include her husband, son John Farrington Jr., son and daughter-in-law David and Debbie Farrington and brothers James, Joseph and Robert Goin, all of Port Angeles; and sister Olive Swearengen of Forks.

She was preceded in death by sister Freda Thayer on Jan. 5, 1999.

Services: Saturday, Feb. 26, 1:30 p.m., memorial at Drennan-Ford Funeral Home, 260 Monroe Road, Port Angeles.

Memorials: Alzheimer's Association, 12721 30th Ave. N.E., Suite 101, Seattle, WA 98125.

Linda C. Padgett

Nov. 26, 1947 -- Feb. 16, 2005

Forks resident Linda C. Padgett died at age 57.

She was born to James E. and Anna (Salarski) Lewis in Olympia, where she graduated from high school in 1966.

She married Robert Padgett on May 4, 1968.

After working in daycare and in state offices in Olympia, she was self-employed in the janitorial business in Forks for 30 years.

Mrs. Padgett enjoyed working in her flower and vegetable gardens.

Survivors include her husband of Forks; son Michael J. Padgett; stepson Robert F. Duke; daughter Jennifer J. Maxwell; stepdaughter Diane Bos; sister Marcia J. Vatnue; and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by brothers Gary J. Lewis and James Lewis.

Services: Saturday, Feb. 19, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. visitation at Mount Olympus Funeral Home, 481 Calawah Way, Forks.

LORNE HENDERSON COSTE

Lorne Henderson Coste, age 70, died in Port Angeles of cancer.

He was born in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, to Lawrence W. and Elizabeth E. (Taylor) Coste, both deceased.

After serving with the Royal Canadian Air Force as an Officer, Fighter Pilot, Instructor and Test Pilot, he joined Trans World Airlines in 1964, starting as a Flight Engineer, moving up to Co-Pilot, then Captain within four years.

In 1983, he flew with All-Cargo Airlines as a Captain, Instructor and Check Pilot on domestic and international routes.

In Desert Shield/Storm, he flew munitions and supplies to our troops in Saudi Arabia as a civilian attached to the U.S. Air Force with the field rank of Lieutenant Colonel.

He retired from aviation in 1993.

He lived many places throughout Canada, France, Belgium, New York, Kansas City and Santa Barbara, Calif., and moved to Port Angeles in 1992.

Name the country, he was there.

Lorne was a member of the Eagles, Moose, and Elk Lodges and was a lifetime member of 441 Fighter Squadron Association.

He divorced his first wife in 1991 and married Darlene A. Halbert in 2003.

Survivors include his wife, Darlene; son John Coste; daughters Gina Coste, Linda Castillo and Michelle Anderson; brother Ron Coste and four grandchildren.

Memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, February 19, 2005, at the Port Angeles Moose Lodge (Eighth and Pine Streets).

Drennan & Ford Funeral Home is entrusted with his arrangements.

RICHARD EARL `DICK' WEATHERBIE

Longtime Forks resident, Richard Earl ``Dick" Weatherbie, 62, passed away at the University of Washington Medical Center on February 3, after a short battle with leukemia. His family was by his side.

Dick was born on September 21, 1942, in Olympia to Earl and Kathleen Weatherbie.

After high school, he and a friend hopped a train and took off to the old logging camp at Lester, where he worked for Scott Paper Company. He later went to work for Simpson Timber where he worked at camps Govey and Grisdale.

He was drafted into the U.S. Army in May of 1964 and was stationed at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, and Fort Polk, Louisiana. He was in the infantry division and was a heavy supply hauler.

He married Bonnie Webster in April of 1967; they divorced in 1975. Dick then took on the responsibility of raising their only child.

He spent the rest of his working years driving various types of trucks.

Dick was a big guy with an even bigger heart who was a real ``character." He will be dearly missed by all who knew him.

He enjoyed his grandchildren, laughter, weekly bus trips and blackberry pie.

He is survived by his mother, Kathleen Kirkman; daughter Carrie Ford and son-in-law Marty; grandchildren Hailey, Robbie and Race; and sister Erleen, all of Forks.

