Dorothy Kenney

May 24, 1923 -- July 27, 2004

Dorothy Kenney of Bear Creek died in Olympic Memorial Hospital, Port Angeles, at age 81.

She was born in Hoquiam to Oliver Manford and Etta (Jacobsen) Tomlin.

She married Robert Auldy Kenney in the Assembly of God Church in Forks on Sept. 29, 1945.

Mrs. Kenney, who attended Northwest Bible Institute, and her husband pastored at Native American churches in Wellpinit and LaPush. They also worked at American Indian Bible School on the Lower Elwha Klallam Reservation in Port Angeles.

She was a member of Forks Assembly of God Church. The Bible was her favorite book.

Mrs. Kenney is survived by son Philip Kenney of Newport, Ore.; daughters Ellen Bowers of Forks and Rebecca Balch of Port Angeles; brother Ralph Tomlin of Montesano; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Her husband died on Aug. 2, 1992. Also preceding Mrs. Kenney in death were brother Carl Tomlin, sisters Myrtle Hall and Martha Sorg, and grandson Stephen Robert Kenney.

Services: Friday, July 30, 6-8 p.m., visitation in Mount Olympus Funeral Home, 481 Calawah Way, Forks.

Funeral service Saturday, July 31, 11 a.m., Forks Assembly of God Church, 81 Huckleberry Lane. The Rev. Bill Hassler will officiate.

Burial in Forks cemetery will be followed by dinner at the church.

James George Spirup

July 9, 1922 -- July 24, 2004

James George Spirup died of injuries received from a fall in his Sequim home. He was 82.

He was born in St. Paul, Ore., to Peter M. and Lona M. (Rasmussen) Spirup

Mr. Spirup earned a bachelor's degree in history in 1942 from Pacific College, and did graduate study at University of California, Berkeley.

During World War II, he was commissioned as an ensign in the Navy and served with the aviation branch in 1943-46.

He married Betty A. Craven in Indianola, Iowa, on June 22, 1945.

Mr. Spirup was employed for 35 years as a security staff officer at Sandia National Laboratories, a government-owned and contractor-operated research and development agency of the Department of Energy and managed by Lockheed Martin.

He lived in Danville, Calif., for 28 years and in Albuquerque, N.M., for 12 years before moving to Sequim in 1992.

He was a member of veteran associations, Sequim Presbyterian Church and Bible Study Fellowship as well as a discussion leader for Gideons International.

He also enjoyed gardening.

Mr. Spirup's survivors include his wife; son James M. Spirup of Abingdon, Va.; daughters Patricia C. Terry of Richland, JoAnn Luckemeyer of Reno, Nev., and Virginia C. Leoppard of Truckee, Calif.; brother Richard A. Spirup of Salem, Ore.; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

Services: Today, July 29, 3-5 p.m., visitation in Drennan-Ford Funeral Home, 260 Monroe Road, Port Angeles.

Memorial on Friday, July 30 11 a.m., Sequim Presbyterian Church, 950 N. Fifth Ave., Sequim. A reception will follow. The Rev. Ralph Kieneker will officiate.

Burial will be in Newberg, Ore.

Memorials: The Gideons International, P.O. Box 1695, Sequim, WA 98382.

Freida Wilhelmine Turner

Aug. 1, 1923 -- July 24, 2004

Sequim resident Freida Wilhelmine Turner died at age 80.

She was born to John William and Astrid Frieda (Halvorsen) Collins in Windsor, Ontario, where she graduated from Grace Hospital School of Nursing.

She married Winston Taylor Turner in Brighton, Mich., on Feb. 23, 1951.

Mrs. Turner worked as a registered nurse in Michigan, California and Washington.

Her personal interests included playing the piano, needlecrafts such as knitting and crocheting, and cooking/baking.

Mrs. Turner was a member of First Baptist Church and Eastern Star.

Survivors include son John Turner of Sequim; son and daughter-in-law Jim and Linda Turner of Vancouver, Wash.; daughter and son-in-law Jan and ``Cub" Wolf of Port Orchard; brothers Norman Collins of Warner Robins, Ga., Gordon Collins of California and William Collins of Widington, Mich.; and three grandchildren.

Her husband preceded her in death.

Services: Saturday, July 31, 2 p.m., memorial in First Baptist Church, 1323 Sequim-Dungeness Way, Sequim. The Rev. Butch Adcock and William Collins will officiate. Potluck will follow.

Sequim Valley Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

John Lee Burleson

July 27, 1928 -- July 24, 2004

John Lee Burleson died in his Port Angeles home at age 75.

He was born in McPhee, Colo., to James Lee and Jennie Lynn (Grabeel) Burleson.

He married Genevee Norma Robison in Elko, Nev., on June 21, 1958.

Mr. Burleson served in the Navy, and was an underground miner, train foreman, an interstate truck driver, logger and an expediter for Boeing Co.

He attended Unity Church.

Mr. Burleson is survived by his wife and stepsons Philip, Joseph and Albert Davis.

Services: None. Drennan-Ford Funeral Home, Port Angeles, is in charge.

James B. Halvorson

Jan. 7, 1941 -- July 23, 2004

Lifelong Jefferson County resident James B. Halvorson of Chimacum died in Seattle from injuries sustained in a July 15 vehicle crash. He was 63.

He was born to Bennie and Wilda (Hudson) Halvorson in Port Townsend. He graduated from Quilcene High School in 1959.

He married Cheryl Maxine Kuehn in Port Townsend on July 21, 1973, then moved to the family farm at Chimacum.

