Clarence Ellis Byrd

Sept. 28, 1911 -- July 10, 2004

Port Angeles resident Clarence Ellis Byrd died at age 92.

He was born in Darrington to William Lester and Jane Elizabeth (Dean) Byrd.

He married Mabel Reid in Port Angeles on Jan. 7, 1934.

As a young man, Mr. Byrd worked in the logging industry, including 20 years at Rayonier mill.

He joined an auxiliary unit of the Coast Guard Temporary Reserve in 1943-45.

In 1955, Mr. Byrd bought into the Med-Ply mill in Medford, Ore. In 1968, returned to Washington where he worked for the Space Center Division of Boeing Co.

After the Byrds returned to Port Angeles in 1980, they managed Lari-at Hall, where many weddings, class reunions and other special events were held, for 20 years.

In addition to playing pinochle and bridge, he enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing.

Mr. Byrd was a life member of Elks Naval Lodge and was a member of the Senior Bowling League and First United Methodist Church.

Survivors include his wife of 70 years; sons Robert Byrd of Austin, Texas, and Richard Byrd of Boise, Idaho; daughter Shirley LaFollette Cozadd of Mercer Island; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Services: Today, July 14, 2 p.m., memorial in First United Methodist Church, 110 E. Seventh St., Port Angeles. The Rev. John Maxwell will officiate. There was cremation.

Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials: First United Methodist Church, 110 E. Seventh St., Port Angeles, WA 98362.

Wendy K. McBride

April 10, 1939 -- July 10, 2004

Services for Wendy K. McBride are Thursday, July 15, 2 p.m., graveside at Ocean View cemetery, 3127 W. 18th St. Port Angeles.

A memorial will be held Wednesday, July 21, at 3 p.m. at Lincoln Park, 1900 W. Lauridsen Blvd., Port Angeles. The Rev. Mark Weatherford will officiate.

Following the graveside service, there will be a reception at the home of Shelley Evenstad, 2121 E. Fifth Ave., Port Angeles. Drennan-Ford Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Willie G. Meeker

Sept. 5, 1915 -- July 11, 2004

Sequim resident Willie G. Meeker died at age 88.

She was born in Marshall, Mo., to Don G. and Anna Belle (Durrett) Young

She married Robert J. Meeker in Bertrand, Neb., on June 19, 1943.

As the wife of an Army officer, she lived throughout the world while raising their two children.

Mrs. Meeker's interests included dancing, gardening, bridge and golf with her husband.

Her survivors include son Don Edward Meeker of Richmond, Va.; daughter Lois Lee Albers of Edmonds; sisters Nancy Ann Schultz of Sedalia, Mo., and Mary Margaret Hoffman of Kansas City, Mo; five grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Her husband died March 13, 2001.

Services: Today, Wednesday, July 14, noon to 5 p.m., visitation in Sequim Valley Funeral Chapel, 108 W. Alder St., Sequim.

Graveside service Thursday, July 15, 1 p.m., in Sequim View cemetery with Chaplain Dennis Niva officiating.

ED CREASEY

September 13, 1920 - June 28, 2004

Ed Creasey, 83, of Sequim died in a Lakewood hospital June 28, 2004, following an extended illness.

He was born in McMinnville, Oregon, on Sept. 13, 1920. He moved with his parents to Filer, Idaho.

He is the oldest of seven brothers, all born-again Christians, according to John 3:3-7. Ed attended Sequim Bible Church for 32 years.

He served in the Army Air Force, and worked at Boeing and the University of Washington, where he learned bricklaying and construction.

He operated his own business in the Seattle area for years, then in 1969 moved his family to Sequim and worked another 19 years.

He leaves his wife, Dolly; two sons and a daughter, Mike in Monroe, Tim of Sequim and Marie of Seattle; brothers Wendell of Burke, South Dakota, Ron of Kenai, Alaska, Don of Levenworth, Wisconsin, and Larry of Lincoln City, Oregon; three grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held at Sequim Bible Church on July 6, 2004, with Pastor Dave Wiitala officiating. Interment at Sequim cemetery.

