MARY JOY ALBERS

Mary Joy Albers of SunCity, Las Vegas, Nevada, passed away Dec. 22, 2003, after a valiant struggle against a staph infection following heart surgery.

She was born in Port Angeles, Washington, on April 13, 1932. She obtained her B.A. in education from Western Washington College in 1954 and later obtained her Master's from University of Washington and principal credentials.

Her love of learning never stopped. In the Port Angeles School District, she worked as a teacher, reading specialist, administrator and an elementary school principal. During her career, she was active in the Delta Kappa Gamma Society and Soroptomists.

She initially retired to Las Vegas in 1989. Children with extra needs propelled her back to working at elementary schools. She then retired from Clark County, Nevada, schools in 1999.

The League of Women Voters benefited from her enthusiasm and administrative talents, including two terms as state president.

Mary savored time spent with her grandchildren. She also enjoyed traveling.

Her survivors include two daughters, Kara Slehofer and her husband Mike Maguire of Kenmore, Washington, and Lori Slehofer-Sublette and her husband, Bill Sublette, of Las Vegas; their four children; one brother, Carleton Albers of Port Angeles; a nephew, nieces and many cousins.

A memorial service was held in Las Vegas on Jan. 2. A memorial celebration for Mary will be planned for this coming April in Port Angeles. Details will be forthcoming.

Donations can be made to the Port Angeles Education Foundation (PAEF), P.O. Box 787, Port Angeles, WA 98362.

Mary would enjoy knowing that she could continue to help children through teacher's proposals for mini grants.

Mary, we love you and will miss you -- now you're moving with God's pace!

TYLER JAMES LESTER

Tyler James Lester was born in Port Angeles at Olympic Medical Center to Travis (TJ) and Summer Lester.

Tyler was a beautiful baby boy who made everyone smile at first sight. He is loved by many people.

Tyler was born at 7:55 a.m. on December 30, 2003, to loving parents. On December 31, 2003, he passed away at Olympic Medical Center from heart failure.

He will be loved and remembered by many people.

Tyler will be remembered by his mother and father, and his big brother Edward (Eddy), all of Port Angeles; great-grandfather and great-grandmother Marion and Shirley Brown of Hastings, Nebraska; grandmother Sandra Brown of Hastings, Nebraska; grandmother Anna Lester of Port Angeles; grandfather and grandmother Ralph Lester and Joanne McSerrin of Forks; great-uncle and great-aunt Scott and Barbra Kattau of Port Angeles; uncle and aunt Brian Brown and Salina Hunt of Westminster, California; uncle and aunt William and Crystal Campbell of Port Angeles; uncle and aunt Mike and Darcy Lester of Olalla; aunt and uncle Mary and Mark Napiontek of Port Angeles; and many cousins and great-cousins, great-aunts and great-uncles and friends.

He was preceded in death by great-grandfather Bill Lester and great-grandmother Mary Jane Lay.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, January 10, 2004, at Hillcrest Baptist Church in Port Angeles. Burial will follow at Ocean View cemetery in Port Angeles.

William Frank Blum

April 11, 1923 -- Dec. 31, 2003

Port Ludlow resident William Frank Blum died of a heart attack in Kah Tai Care Center, Port Townsend, at age 80.

He was born in Seattle to Charles and Minnie (Shellan) Blum and grew up in Ballard, where he graduated from high school.

During World War II, Mr. Blum served in the Army from 1943 to 1946 as a staff sergeant in Asia and the South Pacific. He was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars.

He graduated from the University of Washington.

Before moving to Port Ludlow, he was a manufacturer's representative in Seattle, retiring from Blum and Associates in 1986.

He married his wife, Phyllis Jean, in Portland, Ore., on Sept. 10, 1948.

