Delmar L. `Del' Thompson

Dec. 28, 1931 -- Nov. 18, 2003

Delmar L. ``Del" Thompson died in his Port Angeles home at age 71. He had cancer.

He was born to Matthew William and Irene (Best) Thompson in Port Angeles.

He graduated from high school in Port Angeles and attended classes at Peninsula College.

Mr. Thompson owned a share in Peninsula Plywood, and owned Big Scoop Restaurant for 15 years.

He was one of the first Hospice volunteers, as well as a volunteer with juvenile diversion, the Sheriff's Reserve and, after retirement, serving as a Wal-Mart volunteer for a year.

Mr. Thompson, who was a charter member of both the Uptown Business Association and nighttime Lions Club, served as secretary of the Port Angeles Eagles Club for nine years, and was a longtime member of the Olympic Zone of Washington State Horsemen, of which he was past president.

On Feb. 20, 1960, he married Margaret Jean Laughlin, who survives him.

His brother, Don B. Thompson of Port Angeles, also survives him.

He was preceded in death by brother Ray C. Thompson and sister Donabel Shipley.

Services: Friday, Nov. 21, at 3 p.m., memorial in the Eagles Club, 110 S. Penn St., Port Angeles. Mr. Thompson donated his body to the University of Washington Medical School.

Drennan-Ford Funeral Home, Port Angeles, is in charge of arrangements.

MARY CECELIA `CEC' ANDIS

Mary Cecelia ``Cec" Andis passed away in Port Angeles, Washington, on November 16, 2003, after a long illness.

She was born in Newport, Rhode Island, on November 29, 1942, to Richard William Gareis and Edith Mary Moran.

Cec married John Lyle Andis in Port Angeles on December 3, 1960. She attended Rae-Jean School of Beauty and was a beautician at Laurel House of Beauty.

Cec loved her family and friends. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, birds and her dog, Rosebud. Among her favorite things to do was bowling, beachcombing and traveling. She was a member of Dream Machines Car Club and WIBC.

The family would like to give special thanks to the family and friends who supported her through her illness and to the staff at short stay (OMC) who gave her special care and friendship.

Cec is survived by her husband, John Lyle Andis of Port Angeles; son John Michael Andis of Buffalo, Wyoming; daughters Rita Clouse of Nashville, Tennessee, and Jennifer Hanson of Port Angeles; brothers Richard Gareis of Port Orchard, Washington, and Michael and Michael Gareis of Saltese, Montana, sisters Rose Marie Thayer and Debbie VanWinkle, both of Port Angeles; and three grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Tammi Rose Andis, and her parents.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, November 22, 2003, at Harper-Ridgeview Funeral Chapel, 105 W. Fourth, Port Angeles, Washington.

An open house will be held following the memorial at 3435 Mount Angeles Road, Port Angeles, Washington.

Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Clallam County, P.O. Box 2014, Port Angeles, WA 98362.

MARTHA KENT DENNISTON

On November 4, 2003, Martha Kent Denniston passed on in Seattle.

Martha grew up in suburban Philadelphia. She graduated from Bryn Mawr College in 1941, and was elected to Sigma Xi, the scientific honor society.

For 10 years after World War II, she lived a farm life in Chester County, Pennsylvania, and then moved to Washington State. There, she assisted Professor Thomas Edmondson in his work to clean up Lake Washington.

She also received an MA in Philosophy from the University of Washington.

Concerned about overpopulation since her college days, she pioneered the opening of Family Planning Clinics in the Seattle-King County Health Department. Subsequently, Martha ran a non-profit birth control clinic, Population Dynamics, in Seattle.

She was a Founding Member of the Jefferson County Conservancy, and was instrumental in stopping the Northern Tier oil pipeline. She is a published author. She owned and operated a small resort on Puget Sound (The Ecologic Place, now Beach Cottages on Marrowstone).

She is survived by her husband, George C Denniston M.D.; her first husband, E. Shippen Willing Jr.; and four sons, Peter, Matthew, Thomas and Stephen.

A celebration of her life will be held at Beach Cottages on Marrowstone on Saturday, November 22, at 2:30-5:30 p.m.

IRENE MONSON MACDONALD

Irene Macdonald, 100, a resident of the Hoquiam area for 54 years, died Sunday, May 11, 2003, of heart failure in Renton, Washington.