For eight years after high school, Mr. Halvorson was a logger. Then for 27 years, he was a forestry technician in timber management and recreation for the U.S. Forest Service. He retired in 1994, and in 1995 became a flagger for Jefferson County Public Works.

In addition to being a member of Teamsters, he was a deacon at Quilcene Bible Church and helped establish Quilcene Bible Church Christian School.

He enjoyed woodcarving, recreational-vehicle traveling, hunting, fishing and college football.

Mr. Halvorson's survivors include his wife of 31 years; daughter Katharine Webb of Poulsbo; sister Mary Orwick of Sumner; sister and brother-in-law Bonnie and Glen Whitney of Longview; mother-in-law Edna A. Kuehn of Port Townsend; brother-in-law and sister-in-law Karl ``Ted" and Verla Kuehn of Anchorage, Alaska; sisters-in-law Linda Weynand and Deana Kuehn of Anchorage; and one grandson.

He was preceded in death by his parents and father-in-law, Karl Kuehn.

Services: Saturday, July 31, 11 a.m., celebration of life in Quilcene cemetery. Les Drake will preside. Casual dress is requested.

A potluck reception will follow at Quilcene Bible Church, 295643 Highway 101, Quilcene, where dishes may be dropped off before the service.

Kosec Funeral Home, Port Townsend, is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials: Jefferson County First District No. 1, P.O. Box 537, Chimacum, WA 98339; or Quilcene Bible Church Christian School, P.O. Box 118, Quilcene, WA 98376. The family requests no flowers.

Terry Lee Maybury

March 23, 1955 -- July 23, 2004

Port Angeles resident Terry Lee Maybury died in Clallam Bay of a heart attack at age 49.

He was born in Rangely, Colo., to Roy Keith and Barbara Jane (Kayton) Maybury.

He graduated from Port Angeles High School and earned an associate degree in electronics from Peninsula College.

Mr. Maybury was a certified auto mechanic, and was employed for three years at Clallam Bay Correctional Facility.

He enjoy fishing and was helpful to anyone in need.

Mr. Maybury was a member of the Teamsters union and the Moose Lodge.

He married Pamela Monro in Kent on May 1, 1993.

Mr. Maybury is survived by his wife, son Alex, daughter Chelsea and brother Kenneth Maybury, all of Port Angeles; son Adam Maybury of Gold Bar; daughter Vanessa Maybury of Olympia; brother Michael Maybury of Oregon; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Services: Friday, July 30, 3-7 p.m., visitation in Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel, 105 W. Fourth St., Port Angeles.

Memorial service Saturday, July 31, 1 p.m., in First Baptist Church, Sixth and Laurel streets, Port Angeles. The Rev. George Boudet will officiate.

Herbert Walters O'Quin

July 4, 1918 -- July 25, 2004

Former Peninsula resident Herbert Walters O'Quin died in Lacey of severe anemia. He was 86.

Born in Bunkie, La., to Frank and Helen Maude (Tower) O'Quin, he spent most of his boyhood years in New Orleans.

He joined the Navy at age 17, for which he was on active duty in 1935-55. Mr. O'Quin participated in World War II (Pacific Theater) and Korean War, and was awarded several service medals as well as the Purple Heart.

He married Bette Lorraine Pritchard in Lewiston, Idaho, on Dec. 18, 1948.

After retiring from the Navy, Mr. O'Quin settled in Long Beach, Calif., where he worked for the Port of Long Beach. In 1976, he retired to Port Townsend, which remained the couple's home until 1989.

He is survived by son and daughter-in-law Christopher Thomas and Marie Rebecca O'Quin of Tacoma; daughter and son-in-law Mary Alice and Richard Legier of Lacey; and nine grandchildren.

His wife died May 3, 2002. His son, Daniel James O'Quin, died in 1978.

Services: Thursday, July 29, 10 a.m. to noon, visitation in Kosec Funeral Home, 1615 Parkside Drive, Port Townsend.

Graveside service on Thursday, July 29, at 1 p.m., in Laurel Grove cemetery. Kosec Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

James George Spirup

July 9, 1922 -- July 24, 2004

James George Spirup died in his Sequim home at age 82.

Services: Friday, July 30, 11 a.m., memorial in Sequim Presbyterian Church, 950 N. Fifth Ave. Drennan-Ford Funeral Home, Port Angeles, is in charge of arrangements.

Andrew Jacob Wilson

Dec. 2, 1928 -- July 25, 2004

Port Angeles resident Andrew Jacob Wilson died at age 75.

He was born in Sanders County, Montana, to James D. and Mary (Bocook) Wilson.

In addition to serving in the Army, Mr. Wilson studied American government at Brigham Young University and completed an ornamental horticulture program at Renton Vocational Technical Institute.

He worked as a landscaper.

He belonged to Toastmasters, and was also a minister and member of General Assembly and Church of the First Born.

Mr. Wilson enjoyed writing letters and poetry, gardening, cooking and camping.

His survivors include sister Martha Adams of Port Angeles, brother William Wilson and brother-in-law David Allen Bocook.

He was preceded in death by sisters Clara Mae, Effie Wiegent, Norma Burr and Margie Bocook.

Services: Saturday, July 31, 1 p.m., memorial at Mount Pleasant Grange, Mount Pleasant and Draper roads, with cousin Les B. Lauderback officiating. Open house after the service will be followed by a church meeting. There was cremation. Drennan-Ford Funeral Home, Port Angeles, is in charge.
