He was born to Gaylord and Mallie Dean (Tanner) Jones in Seattle. After his father's death when Mr. Jones was age 4, he was raised by his mother and an aunt.

After graduating from West Seattle High in 1936, Mr. Jones attended the University of Washington.

He formed a dance band and married his high school sweetheart and lead singer, Marilyn ``Mars" Mercer, on April 29, 1937.

The Gay Jones Orchestra traveled up and down the West Coast in a rickety Ford model-T bus and later became the house band at Trianon Ballroom in Seattle. In 1940, they played the first jazz concert in Seattle at the Metropolitan Theater.

When the arrival of World War II caused the band to break up, Mr. Jones went to Hollywood.

He composed music for such bandleaders as Spike Jones and Lionel Hampton, and played with big bands before being drafted into the Army in 1945.

During his tour of active duty, Mr. Jones was stationed as a supply clerk in Seattle and directed Army and Coast Guard bands.

After his discharge, Mr. Jones began fishing commercially.

For several summers, the Jones family lived in a tent on the beach at Midway, west of Neah Bay, fishing from a 16-foot ``kicker boat, " after which they ran the Clara T out of Neah Bay as a charter.

A sequence of charter boats followed, and his wife became the first woman on the West Coast to obtain a deep sea charter license.

The Joneses' charter business gained a celebrity clientele that included Bing Crosby, Phil Harris, Joshua Green and Eddie Bauer.

In 1962, the Jones family moved to Port Angeles to initiate winter blackmouth charters. When not running charters, Mr. Jones trolled commercially.

In 1988, he was licensed as a master of near coastal steam or motor vessels of not more than 100 gross tons.

In 1989, Satin Doll Charters was selected best saltwater charter service in Port Angles/Neah Bay, and Mr. Jones was rated best charter fishing boat captain on the Oregon and Washington coast. By 1992, the Joneses opted for retirement, sold the business.

Starting with a Panama Canal cruise that was a 50th wedding anniversary gift, the couple traveled to Alaska, the Mediterranean, South Pacific, Australia, New Zealand and the Canadian Maritimes.

Mr. Jones was organist and pianist at First Christian Church in Port Angeles; conductor, music arranger and pianist with several groups, including Evergreen Quintet, The Charlie May Jazz Quintet, Opus One and the Most Notables; as well as a performer for Concerts at the Pier, Port Angeles Symphony, Peninsula College Concerts and area jazz festivals.

In 1993, Mr. Jones was honored by the Seattle Museum of History and Industry with a certificate of recognition as a Seattle Jazz Pioneer.

His survivors include son Gaylord G. Jones of Chehalis; daughters Diana J. Hough and Cheryll J. Fritzer, both of Port Angeles; daughter Glee Anna Jones of Sequim; sister Glenora Choiunard of Evansville, Ind.; seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
