Hewson, Lucille S. Wed, 01 May 2002
Bainbridge resident Lucille S. Hewson, age 92, died May 1 at Messenger House.
She was born April 23, 1910 in Seattle to Ellsworth and Maude Stone, and graduated from Lincoln High School.
In 1935, she received a private pilot’s license, at a time when few women were licensed to fly. She married Wilbur M. Hewson on Sept. 29, 1940.
She was very involved with the Seattle Milk Fund, Trinity Parish and the Seattle Symphony, and sang with the Seattle Philharmonic.
After moving to Bainbridge in 1952, she was a Cub Scout Den Mother, sang in many light operas, and was a member of Wing Point Golf Club. She was an active member of St. Barnabas Episcopal Church, where she served in the Altar Guild, sang in the choir and played the organ. One of the first women on the church’s vestry, she was also the first woman senior warden and the first woman to administer the chalice for communion.
She was preceded in death by her husband Wilbur in 1989. She is survived by son Teri D. Hewson; daughter Dawn H. (Michael) Harris; five grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Alberta Stone; and three nieces.
A memorial service will be held 9 a.m. May 18 at St. Barnabas. Memorials may be made to the St. Barnabas Memorial Fund, P. O. Box 10207. Arrangements were under the direction of Kass Funeral Home.

Fenton, Nancy Griffiths Tue, 30 Apr 2002
Bainbridge resident Nancy Griffiths Fenton, age 76, died at home on April 30.
Born Aug. 2, 1925, she graduated from St. Nicholas School and attended the University of Washington. She was a member of Gamma Phi Beta, where she met many lifelong friends.
She met Ad Fenton, the love of her life, on June 8, 1943. They began dating at her senior prom and were married April 27, 1946.
She enjoyed playing bridge with her friends, gardening and travel.
She is survived by her sister, Anne Gates; her four daughters, Christie Ridgeway, Dana Berg, Barb Schaumberg, and Jan Fenton; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held 3:30 p.m. May 11 at her home on Fletcher Bay.
Remembrances may be made to Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center or Hospice of Kitsap County, PO Box 3416 Silverdale, WA 98383.
Arrangements are under the direction of Kass Funeral Home, Bainbridge Island.

Rooms, Helen Tue, 30 Apr 2002
Helen Rooms, 91, a former resident of Port Orchard, died April 30, 2002 in Gig Harbor. She was born March 22, 1911 in Seattle to Joseph and Mary Ann (Butt) Triviere.
She was preceded in death by her husband Albert G. Rooms in 1977.
She graduated from Garfield High School in 1927 and business college in 1929. She was a secretary for Kitsap County Engineer for 25 years, retiring in 1976.
Helen enjoyed golf and was a lifetime member of Easter Star, Children’s Orthopedic Hospital Guild.
She is survived by her daughters Kathleen Payseno of Port Orchard and JoAnn Bundgard of San Jose, Calif.; and eight grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Services will be held 1 p.m Saturday May 4, 2002 at Rill Chapel. Inurnment will be at Sunset Lane cemetery in Port Orchard.
Arrangements were made by Pendleton-Gilchrist Funeral Home at Rill Chapel.
Please make memorial donations to the charity of the donor’s preference.

Ross, John A. Tue, 30 Apr 2002
John A. Ross died April 30th at Foothills hospital in Calgary. He was born October 18th 1917 in Yorkshire, England. John worked as an ironstone miner, a furnaceman, and after moving to Smithers in 1972 held various positions at PIR. He served in England with the Green Howards, and the Home Guard. John was a hiker, a caver, and loved gardening. In his sixties he took up snowmobiling with the Smithers Snowmobile Club and spent many happy days on the Dome. He is survived by his wife Lena, daughters Pat (Ian), Marjorie (Roman), son Alex, six grandchildren and six great grandchildren. A private memorial will be held May 12th in Kimberley BC where John was living. In lieu of flowers friends may make a donation to a charity of their choice.

Anderson, Ruth Arlene Mon, 29 Apr 2002
Ruth Arlene Anderson, age 86, died April 29 at Harbor House in Poulsbo.
She was born Jan. 1, 1916 in Leonard, N.D. to Delbert and Mae Walters.
She and her husband Elwood lived in Enderlin, N.D., where he worked for the railroad.
She was the church organist for 27 years, a member of the “Lady Trainmen” drill team and the local Avon Lady for 29 years. She earned a bachelor’s degree in 1973, and nurtured a love of learning throughout her life.
The couple moved to Seattle in 1975, where they managed the Galleon Apartments on Queen Anne Hill.
She retired at age 84 from apartment managing when they moved to Port Orchard.
She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Elwood Anderson of Port Orchard; two daughters, Marvel Loria Sandger and her husband, Bjorn of Bainbridge Island, and Jean Storelee and her husband Dennis, Port Orchard; seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Memorial services were held at First Lutheran Church in Port Orchard.
Remembrances may be made to First Lutheran Church building fund, 2483 Mitchell Road, Port Orchard, WA 98366-4496. Cards may be sent to P.O. Box 11175 Bainbridge Island, WA 98110.
Arrangements were under the direction of Kass Funeral Home, Bainbridge Island.

