Donald Jack Quick

March 27, 1928 -- Jan. 26, 2005

Donald Jack Quick died in his Sequim home at age 76.

He was born in Wilmar, Calif., to John Baker and Margaret (Mathews) Quick.

Mr. Quick served in the Navy and had an extensive background in banking prior to working with the Chicago Title Co. and the Los Angeles Dodgers for 25 years.

Following retirement, Mr. Quick spent 10 years at his ``fun job" at the Santa Anita Race Track in Arcadia, Calif.

In 1991, he moved to Sequim, where he was a member of the Church of Religious Science, American Legion, Masonic Lodge, Scottish Rite, York Rite and Elks Lodge. He was also a Kentucky Colonel and a member of Al Malaikah Shrine of Los Angeles.

In addition to his wife of 24 years, the former Helen Holtberg, Mr. Quick's survivors include sons Patrick of Elk Grove, Calif., and Michael of Oxnard, Calif.; daughters Wanda Rowe of Virginia City, Nev., and Janis Bricker of La Verne, Calif.; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services: Cremains will be distributed at sea by the Cremation Society Northwest of Seattle.

Memorial: Donations in Mr. Quick's name toward equipment or other needs of Shriners Hospital for Children, 3101 SW Sam Jackson Park Road, Portland, OR 97239-3009.

Phyllis Anne Stauffer

March 12, 1912 -- Jan. 14, 2005

Sequim resident Phyllis Anne Stauffer died in Olympic Medical Center, Port Angeles, of a cerebral hemorrhage at age 92.

She was born in Omaha, Neb., to Wilson Alfred Orm and Mary Jane Elizabeth (Roberts) Robinson.

She graduated from Cathedral High School, Lincoln, Neb., in 1930.

She studied California history and bookkeeping at Diablo Valley Junior College.

She married Paul Loren Stauffer at the Doran Ranch house on Sequim-Dungeness Way on Sept. 5, 1939,

Mrs. Stauffer first worked in Oakland, Calif., as a secretary and stenographer, typing 125 words per minute. Later, she was employed at the HC Capwell Department Store, then as bookkeeper for a road construction company.

She enjoyed ice skating -- never missing a yearly visit to the Ice Follies -- and outdoor swimming.

After retiring, she and her husband moved to Sequim.

The Stauffers shared a love of both fishing and dancing, attending the Eagles, veterans and Chicken Coop dances two to three times a week. Later, she enjoyed weekly pinochle games with friends and family.

She was a member of St. Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church in Port Townsend.

Mrs. Stauffer is survived by daughter and son-in-law Donna C. and Louis C. Pinnell of Sequim, three grandsons and two great-grandsons.

Her husband died Jan. 18, 1993.

Services: Memorial later in Oakland, Calif. Inurnment will be at Chapel of the Chimes in Oakland.

Sequim Valley Funeral Chapel, Sequim, is in charge of local arrangements.

James Edward Vogt

Nov. 28, 1916 -- Jan. 24, 2005

Sequim resident James Edward Vogt died in Port Angeles at age 88.

He was born in Elkhart, Ind., to Edward A. and Lennette (Archibald) Vogt.

He married Rilma Rita Eskine in New Orleans in 1942.

Mr. Vogt was a 30-year veteran of active duty in the Navy, from which he retired in 1963 as a chief personnelman.

He lived in Santa Ana and Santa Barbara, Calif., before moving to Sequim.

His personal interests centered on outdoor activities such as camping and fishing.

Mr. Vogt was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion.

He is survived by his son, Lynn J. Vogt Sr. of Brea, Calif.; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

His wife died in August 1991.

Services: Friday, Jan. 28, 1 p.m.: graveside inurnment with full military honors in Sequim View cemetery.

Sequim Valley Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Wesley C. Gooding

March 30, 1920 -- Jan. 15, 2005

Sequim resident Wesley C. Gooding died in Port Angeles of peripheral vascular disease. He was 84.

Born in Bellingham to Charles Wesley and Ada (Wilson) Gooding, he was the youngest of eight children.

During World War II, he served with the Army Tank Corps.

He married Meta Ann ``Mickey" Wendt in Bellingham on July 1, 1949.

He was a lifelong shingle weaver and worked for the M.R. Smith shingle mill from 1956 to 1984.

He was an active member of the International Union of Shingle Weavers and a ``die-hard" Democrat.

Mr. Gooding, who enjoyed bird and deer hunting, always had a bird dog or two.

Survivors include his wife; son and daughter-in-law James and Linda Gooding of Olympia; daughter Wendy Cameron of Seattle; daughter and son-in-law Patsy and Chris Busby of Port Angeles; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by brothers Gerald, Newton, Carl and Fred Gooding, and by sisters Eileen Fullner, Alfie Frost and Jean Baird.

Services: At his request, none. Olympic Cremation Association, Port Angeles, was in charge.

Don L. Goodpasture

July 26, 1917 -- Jan. 18, 2005

Longtime Forks resident Don L. Goodpasture, who lived in Bogachiel Adult Family Home, died of complications from a heart attack at age 87.

He and his twin sister, Doris, were born in Southern California to Thomas and Leona (Kazzier) Goodpasture.

During the Great Depression, the family moved to several areas of California, Oregon and Washington before arriving on the Peninsula, where he excelled in sports at Quinault High School, from which he graduated.

