George O. Young

Sept. 6, 1929 -- July 22, 2004

Sequim resident George O. Young died of Parkinson's disease at age 74.

He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y., to Carl Henry and Helen Clara (Miller) Young and graduated from high school in Queens, N.Y.

Mr. Young, who was a member of Insurance Adjusters Society, was employed by State Farm Insurance Co., and United States Automobile Association Co. before he retired in 1995.

In addition to New York, he lived in Florida and California before moving to Sequim nine years ago.

Mr. Young was an accomplished artist and played both classical and modern piano.

His marriage to Irmgard Edelbutel in New York City in February 1955 ended in divorce in 1968.

He married Shirley (Stokes) Lyon in November 1969. They divorced in 1992.

Mr. Young's survivors include son Wesley Young of Roseville, Calif.; daughters Jeanette Rice of Sacramento, Calif., and Susan Roggenbuck of Granite Bay, Calif.; brother William J. ``Bill" Young of Sequim; sisters Frieda Lemmon of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Mary White of Sebastian, Fla.; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by brothers Carl, Frederick and Edward Young.

Services: None. Sequim Valley Funeral Chapel is in charge.

ARLYS JOSEPHINE GILLESPIE KIRK

Arlys Josephine Gillespie Kirk, 92, died July 25, 2004, in Woodland, Washington.

She was born December 18, 1911, in Wenatchee to John and Delia Collins Gillespie and lived most of her life in Sequim and most recently in Kalama, Longview and Woodland.

She was a homemaker and worked out of the home at various odd jobs. She enjoyed spectator sports, camping, traveling, ceramics, crafts, bowling and being with her family.

She was a member of the Homemakers Club (later known as Stitch and Bitch Club) and Democrats Club.

She and Frank J. Kirk were married September 20, 1933, in Port Angeles. He preceded her in death in January 1997.

Survivors include a son, Mike Kirk of Bellingham, a daughter, Patricia Hickman of Kalama, 6 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. today, July 28, 2004, at Drennan-Ford Funeral Home, Port Angeles, Washington. Burial will be at Mount Angeles Memorial Park in Port Angeles. Her grandsons will be the casketbearers.

A reception for family and friends will follow at 4 p.m. at The Ramada Inn Conference Room in Sequim.

Memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Association, 12721 30th Ave. N.E., Suite 101, Seattle, WA 98125.

Arrangements by Jerns Funeral Chapel and On-Site Crematorium, Bellingham, Washington.

Ashton Jayydon Ronald Johnson

July 21, 2004 -- July 21, 2004

Ashton Jayydon Ronald Johnson died in Olympic Medical Center, Port Angeles, shortly after birth.

The son of Bruce David Johnson Jr. and Darcy Lynn Hylton is survived by brothers Isaiah Alize Hylton and Bruce David Johnson III both of Port Angeles; grandparents Bruce Johnson, Pam Johnson and Melody Chandler, all of Port Angeles; and grandfather Ronald Hylton of Montesano.

Services: Thursday, July 29, 11 a.m., graveside service in Ocean View cemetery, 3127 W. 18th St., Port Angeles. A reception will follow at the Lower Elwha Tribal Center.

Drennan-Ford Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Arlys Josephine Kirk

Dec. 18, 1911 -- July 25, 2004

Arlys Josephine Kirk died in Woodland at age 92.

She was born in Wenatchee to John and Delia (Collins) Gillespie and lived most of her life in Sequim.

She married Frank J. Kirk in Port Angeles on Sept. 20, 1933.

Mrs. Kirk was primarily a homemaker but also worked out of her home in a variety of jobs. In recent years, she lived in Kalama, Longview and Woodland.

Mrs. Kirk's survivors include son Mike of Bellingham; daughter Patricia Hickman of Kalama; six grandchildren, 12 great-grandchilden and two great-great-grandchildren.

Her husband died in January 1997.

Services: Wednesday, July 28, funeral at Drennan-Ford Funeral Home, 260 Monroe Road, Port Angeles. A reception will follow the service at the Ramada Limited conference room, 1095 E. Washington St., Sequim.