Irene was born on June 24, 1902, in Blue Earth, Minnesota, to Sivert Monson and Hannah Enger Monson. Her family moved to Hoquiam in 1910. She was the last survivor of her immediate family of four brothers and one sister.

Irene graduated from Hoquiam High School in 1920. She attended Western Washington College in Bellingham and received her teaching certificate after one year.

She began her teaching career at Railroad Camp (a logging camp north of Hoquiam) in a one-room schoolhouse, grades 1-6.

Irene returned to college every summer to earn her BA degree.

Many of her 40 teaching years were spent in the Sequim and Dungeness, Washington, area. In 1992, she was invited to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Dungeness School, a National Historical Site, where she taught for many years.

Irene spent the last five years of her career as librarian of Hoquiam High School.

Irene was an active member of Delta Kappa Gamma, a teachers' honorary society, Kappa Delta Pi, a scholastic honorary, and was associated with BPW, AAUW, the ``Y" auxiliary, NEA and WEA.

Irene was interested in all arts and crafts. The list included rug hooking, candle making, ceramics, decorating blown-out eggshells, making scrubbies, and shell collecting. During the bicentennial years, she gave many demonstrations and lessons in the Colonial Art of ``Quilling" -- creating artwork with tiny strips of rolled paper.

Irene is survived by her nieces, Carole Hoffman Eide of Renton, and Margaret Monson Gavaler of Pittsburgh; nephew Richard Monson of Seattle; and many great- and great-great-nieces and nephews.

Irene is always remembered as the ``Cookie Lady." She baked goodies for her family until she was 98 years of age, when she moved to the Lodge at Eagle Ridge in Renton (no oven there).

Irene celebrated her 100th birthday at a ``Hawaiian Luau" given by her family. Attending were friends, relatives, former students from the Sequim area, bridge partners from Hoquiam, and Delta Kappa Gamma associates from Aberdeen. It was a wonderful party for a wonderful lady.

We all miss her. Memorials may be made to Hoquiam YMCA and Children's Orthopedic Hospital, maintaining her interest in children and young people of the community.

JOSEPHINE ROSSI BURDETTE

IN LOVING MEMORY

Josephine was born January 16, 1927, in Estacada, Ore. She passed away from cancer November 13, 2003, in Port Angeles, Wash., at the age of 76.

Her husband, Charles Burdette, and sons, Jimmy Wright and Calvin Summers, preceded her in death.

Josephine enjoyed camping, going to rodeos, dancing and being outdoors.

Survivors include brothers Nick Rossi of Chiloquin, Ore., and Albert Rossi of Medford, Ore.; daughters Madelon and her husband Harley Cole, Pamela and Ed Pelletier and Sonja and Richard Barkley, all of Klamath Falls, Ore., Toni Burdette of LaPush, Wash., Penny Burdette and Gerald Sanderson of Weaverville, Calif., Aurora Burdette and Stephen Conway of Schurz, Nev., and Angel Burdette and Frank Bennette of Port Angeles, Wash.; son Scott and his wife Robin Burdette of Winnemucca, Nev.

Numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends also survive Josephine.

A private family graveside service will be at Hill cemetery in Chiloquin, Ore.

Vivian A. Bittner

Aug. 23, 1913 -- Nov. 15, 2003

Vivian A. Bittner died in Kah Tai Care Center, Port Townsend, at age 90.

She was born in Aspen, Colo., to Patrick W. and Nellie (Alexander) Sullivan.

Her 1933 marriage to Lloyd Hubbard in Port Townsend ended with his death in 1937.

She married Ernie Bittner in Port Townsend on March 23, 1940. He died Nov. 12, 1969.

She enjoyed visiting with her grandchildren, listening to old-time music and playing the piano. She was a member of the North Beach Club.

Mrs. Bittner's survivors include son and daughter-in-law Sid and Rita Hubbard of Port Townsend; daughter Pat Nebel of Gardiner; daughter and son-in-law Connie and Rich Nordberg of Port Townsend; 10 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren.

Services: At her request, none. Burial will be in Laurel Grove cemetery. Kosec Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Jon J. Melnyk

Jan. 1, 1922 -- Nov. 15, 2003

Sequim resident Jon J. Melnyk died in Port Angeles of complications following a fall in October. He was 81.

