He was born in Lacombe, Alberta, Canada, to Clarence Arthur and Nellie Gertrude (Coan) Dunker. Interestingly, his family lived across the road from the Fawcett family and his future wife, Carol, until he was 6 years old.

Art's family moved many times in his youth, both within Canada and the United States. They finally settled in the Port Angeles area in 1945.

After numerous jobs in Port Angeles, including selling Prudential Insurance for many years, Art became a building contractor.

He served consecutively as a building director for NPBA since the early 1980s and represented the Association at the State level on several committees, including the Legislative Policy Committee and the Washington Affordable Housing Council.

In 1995 Art was voted ``Remodeler of the Year" by his peers within the Building Industry Association of Washington, not only for his professional craftsmanship as a remodeler/builder, but also for his commitment to the building industry in Clallam County. Art achieved Life Director Status with the NPBA in 2001.

Art had many interests and talents. He studied the history of Egypt for years, and finally was able to achieve a lifelong dream and visit Egypt in 2001. Art shared his knowledge of Egypt with many in the Port Angeles area, including a Sequim classroom during their Egyptian studies.

MARION ANNA `GRANNY' RAEF

Marion Raef died Jan. 17, 2004, at her son David L. Izatt's home. She was born on Oct. 1, 1919, in Salinas, Calif.

A California native, she eventually lived in Bothell, Washington. She worked at the Navy Exchange from 1965 to 1975.

Marion moved to Port Angeles in November 1975, and purchased the Indian Valley Café and Motel on Highway 101. Along with the running of the café, she and her son also took care of her elderly father, Louis Vargas. David continued his care until his death in 1977.

The café was known for homecooking dishes like Granny Baskets, three-meat breakfasts, homemade soups and enchiladas.

She built the business by hard work and long hours. Even in the winter, a passer-by could stop and get warm food and a hot drink before the long drive to Forks.

She taught her employees how to cook and operate a business. The upshot was that most of her employees and customers became like family.

This café gave her a place in which to actualize her passion of doing the kind of things she loved, which was just being with people. Tourists, locals and loggers became frequent visitors to ``Granny's Café " through the ever-presence of her good home cooking, conversation and friendship.

During those good times, her son, David, took his mother to Amsterdam and Brussels for her 75th birthday. She also got to see David complete his Master's degree in Clinical Psychology.

Marion adopted the name ``Granny" rather reluctantly. She didn't mind children and younger adults calling her that, but when an older man tried to help her out of a car, he said, ``C'mon, Granny." She responded, ``I'm NOT your granny."

Marion was known to be a bit testy and argumentative, and liked the business run her way.

Marion hoped to retire next door in her house near the café and sit in her usual chair.

Marion sold the café and motel in May 2000 to Terry and Carol Roszatycki. Unfortunately, she suffered a stroke in November of 2000. By April of 2001, her health was not receiving the right treatment and she went to live with her son in Seattle.

David L. Izatt provided long-term care and comfort for almost three years, and was by her side on the day of her death.

Arrangements were made through The Peoples Memorial Association of Seattle and, according to her wishes, she will be cremated at Bleitz Funeral Home in Seattle.

Marion was 84. Her remains will be taken to Maui, Hawaii, to be set free in a private ceremony there.

Her brother, Richard Vargas, will be having a memorial service, to be announced at a later date as to place, date and time in Port Angeles for all of her friends.
