GERALDINE KUTTING BEELER

The summer of 1913 brought the arrival of Geraldine Irna Helen Kutting, to begin life and reach goals.

Her first was to become a wonderful, nurturing elementary school teacher. Her pathway as a student led to graduating in 1929 from Stadium High School in Tacoma and receiving her Teacher's Life Diploma in 1933 from Washington Normal School in Ellensburg.

Miss Kutting's first teaching assignment in Toppenish, Washington, required her at that time to remain unmarried and not only "light the fire" in students daily, but also in the schoolhouse!

In Ventura, Calif., (during WWII) and Port Angeles, Washington, (post-war) hundreds of students enjoyed the teaching, love and art projects shared with energetic Mrs. Beeler.

Geraldine continually collected files and resources not only for her own use, but to share as she mentored new teachers until her retirement in 1975.

"Mrs. Beeler" met her future husband Harold on a train which stalled on their way back to Washington Normal School. She offered him chocolate cake and he later offered her a wedding ring in 1937.

When Harold was recruited to Guadalcanal with the Navy's SeaBees, Geraldine was allowed to teach as Mrs. Beeler.

During their 65 years of marriage, music was an integral part of the household. A frequent sound was duets being played, Geraldine on the piano and Harold on the guitar. A talented pianist, Geraldine played for recreation as well as accompanying church and school interests.

In the 1960's, the Beelers began enjoying annual summer trips to historic areas around the U.S., Canada and Mexico in their Airstream; Geraldine would transform highlights of the trips into classroom learning experiences.

Europe, and relatives, welcomed them in 1987 as they visited Germany, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium and the Netherlands.

Geraldine put family and friends first and endlessly provided love, encouragement and generosity. Her loyalty and readiness to listen and give support in times of need could be well documented by everyone blessed to know her. Each one of her grandchildren was adored and she showered with individual attention from "Mudder" or "Grammie" who actively loved them and taught them of the love of the Lord.

In 1996, Geraldine and Harold moved from their home of 50 years in Port Angeles to Mount Vernon to be closer to family and make more friends.

On September 6, 2004, her life's journey ended as she was freed from a long-standing illness. Geraldine is now reunited with her granddaughter Lindsey Odell (1984) and husband Harold (2002).

Those family members remaining, who will celebrate Geraldine's life at a future memorial service, are her daughters Judy Odell, Carole Myers and husband Bruce; beloved grandchildren Cary and Rachel Buller, Nancy and Craig Hawley, Brandon Odell and Jeff Odell.

Memorial donations may be made to a local hospice organization.

Arrangements are under the care of Hawthorne Funeral Home, 1825 E College Way, Mount Vernon, WA 98273.