He was born in Detroit to Jacob and Anna (Holyk) Melnyk.

During World War II, he served in the Army in 1942-45.

He enjoyed history and traveling, visiting 103 countries. He also liked children, animals and listening to music.

Mr. Melnyk belonged to Disabled American Veterans and American Legion, as well as being a life member of Elks Naval Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, the former Hendrika W. ``Ricci" Molenkamp; and sister and brother-in-law Sonia and Lennie Renusch of St. Clair Shores, Mich.

Services: At his request, none. Drennan-Ford Funeral Home, Port Angeles.

Patrick Raymond `Patter' Lee

March 17, 1958 -- Nov. 14, 2003

LaPush resident Patrick Raymond ``Patter" Lee died in Forks Community Hospital at age 45. Cause of death is pending.

He was born in Forks to Philip and Virginia (Payne) Ward.

Raised in LaPush, he later attended Chemawa High School in Salem, Ore.

After returning to LaPush, he worked as a fisherman, clam digger and seafood gatherer.

He married Brenda Lee on Oct. 31, 2003, and assumed her surname.

Survivors include his wife of Forks; daughter Patricia; stepparents Walter and Pam Jackson of LaPush; brothers Tom Jackson of Sedro-Woolley, Philip Ward Jr., Joseph Ward Sr. and Vern Ward Sr., all of LaPush, Arvie Ward of Fife and Eli Ward of Muckleshoot; and sisters Anna Sablan and Jennifer Black, both of LaPush, Yvonne Aponte of Tacoma, Liz Ward of Purdy and Colleen Anderson of Fife.

He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters Phyllis Swan Ward, Julie Ward, Judy Ward, Francine Tickel and Ruth Michelle Ward.

Services: Monday, Nov. 17, 7 p.m. candlelight service at the LaPush Shaker Church. Tuesday, Nov. 18, 10 a.m., Indian Shaker services at A-Ka-Lat Center in LaPush. Burial will

SYLVIA ANN SWEETLAND

Port Angeles resident Sylvia Sweetland passed away September 24, 2003.

Sylvia was born October 29, 1947, in Livingston, Texas, to George R. Sweetland and Odessa A. (Donnohue) Sweetland. Sylvia lived in Okarche, Oklahoma, before moving to Port Angeles in 2001.

She is preceded in death by both of her parents. Survivors include her sisters: Annette Guinn and husband Ralph of Port Angeles, Darlene Wilson of Edinboro, Pennsylvania, and Dr. Rose Long of Williston, North Dakota.

She is also survived by her brother, Dr. Richard Sweetland of Kansas City, Missouri, five nieces, five nephews, four great nieces and two great nephews.

The family would like to pay a special note of thanks to all of those very special people and agencies in Port Angeles who have helped to support Sylvia.

Sylvia led a full life. She seldom worried about the things most of us do. She loved to sing, dance, bowl, participate in Special Olympics and strawberry ice cream.

Sylvia seemed to always have a smile, a boyfriend, be ready to eat and an enormous love for life.

Graveside services were held September 29, 2003, at the Fairview cemetery in Shawnee, Oklahoma.

A Memorial Service has been arranged by Diversified Resource Center of Port Angeles. The service will be held at the Independent Bible Church on November 19 at 1 p.m.

Leonard Charles Hanley

Dec. 14, 1925 -- Nov. 12, 2003

Port Angeles resident Leonard Charles Hanley died at age 77.

He was born in Plymouth, England, to Alfred Charles Joseph and Lillian F. (Solway) Hanley and came to the United States at age 4.

When the family moved to Pysht, he attended Beaver School. The family later moved to Port Angeles.

Mr. Hanley served with the Army during World War II, from Jan. 18, 1944, to April 4, 1946. He was with the National Guard in 1958-61, rising to master sergeant.

He was employed with ITT Rayonier for more than 40 years before retiring.

Hiking and motorcycling were among his favorite pastimes.

Mr. Hanley was a member of American Legion and Elks Naval Lodge.

He married Yolanda ``Lanny" Sams in Port Angeles in 1948.

Survivors include his wife, daughters Denise Schneider and Lori Hanley of Port Angeles; son Leonard D. Hanley of Hillsboro, Ore.; three granddaughters and two great-grandchildren.

Services: At his request, none. Drennan-Ford Funeral Home, Port Angeles, is in charge.
