SHIRLEY GRIFFITHS RAAUM

Mom was born in Seattle, Washington, on September 24, 1924, to Clarence W. and Nell (Allsop) Taylor.

Shirley died on December 3, 2004, at the age of 80, due to heart failure.

Her childhood years were spent in West Seattle with her parents and older brother, Robert.

She was a graduate of West Seattle High School (1942) and continued her education at the University of Washington.

From an early age, Shirley had a strong interest and good talent for the piano, which she enjoyed throughout her life. She passed on this love and performing skill for music to her sons and grandchildren, but especially to her oldest son, Brandel, and granddaughter, Katie.

Shirley was the granddaughter of A.N. Taylor, who taught at the Dungeness Schoolhouse and was the superintendent in the early years of the 20th century.

She and her brother, Robert, also spent time in Sequim at the family farm on what was then named Taylor Road. Over the course of her lifetime, the farm in Sequim would remain a focal point. Mom fondly recalled exploring in the woods of the farm (where SunLand is) with her grandfather, A.N. Taylor.

She especially enjoyed spending time with her Uncle Stan Taylor and Uncle Jess Taylor, not anticipating that some 56 years later her son and his family would be living in the same farmhouse.

Mom was at the University of Washington during the early war years, and began training as a transport pilot to ferry Army Air Corps planes overseas. She completed her single-engine aircraft instruction and soloed, but the program was cut back before she went on to advanced multi-engine instruction.

Mom had a special friend in school named Audry Jensen, who belonged with Mom to the famous Girl Scout Troop 65 of West Seattle. The friendships formed there last to this day, and one resulted in Audry Jensen meeting Shirley's brother, Robert, and becoming Shirley's sister-in-law and our Aunt Audry.

Mom then met our Dad, Alfred M. Sundt, through her brother.

Both were working for Alaska Steamship Lines in the 1940s, and Mom rode up to Bellingham to meet her brother's ship. They gave this young, good-looking Deck Officer a ride to Ballard, and the courtship soon followed.

Shirley and Al were married on January 24, 1945, at the University Lutheran Church in Seattle.

During the 1950s and early 1960s, our family lived in Port Angeles, where Shirley worked as a secretary at the high school (1956-57) and later as a secretary and administrative assistant for the Clallam County Superintendent of Schools, Mr. Harold Ruthruff, from 1957 to 1964.

She enjoyed her work with the schools, and found time to volunteer in assisting with the groundwork for what would become known as the Diversified Industries Program, which provided employment for special-needs adults.

In 1963, Mom served as secretary for the United Cerebral Palsy Association for the state of Washington. Shirley also continued to volunteer for special needs youth and adults when she lived in Aberdeen from 1964 to 1970, assisting with Special Olympics programs.

During those years, Mom worked as the secretary to the manager of engineering at Lamb Grays Harbor, and later as an executive secretary for Aiken and Sanders, CPAs.

Shirley was active in several professional businesswomen's organizations, including Zonta, and maintained her support of musical arts in the local Pro Musica club.

Throughout her life, Shirley remained an active supporter of scholastic assistance for her University sorority, Alpha Chi Omega.

Her husband, Capt. Alfred Sundt, died on Feb. 2, 1967, while piloting a Japanese freighter inbound from the ocean to the port of Grays Harbor.

From 1970 to 1989, Shirley lived in Seattle and worked for Moss Adams Accountants and the law firm of Ryan Swanson and Cleveland. She was Mr. Cleveland's executive secretary and throughout her retirement remained good friends with Mr. Cleveland and his wife, Nancy.

On April 13, 1979, Shirley married Capt. Graham Griffiths. They enjoyed traveling and hosting visits from Gray's Welsh family. Gray died in May of 1995.

Mom began living in SunLand on Hilltop Drive in 1989, and formed many friendships with immediate neighbors and others in the community. She especially enjoyed looking out her window and viewing the Taylor farmhouse where her son, Mark, daughter-in-law, Leilani, and grandson, Kiehl, live.

Shirley had the good fortune to meet Dick Raaum in the late 1990s, and a romance quickly blossomed. Both had lost their spouses, and a SunLand wedding soon followed.

Their marriage on December 16, 1999, was a very happy occasion for both of the blended families.

Shirley and Dick were both realistic and knew their time together could never be as long as they would want. So Dick and Mom had a unique way of celebrating their wedding anniversary.

They considered each month to be a year. Therefore, they would have been married ``60" years on Dec. 16.

Mom and Dick were an excellent match and complemented each other. Mom said she had never been happier, and it was quite apparent that was the case.

Shirley and her ``Viking" were quite the team. The first few years of their marriage, they were able to be quite active, traveling around the western U.S. and to the Scandinavian countries to visit Dick's family (especially daughter, Mette, her husband, Tomas, and granddaughter, Jenny) and friends.

We will miss her sharp intellect, keen sense of humor, compassion for others and, most all, her endless love and support for those of us in her family, extended family and her community.

Shirley is survived by her husband, Dick Raaum of Sequim, son Brandel and daughter-in-law Elaine of Port Angeles; granddaughter Kristine (husband Bill) Wardlow and Shirley's great-grandson Django, in San Diego, California; granddaughter Katie of Seattle; son Mark and daughter-in-law Leilani, grandson Alfred Graham ``Kiehl" Sundt of the family farm in Sequim; brother Robert A. Taylor and wife Audry of Seattle, their daughter (niece) Kaye and husband Andy Hall of Everett; and their daughters (great-nieces) Kerstin, Elise, and twins Kari and Anna.

She was preceded in death by her nephew, Tom Taylor (son of Robert and Audry Taylor), in 1998.

Aunt Elsie McFarland of Port Angeles survives; also, cousins Anne (husband Lynn) Petersen and family of Springfield, Oregon; Brooke (wife Diane) and family from Port Angeles; cousin Dr. Peter L. Taylor and family, from Sun Valley, Idaho.

Husband Dick Raaum's family also survives, and especially close to Shirley were son Scott and daughter-in-law Nancy and their children, Jessica, Allison, and Spencer of California.

In Sweden, daughter Mette Raaum, her husband, Tomas Lind, and granddaughter Jenny Lind survive.