Mr. Goodpasture, who attended Bible college in Texas, was preaching when he enlisted in the Army.

He and his wife, Erline, had a daughter, Maryanne.

Mr. Goodpasture worked in all phases of cabinetry and construction. He was also a shipfitter and locksmith.

In the early 1980s, he and his second wife, Carol, moved to Forks, where he was a handyman.

Mr. Goodpasture was employed by the U.S. Forest Service's Soleduck Ranger District for 12 years.

Among his accomplishments was re-creation of Kloshe Nanitch Lookout, and a flush toilet in Klahowya Campground that won regional acclaim.

Mr. Goodpasture enjoyed golfing, gardening, spending time with his family and friends, and worshipping.

Survivors include his daughter; brother Roy Goodpasture of Roseburg, Ore.; and sisters Carol Johnson of Oroville, Calif.; Arlene Saris of Paradise, Calif.; and Lorraine Knannlein of Kennewick.

His wife, Carol, died in 1995. He was also preceded in death by sisters Madeline, Elnease, Ione and Doris.

Services: Jan. 30, 2 p.m., celebration of life in Assembly of God Church, 60 River St., LaPush. Mount Olympus Funeral Home, Forks, is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials: Assembly of God Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 98, LaPush, WA 98350; or charity of choice.

Patricia Green

May 27, 1919 -- Jan. 19, 2005

Port Angeles resident Patricia Green died in Sequim at age 85.

She was born in Chicago to Selmer and Norma (Harmon) Olsen.

She married George L. Green in February 1942. They divorced in 1965.

Mrs. Green was an accounting clerk in California, living in Los Angeles and Santa Barbara, before retiring in 1991 and moving to Port Angeles in 1997.

She was a past member of Sons of Norway.

Survivors include her former spouse, with whom she remained friends; daughter Norma of Virginia and sister Janet Bergman of Florida.

She was preceded in death by daughters Laura and Linda, and by brother Harmon.

Services: None. Drennan-Ford Funeral Home, Port Angeles, was in charge of arrangements.

Ernest Walter Griffith Sr.

July 21, 1917 -- Jan. 20, 2005

Port Angeles resident Ernest Walter Griffith Sr. died of a stroke at age 87.

He was born in Mingo, Ky., to Flem and Nannie (Hoeheimer) Griffith and spent his childhood at his parents' Old Kentucky Home tourist home in Paintsville, Ky.

He attended Mayo State Vocational School in Paintsville in 1940.

In 1942-45, Mr. Griffith served as an airplane and engine mechanic in the Army Air Corps at Big Spring, Texas. He advanced to sergeant and was awarded the American Theater ribbon and World War II Victory, Good Conduct and Sharpshooter medals.

He married Jacqueline Daniels in Big Spring, Texas, on Aug. 9, 1944.

In 1947, the Griffiths moved to Port Angeles, where he began work at Crown Zellerbach paper mill as a grinderman.

In December 2002, after 55½ accident-free years, he retired at age 85 from the mill, then owned by Daishowa America, as an A-operator.

Mr. Griffith toured all 50 states and all but two Canadian provinces, mostly by car or motor home.

He also traveled to Australia, New Zealand, India, China, Thailand, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Spain, Portugal, France, Peru, Bolivia and Mexico.

Mr. Griffith was a member of the Association of Western Pulp and Paper Workers, Independent Order of Foresters, Good Sam's Club and First Baptist Church.

In addition to his wife, survivors include son Ernest Walter Griffith Jr., daughters Jacqueline Koon and Lyndell Hanson, and five grandchildren, all of Port Angeles.

Brother Jesse Ray ``Tuffy" Griffith and sister Guthrie Matlack preceded him in death.

Services: Saturday, Jan. 29, 2 p.m., memorial in First Baptist Church, Sixth and Laurel streets, Port Angeles. The Rev. George Boudet will officiate. A reception will follow in the fellowship hall.

Winfield `Sandy' Miller

Jan. 29, 1927 -- Jan. 23, 2005

Winfield ``Sandy" Miller died of a stroke in his Sequim home.

He was born in Port Angeles to Winfield Scott and Mable (Higinbotham) Miller Sr.

He was stationed in Aleutian Islands with the Air Force from 1944 to 1947.

He married Joan D. Meadors in Port Orchard on Nov. 7, 1949.

Mr. Miller attended Olympic College in Bremerton for two years.

He was with the Washington State Fisheries Patrol for 30 years, attaining chief of patrol in Olympia.

After retirement, he was a customs officer in Port Angeles for four years.

Mr. Miller, who was a daily jogger for 30 years, built three homes of his own.

He enjoyed fishing, hunting, farming and gardening, and was a member of the Grange and the Masonic Lodge.

Mr. Miller's survivors include his wife of Sequim; sons and daughters-in-law Winfield S. and Sheila Miller Jr. of Sequim, and David B. and Kelly Miller of Bremerton; son Steven E. Miller of Bremerton; daughter and son-in-law Sandy-Jo and Carl Keil of Bremerton; daughter Lynn S. Fowler of Bremerton; half-sister Arlayne Cogburn of Port Angeles; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services: Saturday, Jan. 29, 1 p.m., graveside service in Ocean View cemetery, 3127 W. 18th St., Port Angeles. The Rev. Mel Wilson will officiate.