Laird, Evelyn Sabol Mon, 29 Apr 2002
Bainbridge resident Evelyn Sabol Laird, age 81, died April 29 in Seattle.
She was born May 8, 1920 in Lawrence, Kan. On Dec. 24, 1969, she married Charles Laird in San Francisco, Calif.
A needle artist, she was a member of Port Madison Lutheran Church.
She is survived by her husband, Charles Laird of Bainbridge Island; daughter Sherri Holmes of Squaw Valley, Calif.; sons Richard Ott and Stephen Ott of San Francisco; step-daughter Anne Laird of Bainbridge; stepsons Tom Laird of Fairborn, Ohio, Charles Laird of Seattle and Michael Laird of San Francisco; 16 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
Remembrances may be made to the Audubon Society, Bloedel Reserve or the Bainbridge Island Senior Community Center.

Cook, Linda Joyce Sat, 27 Apr 2002
Funeral services in remembrance of Linda Joyce Cook will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, May 3, at Family Bible Church with Pastor Jim Mikos officiating. Graveside services will follow at Maple Leaf cemetery. Visitation will be held on Thursday, May 2, from 2 until 7 p.m. at Burley Funeral Chapel. Arrangements are by Burley Funeral Chapel.
Linda Joyce Cook peacefully went home to be with the Lord on April 27, 2002. She was born Aug. 24, 1955, to Leo and Marion Lamberson in Riverside, Calif. Linda married John Cook Aug. 25, 1973. They lived in Oak Harbor from 1979 until 1983, returning in 1988.
Linda had many interests in arts and crafts and was a stained glass artist. She was a loving mother to her children and granddaughter. Linda was a home school mom for 16 years and a board member of Island County Horse Leaders 4-H Club. She was a member and Sunday school teacher at Family Bible Church.
Linda is survived by her husband, John; her four children, Jeremy Cook and his wife Randi of Everett, Christopher Cook, who is stationed in England while serving in the U.S. Air Force, and Ashley and Zachary Cook, both of Oak Harbor; her father and step-mother, Leo and Gloria Lamberson of Mesa, Ariz.; her mother and step-father, Marion and Clayton Stone of Joplin, Mo.; brother, Dennis Lamberson of Brainerd, Minn.; step-brothers, Billy Lamberson of Newman, Calif. and Barney Lamberson of Modesto, Calif.; mother-in-law, Lila Mae Cook-Gahagan of Corona, Calif.; and granddaughter, Kayla Marie Cook of Everett.
Remembrances may be made to the Coupeville Cossacks or to the College Memorial Fund for Linda’s children, Ashley and Zach, c/o Alaska USA Credit Union.

MURRAY, Irene
February 1919 ~ April 2002
Irene passed away peacefully at the Royal Jubilee Hospital in Victoria, B.C. on April 27, 2002 with her family by her side. Predeceased by her husband, Jack in 1986. Irene is survived by her daughter Elaine and son Martin, daughter in law JoAnne, grandson John and her granddaughter Allison.
A Celebration of Irene’s life will be held in the common room, Hidden Harbour, 27 S. Island Highway, Campbell River on May 1st at 2:00p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be forwarded to the Hidden Harbour Strata Council, 27 S. Island Highway, Campbell River for the purchase of a memorial bench.