THELMA L. TAYLOR

April 26, 1910 - June 30, 2004

Thelma L. Taylor passed away at age 94 of cancer.

Thelma was born in Asotin to Frederick C. and Arabell (Hileman) Sittkus. She was raised on a farm in Eastern Washington and moved to Potlatch in 1923.

She married Elmore Thayer in 1926. He died in a hunting accident in 1930.

She met and married Raymond E. Taylor in Ritzville on May 29, 1938. They spent 57 years together until his death in October 1995.

The Taylors moved to the Bremerton-Silverdale area in the early 1940s. Mrs. Taylor worked at the Naval Torpedo Station in Keyport as an electric equipment assembler for 20 years before retiring in 1972.

They moved to Sequim in 1976, then to Port Angeles in 1989.

Survivors include son and daughter-in-law Roy E. and Marylan Thayer of Joyce; five grandchildren, Jeannine Hughes Lutge and husband Robert of Gig Harbor, John Thayer and wife Neatha of Boulder, Colo., Candes Parke and husband Robert of Port Angeles, Mary Brisson and husband Robert of Tacoma, and Mike Thayer Sebring and wife Camille of Tacoma; five grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her sister, Edna Lewis of Moscow, Idaho, and two grandchildren, Robert and Kathleen Hughes.

Services were held at Miller-Woodlawn cemetery, Bremerton, on July 6, 2004. The Rev. Mel Wilson of Joyce Bible Church officiated. Family member the Rev. Don Smith was asked by the grandchildren to read a special poem.

Memorials may go to Hospice of Clallam County, P.O. Box 2014, Port Angeles, WA 98362.

Clarence Byrd

Sept. 28, 1911 -- July 10, 2004

Port Angeles resident Clarence Byrd died at the age of 92.

He was born in Darington.

Services: Wednesday, July 14, 2 p.m., memorial at the First United Methodist Church, 110 East Seventh St. Port Angeles. Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Louis Albert Engel

March 18, 1921 -- July 9, 2004

Forks resident Louis Albert Engel died at Forks Community Hospital. He was 83.

He was born to Ernest and Margaret Jane (Mathews) Engel in Eugene, Ore.

Mr. Engel served with the Navy Seabees during World War II.

He married Mary Jane Huling in First Congregational Church of Forks on Oct. 18, 1947.

Mr. Engel worked as a logger, sawmill worker, trucker, carpenter, mechanic and heavy-equipment operator.

He enjoyed gardening, farming, woodworking, hunting, fishing, clamdigging and annual travels to Alaska to visit friends. He was also an avid reader.

Mr. Engel was a lifetime member of the Quillayute Valley Grange and was a Teamster until retirement in 1987 from Allen Logging Co.

Survivors include his wife of Forks; son and daughter-in-law Wynn M. and Frances Engel of Ethyl; son David R. Engel of Sedro-Wooley; daughters and sons-in-law Linda and Greg Colfax of Neah Bay, Mary and Terry Donovan of Port Angeles and Patricia and Criss Whidden of Forks; 19 grandchildren and 26 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by sons Kurt H. Engel and Barney E. Engel.

Services: Sunday, July 18, 2 p.m., celebration of life potluck at the Congregational Church Fellowship Hall, 280 S. Spartan Ave., Forks. Drennan-Ford Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials: Hope Heart Institute, 1710 E. Jefferson St., Seattle, WA 98122.

Irving L. Jensen

July 2, 1917 -- July 9, 2004

Irving L. ``Irv" Jensen of Port Angeles died at Port Angeles Care Center at age 87.

He was born in Chicago, to John and Emma (Christiansen) Jensen.

He married Geraldine Greenwich in Chicago on Sept. 7, 1940. Following their marriage they moved to DeKalb, Ill., to care for his parents.

During his career, he owned a candy store, managed a paint store, worked as a floral designer and was a custodian at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb.

In 1955 he was stricken with meningitis which left him hearing-impaired. Meniere's syndrome led to his early retirement. In 1980, the Jensens moved to California to be near their daughter.