Burial, with her grandsons as casketbearers, will be in Mount Angeles Memorial Park, U.S. Highway 101 and Monroe Road, Port Angeles.

Robert Baker Nelson

Aug. 6, 1922 -- July 25, 2004

Robert Baker Nelson died of cancer in his Sequim home at age 81.

He was born in Saginaw, Mich., to Ivan J. and Martha (Baker) Nelson.

During World War II, from 1943-45, Mr. Nelson was a pilot with the U.S. Army Air Forces.

He married Rosemary Kistner in Cincinnati on Dec. 31, 1945.

Survivors include his wife and son, Steven Nelson, both of Sequim; sons Michael Nelson of Gig Harbor and David Nelson of Port Angeles; daughter Karen Nelson of Phoenix; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services: None. Neptune Society of Seattle is in charge of cremation.

Memorials: Hospice of Clallam County, P.O. Box 2014, Port Angeles, WA 98362.

Herbert Walters O'Quin

July 4, 1918 -- July 25, 2004

Former Port Townsend resident Herbert Walters O'Quin died in Lacey at age 86.

Services: Thursday, July 29, 10 a.m. to noon, visitation in Kosec Funeral Home, 1615 Parkside Drive, Port Townsend; Thursday, July 29, at 1 p.m., graveside service in Laurel Grove cemetery.

Memorials: Flowers may be sent to Kosec Funeral Home, 1615 Parkside Drive, Port Townsend, WA 98368.

Molly Irene Ritter

Nov. 3, 1957 -- July 20, 2004

Former Peninsula resident Molly Irene Ritter died in Ephrata at age 46.

She was born to John and Edith (Olin) Logg Ritter in Everett, where she attended school before moving to Jefferson County.

She attended Chimacum Elementary and was a 1976 graduate of Port Townsend High School. After graduation, she earned her associate degree in business from Peninsula College, Port Angeles.

When Ms. Ritter moved to southern California to be near her brother, she was office manager for a company that makes lenses for cataract patients.

Returning to Port Townsend, she worked as a carrier for both The Daily News, later Peninsula Daily News, and Seattle Post-Intelligencer.

During that time, Ms. Ritter became an established photographer, with one of her favorite subjects being the Sequim elk herd.

The onset of a malignant brain tumor forced her into retirement, although she remained active until a few months ago.

Ms. Ritter's survivors include her mother in Ephrata; siblings and their spouses John A. and Connie Ritter of Mora, Minn.; Betty (Ritter) and Larry Miller of Bremerton, and George and Harriet Logg, Susan (Logg) and Michael Glaefke, Grant Logg and Barbara (Logg) Pleas, all of Port Townsend; Richard and Renee Logg of Arlington and Linda (Logg) and Stan Smith of Port Angeles.

She was preceded in death by her father in 1968, brother Gary Logg in 1998, and brother-in-law Charles Ritter.

Services: Memorial July 24 at Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses in Ephrata. Nichols Funeral Home, Ephrata, was in charge of arrangements.

Isabelle Singhose

Oct. 25, 1914 -- July 21, 2004

Former Peninsula resident Isabelle Singhose died in Alfalfa, Ore., at age 89.

She was born in Seattle to John and Patranella (Kutchins) Daugert and graduated from Clallam Bay High School.

On June 2, 1934, she married William C. Singhose in Seattle. The couple left the Peninsula area in 1955.

Services: Friday, July 30, graveside in Redmond Memorial cemetery, Redmond, Ore. Niswonger, Reynolds Funeral Home, Bend, Ore., is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials: Hospice of Bend/La Pine, 2075 NE Wyatt Court, Bend, OR 97701.

EMILY ELIZABETH ALLEN RINGIUS

Emily Elizabeth Allen Ringius passed away July 21, 2004, after a short but hard-fought battle with cancer.

The daughter of Mark and Blanch (Rutter) Allen, Emily was born in Oxford, Kansas, on October 12, 1919.

She graduated from Udall (Kansas) High School in 1937 as Valedictorian, Wichita Business College in 1939, and attended numerous college courses in San Diego for enhancing her job skills as well as for the pure enjoyment of learning.