Marshall, Lawson 'Larry' Stephen Fri, 26 Apr 2002
Lawson “Larry” Stephen Marshall, age 53, died of a sudden heart attack at his home in Edmonds on Friday, April 26, 2002.
Lawson was born Feb. 15, 1949, in Rupert, Idaho, to Lafe and Alma Leona Marshall. He lived with his family in southern Idaho and north central Utah before moving to Montana in 1964. Lawson attended Missoula Sentinel High School, graduating in 1967. He married Janet Denesen in 1969. They had one daughter, Stefanie Lynne. Lawson served his country in the U.S. Army (1970-1973) in Italy and Germany. He returned to the states to work as a truck driver, dispatcher and fleet manager.
On June 17, 1984, Lawson married his life’s touchstone, Gayle Janet Everly. They lived as a family with Stefanie in Missoula and moved to Oak Harbor in 1988. In 1991 they settled in Edmonds. He loved the Northwest and walking his dogs on the beach.
His most recent joy was playing with his grandson, Marshall.
Another love of Lawson’s was writing. He freelanced for national transportation magazines and spent one year in Boston writing for a transportation PR firm. In 1994, Lawson began his career with Maple Communications writing for “Fleet Equipment Magazine.” Lawson’s passion for writing, the trucking industry and new technologies inspired a new magazine, “Transport Technology Today.” Lawson was a national expert of transportation technology.
Lawson was preceded in death by his mother, Alma in 1965, and his first wife, Janet in 1970.
Survivors include his wife Gayle Everly of Edmonds; daughter Stefanie Marshall and her husband Luke Softich, grandson Marshall Wilson Softich; his father Lafe Marshall and wife Shirley, all of Missoula, Mont.; his brother Roger Marshall and wife Glenna of Seeley Lake, Mont. Additional survivors include stepbrothers Mark and Steve Jones, stepsister Tami Kallis, nephews and nieces Jason, Tyler, Renata and Angie Marshall and his extended family — the Everlys.
Celebrations of Lawson’s life are scheduled for 6 p.m., Thursday May 2 at Marina Beach Park in Edmonds and 5 p.m., Saturday, May 4 at the First Baptist Church, 308 West Pine, Missoula, Mont. The family suggests memorials to the American Heart Association, the Edmonds Public Library or PAWS Animal Shelter in Lynnwood.
Lawson will be remembered for his quite strength and resolve. He had a warm and generous heart, strong intelligence and great compassion. His wonderful sense of humor could move your mood and uplift your spirit. Friends and family loved him and he will live on in our hearts. Be at peace Lawson.

Nedwed, Mae Fri, 26 Apr 2002
Mae V. Nedwed, formerly of Poulsbo, died at the Clairmont East facility in Bremerton on April 26. She and her husband John had been residents of Poulsbo since 1970. She was 92.
She was born May 24, 1909 in San Antonio, Texas.
In 1929, she married John L. Nedwed, (Col., USAF Ret.), who was then a pilot in the U.S. Army Air Corps. Their daughter, Nancy Sefton of Poulsbo, was born just before the couple was transferred to Argentina, where Col. Nedwed served as a flying instructor.
After living for several years on Bainbridge Island, the Nedweds settled in Poulsbo in 1971 after a long search for the “ideal” retirement location. Col. Nedwed built his second boat in this area and the couple enjoyed summer cruises north to B.C. and Alaska. They were active members of the Poulsbo Yacht Club during the 70s and also members of Friends of the Library.
She is survived by her daughter Nancy (Ron) Sefton, Poulsbo and a niece, Joyce Vadas of Dallas, Texas. Her husband John preceded her in death in 1993.
At her request, no services will be held.
Memorial donations may be made to Hospice of Kitsap County. Arrange-ments are by Stone Chapel in Poulsbo.

Mathews, Mary Alice Tue, 14 May 2002
Mary Alice Mathews, age 79, longtime resident of Coupeville, died Tuesday, May 14, 2002. She goes to join her husband of nearly 60 years, Dale H. Mathews, who passed away Jan. 20, 2000.
Mary was born in Onyx, Idaho, on Oct. 2, 1922, to John and Irene Andrews. She lived her childhood and young life in Inkom, Idaho. Mary loved school and did well in all her subjects. She loved to read and always had a book in her hand. She played clarinet in the school band and played on the girls’ basketball team.
Mary married Dale Mathews on Oct. 22, 1940, and they had two children, a son Dale Eugene Mathews of Coupeville and Marilyn Alice Heller of Coupeville.
Mary was the oldest of four living children. She is survived by a sister, Josie Curzon of Portland, Ore., another sister, Ruth Avers of Renton and a brother Vernon Andrews of Weiser, Idaho.
When health permitted, Mary lived an active life working as a bookkeeper for many years, several years at the Navy Exchange in Oak Harbor. She loved to fish, crochet, knit and do all kinds of canning and crafts. Mary and her husband Dale could be seen taking many walks together.
Mary is also survived by seven grandchildren, Michael Mathews of Black Lake, Ginger Campbell of DesMoines, Shanna Hyatt of Puyallup, Derrick Heller of Derry, N.M., Aaron Heller of Everett, Kelly Lavigueure and Brian Heller, both of Granite Falls; also by 15 great-grandchildren, Nola, Cara, Kayla, Megan, Xoche, Jarron, Nathan, Sarah, Trentin, Michael, Dominic, Brock, Sandrea, Cody and Sabrina. In addition to her husband, Mary has also been preceded in death by one great-grandchild, Olivia.
A graveside service will be held Saturday, May 18, at 3:30 p.m. at Sunnyside cemetery. Arrangements under direction of Burley Funeral Chapel.