In 1998, they moved to Port Angeles to be with their daughter and son-in-law, later moving to Laurel Park Assisted Living Facility in Port Angeles.

Mr. Jensen wrote poetry, did woodworking and gardening, and enjoyed fishing.

Survivors include his wife, and daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Ron Coles, all of Port Angeles.

He was preceded in death by four brothers and four sisters.

Services: Thursday, July 15, 10 a.m., memorial at Laurel Park Assisted Living, 1133 E. Park Ave., Port Angeles. The Rev. Mike Jones will officiate. Drennan-Ford Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.

Memorials: Salvation Army, P.O. Box 2229, Port Angeles, WA 98362.

Wendy K. McBride

April 10, 1939 -- July 10, 2004

Sequim resident Wendy K. McBride died in her home of a brain tumor. She was 65.

She was born in Port Angeles to Harold Raymond and Helen Pearl (Stark) Messersmith.

She married LeRoy J. McBride on April 29, 1955. They divorced in 1973.

She worked as a caregiver and child care provider, and lived in Port Angeles until 1976, when she moved to Sequim.

She enjoyed baseball, sewing, bingo and children. She volunteered time to Little League baseball for more than 30 years in the concession stand, earning her the nickname ``Hamburger Lady."

Mrs. McBride was a member of the Eastern Hills Community Church and the Sequim Veterans of Foreign Wars Ladies Auxiliary.

Survivors include son Donald McBride, and daughters Denise Currington and Donna McBride, all of Sequim; brothers Dave Messersmith of Colfax and Robin Messersmith of Port Angeles; sisters Becky Stark of Ethel and Paula Critchfield and Shelley Evenstad, both of Port Angeles; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by son Dale McBride, and brothers Dean Messersmith and Alfred Dugan Messersmith.

Services: Memorial on Wednesday, July 21, 3 p.m., at Lincoln Park, 1900 W. Lauridsen Blvd., Port Angeles. The Rev. Mark Weatherford will officiate.

Funeral on Thursday, July 15, 2 p.m., graveside at Ocean View cemetery, 3127 W. 18th St., Port Angeles.

Following the graveside service, there will be a reception at the home of Shelley Evenstad, 2121 E. Fifth St., Port Angeles.

Drennan-Ford Funeral Home, Port Angeles, is in charge of arrangements.

Irene `Chick' Osborne

Sept. 28, 1923 -- June 12, 2004

Port Townsend resident Irene ``Chick" Osborne died of respiratory failure at age 80.

Services: Thursday, July 15, 7 p.m., celebration of life at Quimper Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 2333 San Juan Ave., Port Townsend. There will be a potluck dessert, and those attending may bring a flower to plant at the fellowship in her memory. Kosec Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Carmella A. Prior

Aug. 27, 1927 -- July 8, 2004

Port Townsend resident Carmella A. Prior died at the age of 76.

She was born to John and Christine (Krevalavic) Armatis in Council Bluffs, Iowa.

She married Glenn E. Prior in Sioux City, Iowa, on July 28, 1947.

In 1950, the couple moved to Chimacum, followed by a move to Port Townsend in 1955.

Mrs. Prior worked as a PBX operator at Fort Worden, then for the telephone company.

She then was employed by Crown Zellerbach for 20 years until retirement in 1982.

A member of the Key City Players for many years, she also enjoyed reading, dancing, roller skating and traveling, especially to Hawaii.

Survivors include her husband; sons David and Dan Prior of Port Townsend; daughter and son-in-law DeeLynn and Gary Tuthill of Snohomish; brothers Paul Armatis of Puyallup and Clint Armatis of San Jacinto, Calif.; brother and sister-in-law Don and Elayne Armatis of Puyallup; sisters Eileen Lewis and Rosemary Conzemous, both of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and Jeannette Peterson of Omaha, Neb.; and two granddaughters.

Services: No services. Inurnment to be at Garner Township cemetery, Council Bluffs, Iowa, on July 17. Kosec Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