Emily worked for Coleman Co. in Wichita, Kansas, Ames Aeronautical Lab in Mountain View, Calif., and the Boeing Co. in Wichita, Denver and Seattle. Emily was a Personnel Specialist at Naval Air Station North Island, Coronado, Calif., for 18 years.

Emily married Wesley R. Ringius on August 14, 1948, at Naval Air Station Moffett Field, Mountain View, Calif. During their 55 years of marriage they lived in numerous cities, including Annapolis, Maryland, and Quonset Point, Rhode Island. Emily especially enjoyed living in Fairfax, Virginia.

Wes finished his military career in San Diego. Upon Wes' retirement from the San Diego school system in 1980, they moved to Port Angeles and built their dream home, which they had planned for many years.

Emily grew up in a musical family. She was an accomplished violinist and won many awards for her performances. She also played the piano and loved to sing.

Emily was always very active in sports, including basketball and softball. She won many bowling trophies over the years, including the 1959 Class A Women's Singles Championship in San Diego.

She loved to play as much golf as possible, and was a member of the Peninsula Golf Club for many years.

She enjoyed birding, and played bridge regularly.

Everyone who knew Emily recognized her quick wit, sharp mind and her competitive nature. She was a strong believer in women's abilities and rights.

Emily was a most positive person. She had strong feelings and concerns about the welfare of others, the environment and future of our country. Her family and friends will miss her dearly.

She is survived by her husband Wesley Ringius (Port Angeles); sons Stephen Ringius (El Cajon, Calif.) and Mark Ringius (Port Angeles); daughter-in-law Carlene Ringius (Port Angeles); grandson Mark Ringius (San Diego, Calif.); step-grandson Brian Hougard (La Mesa, Calif.); brothers Frazier Allen (Kansas City, Kansas) and Roland Allen (Bellevue, Washington) as well as many nieces and nephews.

Per Emily's wishes, there will be no services.

Contributions may be made to American Heart Association, Hospice of Clallam County or charity of your choice.

Richard G. Cole

April 3, 1931 -- July 10, 2004

Richard G. Cole died in Port Angeles at age 73.

He was born in Shelton to Alva Edison and Dewey Mae (Carpenter) Cole.

He was on active duty in the Navy, in which he was a personnelman, in 1951-55.

Mr. Cole attended Pacific Lutheran University in Tacoma and worked for the Boeing Co. as a draftsman.

He lived in Port Orchard and Federal Way before moving to Port Angeles.

Mr. Cole enjoyed spending time with family and friends, fishing, sharing jokes and winning at cribbage.

He married Lillian Ann Honeyball in Burbank, Calif.

In addition to his wife, daughter Caryl A. Cole and sons Bryan D. Cole and Timothy C. Cole, all of Port Angeles, Mr. Cole's survivors include son Richard K. Cole of Lakewood; brother Gerald Cole of Tacoma; sister Marjorie Cole of Everett; five grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by brother Robert Cole.

Services: Private service later. Drennan-Ford Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Dalmain Jacobs

July 14, 1915 -- June 8, 2004

Services: Saturday, July 31, 1 p.m., memorial at Fairview Grange, 2123 Lake Farm Road, Port Angeles. Family and Grange members will officiate.

Harvey Marion LaFollette Knettle

July 13, 1927 -- July 20, 2004

Port Angeles resident Harvey Marion LaFollette Knettle died of cancer at age 77.

He was born in Seattle to Lemyart D. and Melcina (LaFollette) Knettle.

He served in the Navy, and was a baseball player in his youth.

Mr. Knettle was a member of the International Longshore Workers Union local and Supercargo and Supervisors and Checkers Union of Seattle, where he worked as a checker before moving to Port Ludlow.

Later, he found what he called his ``heaven on Earth" in Port Angeles, where he was a member of Peninsula Golf Club after taking up residency.

Mr. Knettle often donated anonymously to individuals and organizations in need.

He is survived by nephew Christian LaFollette Holtz of Seattle.

Services: Tuesday, July 27, 11 a.m., graveside service in Ocean View cemetery, 3127 W. 18th St., Port Angeles. Drennan-Ford Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials: Charity of choice.