In addition to his wife of 55 years, he is survived by son and daughter-in-law John E. and Linda K. Blum of Port Ludlow; daughters and sons-in-law Linda and Scott Paulson of Quilcene and Judy and Jay Roberts of Sumner; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Services: Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2 p.m., burial at Tahoma National cemetery, 18600 SE 24th St., Kent. The Rev. Howard Fosser of Grace Lutheran Church, Port Townsend, will officiate. Kosec Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Martha June Cannon

March 10, 1928 -- Jan. 4, 2004

Port Angeles resident Martha June Cannon died at age 75.

She was born in Oklahoma City to Garland George and Riley (Irvin) Mann.

On April 26, 1947, she married Bobby Lee Cannon Sr. in Wagoner, Okla.

She was a bookkeeper for Phillips Petroleum in Oklahoma for about 20 years, then lived in San Diego, where she and her husband managed motels.

They moved to Port Angeles in 1990.

Mrs. Cannon was a member of Church of God.

Survivors include son and daughter-in-law Bobby L. and Susan Cannon of Port Angeles; sisters Mary Cannon of Wagoner, Okla., and Beth Young of Florida; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Her husband died Aug. 17, 1997, and daughter Brenda Sue Cannon died in 1948. She was also preceded in death by three sisters and two brothers.

Services: Wednesday, Jan. 7, 2 p.m., graveside dedication in Mount Angeles Memorial Park, U.S. Highway 101 and Monroe Road, Port Angeles. Drennan-Ford Funeral Home is in charge.

Joseph Alan Columbus died in his Sequim home at age 51.

Barbara Joan Cornelius died in her Port Angeles home at age 70.

Arthur C. Dunker

Oct. 17, 1930 -- Dec. 31, 2003

Longtime former Port Angeles resident Arthur C. Dunker, 73, was surrounded by family members when he died of cancer in Sandpoint, Idaho.

Services: Jan. 31, memorial in First Baptist Church, Sixth and Laurel streets, Port Angeles. Coffelt Funeral Service, Sandpoint, Idaho, is in charge.

Fred R. Hoefel

Sept. 16, 1921 -- Jan. 2, 2004

Fred R. Hoefel died in Sequim of pneumonia following a short illness. He was 82.

He was born in Lewiston, Idaho, to Fred W. and Alice (Shaw) Hoefel.

He married Mary Lee Bell on June 18, 1944, in Newport.

He earned bachelor's and master's degrees in education from Eastern Washington University.

He was as a junior high school teacher and principal in Spokane.

Mr. Hoefel was a member of the Rotary Club and Masonic Lodge.

In addition to his wife, Mr. Hoefel is survived by nephews Ronald P. Bell of Sequim, Donald L. Bell of Wenatchee and Kenneth R. Bell of Seattle; and niece Nancy K. Olson of Bainbridge Island.

Services: None. Sequim Valley Chapel is in charge.

Emily Ann Gallacci

Aug. 17, 1918 -- Jan. 2, 2004

Emily Ann (Hermann) Gallaci died in Port Angeles of coronary artery disease. She was 85.

Services: Today, Jan. 6, 1 p.m., memorial at St. Matthew Lutheran Church, 132 E. 13th St., Port Angeles. The Rev. Philip Ritter will officiate. Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Marie Ann Sayers

Oct. 24, 1924 -- Jan. 2, 2004

Marie Ann Sayers died of respiratory arrest in her Sequim home. She was 79.

Born in Madisonville, Ky., to Edward B. and Marie T. (Hautbergue) Bringhurst, she lived in Chicago, Washington, D.C., Montana and Oregon before moving to Sequim in 1971.

She married James Sayers in Chicago on March 15, 1947. He died Nov. 22, 2002.

Mrs. Sayers, who belonged to the Evangelical Free Church, enjoyed floral arranging and interior decorating, and was also a doll collector and seamstress.

She is survived by daughter Ramona Sayers of Seattle.

Services: Wednesday, Jan. 7, 11 a.m., funeral in Sequim Valley Chapel, 108 W. Alder St., Sequim. The Rev. John McArthur will officiate. Entombment will be in Mount Angeles Memorial Park, U.S. Highway 101 and Monroe Road, Port Angeles. Sequim Valley Funeral Chapel is in charge.