Memorial service and potluck will be held on Saturday, February 19, 2005, at noon at the Olympia VFW Post #318 on Martin Way.

Joseph Edgar Melton

Dec. 28, 1940 -- Feb. 10, 2005

Joseph Edgar Melton died in Port Angeles Care Center at age 64.

Drennan-Ford Funeral Home, Port Angeles, is in charge of arrangements.

Leona R. Monpas

June 18, 1921 -- Feb. 10, 2005

Former Port Angeles resident Leona R. Monpas died in her Baker City, Ore., home at age 83.

She was born in Mondovi, Wis., to Alvin and Lucillia (Craker) Lunderville.

She married Leon John Monpas in Milwaukee on April 8, 1938.

The couple moved to Port Angeles in 1941 and to Oregon in 1966.

Survivors include her husband and son and daughter-in-law Charles and Lois Monpas, all of Baker City, Ore.; daughter and son-in-law Diane and Dale Wilkins of Carefree, Ariz; and seven grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.

She was preceded in death by one brother and one grandson.

Services: Today, Feb. 16, 2 p.m., graveside service in Mount Hope cemetery, Baker City, Ore., Pastor Ralph Holcomb will officiate.

Coles Funeral Home, Baker City, Ore., is in charge of arrangements.

Laura Mae Rhoades

Aug. 17, 1908 -- Feb. 14, 2005

Laura Mae Rhoades died in Olympic Care and Rehabilitation Center, Sequim, at age 96.

She was born to Orville Charles and Estella (Masyaw) Farrington in Monte Vista, Colo.

She spent her childhood in Manzanola, Colo., then graduated from Western State Teachers' College, Gunnison, with a Colorado Lifetime Teaching Credential.

She married George Arthur Rhoades on June 21, 1931.

Mrs. Rhoades taught second grade in Manzanola in 1929-33 and kindergarten in Los Altos, Calif., in 1946-53. She was also a reading specialist.

She also worked with her husband as a florist in their shops at Pittsburg, Kan., and Morro Bay., Calif., before they retired to Santa Cruz, Calif.

Mrs. Rhoades enjoyed singing and was affiliated with the United Church of Christ.

Survivors include daughter Laura Rhoades of Sequim; daughter and son-in-law Rosalie and Gerd Kanning of Los Altos, Calif.; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Her husband died in 1991.

Services: Private family services will be held in Los Altos, Calif. Olympic Cremation Association, Port Angeles, is in charge.

Memorials: Olympic Care and Rehabilitation Center Employee Fund, 1000 S. Fifth Ave., Sequim, WA 98382.

John Lobert `Lobe' Bell

May 14, 1912 -- Feb. 12, 2005

Longtime Port Angeles resident John Lobert ``Lobe" Bell died in his home at age 92.

He was born to Byron O. and Elizabeth Johanna Marie (Block) Bell in Neenah, Wis.

He played center for the Neenah High School basketball team, leading the team to its first state championship in a 1930 blizzard.

He earned a bachelor's degree from the University of Wisconsin on June 18, 1934.

Mr. Bell married June F. Seiler, in Olympia on March 15, 1935.

Mr. Bell spent his 42-year career with Rayonier Inc., where he began as a chemist in the Shelton facility. When the Shelton plant closed in 1957, he transferred to Port Angeles, where he was assistant superintendent until his retirement in 1976.

He enjoyed RV traveling with his wife and oldest daughter. During retirement, he spent six months of every year in Buena Park, Calif., to be near family members.

Mr. Bell was an avid fisherman, card player, bowler, softball player, ballroom dancer and golfer.

He and his wife were longtime members of Peninsula Golf Club. He also was a member of Elks Naval Lodge, where they often danced on Saturday nights.

Mr. Bell's survivors include daughter Barbara Bell of Port Angeles; daughter and son-in-law Elizabeth ``Betsy Bell" and Steve Stewart of Chula Vista, Calif.; brother and sister-in-law Byron and Evelyn Bell Jr. of Lake Geneva, Wis.; three grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

His wife died on March 6, 1999.

Services: At his request, none. Drennan-Ford Funeral Home, Port Angeles, is in charge of arrangements.
