LOUISE SPARHAWK VICKERY

Louise Sparhawk Vickery was born July 24, 1912, in Rushville, Illinois, the daughter of Wyoming pioneers Frank O. and Bessie Sparhawk.

She died in Enumclaw, Washington, on Feb. 19, 2004, at 91 years of age.

Her father, Frank O. Sparhawk, was the first forest ranger on the Shoshone National Forest, and her first years were spent at the Crandall Creek Ranger Station in the Sunlight Basin of Wyoming.

The Cody Enterprise issue of Dec. 18, 1912, announced her arrival as follows: ``Frank Sparhawk, the Crandall Creek Forest Ranger, made a trip to Sheridan last week to meet Mrs. Sparhawk and their baby daughter, who will spend the winter at the Ranger Station with their husband and father. Mr. Sparhawk had not seen the winsome baby, who arrived while Mrs. Sparhawk was in the East, and that Frank is the happiest ranger in these parts is evident."

One of her favorite stories was the time Buffalo Bill Cody acted as her baby-sitter. Her parents were in Cody to obtain supplies, and her father stopped in at the Irma Hotel and asked Buffalo Bill to watch her while he took care of some business.

Cody perched her on the bar and gave her several silver dollars to play with. The event left Louise with a wonderful story to tell!

Later, the family moved to a ranch at Chance, Wyoming, where she continued to develop her love of the mountains and land.

She attended elementary and middle school at Pioneer School at Clark. Her high school years were completed in Akron, Ohio.

When she was about nine years old, a young cowboy working for her father teased her by saying, ``Little girl, when you grow up I think I'll marry you."

That young man was Fred B. Vickery, who in 1942 did become her husband. They first made their home in Bridger and in 1948, moved to Billings, where she spent the next 50 years.

In 1997 she moved to Port Angeles, Washington, to be close to her daughters, then to Enumclaw in 2003 where she entered a nursing home.

Throughout her late retirement years, her heart remained in Montana. She loved the greater Yellowstone country, and for a number of years spent summers in Jackson, Wyoming.

Taking care of her home and family was always her first priority. Providing care and guidance to her children and grandchildren was her full-time life's work, which she did well.

She was an active member of the LDS church, and a lifetime member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. Through the years she was active with scouting programs and PTA as her children grew up. She loved travel to the mountains and being with extended family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Fred, in 1991, great-grandson Austin T. Vickery in 2001, and brother Richard in 1994.

She is survived by two sons, Lynden (Cheri) of Orem, Utah, and David (Linda) of Boise, Idaho; three daughters, Cari (Jim) Booth of Enumclaw, Washington, JoAnn Vickery of Port Angeles, Washington, and Barbara Kinsey of Billings, Montana; a brother, Howard Sparhawk of Billings, Montana; and sister Ruth Sparhawk of Los Angeles, California. Ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren were her special joy.

Cremation has taken place.