RUTH FOX

Aug. 28, 1911 -- Jan. 1, 2004

Ruth Fox, born in Wenatchee, Washington, was the fifth of seven children of Lemuel and Eva Johnson.

After graduating from Wenatchee High School in 1929, she attended Washington State University, where she earned a degree in chemistry and was inducted into Phi Beta Kappa.

Ruth continued her education at Iowa State University, where she earned a master's degree in chemistry and did extensive doctoral work.

From 1936 to 1938, she taught chemistry at the Webster City College in Webster City, Iowa.

In 1938, Ruth married Clarence Fox of New Sharon, Iowa, and the couple settled back in the Wenatchee Valley, where they resided until 1975.

During these years, Ruth and Clarence (``Foxy") raised three sons, and Ruth was a well-respected teacher of chemistry at Wenatchee Valley College for 27 years. The science building at the college is named for Ruth and her colleague of many years, Dr. Jay Eller.

Retirement brought the Foxes to Port Angeles in 1975, where they built a lakeside home of their dreams on 40 wooded acres in the Joyce, Washington, area. Ruth and Foxy were married 63 years before he died in 2002.

Ruth was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ.

She is survived by her sister, Faye English of Portland, Oregon; and three sons and their wives, Larry and Valerie Fox of Port Angeles, Vernon and Polly Fox of Snohomish, Washington, and Harold and Leanna Fox of Seattle, Washington.

Ruth leaves seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, a large and close extended family and many dear friends.

Funeral services were held on Saturday, January 3, 2004, at the family home. Burial was in Mount Angeles Memorial Park. Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel was in charge of arrangements.

George C. Brown

Aug. 27, 1922 -- Jan. 2, 2004

George C. Brown of Port Townsend died of respiratory failure at age 81 at Discovery Bay.

Mr. Brown was born to Stillman Vernon and Lucille Mildred (Wooliver) Brown at Discovery Bay. He married Leona Lorraine Robbins on Dec. 18, 1948, in Quilcene.

Mr. Brown was a logger, real estate broker, county commissioner, and member of the school board.

He enjoyed hunting and fishing.

Mr. Brown was a member of the Masonic Lodge, gun clubs of Sequim, and the Discovery Bay Fire Department.

Survivors include his wife of Discovery Bay; daughters Linda Dignum of Sedro Woolley and Connie Matthes of Port Townsend and daughter and son-in-law Cheryl and Kent Tate of Hilo, Hawaii; sisters Mildred Northup of Discovery Bay and Dianna Smith of Sequim and sister and brother-in-law Dorthy Albert Hopkins of Bremerton; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by brothers Stillman ``Pete" Brown and John A. Brown.

Services: Wednesday, Jan. 7, 1 p.m. memorial service at the Masonic Hall, 170 Herbert St., Quilcene. A reception will follow the service. There will be a private graveside service at Discovery Bay cemetery. Kosec Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Steven Jon Franklin

July 28, 1961 -- Dec. 28, 2003

Steven Jon Franklin died in Forks. He was 42.

Mr. Franklin was born in Port Angeles to Herbert Carl and Sirritha Blanche (McHaffey) Franklin.

He married Tina S. McMillian on July 31, 1965, in Aberdeen.

Mr. Franklin attended schools in Clallam Bay and Forks and was a certified diesel mechanic.

A member of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and the National Rifle Association, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and outdoor cooking.

Survivors include his wife; sons Kevin Jon Franklin and Jeremy Wheeler; brothers Russell Herod, Herb Franklin, and David Franklin; sisters Nancy Niemezak, Cheryl Simonson, Carol Munro, Diane Burrow, and Janet Baker; and one granddaughter. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Kenneth Franklin.

Services: Saturday, Jan. 10, 4:30 p.m. memorial service at Forks First Baptist Church, Highway 101, with Andy Simonson officiating. A reception and meal will follow the service. Mount Olympus Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials: Wildlife conservation group of choice.
